  • My filter uses a mechanical filter, a bakki tower and bio median. It does a great job of keeping the water clear and the fish healthy.
I’ve loved goldfish ponds all my life. At the turn of the century, I bought a pond “kit” at Sam’s Club. I’d been attempting to build small goldfish ponds before that with limited success. I’ve also been planning on upgrading the kit pond for the last few years and never got around to it. Well the kit pond forced my hand because it had developed a leak. It was a lot of work but I love the results.
If you’re interested in making one yourself, I think you should go for it!

I'm going to put a water feature in the garden of my new place and I need to make a filter that won't keep clogging up, but my biggest problem has been debris clogging the pump before it even gets to the filter. I've been getting some very good ideas from RUclips and I'm going to add this one to the list.

Thanks. I'll get a few more as I can afford them. Walmart stopped selling fish in my area. No mom and pop pet stores left either, just the chain stores.

I'm confused, If the filter works on the force of gravity, and you put the discharge pipe about a foot off the bottom, the filter media below that level isn't going to do anything, it's just standing water with no water flowing through it.

So…….My pump is in a “case” made with two water plant baskets. The water goes up to the top of the filter. It flows over a washable furnace filter. I’ve been washing it out about once a month. It then flows through 2 milk crates full of lava rocks (bakki tower). In the bottom, the top 2 crates sit on a third crate that is full of bio material. Around that crate I’ve stuffed more boi material. I have bio balls, scrunchies, plastic scrubbing pads and those ibm scouring pads. So in the bottom foot of water is where the bio eating bacteria live. Hope this helps.

@@LSatch Ok, I see, the standing water at the bottom is where the cleaner bugs live, and they spread throughout the whole filter from there.
