Hi PTran, Great set up. getting ready to set mine up, are you running two pumps in your pond? I am running Aquascape Biofalls with Aquascape 400 skimmer & Aquasurge 3000 pump for 2200 gallon pond. What are you thoughts on running this set up with the existing all on one pump. One main thing I like about the Aquascape set up is all the piping is hidden but need to upgrade my filter system and hate having to wash mats every other day. Any help or thoughts would be much appreciated as I am still learning. Thanks.
Hi Max, I am running two pumps for my pond (6000 gallons). 4500 GPH for my skimmer and 3170 GPH for this 3-barrel system. I like to have these two separate systems just in case one fails, the other still runs. You can incorporate this set up to your skimmer system with your existing pump but I would not recommend it. You can use your current skimmer system with lighter filter media such as green matala to filter large surface debris and get a new pump put it at the bottom of the pond for this setup. That’s my thoughts.
Whats is the measurement from the inlet hole to the drain hole in second barrel? I dont know if the measurement matters. Or if I got to low if it will stir up settlement gunk. Thanks
Barrels are set up at slightly different heights to allow a better flow of water from higher barrel to lower barrel. You can try to set them at the same level if you like.
Hi I built the same filter system with 3 barrels but only running a 2000 hph submersible pump and currently the first and second barrel are overflowing. I'm not sure why as they're staggered in height for increased gravity flow too. Any tips or ideas?
There are 3 possibilities that may cause the overflow: 1. Barrel size: mine all are 30Ga. If yours are smaller than that could be the problem. 2. Pipe size between barrels - is it at least 2” diameter? 3. Is it just the air pocket that trapped in pipes between barrels? Here’s how to release the air pockets: if your barrel 1 overflows, try to clear the media away from the inlet pipe in barrel 2 to release any air pocket. Do the same for barrel 2 and 3. Let me know if any of those fixes the problem. 👍✌️
@@PTranProductions I’m using 3 55 gallon barrels with a 1 1/2 inch intake and all 2 inch PVC pipes in between each barrel. I haven’t added media yet so I don’t think that’s the issue either
I’m using a shower drain currently with multiple holes drilled into the sides. Do you think that’s not enough flow and maybe the PVC with slits is a better idea?
@@gordontrinh731 Yes, shower drain is good for top overflow but the vertical pipe needs to be slit either horizontally or vertically for better flow. Also, drilled holes may get clogged up easily overtimes. Since you haven’t added the media, you can remove the shower drain and the vertical pipe to let the water flow thru to see if that would fix the problem. If it does, you will for sure need to slit your vertical pipe to improve the flow.
@@PTranProductions I tried removing the drain and pipe but the water still rises to the point of almost overflowing. So I left the water pumping and found that the water level eventually stops at a certain point and doesn't actually overflow. The water level of the third barrel where the water returns to the pond doesn't overfill at all and sits right at the shower drain. Do you think it's maybe a water pressure issue and the staggering of my barrels is off?
I am going to copy your design. Love the way you have it set up to clean. I am also adding a skimmer filter. Do I run both pumps to the 3 barrel filter?
It would depend on your pump GPH. This system can only handle about 3170 GPH pump - could not keep up with 4500 GPH pump on initial trial. If your two pumps’ combined GPH is too strong, the 3-barrel system may not be able to keep up and your barrel #1 will overflow.
I tried out with 4500 GPH & 3170 GPH pumps at startup. This systems couldn’t not keep up with 4500 GPH flow rate but has been doing fine with 3170 GPH. My pond volume is about 6000 gallons and so far the system has been doing great. In term of fish load, I currently have 5 koi and 30 gold fish (not sure of the total weight) but according to online info, 2 cubic feet of K1 could handle 35 pounds of fish. I hope this would answer your question. Cheers!

Hi Scot, 2” uniseal is for 2” pipe not for 2” elbow which is bigger on the OD. So to get 2” uniseal over a 2” elbow is impossible. You can use 2” pipe cement to 2” elbow then slide the uniseal over the pipe portion flush against the elbow.

@@vanman9607 I have never thought of it being used for swimming pool. I don’t think it would work because it is a slow flow system and contains bio media which is meant to house the beneficial bacteria and non pressurized. You need a pressurized sand filter with high output pump with a chlorinator to kill any bacteria in the water for the swimming pool.
@@PTranProductions That's what I've been told is that pools require high output pumps for the sand filters to work, but if you replace the sand filter with this system a low flow system, you're still using roughly the same amount of water (an extra hundred gallons is nothing for a 16,000 gallon pool). you're still filtering out the algae, debris, which is what the sand filter does and it's still being chemically treated, but you wouldn't have to worry about too much pressure in the filter, or not enough pressure, both of which can make your sand filter useless.
@@vanman9607 Well, I have never seen it done before but I guess you can do a “trial and error’ run. Keep in mind a new pool sand filter system would cost less than this DIY system. So for economical reason, I wouldn’t recommend to try this for swimming pool.
@@PTranProductions This is a good set up, but I did something slightly different. I set up barrels similar to this with a pick up near the bottom that was tapped out the side with valves (like the one you use on your manifold set up) so that I can open them to drain the sludge that settles out and collects there. I just pump water through these barrels. Then, separately, I just stick a sponge in a 4 or 5 inch ABS pipe hanging vertically. I have 4 holes drilled at 90 degree spacing around the pipe and thread zip ties through these wholes to support the sponge. I have another pump pumping water into this pipe, and the bacteria sets up in the sponge to keep the nitrites and nitrates in check. The water quality tests well, and it's a simple set up.
Really love this video, thanks for the idea of three 55 gallons filteration, does that uniseal really work without leaking? How long does it last if you leave the barrels outside? Thanks I plan to do mine like this
Hi Benny Hoang, Yes, the Uniseals are flawless so far, no leaking at all. I am not sure about durability as this is my first time using them. But they’re made out of rubber so they would last a while.
Hi Mr. Wrighty, Thanks for stopping by! No, I have never made any claim that it’s my idea. It’s just my DIY system built based my research and study on other people ideas and suggestions like yours - thank you!
I don't mind you using my design at all, but a mention in your video would have been nice. You'll find it will work better using K1 in all tubs, Also the reason tub 1 is close to flooding when re-filling, is the media blocking the inflow pipe going into tub 2. If you clean one tub at a time I don't think this will happen.
@@Wrighty Yes, you’re absolutely right. I should have mentioned your original design and idea in the video. My apology! Your name is mentioned in the description though. I could have used K1 in all tubs but I went extra miles and ordered K2 all the way from California instead. Oh well, they all turn out well. Thanks for pointing out on the air lock issue. Yes, I have learned that lately after a few cleanings. I have to clear the media at the inlet of the second tub to clear the air and to avoid the overflowing in the first tub. Thanks again!
For JEBAO UV light, water needs to be pumped through and not gravity fed (as per manufacture’s instructions). So the UV light is hooked up after the pump and before entry to barrel #1. Check out this video for more details: ruclips.net/video/RgMD1Atzdok/видео.html

DIY 3-Barrel Filter System For Koi Pond - First Cleaning
ruclips.net/video/45riYB5iRB0/видео.html
Hello Mr Tran quick question, what size aerator are you using in your 3rd barrel?
8” air stone with 20W (1700 cubic inch/minute) air pump.
i have had the same setup running for years now and have had no complaints. did you say you used 30 gal barrels? I used 55. very clean and great set up! Happy Ponding as Wtighty says
Thanks!
Yes, my setup is on 30gal barrels.
Cheers! 👍
Thanks.
Hi Max,
I am running two pumps for my pond (6000 gallons).
@@PTranProductions Sounds good, Thanks for the info really appreciate it.
You are welcome! Good luck with your setup!
Can you send me the list what I needed to do this filtration system? Thanks
Please read the video description for more details.
Thanks!
Whats is the measurement from the inlet hole to the drain hole in second barrel? I dont know if the measurement matters. Or if I got to low if it will stir up settlement gunk. Thanks
It’s roughly 8”.

Ok, I just sent out.

hi, am trying to build this system. if possible could you send the plans to me .
thanks for you assistance
Please read the video description for more details.
Why does the barrels need to be different hight? Isn't it easier to keep them the same hight?
Barrels are set up at slightly different heights to allow a better flow of water from higher barrel to lower barrel. You can try to set them at the same level if you like.
Hi can you send me the items I need for this please,,I have the 3 barrels but nothing else...
Your email?
Hi I built the same filter system with 3 barrels but only running a 2000 hph submersible pump and currently the first and second barrel are overflowing. I'm not sure why as they're staggered in height for increased gravity flow too. Any tips or ideas?
There are 3 possibilities that may cause the overflow:
1. Barrel size: mine all are 30Ga. If yours are smaller than that could be the problem.
2. Pipe size between barrels - is it at least 2” diameter?
3. Is it just the air pocket that trapped in pipes between barrels? Here’s how to release the air pockets:
if your barrel 1 overflows, try to clear the media away from the inlet pipe in barrel 2 to release any air pocket.
@@gordontrinh731
Yes, shower drain is good for top overflow but the vertical pipe needs to be slit either horizontally or vertically for better flow.
Nice build, overkill, love it.
👍
Ucan never have too much filtration
Great video! How much media for each barrel? I'm building this exact system. Thanks for the amazing info!!
Thanks! 1.75 cubic feet (CF) for the moving bed, 2 CF in barrel #2 and 2.25 CF in barrel #1
Great setup! Would like your plan to build for my pond.
Please see the video description for more details.
How many liters per hour is the flow?
It’s the same as the pump flow rate, which is 3150 GPH = 11,924 LPH
I am going to copy your design. Love the way you have it set up to clean. I am also adding a skimmer filter. Do I run both pumps to the 3 barrel filter?
It would depend on your pump GPH. This system can only handle about 3170 GPH pump - could not keep up with 4500 GPH pump on initial trial.
If your two pumps’ combined GPH is too strong, the 3-barrel system may not be able to keep up and your barrel #1 will overflow.
Hi, im still watching so forgive me if you answer this further in the videi but how many gallons can this handle? Also do you have a heavy fish load?
I tried out with 4500 GPH & 3170 GPH pumps at startup. This systems couldn’t not keep up with 4500 GPH flow rate but has been doing fine with 3170 GPH. My pond volume is about 6000 gallons and so far the system has been doing great.
In term of fish load, I currently have 5 koi and 30 gold fish (not sure of the total weight) but according to online info, 2 cubic feet of K1 could handle 35 pounds of fish.
I hope this would answer your question.
Cheers!
What size pond will this work for ? and where/how do you do the pick up.
This system works for up to 6000 gal pond. The “pick up”? Do you meant input pump?
@@PTranProductions Well really I mean the pipe that supplies the input. What kind of filter do you put over the end of it or do you use a pump on the bottom of the pond/pool in a mussel style cage???
1-1/2” ABS pipe with submersible pump at the bottom of the pond (retrofitted bottom drain). Yes, the pump is a DIY enclosure/leave cage or you so called the mussel style cage. You can watch some other videos on my channel for more details.

ruclips.net/video/0kculkMQ0is/видео.html
When i removed the lids from my barrels, the barrels seemed to lose their roundness... is this normal? Will the round shape return so the lids fit ??
I don’t experience that with my barrels. Perhaps, your barrels are not sitting on a level floor/platform (?)
@@PTranProductions no...they are...i wonder if it's because the cut was made just below the weld joint of the lid to the barrel..the saw wouldn't get closer due to a guide. I filled it with water and will try a better strap to see if i can get it back into shape

Hey its me scot in Arkansas.. how do I get a 2inch uniseal over a 2inch elbow
Hi Scot,
2” uniseal is for 2” pipe not for 2” elbow which is bigger on the OD. So to get 2” uniseal over a 2” elbow is impossible. You can use 2” pipe cement to 2” elbow then slide the uniseal over the pipe portion flush against the elbow.

Would this work with a pool instead of a koi pond?
Do you mean swimming pool?
@@PTranProductions Yes
@@vanman9607
I have never thought of it being used for swimming pool.
@@vanman9607
Well, I have never seen it done before but I guess you can do a “trial and error’ run. Keep in mind a new pool sand filter system would cost less than this DIY system. So for economical reason, I wouldn’t recommend to try this for swimming pool.
HOW MANY GPH IS YOUR FILTER?
The filter is fed by a 3170 GPH 24VDC pump.
Good job👍🏽
Thank you!
The water quality tests well, and it's a simple set up.
nice one beautiful can u send me cut list please

Hi Mr. Wrighty,
Thanks for stopping by!
@@Wrighty
Yes, you’re absolutely right.

How is the UV light piping run?
For JEBAO UV light, water needs to be pumped through and not gravity fed (as per manufacture’s instructions). So the UV light is hooked up after the pump and before entry to barrel #1.
