Thank you so VERY much for this. About to put my two peacock bass in an ibc and was looking for a detailed video for a DIY filter and this was the best I found. You've gained a subscriber
I appreciate your focus on functionality and ability of the filter vs the aesthetic. Beauty can be found in the simplicity and greatness of its design.
Ha, same pumps I use. I have a 4000 and a 6000. Priced well on eBay. I use the PVC Cutter as well. Great minds think alike, I'll be building that trashcan filter next year when I return from overseas. Awesome work brother cudos. I have gotten so many ideas from your videos
oh I wish you had taken more time installing the pump in this big stock tank pond as I am doing this size. maybe I missed it I will watch it again but unsure wish you had stocked it with plants and fish please do more videos with this 300 gal tank great idea I am going to do your DIY filter instead of buying one
this is a classic and workhorse of a filter!!!! I always went the baki shower route, they are super fun and look really cool, you just might have to build one of those for the hell of it one day?!!! Best shower filters you will ever use!!!!!
Man I wish i saw ur videos 2 years ago would have so made my diy pond setup way easier !!! Still cheap but tough long process when building my pond!!! Ugh.. videos are very well explained and detailed.. SMH lol will def start watching for any of my future pond adventures . Thank you I can send pic of first filter and pond
Sponges were the only difference in my set up. Thank you for this. Have the same 300 gallon tub with sand bottom and made this filter. So excited about muh basement pond.
I essentially made the same thing with a 5 gallon bucket. Works like a charm. I never thought of using a trash can. Stacked two milk crates in the pond and put the pump in the upper one. Placed a paver and bucket right on top. If it fails it fails without any catastrophe.
question for you, what is the other black crate thing you have on the bottom of the tank to the right of your filter system coming into the pond as I look at it ? please explain
The only point I would say for folks to understand is the lift. make sure your pump can handle the vertical lift from the pump to the top of the Can. you also pointed out in the last vid to make sure not to use the fire-resistant polyfill but did not this time around maybe a good point to pin for folks watching. Just recently subscribed but been enjoying your content. I am into guppies and smaller fish but the wild and big ones are neat too. What brought me here: I picked up one of these pumps based on one of your previous vids as we adopted two turtles from a family who needed to rehome. I decided to go the 300-gallon tub route and hopefully in a week or two will move them from their temp home to the indoor pound although it is going to be close to getting that pound down my stairs.
What about a threaded union between the elbow and the lid? They aren't "cheap", but it would let you glue more fittings to keep it a little more secure
About to make this filter for my bass who going in an ibc...one question...the hole you're drilling is 1 and three quarters but using a 1 inch uniseal....that's correct?
I’m wondering about the bottom of the tank where the sand is. How does that get cleaned and cycled? I like the holes at the top of the trash can, but think it’s missing the chance to filter closer to the bottom. Is there such thing as a cut off switch that triggers at a lower predetermined water level?
Can i reverse the flow to go to thebottom first thru the lava rock then up thru sponge rhen floss for easy cleaning ause i have ducks very mu ky and oily
Great simple design. I would add one thing though, an emergency overflow return that hopefully would never be needed. Right above the layer of poly just in case the poly clogged up enough to actually fill and overflow the can. It is probably overkill but might save flooding a basement or pumping the tank down to the pump intake level in the small trash can can. Thanks for the info and ideas.
This would be so cool in a reverse direction and make it easy forr me to clean the stock tank for my 2 baby ducks and i also do fish tanks and have really been watching all of your amazing videos
I watched you when you were around 15K subscribers, but I became disinterested after a while. I’m really glad I watched this video. There’s been a lot of improvement in terms of editing and presentation. I’ll definitely continue to watch if this style continues.
Your video is very informative I really like how u did it. Definitely bI will try to make one for my little 59 galón pond. A question though. How often do u change the media.
Honestly... I've had 4 of those pumps and they all do that. I suppose I should probably plug the controller in first... then the whole thing into the outlet. Which I'm realizing for the first time as I type this 😂
I have an above ground pool I think its about 12k gallons, could this work for storing my bait fish? not expecting aquarium type results just want to keep my bait alive! Thanks!
Absolutely! It would be a great bait fish system. I'd just have some foam or mesh over the intake for the pump if you're going to have a lot of little fish! Otherwise the bigger the pump, the cleaner the water and the healthier the fish!
@SC fish keeping if u want less maintenance, the water should hit mechanical filtering first (Course pad -> Medium pad -> Fine floss or pad) then the water should hit the biological media such as porous ceramic/glass etc (around 1kg of bio media per 100 liters if lightly stocked or else 2 kg per 100 liters), then the water should hit chemical if needed. As you have it setup now, the polyfill will get clogged very fast, and you will have to do alot of water changes to reduce the nitrates.
im making the same pond you did on your porch do i need to add anything to the water to make it ok to put my fish in and do i need to let it run for a coupple of days first?
he just does not answer these questions, I have city water so I do need to add a conditioner to my water or let it sit for a day to let the chlorine evaporate out of it then its safe to put the fish in it. I personally will fill my 300 gallon tank up fuller. as i am about to set mine up and use this filteration system Zac has made. BTW if you have well water you can put your fish right in the pond.
Building the same as the 110g with the 10g filter, for a back yard bait tank. How many brim/white perch you think it could hold and keep alive for atlest 2 weeks? I guess how many fish that size would you limit to a 110gallons.
@fondestvirgo you could add a release valve if you want to, but for me that's just one more area the could give you issues or leaks! Clean the media by grabbing a bucket of the pond water and rinsing it out in that! Otherwise if the inside of the trashcan ever gets so dirty you need to do a deep clean, just drain the water out, give it a good scrub and rinse it out before setting it back up! It's pretty minimal maintenance for as big of a filter it is!
What would you do differently if this was going on an outdoor pond? I live in the south, so winter temps aren't brutal. They do get into the upper 20's for lows occasionally though. Thanks
I'm putting together a Intex above ground pool for some Koi. About 600 gallons. Will this set up work and also how tall does the ceramic pot need to be in a 32 gallon trash can? My pool is 86-5/8 x 59"x 23-5/8. Thank you so much.
@onsloth it can be used on a straight/flat surface sure! But there are other types of seals and PVC connections you could use as well that might make a better connection! The uniseal works the same, I just use that due to the curve of the trash can!
@@SCFishKeeping thank you. I like how much easier uniseals are than bulk heads. I was gonna make a hang on top filter with one of those black (yellow lid) containers...is why I asked
@onsloth I've used those for that exact purpose too! They're a good size! Just make sure you support the entire bottom of the tote so that it doesn't bow out between 2x4s or anything like that!
Love your channel. Just curious how often you need to change the media in the filter. I'm guessing it depends on the number of fish, but ballpark answer would be great.
Me, too. I ordered my pump and seals today. Will pick up remainder of items in town. I am tired of practically standing on my head to remove my filter boxes from my ponds to clean. They are small so I have to do it often. If this works I will build 2 more.
I am always told you do not change the media or clean it cuz then you disrupt the biomedia thats needed to maintain your tank . I was always cleaning out my filter so now im gonna try it without cleaning it. tell me if i a m wrong please ?
love these diy videos. the girlfriend will be pissed when we get our house and I build a pond and filter for it hahaha. btw that clip is amazing, loved watching biodome growing up
Any recommendations on fish between 10-20cm (roughly 4-8 inches) that can live in a pond just under 500L (roughly 130 US Gallons) & 22-26°C (roughly 71-79°F) if the pond also doubles as a splash pool during summer? Besides goldfish, as our other pond already has them, we are hoping to have luck with a nice catfish specie?
Thank you so VERY much for this. About to put my two peacock bass in an ibc and was looking for a detailed video for a DIY filter and this was the best I found. You've gained a subscriber
Thanks for the step by step instructions and not just glossing over it.
I appreciate your focus on functionality and ability of the filter vs the aesthetic. Beauty can be found in the simplicity and greatness of its design.
SC fishkeeping channel is a good show. I like the mix a wild and exotic fish and simple diy builds.
I want to retire and grow my own fish. Your video is great Im a older woman this is very simple. Thank you, for taking the time to make the video

Zac your marketing team, is amazing. Very good build I did a bucket filter similar to your build
What a fantastic idea. I think I’ll try it in a rain collector bin, as I don’t use it. I hope to show you the results.
Great - have you or will you make a video showing how you maintain / clean it?

How do you clean out the trash can. I didn't see clean out valve? Great job
I essentially made the same thing with a 5 gallon bucket. Works like a charm. I never thought of using a trash can. Stacked two milk crates in the pond and put the pump in the upper one. Placed a paver and bucket right on top. If it fails it fails without any catastrophe.
Nice work! It really is like building a large canister filter 😎
Was getting ready to do same style filter for my 300. Was unsure about pump to use but thanks to your video i know what one to go with.
question for you, what is the other black crate thing you have on the bottom of the tank to the right of your filter system coming into the pond as I look at it ? please explain
Very beautiful. How do you clean the filter when dirty?
I love your videos they make me happy
Alway good to know how to make a cheap diy pond filter
Great video as always Zac, and I give you a shout out Saturday
I am really impressed with your videos smart
why does the polyfill go before the sponges? whats the difference between the 2? I'd think the sponges would be first....
I was not ready for how deep that voice was ("Not Vanna", your beautiful assistant)

Amazing build Zac!
Totally like your videos. I have the same tube
Hey @SCFishingKeeping how can i turn this DIY filter canister to a UV canister for its best use?
Nice guide. Need to add a tube light to the ceiling...
Awesome video keep it up fella
that size filter if bought made is over 1K great job bro!
What about a threaded union between the elbow and the lid? They aren't "cheap", but it would let you glue more fittings to keep it a little more secure
Awesome job! Whats the purpose of RAS system, where does the water come from & return to. I only saw a one way system where water goes to pond.
I have a 41,000 gallon pond, and the filters are very spendy. Is this something that I could use for it
About to make this filter for my bass who going in an ibc...one question...the hole you're drilling is 1 and three quarters but using a 1 inch uniseal....that's correct?
can we add solar for out side
Omg I work at Walmart for my part time job and I put out exactly that brand and the same colors of sponges 😱😱😱😱
Can you tske the pump spart to clean the impeller?
any chance you can do a video showing the upkeep for these types of tanks and filters?
I’m wondering about the bottom of the tank where the sand is. How does that get cleaned and cycled?
I like the holes at the top of the trash can, but think it’s missing the chance to filter closer to the bottom.

Just awesome Zac! You can be surprised at what you already have around the house you can include in the builds too help save even more =)
where do you get the black plastic pond thing?
Can i reverse the flow to go to thebottom first thru the lava rock then up thru sponge rhen floss for easy cleaning ause i have ducks very mu ky and oily
Great and easy to do

what siae are the pvc pipes and the hole in the gargage can?

What is the formula for the tank filtration. use 300 gals, how many gals get filtered per hour
Is the pump strong enough to pump from bottom up and out with sprraybar to make a duck shower

How often do you have to clean the filter?
Should the lower drain be at the height of the pot on the inside
Will the gunk be able to make it up and through that can? Or will it just settle at the bottom and pile up
Anyone else do the finger wave in the beginning!! 👆👆Bio dome 👆👆.. look I'm a duckbill platypus!! 😂 Dope video.. interesting way for a filter
Can this work for messy du k pond also?
Nice job
Your video is very informative I really like how u did it. Definitely bI will try to make one for my little 59 galón pond. A question though. How often do u change the media.
Best ending ever!!!
How do you do a water change or does it not need one
Zac can you use a big Trash can for an outside koi pond , Not a stock tick. Thank you I love your videos.

Why did that plug spark...?
Honestly... I've had 4 of those pumps and they all do that. I suppose I should probably plug the controller in first... then the whole thing into the outlet. Which I'm realizing for the first time as I type this 😂
@@SCFishKeeping ah 😂😂
It was a "spark plug"?
Where can I find that exact pond your using
Can we add bell siphon under teracotta pot
Awesome stuff right there, I was wondering does the system get rid of ammonia from the water?

Could I just zip tie the pump to a cinder block close to the surface of the water?
Yupp lol, I have mine on top of a milk crate, but I have aggressive fish so I put it inside another milk crate so the stingrays don't destroy my pump
VERY GOOD JOB ZACK I WANT ONE FOR MY OUTSIDE 400 GALLON POND.
