Badmotorfinger was when they started introducing grunge elements, and Superunknown was when they went full grunge. Alice In Chains were initially a glam metal band, they changed their style and became a grunge band on Facelift. Nirvana weren't the first grunge band, Green River, Melvins and Mudhoney released grunge albums before them, but Nirvana did release a grunge album before Nevermind (Bleach) and Nevermind did popularize grunge. Although, arguably, Mother Love Bone had the first 'hit' grunge song, and the first grunge album with mainstream appeal (not mainstream success though, since the band broke up after Andrew Wood died).
