I just have to make this comment....As a single recently retired man, I really appreciate the recipes and level of detail you guys provide for cooking. I have cooked carefully selected simple things with simple recipes most of my life, but the basics of daily country cooking escape me. That is changing. Growing up in the urban south, our family almost always had a garden of varying size and even raised a beef calf in an adjoining lot a few times, so I am familiar with growing things. My mother was a wonderful cook and to a great extent cooked from canned or frozen foods that we raised. That stuck with me, and I have canned and froze purchased food most of my adult life, or when time would allow. My wife was always the cook. There is nothing better tasting and healthy than home preserved foods in the winter. I still have two canners and a large dehydrator and know how to use them. I also recently bought a vacuum sealing machine and food processor to help with processing and preserving more food this year. If a pandemic ever (it will) occurs again, I don't want to be in the same position I am in currently.
Again, I enjoy your videos and appreciate the information you provide as you continue learning yourself. God Bless you all.

I grew up in Southern Missouri and my husband grew up in the Phoenix area. :-) We have both always wanted to create our own place to raise meat, grow veggies & fruits and teach our future generations how to respect and live with nature. Our next step is to begin our tiny rabbit ranch, then move up to an acre in the city to have enough room for more animals. It's awesome to have a channel like yours to refer to; I really enjoy your projects and we're trying out some of your recipes. Keep creating, we love watching.

Hello; as always I so enjoy your videos. Live chats get distracting for me and as a senior citizen , sometimes the chats get going a little too fast to keep up with and then I loose what you're saying , so this is much better. Love your canning videos Sara, brings back such good memories of when My Mom and sisters and I canned. I was the youngest of seven. And we lived on a large ranch that my Dad loved and my Mom had a Hugh garden. ( And we had 500 Apple trees, we made apple butter in copper kettles over wood fire and stirred it for hours with these long handled wood stirring paddles. Made apple cider. Us kids Sold apples at a fruit stand my Dad made s,so we could buy school clothes. We all belonged to 4-H and then I fell in love with a city slicker for 34 yrs till the lord called him home.. Oh well, but those were the best times of my life. Sorry I got long winded, that's why I don't comment much. You both do a great job. Hugs from Livonia, Michigan. God Bless. oh ya, Hi Girls.

I watch all your videos that I can catch, but would love to see you both all dressed up for church on Sunday morning, & a picture of your church. I was raised on a farm with 8 siblings, and we raised over an acre of planted garden. It was nothing for mom & us girls to can well over 500 jars of food to get us through to the next gardening season. And we had a huge freezer that we kept full of garden stuff & fresh pork & beef. It was hard work, but we always had plenty of good ole home grown, home cooked food. I thank God for that experience. God Bless your family.

In these days more and more people are waking up to be self reliant instead of the (old, outdated and downright destructive) "get a good education so you can get a high powered, high paying job with a big corporation" nonsense, you're a valuable asset...! Your subscribers have grown to over 300G and that, plus the many comments, is hands down proof of that. It seems just rather recently it was in the upper 200Gs as I was looking to see it surpass the 300G...and I missed it...! So, a belated congrats! I live in New York City, in a smallish apartment, but you have made me more aware of light and nature, and inspired me to grow some vegetables in my sunny windows. I've started with scallions, and in the Fall I'll plant garlic. I don't have sun all day in any window, so I move the plants from the southeast facing to the southwest facing windows every day. Even city dwellers can be (very part-time) homesteaders! Thanks for your inspiration!

Rosendale! When we would go to Packers games we knew that if we used the restroom at the stadium we could make it to Rosendale before needing to use a restroom again. Everyone in our southern Wisconsin county did the same thing and would always stop at a bar on the east side of Main Street where the Mobil Station is now. It closed some time ago and they tore it down to build the gas station. We also knew to ALWAYS drive the speed limit going through Rosendale because if you were even 1 MPH over the speed limit you'd get a ticket. In fact, I remember they used to sell T-shirts that said, "Rosendale: Just the Ticket!"

Gregory Roy start! Right where you are at. Add foods into your landscaping or container garden on your patio. Just get started.
If you are lucky enough to still have farmers market open, buy a lot and learn to can. I wish I would have done this before we moved to the country because then it would have been much easier to learn larger scale gardening already knowing how to can. Trying to learn too many skills at once is overwhelming.
If you are thinking of rabbits as meat, most city’s consider them domestic pets so you could start learning how to care and breed in your back yard. They are quiet and not smelly.
Go ahead and just start where you are... there are many skills you can learn still living in the city. Do a RUclips search for Urban homesteaders. Get started and Good luck!

I love watching y'all & we are working on doing more things to make us more self-sufficient. We just moved here a year ago onto 19 acres but most of that is a hollow with wooded hills. We're also working on clearing about 3 acres of old pasture land for a cow or two in the future. When hubby and I reached our 50's, finally bought a home with enough room for a tiny urban homestead. It's been heaven. Chickens, rabbits, Nigerian Dwarfs (for a while until zoning said no 😭), garden and fruit trees.
My question to you is, do you have plans for the future when you reach retirement age and beyond?
We are at that stage right now, both retired, in our late 60's. Age and health is taking it's toll and we're having to navigate a new reality. The last 25 years went by in a blink of an eye.

      Karla, to answer your question,
regarding the next step for being "60 something". Not sure what health issues you are dealing with, but my husband and I are in our early 70s and farming away! We are in reasonable health and just keep on going... Yes, except for the cattle herd, we carefully evaluate what we will undertake on our large farm. Wish we could give part of our 350 acre farm to Kevin & Sarah, but we are under a local land trust. Cannot subdivide. A state effort to protect open land in New Hampshire. With today's challenges, we plan to raise Barred Rock chickens for eggs and meat. I want to also raise geese again. Like the Toulouse and Pilgrim breeds. And if course we have multiple gardens. I would consider Nigerian dairy goats. Best of luck with whatever you decide - Diane

My husband and I, are 2 years older than Kevin and Sarah. We've contemplated if we want to continue on our land, as we age, or consider downsizing. There are many rabbit holes to get lost in, attempting to answer that question. Because no-one has a crystal ball of how your health is going to play-out in future. So how we answer the question of the future is - asking whether we'd enjoy the downsized lifestyle, on a smaller plot of land and having to consult whether we can fart within 2 metres of the neighbours fence-line, without incurring a complaint.
The answer is inevitably, "no"! We would not like to live that way. So even if we have to maintain this lifestyle, with increasing aches and pains, it's preferable to the postage stamp lifestyle, we escaped in the first place. But that's us. It's not going to be for everybody. Some people would prefer the closeness, smaller sized living, offers. So what they envisage for retirement, will be different to what we do. :)

@@dianehall5345 , you're so lucky to be able to still do those things! I have an autoimmune disease that has rendered me nearly incapable of walking in the last two years. I was a transit bus driver for 26 years, always active and my husband and I fished, hunted, camped, hiked. Started going downhill the last two years working. Just made it to full retirement when my body gave up. It's been hard giving up a job I loved, and not being able to do the things I had planned for retirement.
But, we are still here, persevering. My kids and family are okay. We have everything we need. So, all and all I'll say we are lucky too. Continued good luck and health to you and your loved ones. 😊

@@ladydriver0_0 Thanks Karla, and I hope you enjoy what ultimately fits your circumstances too. Just a quick note of what you said to Diane, I also have an autoimmune disease. Going on 30+ years now. Knowing what acreage asks of me, it became a mission to defy the statistical odds. I did a lot of medical research, not on my condition, but on what prolongs biological functions the most. I made a lot of lifestyle changes, my physicians weren't asking me to do, to manage my condition better. Which has resulted (thus far) in being relatively healthy.
I always wonder what I will physically be able to do, beyond 60. Statistically, I'm supposed to be deteriorating, the longer I have my condition. But I've never been one to follow statistics. My goal has always been to defy them. While I'm very appreciative of the medical team I have (and will continue to consult with them) we have very different ideas of how to treat my condition. Because I'm able to voluntarily experiment with things they would say, I shouldn't try - while they have to wait the 10+ years, for research to vindicate my results.
Please continue to listen to your treating physicians, but don't stop with them. Fade the statistics to the shadows, where they belong. I know all about the statistics they'll tell you, and the horrible things you can look forward to. It's not their fault, it's just their job to tell you that stuff. But do your own research into how to improve the biological functions in your body, which are struggling at present. Anyway, best of luck. :)

Thanks; enjoyed listening to your comments, which shed light on why you make a good team. I'm in my 60's, retired and lived most of my adult life in the city. But, as a yound child, I grew up on my grandparent's farm. I marvel when I see you working and caring for your garden and small animals. It's amazing how your life mirrors what I experienced as a child. And, as for my grandparents, I'm sure they would agree they lived a rewarding life. Good luck to you both and I wish all God's blessings for you and your family.

You could fell and sell some walnut, oak or hickory trees and clear some land, that way it wouldn't be a waste for you, and it's good money. But, even though you're young yet, one day, you may be glad you don't have more to care for! Take it from an active 61-year-old. You just slow down, lol.

I’m actually quite jealous of how well you guys work together. My husband and I both want a homestead. But...while he enjoys the benefits of homesteading (growing our own food as well as the peace and quiet and being self reliant).... I’m the one that does all the work. I have to beg him for help when there is something I just can’t do alone. Otherwise he says it’s just “not his thing”. He has no interest in gardening (but likes to eat from it) no interest in the work to care for animals (but enjoys watching them, and enjoys eating them). He has no interest in learning any of it. I remind him that if something happened to me, he would lose that life and die without me LOL

For your next Q&A session - a few suggestions - I would like your reaction. Have you ever considered keeping bees for all the benefits they offer - food - wax - pollinating your plants - and 2) growing your own fodder indoors for your animals?
