- Come along with me as I walk the length of the Monsal Trail in the Peak District, England. The Monsal Trail is in the Monsal Dale which is in the centre of the Peak District National Park, starting just north of Bakewell, 10 miles north of Matlock and 8 miles west of Chesterfield in Derbyshire. The trail runs along the former Midland Railway line for 8.5 miles between Blackwell Mill, in Chee Dale and Coombs Road, at Bakewell. A wonderful walk in the Peak District National Park!

Good morning Mary. This is one of my favorites of your walks. The viaduct is a beautiful architectural design. What a lovely video. Thanks for sharing. Blessings and safe hiking.
Glad you enjoyed it Vickie😊
Thanks for this very nice video and comments that you give on this trip. I hope that I will be able to walk this trail once. Greetings from The Netherlands.
Thank you!
This video captures captures just why we walk these trails. Thank you Mary for showing us how accessible it is to experience beauty, freedom and peace X
Thank you so much Mum ☺️
Very much enjoyed Mary, History has all kinds of emotions to expound, not the least there. My uncle in Oamaru New Zealand lives in Wye Street, most other streets are English rivers also! Where next? Winter closing in. Keep warm, much loved Mary.....
Thank you Robin! The video this coming Sunday is a walk around New Mills in The Peak District which I filmed just before lockdown. We are hoping to go to the Lake District for a couple of days as soon as we can which I will film, just have to wait to hear when we are allowed. We were planned to go beginning of November but obviously had to cancel. Hope you are keeping safe and well 😊
Hi Mary very nice video 1 thats been on my bucket list for a while i love walking through history especially the old railway lines and love the autumn colours so thanks for the preview stay safe nigel
Glad you enjoyed it Nigel, thanks so much for your wonderful comments. I hope you get there soon and I highly recommend Autumn!
Lovely! 😊. Look at those autumn colors! 😍. Those tunnels are so cool 😎.
Thank you Karen 😊
I LOVE listening to you talk...I hope that doesn't come off as weird , but your voice is very soothing and calming for me. Another beautiful video !... I hope you are staying strong and safe in these hard times. I really look forward to seeing your newest videos and hope to watch many more to come. Be well my friend.
I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos Christopher! No, not weird at all🤣 Yes I am staying strong and safe, thank you so much. I hope you too are keeping well 😊
@@MarysOutdoorAdventures im keeping my head up and marching on. These are some tough, dark times but your videos deliver a ray of sunshine and positivity to my day .... thank you so very much.
Dreamy and breathtaking at the same time.
Love the way you go into all the nooks and crannies along the way as I’m a very curious person also, your attention to detail satisfies me to no end and is very appreciated and of course the accompanying music is the cherry on top.
Thank you Mary, I will never tire of your beautiful and informative videos, they are a treasure.
🙏🏻🤗🤟🏻❤️
Thank you very much Anita! I am so pleased you enjoy all that I do with the videos and I promise to continue to be curious for you 😊
Ooooooh what a lovely girl and guide👍👍👍
Glad you think so - thanks Rob!
Please tell me you're not married! You're my perfect match! Ahem. In all seriousness, thanks for the incredible video. I first did the Monsal Trail with my Father in 2004. I did it again in 2014 but accidentally took an unintentional long-cut which added an extra four miles... my legs were aching! Thanks again for the awesome content and keep up the videos. :D
It's really interesting to see a former industrial landscape return to its green state (or maybe transition to a new green state). Pretty wild to see how nature heals itself and man's handiwork gains a sort of new dignity when draped with moss and waterfalls.
I couldn't agree more John! Hope you are keeping well 😊
Thank you Mary, watched you do the PCT. Love your productions and the way you present yourself. Love you sharing your home with me. Keep up the fantastic work and hope you do another significant hike, maybe the CDT :-)
That is so lovely of you to say John, thank you very much!
How wonderful to see you on the Monsal Trail, such a great choice for the wetter weather months but really anytime right? We walked it last January from Bakewell and turned around at Cressbrook Mill and we definitely have to go back to finish the rest because it just looks amazing! The fall colors were breathtaking and your video as always just a joy to watch with so much great information as well. We also walked up that hill at the Monsal Viaduct to get a better view (and have a cup of tea at the pub on the top) but then found the view from the bottom up where the river was flowing even more enchanting. Thank you so much, hopefully we'll get to do "part 2" after Christmas :)
Thank you so much, yes it’s certainly an any weather walk! Hope you get to go back soon 😊
epic video as always, i was on the monsal trail the day you uploaded this video, couple of things i would like to add, there is 3 places you can get refreshments on the trail, hassop station, millersdale station, blackwell mill, millersdale station is definitley open, not sure about the other 2, the other thing is, where you turned round to come back at the viaduct if you had carried on a bit further you would have come to the entrance to the haddon tunnel ( nearly a mile long ) unfortunately this is blocked off, but if you go to the rowsley end you can get into the tunnel, ( the steel door is stiff but not locked ) now there is plans to reopen the tunnel to extend the monsal trail, apparently the owners off haddon hall are holding things up, typical.
Fantastic information for anyone planning on heading out there - thanks so much for your comments Graham!
Hello again Mary, just wanted to say thanks for yet another fantastic video on RUclips.
I myself have walked the route many of times, and never get bored with it.
With me being a Railway Enthusiast, I enjoy it more.
On another note, it would be lovely to see the tracks put back down again and turn it back into a mainline railway again between Derbyshire and Manchester.
There have been plan's for a local heritage railway society to go from Matlock to Bakewell, but sadly nothing has ever happened yet.😢
Anyway on yet another note, have you ever done the Cromford and High Peak Railway walk yet?
That's another railway walk I've done myself in the past too.
Anyway once again my lovely, thanks for a lovely video, you've got such a lovely voice, and very informative about the area's you visit.
All the best from. Devon Boy (Mike) 🙂
Hello again Mike 😊 No I don't believe I have done that walk, I have taken a look and it looks lovely. I'll add it to my never ending list 😁 So glad you are enjoying the videos and thanks so much for your comments!
Lovely blog Mary. Very informative and interesting. You captured those vibrant Autumn colours beautifully. Good tip about that torch... ;-) :-)
Thanks so much Mark! 😊
Wow, that story about Litton Mill and the orphans seems like it is straight out of a Dickens novel! But what beautiful countryside now. I like the idea of turning old rail lines into hiking trails. Thanks for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it Reverend Al 😊
Amazing hope you do another walk this year if not more lockdowns
Hi I’m planning to do Bakewell to Monsal Head on Wednesday , will need my wet weather gear I think! But we don’t dissolve do we?
Lovely (as always) film thank you x
Hope to build my stamina up to do full route one day
Have fun Jo! I'm out hiking tomorrow too - looks like its going to get a lot worse and windier in the afternoon. Like you say, we are not made of sugar! 😆
🦋❤
Uai, And the snow where it is ?
Onde está a neve ? Belo lugar 🐦🌳
Ah! Equal tunnel on a bike track near the Pond of the English
Great vid! What type of surface is this trail? I can tell the tunnels are tarmac, but couldn’t quite determine what the rest of is was like? Thanks
Thanks Mark. It is a flat stone path.
Mary I loved the walk along !! And of course there couldn't possibly be a better narrator in all of UK !!!! Personally you make me feel like you're really sharing something with me !!!
But that's just u being u ☺️ ..
A few days ago I was looking at some pics of Crabtree meadows on the J.M.T and, well, I couldn't help but think of you being in lock down AGAIN and how wonderful it was after so many high passes and the up n down of some of the JMT.
And i thought ofwhat you said about having recently made so many wonderful memories of trails in your area. Not to mention that crazy trip you and Derek took together that was about a week long. But a memory nonetheless. it lifted my heart to think you have those things to look back on not to mention the incredible photographs n videos 😀👍🏽👍🏽.
I think part of the problem with this pandemic is that people start to get a little bit too relaxed and let their guard down and then we find ourselves right back to square one. I'm sad to have to say that the US is showing a very bad example of what to do.
But this is what memories are for ya, these moments of reflection !!
Well my friend, peace and keep on rocking the free world ☺️
What a lovely comment to read Traky Boy, that is so kind. Its funny as I was only writing about Crabtree Meadows on Friday! What a wonderful part of the world it is. I hope you and your family are keeping well 😊
@@MarysOutdoorAdventures 😂😅👏🤭 great minds think alike 🤪🤗
Great video, did you do this on a weekend or a week day? Which car park did you use?
Thanks Natalie! I walked this on a Wednesday and I parked in a lay-by in Chee Dale.
Such a lovely video, Mary. Your videos always brighten my day! Do you know why they warn folks not to touch the sides of the tunnels? Warm wishes from the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee! 🌄
Good question! I was wondering the same and hadn't managed to find an official answer. My best guess would be that as they are so old there is likely to be dirt or grime that is perhaps toxic?
Very Nice, I usually go to Dove Stones at Saddleworth Moor. I've never been here but after seeing it I will, Please can you tell me what is the best day to go and which is the best car park, I live in Droitwich Worcestershire, Thanks
Thank you! I walked this on a Wednesday as weekends are usually very busy and I parked in a lay-by in Chee Dale. There are plenty of pay and display carparks in the centre of Bakewell and a small car park next to the trail at Bakewell Station and at Hassop Station next to the trail.
@@MarysOutdoorAdventures Hello Mary and thank you so much for your reply. You should try to go to the Trinnacle at Dove Stones, Saddleworth. Its beautiful but if you go up by the water fall by careful, it can be difficult in places and it's a hard climb but you will love it when you get to the top. You should try get there early about 8.00am or before then you can park with no difficulty, it's £ 4.00 all day. Once again Many Thanks, Don.
Another beautiful production. You must have been up early for Monsall trail to be so quiet, even midweek.
Yes I did David. I set off around 6am and got there before sunrise..I had to wait in my car for the light 🤣
@@MarysOutdoorAdventures I thought as much. I have cycled Monsall many times and it has always been busy.
You last video inspired me to get out.
I completed a full circular from Surprise view to higher tor, stanage edge, burnage edge and across to Longshaw and Padley Gorge....fantastic day,
Thanks for the nudge
Wow that sounds a fantastic day in a wonderful area. So glad you had a great time!
Interesting to see how things change over time...the old cotton mill, the quick lime mill. Wonder what our industries of today will look like 100 years from now? thanks for the video.
It certainly is Tom! Thanks so much.
A wonderful time of year to be hiking
The Kilns also lit from the bottom In the bad ole days poor travelers would sleep topside because of the warmth and some time roll into the kiln where the carbon monoxide gas would kill them 😳
Gosh! Thats quite dreadful 😳
Is this a hard trail to do I've just started walking but suffer with back issues xx
Not at all - it is really straight forward and very accessible. It's also flat the whole way 😃
In Alaska, we drove through an active railroad tunnel under the mountain. It is the Whittier tunnel (www.dot.state.ak.us/creg/whittiertunnel/index.shtml) They control when cars can go through because the Alaska Railroad still uses it. On the sides are small openings into rooms. Those rooms are to escape into in case the tunnel collapses or an earthquake occurs. I noticed your tunnels had those small openings as well. Another exceptional video from you. John from MI (AT 2021)
Thanks so much John!
Those recesses in the tunnels are refuges; they were built for track engineers to move out of the way should a train pass as there is not much clearance between the tunnel wall and the train.
@@adamfox3733 Sounds logical. I guess I was partly correct. But the tunnel in Alaska definitely had emergency egress rooms and they had markings to show which one you were in. John
Ever thought of Philadelphia Cheese sponsoring your channel?
No, but their plant based spread is delicious - so if they wanted to they could!! 🤣🤣
