First of all, thank you so much for this reaction. I love this band and it always warms my heart to see other people discover them and appreciate them.
Second, I am going to write you a novel, you have been warned :D
Versailles belongs to the Visual Kei sub genre, which is defined more by aesthetics than a specific style of music. If you decide to dive deeper into it, you will discover that many of the bands mix and match different genres either within a single song or throughout their discography. The genre is very varied, although mostly the music is on the heavier side. With Versailles specifically though, you pretty much always get something similar to this.
The band was founded in 2007 by Kamijo (vocals) and Hizaki (red dress guitar), who had both already had success with their previous projects. Possibly because they were both already established within the scene, Versailles kind of skipped the usual beginning stages of a new band and went straight into being epic. Their first single Revenant choir is kind of their manifesto, presenting the theme of the band as aristocratic French vampires (there is more to this, but I try to limit myself a little here). They released their first full album Noble in 2008 through Kamijo's own label before signing with a major label at the end of the year. However, after their major debut single Ascendead master their bassist Jasmine You sadly passed away in August 2009 after a short illness. Masashi (the bassist here) started working for them as a support member and was introduced as a formal member some time later. However, Versailles still considers Jasmine You to be an "eternal member" and mentions him as part of the band when introducing themselves during live performances.
They went on to release three more albums before disbanding at the end of 2012, citing worries that their latest releases weren't as good as the earlier ones. Internet seems to largely agree with this sentiment, but I would struggle to name anything truly subpar ever released by them. In 2013, Kamijo started a solo project under his own name and the four others formed a new band called Jupiter with a new vocalist. Kamijo's solo work is excellent and also well worth checking out. I highly recommend The Symphony of the Vampire, it is a 37 minute minialbum that is composed as movements of a symphony and tells the story of Louis XVII of France (well, Kamijo's version anyway, with vampires ofc). The whole thing is accompanied by a music video (there is a subbed version on YT) and it is glorious. I am sure someone can tell you more about Jupiter should you be interested. I never really got into them since I followed Kamijo into Versailles and then followed him out again :D
Versailles announced a comeback in 2015 and they are still officially active, although they have not released much new music. They did drop a new single last year (Vogue) and it is amazing. However, their comeback has mostly meant a few tours and lives here and there. This particular performance concludes their (to date) last world tour and is especially significant since the venue (Nippon Budokan) is a very prestigious one. Basically if you are invited to perform there, you have pretty much made it as a band. Their dream (and particularly that of Jasmine You) was always to perform there. This is reflected in the song too, when Kamijo sings here "this place we dreamed of" instead of the actual lyrics "that place we dreamed of". The long pause is also not really part of the song, it is only in this performance as a moment of silence for their friend.
Sadly Yuki (the drummer) announced last year he was quitting music so their future activities seem more uncertain than ever.
Fun anecdote related to this concert: Kamijo had fallen off of the stage in Poland barely two weeks before and was injured badly enough that he had to perform sitting down for the rest of the tour. I can only imagine what kind of painkillers he is on here lol. But then this is also the same man who once passed out on stage due to exhaustion (in the middle of a song) and after regaining consciousness just finished the song and the gig like nothing had happened.
You mentioned that for this type of music you can't just get anyone of the street to sing and I very much agree. As I think would Kamijo, since he basically retrained his voice and adopted a completely new singing style to fit Versailles. If you check out his earlier work (Lareine) after only hearing Versailles, you would likely not be able to tell it is the same guy on vocals. He did the same thing again when starting his solo career, although the change is not as drastic.
I can also confirm they are absolutely phenomenal live. I have not seen them in a huge venue like this but while it looks amazing, they don't really need it. Kamijo is the best performer and showman I have ever seen, he is absolutely captivating live. It is clear he absolutely loves performing and no matter the size of the venue, his joy (and whatever other emotions he happens to be experiencing) is palpable and so contagious. If you ever get the chance, they are absolutely worth seeing live.
Some recommendations for further reactions: Masquerade, Ascendead Master, Vogue, God Palace, History of the Other Side, Destiny -the lovers-.

They are a Visual Kei band, which means they have Visual concept thar defines their look performance and songwriting.
In their case tbe Visual is that they are Baroque Era Vampires, and dresd in French Rococo inspired costumes.
If you wish to see Jasmine You, check out Ascened Masters. This and Aristocrats Symphony were released before they got a record contract. Once they signed they started recording their first album. Jasmine You died during the recording so the guitarist in the red dress Hizaki, played the bass to finish the album.
They have several live performance and several videos.
If you want to see a dedicated drum cam... check out Revenant Choir live Yuki version.
They are classified musically as Melodic Symphonic Power Metal.
Glad you enjoyed them. OH yes one thing, they are all men, that red dress is just a costume.
Check out Hizaki, the guy in the red dress song Rusalka.

    Versailles are very great band
I was firstly introduced not too long ago to the vocalist Kamijo solo music & then discovered this band, so no matter what you would listen from them, its always gonna be epic
They were on a break from 2015, I think they had a few silent comebacks here & there & they returned with a new single like a year ago, but Im not sure if there will be some new album, since I heard that their drummer Yuki announced in 2023 he will be retiring from music completely
Also a small note, that guitarist Hizaki, which u thought was a "she" is in fact a man, like everyone else in this band, but don't worry, pretty much everybody was thinking the same, I couldn't even believe it, since how a great job he's doing with that :D
But ending this, I would like to see songs like "Sympathia", "The Love From Dead Orchestra", "Masquerade" or "The Revenant Choir"

Great reaction. This is my favorite song of all time, no only for the music but also for the meaning it has for the band.
I've seen them live a couple of times in Japan and it was the most epic thin I've witnessed.

If my information is correct. The band was very emotional when they played this song. Not only for Jasmine's sake but on this concert the first lady of Japan at the time was watching one of her fav bands. *Edit* Every member has a black feather that was Jasmine's sort of trademark.

My all-time faves. Epic Neo-Classical metal. I'm a guitarist of 35 years raised on Classical and jazz until I heard Metallica back in '88 and when I heard these guys circa 2010, it really changed my perspective and style of playing; it was like, 'Whoa, finally a band that actually plays metal as if it were Classical music, or vise versa.' I do get a bit miffed that this song is almost always the one people react to (and sometimes never any others from them) since they have so many top-shelf quality songs like "Aristocrat's Symphony," "Ascendead Master," "Rose," "Red Carpet Day."
Also, appreciate that you pronounced Versailles correctly (since it's the former French royal palace). Most people seem so confused.

Fantastic to see a reaction by someone who can actually hear all the instruments. Not as common as people think, many reactions know it's amazing but just miss on things like Masashi on bass and the drums get overlooked because of how in pocket he plays. Every instrument fits in its place.
    Great stuff.
Don't stress on the DT reference, Hizaki (red gtr) has cited them as an influence in interviews and Teru (silver hair gtr) has cited Metallica and Pantera. They're also influenced by Japanese bands like X Japan and Malice Mizer (who the vocalist, Kamijo worked for as a roadie).

I saw them in October 2011, at the castle " Château de la charbonnière " near Orléans in France. It was... Maybe the best live I ever witnessed in my life & I did a fucking lot of live shows. I think it was the only once that they played in a real castle backyard, everything was perfect, it's like their motto (after ofc the French Royalty) musically no one error, the quality of the sound, the show everything. The organisation too was perfect, they did make mini-bus all around the country to come at the venue, after the show, they took a short shower then came meet & greet EVERY people that went at this show. Powermetal isn't my kind of metal, but holly fucking cow, they are just on an another level, like the whole Visual Kei, with bands like Dir En Grey/The Gazette/X-Japan/Moi Dix Mois/Deviloof etc.
Btw you can see a short french tv reporting of the show in the castle backyard on YT, "versailles chateau de la charbonnière" !

Would love to see a reaction to Dir en grey - Schadenfreude live. It's another "journey" song but of a completely different variety. Might not be your thing from what I can tell, but I think it's interesting enough regardless. Their music is pretty unique so they attract an audience of people with unrelated interests. They often do get compared to Dream Theater along with Tool, Korn, Mad Capsule Markets, Kuroyume, deathcore generally, Nina Hagen, etc.
Fun fact: the band name is from a song by Kamijo's (Versailles' singer) former band.

    Singer Kamijo
Bassist Makashi sorry for the spelling
    Drummer Yuki
    Final Fantasy Guitarist Teru
And the red dress Guitarist is Hizaki.
