Hey Maya, love watching your videos. Enjoy your enunciation, voice tone with clarity, and the ease at which you produce your material. The story telling used to inform viewers, your calm voice holds my interest, music and editing are fantastic. In short, what I'm saying is...great job lady! I found your channel couple weeks ago and eagerly await new videos. Enjoy your travels. God bless you both and keep you safe. Virtual 🤗.... CarrieJo Moench
So if we are premium members and don’t have to watch ads....does that in no way help you? A fan for life. ✌🏼💕

My great uncle was killed in WWII and is buried in the Netherlands. A teenage girl from there adopted his grave sight and wrote letters to my grandmother regularly about her life and how she kept up his grave sight. This young women is now an elderly women. Her daughter and granddaughters maintains the grave sight. We are from the USA. My sister was able to visit with her family a few years ago. She was so impressed with the hospitality of the people.
Dear Maya and Aladino, It was a pleasure to have you on board of the Kamper Kogge and at the Koggewerf this year. The smiles on your faces in the video, standing at the tiller and exploring below deck, are golden. You met her at her best, slightly smelling for warmed tar by the summersun, sailing a light breese at the river IJssel. Thank you for sharing how you sailed 'De Zwarte Dame' (as the crew calls her lovingly) with all the followers of Magic Carpet. Gerrie, crew Kamper Kogge
You guys are making better videos every time. This one, full of history, is extraordinary. And the happiness on Aladino's face is priceless! Thank you!💟
Dear La t 👍👌👏 Very well said! I definitely think the same and wanted to comment similar. But fortunately you have already done the work. Thanks! :-) ;-) Best regards, luck and health.
A magic episode . So proude to be Dutch. And has to be said . The video's getting better and better . I'm addicted and impatience for the next episode's.
My big take away is what incredible film makers you have become! I loved the expression of absolute delight on Dino's face as he took the tiller. This is one of the best episodes ever.
That furling/unfurling/reefing system for that big square main sail is awesome. Much more efficient than sending people up and down the shrouds to do it all by hand. And pointing 70 degrees on a rig like that is actually kind of impressive. Awesome vessel. Thanks for taking us along.
Great insight into the old hard days. My knowledge of European history and boat life is expanding rapidly with you in the Netherlands and 'Uma' in Norway. Both of your channels are doing a splendid job of educating me with information and superb views of the locals. Thank you.
I was totally enthralled every minute of this episode. You two actually brought me tears of joy. Part of it is certainly that my grandparents come from the Netherlands and lived along the sea, but it was also how you brought passion and art to the beauty of your experience! You two were actually glowing as you sailed that medieval behemoth jewel! Three Cheers for you two and especially the Kamper Kogge!
This is really unbeliveble. It is hard to imagine how the sailors live back this days, it is awsome. Thanks for this video and greetings from Zadar (Croatia) 😉
Coming from Dutch descendents from the 1100's, it was so incredible to actually see what sailing at that time was really like. Can't wait to see more from the Netherlands!
This raises your story telling and video recording to another level! It was so outstanding to see the vessel under sail and learn more about the construction. It was really great to see the closeup of the construction methods. THANKS for making this available to all of us. God Speed on future journey
Such a great video. That would be a tough life sailing in those times. I find it interesting that they formed a league of sorts to combat piracy and attacks on their shipping. You're such a good storyteller. A very talented young lady you are. Wishing you safe travels. ⛵
How amazing to see the minute details of the shipbuilding. But most wondrous to see was the look of awe that stayed on Aldino’s face the entire voyage! Thank you for sharing this fascinating bit of sailing history.
Maya, you should make an audio book, read by you, of episodes like this one. There were a couple of segments here that gave me a better "picture" than the video you were describing.
The best part of the video was Aladino's smile when he was sitting on the front of the ship! He looked so happy, and it's so lovely that you caught that on film! 🦋🌈💜
Ear-to-ear smile. That sailor's song near the middle was something like: hijsen, hijsen, hijsen, hij zoop als een vergiet, maar varen kon hij niet - hoist, hoist, hoist (*), he drank (**) like a colander, but he could not sail/navigate. The Dutch word "hijsen" means to hoist, like you'll have done with that sail, but it also means "drinking alcoholic beverage" and generally this ends up in getting drunk. (**) The Dutch word was "zoop" past tense of "zuipen" which is a level of drinking alcoholic beverage beyond "hijsen". So to carouse and to booze are probably better translations.
Cracy , the darkblue ship that showed up at 06 min 8sec l sold 3 years ago to a very nice guy here in germany . Nice to see her in a good shape and still floating . Thanks for that 👍
Your talking about the patience to wait for the right winds. If you’ve ever seen the play Oresteia the trilogy starts with the Greek army waiting for weeks for the right winds as their food supplies dwindle. There’s a movie version of the first act/play called Iphigenia. I’ve seen the play not the movie. Aladino’s comment that it was about the same on land reminded me of my favorite scene from Henry V. Henry is talking to a knight in his 60’s who had been trying to sleep in the mud. Don’t you wish you were in your bed in England? No Sire, my bed in England is no where near as nice as the king’s, but my bed here in France is the equal of the king’s
What a unique and wonderful experience! How blessed! Terrific video great narration as usual and excellent music. Keep up the good work and a very merry Christmas to you both.
I absolutely love watching you two! Your videos are about "stuff", not about you.... such an unusual element to RUclips videos in 2020! That said, you are both so interesting and informative and startingly beautiful!!! Love Aladino with your hair loose.....! x
If you put Sails on a Wooden box Aladino would be Happy!!! So to see him on that Boat was a real delight, He was the cat that got ALL the cream...... I smiled all the way through.. Thank you Both... :-)))) xxxx
An amazing day out on that boat. Thanks for showing us around the vessel and explaining the workings. I did like your 'Beer Talk' session. Perhaps you could make them a regular monthly session.
thank you, this episode had me smiling from start to finish. Reminds me of a similar experience I had aboard the "James Graig". A salvaged and restored old sailing goods transporter. Captained and sailed by volunteers of the Sydney Maritime Museum (Sydney Australia). We sailed down the harbour and out to sea and back again. A full day of exhilarating enjoyment. Love the old sailing vessels.
WOW !! What an amazing video, story, and lucky experience. So well told and explained. Perfect music and lovely Dutch people. Congratulations to you, and them.
Love this! I’m a resident in this ancient city which, aside from the Kogge, is filled with many more historic gems and stories. You certainly did a fine job in capturing this medieaval Kamper gem👌🏻😁
Wow one of the best episodes! You guys took us really back to another time with all the information. Also nice to listen to your own reflections! Much love from the Netherlands, Menno.
Congratulations Aladino and Maja I'm allways astonished how you manage to reinvent your storys and discover a new and interresting start. After 6 month of Vindö in the Europ cannels you not just start with "hey we are sailing again" no you come with a totaly new idea and history. Great!! Sad that we don't meet this year as I was with my vindö in the north sea too, but on the german "ostfrisische islands" maybe next year .... Thumbs up LG Niko
Well you guys never cease to surprise me, I am from Holland, came to South Africa in 1956 when I was 13 years old and I have never heard of Kempan. Never heard of it before!
You two sitting there discussing that old sailing ship being Magic Carpet 2.0 for me brought to mind Kahlil Gibran’s poem on Reason and Passion. What a perfect combination you guys seem to be for life partners. Great episode, great music, great information. Thanks.
Again compliments for this episode. Not quite what I expected, but making your series more interesting. Your video skill keep getting better and better. And Kampen is indeed a beautiful small city.
I’m about all the history that you add in! I like that it’s not all just about me me me and I feel like I’m watching a travel show instead of a self centered vlog! This is the future of travel vlogging!
Although I never been a sailor , can feel sick on a rowing boat, I very much enjoyed this vid on the Kogge & I can see the total joy of your experience . In England another seafaring Nation we have a number of old traditional sailing vessels , if you have not seen them before look up the history on the old Thames Barges & the East Anglian Wherries, think you should enjoy. Keep them coming . Cheers Eric UK
I think your videos are amazing! I stumbled across your RUclips Channel oh maybe a month ago and proceeded to binge-watch the entire thing, from the beginning. The only bummer now is that I'm all caught up and WAITING for the next episodes... A week is a REALLY long time! LoL. Much love from Phoenix, Arizona.
Wow, again, a fantastic episode. I am reminded of a memory from the distant past, that des goélettes, of the St. Lawrence are descended from cogs (kogges). It may well be that the French settlers of the St. Lawrence region of Quebec, brought the memory of these small, seaworthy little cargo ships with them. I remember them well (the motorised ones at least) from my time in Baie Comeau in the mid-sixties. Good on this group for building and maintaining this little ship!
Really enjoyed that, absolutely fascinating. Have done a little crewing on old boats in days gone by and loved battling the elements but need my creature comforts, unlike back in those days!
Love how you make sailing and travelling video's that are so different from the rest. Others concentrate mainly on the sailing and repairs of their own boat. Your boat is mainly a way of connecting to other people (with a boat) and exploring the area you happen to be in. Fantastisch! Bij de weg. Just adding some silly beer related talk. 😉If you had come down the Maas / Meuse into the Netherlands you would have been able to visit the Hertog Jan brewery just a few hundred meters from the Maas. Tip for anyone going that way.
Aladino's gears were really turning in his head, trying to figure out how to convince you to sail the world on a Kogge, and how the hell he would build one. I have a feeling he's going to be thinking about that boat for a long time.
As you have a Swedish sailing boat, I assume/hope you will be crossing over to Sweden and if/when you do, I hope you sail to Gothenburg via the beautiful coast of Bohuslän and visit the archipelago with traffic-free islands here, see the traces of ship wharfs throughout the centuries and also visit the ship Götheborg. It’s the biggest wooden replica in the world and was sailed to China and back to Gothenburg to commemorate that trading route. I was a deck hand on her for two weeks myself when we sailed from Dover to Great Yarmouth and from there crossed the North Sea back to Gothenburg. Would be great to have you two over to my home town and welcome you/show you around. Congratulations on the new intro, it is very well made! Loving your channel. Fair winds and looking forward to the next video!
Thank you so very much! I'm blown away from this Episode! I didn't know, that there is in Kampen a Replica of an old Hanse Kogge. I'm planning to go there one time after the end of Corona. But also I'm very pleased, that I'm not a sailor in the Middle Age! Sitting on an open ship, getting wet an cold all the time without any Chance to warm up for a few minutes was definitiv a Job for Heros! Sorry for my english writing! It's not my mother tongue!
Awesome vid! My mind was reminded of the name Kogge which I came across like 50 years ago in Germany as a kid. Great reminder where the name comes from. I sense some barrels of rum and fortunes of gold yonder.
I can't imagine how lovely sail handling was with no deck. And buckets for bilge pumps as the rain cascaded down and the waves no doubt rolled in to some extent during heavy weather. All this in the North Sea too. Many lost to cargo shifting in stormy seas no doubt. 70 degrees to windward was a surprising fact. No doubt quite the pleasant ride there eh?
Nice you showed Kampen, i live next to it. Super nice place to visit At the harbour ZC 37 there are koge wrecks under water at the entrance. Sometimes with good clear water you can dive on those. Nice vlog .. perfect
when You look at sailing the Kogge back then in medieval times , You have to take into account that traveling over land would have been on horseback or horse driven carriages. Not very fast either and also pron to weather, so the only thing people could do was to have patience.Very nice video
Aye m8’s, nice one. Longship's from the Viking era are built in the same clinker technic. The moss used for caulking, Fontinalis antipyretica, is found in freshwater creeks or rivers, not on trees. As the name sugests it was also used in house constructing, for heat isolation between the chimney and walls of timber. At 18:59 the song is sung in Swedish , an old baltic song from Åland Islands. Caulking moss: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fontinalis_antipyretica
Hemp and pieces of clothes have been used to waterproof the gaps between the planking atleast since the viking age on klinker-built ships. Tar, also used on this medieval kogge was used both on ships and build ngs.
"Vem kan segla förutan vind vem kan ro utan åror vem kan skiljas från vännen sin utan att fälla tårar. Jag kan segla förutan vind jag kan ro utan åror men ej skiljas fr vännen min utan att fälla tårar!" One of the songtext in this episode. Thanks!
Beautiful narration, only Christian Williams comes close. Expressing, integrating such descriptive choice of words, you bring the viewer into your realm. Love to you both in this holiday season. Thank you for the knowledge and adventure you share. 😷👍
Interesting to see the planking. I didn't realize it was so old a technique. Here in Ontario it is (or was) called clinker plank and the folded nails were copper and called clinch or clincher nails This was used on Peterborough (the brand, not the town) boats at least into the '70s. No moss, just varnish. A little hemp here and there.
Very interesting video, excellently made! I bet Aladino's next sailboat will be a WOODEN one....... They are full of myth and charme, even the modern ones; besides, much drier at winter time to live aboard, and better insulated from the summer heat. (and for an expert like Aladino, easier to fix and maintain anywhere....) Thank you for making us partecipate to your interesting adventures
The smile on Aladino’s face says it all. The man is truly in his element. You guy’s are the best. Side note... We have RUclips premium so no ads. For now anyways. ;)
Back in my youth, I dated a girl from the Nederlands and traveled extensively across the country. I agree with your assessment of the Nederlanders; they are a welcoming lot. I did, however, miss Kamper and kogges all together. Thanks for filling in that gap in my knowledge.

Thank you so much for your hospitality, and for keeping history alive!
Thank you so much Gerrie for making this all possible for us!! This video would not have happened without you. It was such a joy to meet you!
Aladeno had the perfect shirt for sailing on this boat. Loved the music you chose.
Even the perfect hair too😄
@@wilfredzwart2154 Absolutely.

Perma-smile on Aladino's face! Such an adventure.
Yes, the joy is clear!
I was going to say could he even have a bigger smile?
My big take away is what incredible film makers you have become! I loved the expression of absolute delight on Dino's face as he took the tiller. This is one of the best episodes ever.
Absolutely brilliant episode guys. What a storyteller you are. Thank you

Same. Ive watched Umas and Carpets video back-to-back.
same here ! very interesting and great shanties!
Aladino looks like he jumped out of a Bruegal painting and onto the deck of Kamper Kogge.
Indeed he did🙂
Indeed he did🙂

A nice history lesson about the times when ships were made of wood and the men were made of steel.
They still are ;)
This is really unbeliveble. It is hard to imagine how the sailors live back this days, it is awsome. Thanks for this video and greetings from Zadar (Croatia) 😉
The Kamper kogge choir sing a swedish song "Vem kan segla förrutan vind". Beautiful.
Coming from Dutch descendents from the 1100's, it was so incredible to actually see what sailing at that time was really like. Can't wait to see more from the Netherlands!
Seeing you drop that huge sail on the ship gave me a big smile.
This raises your story telling and video recording to another level! It was so outstanding to see the vessel under sail and learn more about the construction. It was really great to see the closeup of the construction methods. THANKS for making this available to all of us. God Speed on future journey
What an amazing experience. I really love how you filmed this, and your narrative storytelling was truly wonderful.

Hahaha, in the song they sing about going to England to get Gin, on the way back they had a drunken captain below deck.
The best part of the video was Aladino's smile when he was sitting on the front of the ship! He looked so happy, and it's so lovely that you caught that on film! 🦋🌈💜

Interesting explanation to sail on such an old authentic design.
Cracy , the darkblue ship that showed up at 06 min 8sec l sold 3 years ago to a very nice guy here in germany . Nice to see her in a good shape and still floating . Thanks for that 👍

Fantastic footage! So nice to hear some positive things about my country, our history and the people. Just makes me proud! Thank you so much.
I like the way you closed the video out with the singers singing "Rolling Down to Old Maui". One of my favorites.🙂
Thank you both, looking forward to this series, with the memories it will bring back. Stay safe.

Awesome vid! My mind was reminded of the name Kogge which I came across like 50 years ago in Germany as a kid. Great reminder where the name comes from. I sense some barrels of rum and fortunes of gold yonder.
Awesome video, thank you for sharing this amazing boat and it's history........
Super nice place to visit
At the harbour ZC 37 there are koge wrecks under water at the entrance.
Sometimes with good clear water you can dive on those.
Nice vlog .. perfect
First class videography. First class storytelling. Aladino is so into the kogge! You really are some channel! Be safe, be happy, be prosperous!
wow!Thank you for that magnificent tour guys! from Québec!@
when You look at sailing the Kogge back then in medieval times , You have to take into account that traveling over land would have been on horseback or horse driven carriages.
Many thanks for the interesting details.
Hemp and pieces of clothes have been used to waterproof the gaps between the planking atleast since the viking age on klinker-built ships. Tar, also used on this medieval kogge was used both on ships and build ngs.
What an amazing boat, how lucky you were to sail on her, it all looked fascinating.
"Vem kan segla förutan vind vem kan ro utan åror vem kan skiljas från vännen sin utan att fälla tårar.
Jag kan segla förutan vind jag kan ro utan åror men ej skiljas fr vännen min utan att fälla tårar!"
One of the songtext in this episode.
Thanks!
What a surprise!! Medieval boat!! You are the best...good content!
great stuff, i like those old wooden boat
Beautiful narration, only Christian Williams comes close. Expressing, integrating such descriptive choice of words, you bring the viewer into your realm. Love to you both in this holiday season. Thank you for the knowledge and adventure you share. 😷👍
You just can't hide the excitement and joy written all over Aladino's face in this episode 😁
Cool episode, and Maya, you're a fantastic storyteller
Loved this video. Of course, as a Dutchie, i have an advantage.
Wow-what a great inside into Kamper and it dutch sailing history
What an adventure. Great video.
Thank you both..😊
Excellent video 👍👏👏👏
This u-tube video was great. I like it when you have audio 👂👂
Very interesting video, excellently made! I bet Aladino's next sailboat will be a WOODEN one....... They are full of myth and charme, even the modern ones; besides, much drier at winter time to live aboard, and better insulated from the summer heat. (and for an expert like Aladino, easier to fix and maintain anywhere....)
Thank you for making us partecipate to your interesting adventures
The smile on Aladino’s face says it all. The man is truly in his element. You guy’s are the best.
Side note... We have RUclips premium so no ads. For now anyways. ;)
Ah sweet, kampen, have been there many many times. Beautiful city, and beautiful history
Hey Maya, ever since you arrived in Holland you look more and more Dutch :).
Aladino with the shirt he is wearing and his long wild hair, he looks like he could be one of the original members of the ships company as he steers.
Geweldig! I loved your serie about France ( my country of birth) and i look forward to the serie about the Netherlands ( where i live).
Back in my youth, I dated a girl from the Nederlands and traveled extensively across the country. I agree with your assessment of the Nederlanders; they are a welcoming lot. I did, however, miss Kamper and kogges all together. Thanks for filling in that gap in my knowledge.
Great video. Narration is excellent
Aladino looked so happy on that ship! 🖤🏴☠️ “all hands on deck” I bet he was dying to say that. You guys are lucky 💙💚👌
Wonderful story...thank you for sharing...
Such an incredibly built ship! Time to Square rig Magic carpet :P
