agree... that was the time when Emerson had problems with his right arm, came out on Keyboard magazine "will Emerson ever play again?", he had an operation on his tendons. He'd been holding to the pain for a long time, you can see him trying to sooth his hand before the start of Tarkus on the Royal Albert Hall video.
According to that Keyboard magazine article, the reason was Emerson's bad keyboard technique. You can see him overly tense when he plays the piano improvs on the California Jam. No wonder years of tension caused his arm ailment. He puts too much force on the keys.
Every time I see one of these ELP live performances is like a musical and spiritual reawakening!

I was wondering why they were so bad at that time. ELP had their critics but at one stage they were a lot more fluid in their playing.
