- Emerson, Lake & Palmer perform "Hoedown" live in 1973. This footage is from a 1973 documentary on the band during the making of "Brain Salad Surgery" and the tour that followed.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer, also known as ELP, are a sporadically active English progressive rock supergroup. They found success in the 1970s and have sold over forty million albums and headlined large stadium concerts. The band consists of Keith Emerson (keyboards), Greg Lake (bass guitar, vocals, guitar) and Carl Palmer (drums, percussion). They are one of the most popular and commercially successful progressive rock bands.

The phrase 'he's got more talent in his right hand than I do in my whole body' probably exists because of Keith Emerson
His left hand is the third or fourth greatest keyboard player in rock history all by itself.
@@joeday4293 Yeah, Rick Wakeman had the best right hand of the time.
Keith*
Him and Greg…..
Unbelievable, but what most people forget is that the other two kept up with him
Emerson has one hand flying in one direction and the other playing bass rhythm and is chewing gum like he's on a Sunday walk around the park,
Palmer looks like he's riding a bull in a rodeo, holding on for dear life and Greg is just Greg, always smiling. I miss these guys.
Keith was also hammered drunk.
Extraordinary talent.
Chewing gum helps to keep from grinding your teeth when you do that really pure yayo😂
WOW WHAT A FANTASTIC TIME, BLOODY BREATHTAKING 👏 BAND. ONLY PROBLEM, YOU COULD NOT TICKETS. THATS HOW BIG THEY WERE. 😮😅😊. UNBELIEVABLE TALENT 👏
Had a poster of Keith Emerson, from this concert, on my bedroom wall! This is MUSIC not the trash they turn out these days!
I graduated Jr.high school in 1973 and had their album. Listened to it every day. Where did the time go? 50 years like just ....gone.
very similar here. Graduated high school in 1973. Strange, life goes by so fast.
@@philipcucinella5876 id in France🙂
All 3 of them...pure talent of the highest level!!!
More talent than all the grammy winners in the last 25 years combined!
there will never be another band like ELP!that mould has been broken
RIP Keith Emerson and Greg Lake.
You influenced my musical tastes and you shared the best music we could imagine.
Goodbye my friends.
They surely did!
AMEN
I saw ELP 4 times. The last time was the August Jam.
Im 69. Favorite Band.
saw them 3 times trilogy, BSS, Works with orchestra . those were the days
Bands most often play more slowly live. Then there's ELP playing this absolutely turbo-driven track EVEN FASTER than the studio version!
Au Contraire, M.
The adrenaline of the moment led live acts to play, as I like to call it, "Wilson Pickett fast"!
No, most bands play faster. Been watching it happen since the late 60s.
Live, this was phenomenally loud!
Hats off to Carl Palmers drumming that can't be easy.
damn, rest in peace keith emerson. one of the only bands that new how to turn a classical copland song into pure rock n' roll.
Best keyboard player ever.
Without a doubt Keith was the best keyboardist in pop history. Carl it's greatest drummer. Gregg the greatest voice of prog rock. A helluva band was ELP.
Oh yes
Rick Wakeman enters the chat.
Keith Emerson is the only keyboard player ever admired by guitar players; he was THAT good.
For those of you who don't know, he took his own life in 2016 at age 71 when nerve damage in his wrist and hand due to focal dystonia reached a point that he couldn't play anymore- and he saw no reason to stick around.
Very sad, too bad it happened. He didn’t need to commit suicide
What can one say but "Wow!" Lost in Keith’s brilliance is the extraordinary drumming of Carl Palmer. His hand speed and timing are impeccable!
There will never ever ever be another Keith Emerson...
Milano Velodromo Vigorelli . aprile 1973 . Avevo 15 anni . Mio fratello 16 . Abbiamo sfondato. Non si usava pagare ai concerti . Un modo di essere ribelli . Memorabili. Fantastici . bellissimi ricordi ❤
This is one of the most powerful songs of rock history!! ELP will live forever!!!
I wish I can Irish jig to this fast. Enough.
Keith Emerson was on of the first super-shredders in rock music. A virtuoso.
I'm diggin that alien cyborg outfit that Keith had on. I really wish both he and Greg were still around
Keith showing off, and we mere mortals enjoying every instant of it. Only Carl and Greg could have kept up with such style. I always am amused at Greg's breath of relief at the end.
WeAreAllOne ExceptForThatGuy
This comment gave me butterflies. "Mere mortals" so true
This is the song that made me fall in love with Aaron Copeland . I had no clue who he even was before this
For the love of Caesar; I exceed my maximum heart rate just *watching* anyone move that fast! Pure genius. There are no suitable adjectives; though, suffice it to say Keith Emerson was phenomenal.
that hand, God, it was so fast. Keith was so brilliant. It' s so sad that he took his own life because he could no longer use that hand properly. That was in 1973 and they were so young, famous, rich and technically superior to any other band. Again, so sad. Ars longa, vita brevis, Keith. Life is short but art is immortal
ITA VERA!!!
All I hear is the Organ and the drums, Sounds awesome.
Power Trio of th 70's at his best 😍❤ RIP Greg and Keith 😭
Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends .... Greatest opening line ever RIP 2 of the masters.
The speed of Emerson's playing...absolutely unreal. They were life-affirmingly brilliant. What a band!
ELP were an exceptional band was lucky enough to see them in concert many times RIP KEITH
saw ELP at the Melody Maker concert at the oval cricket ground in September 1972. They opened with this - powerful performance. RIP Keith.
Emerson was a genius.
Yes. He really was. A stunning maestro. I love Rick and Tony both. But Keith was the virtuoso.
RIP man, one of my favorite keyboard artists from one of my fav bans from the 70s
Wow! That's the sound of sheer joy to so many of us. ELP will never be forgotten.
That's a very beautiful looking Fender Jazz Bass Greg Lake is playing. It has to be a CBS era model, judging from the neck.
There is no other bass player or guitarist like Greg Lake, and there never will be another musician like him ever again.
Let us not forget to highlight one of the most ethereal voices of all time! Even Leonard Berstein was impressed by him!
RIP Keith. you will be deeply missed my friend
There has and never will be a better keyboard player piano player than Keith Emerson
Keith was incredible , and he didn't even let his armadillo suit get in the way !
Amazing, just amazing!
ELP was I think the first group I got into. Someone tossed out a bunch of 45s, I found them, and one of them was Lucky Man/Knife's Edge. That left a lasting impression on my 11 year old mind.
I wonder how many even know that this is a classical piece from Rodeo by Aaron Copeland. Their love and appreciation for the classical music genre really shines through in every composition they recorded!
Esses caras eram de outro planeta! É emocionante ouvir isso, tamanha era a qualidade deles como músicos!
Carl Palmer is brilliantly hanging on for dear life with this 78 rpm version of Aaron Copeland's classic.
Keith lets it fly at hair-on-fire speed. Greg & Carl fly right along in support & never waver. A very high octane take!
Out of this world !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
saw them 1974 for the first time... I was 14... could not believe how much music came from 3 guys! fantastic
Greg lake un angelo caduto su questo pianeta, e Keith Emerson e Carl palmer pure, altro che le fetecchie che vengono adorate come artisti da troppi anni a questa parte.
I like how KE's back is to the other two, plunging headlong into this complicated piece just knowing the boys are there.
Hahah Keith's is crazy, he's playing it in double speed, poor Carl barely can breathe!
+Ivo Wilson Yeah, but how many other drummer could have kept up like Carl? Carl was perfection for ELP!
brilliant observation
remember, carl palmer kept that drumming pace up for 2 hours almost every night for.months at a time! not just one song one time.
the guy can probably crack a walnut with his thumb and forefinger
But he DID keep up. Amazing. Others can have their Keith Moon and Jon Bonham...I'll take Carl Palmer over ANY OTHER DRUMMER (except maybe Ringo...for sentimental reasons).
Guys, i enjoyed all the posts here. Why do you think they are not in the rock hall of fame?
I hadn't really thought about it until Carl Palmer mention it in a recent interview; whilst there are many advanced guitar players today, there aren't as many advanced keyboard players. The opposite was true in the early 70's which is why ELP was a trio. But even back then, there were very few keyboard players with Keith's virtuoso talent.
a magnum of champagne to keep the music following, terrific, elp forever
Now that's the Emerson Lake and Palmer that I'm talking about. Musicians musicians. I saw this exact show St Louis 1974.
I`m 52 now. Back in time when I was listening to ELP I did not even realize they are the biggest geniuses of Rock Music. Is that a bottle of champaign on Keith`s keyboards?
That's a bottle of cognac that was his signature drink. In the early days he always had that bottle of cognac with him on his organ.
DAMN ! I got winded just watching them perform this !
MUITO BACANA O QUE VOCES FAZEM, SOU Remanescente DOS ANOS "70" PELO AMOR DE "DEUS" NÃO DEIXEMOS O ROCK MORRER !!!
50 years ago now. Wow!
RIP Keith and Greg
Three titans at work.......
I like to watch the migration of this song from73 to 97. It's a tour de force for a quarter century even when the time signature evolves. Amazing
73 would be about the 1st time i saw them in concert. when they they started playing this tune everybody looked around at each other like OK>>>but it rocked.
I Play this piece every day on my organ, but must admit that the speed and definition that Keith had with his right hand is really hard to achieve, reserved to very few people...a superclass.
"Immortal" is the only word that comes to mind...
If your day is done and you want to ride on...
Just sheer brilliance.
Fantastic! Keith gets so much expression out of that Hammond, it's unbelievable. We guitar players can vary our fretting and picking styles to alter our instrument's "speaking voice", but I'm constantly amazed by keyboard players like Mr. Emerson who can do that by simply pressing down a key that does nothing more than close an electrical contact. How the hell do you get expression out of that!?!? Btw, did anyone notice that wall of Leslies behind him. Maybe that has something to do with it, but I think we all know, in reality, that it's all in the fingers (and the heart), don't we...?
After another scintillating performance by virtuoso guitar legend Chet Atkins a fan walked up to him and said: "Chet, your guitar sounded fantastic tonight." Chet pointed to his guitar which was resting against a wall and replied: "How does it sound now?"
Bottom line: It's not the instrument, it's the person PLAYING the instrument that breathes life into it!!
PS--As incredible as Keith Emerson is in this clip---Carl Palmer is just as incredible!! (Probably the only drummer in the world who could match Keith's blazing chops!!) And Greg Lake's pulsating bass lines add to the dynamics!! One of the most talented groups ever assembled at the peak of their powers!!
nyterpfan that same thing was said about Jascha Heifetz...and about 30 other people. I get the sentiment but it's urban legend.
I think Keith ran his Hammond through a PA system. The sound here is more of a PA rather than Leslie. As to sounds from a Hammond, don't forget the great Jon Lord. No one, and I mean no one, could get a Hammond to sound like the way his did. And talk about a great improviser, Jon was a great improviser. ELP, what a great band.
@@ScienceTalkwithJimMassa By the amount of pressure applied to the keys when hitting the notes.
@@ScienceTalkwithJimMassa The Hammonds were by this time indeed going to multiple Leslie cabinets whose internal amps had been removed, drivers replaced, and powered by Hiwatt guitar heads. One or more Leslies would probably have been miced for the PA but the principal Hammond sound would have been coming out of the Hiwatt/Hammond combination.
Geniales 😚Vivirán por siempre 😘Qué afortunados los que estaban allí. ..Música. ..creación. ..talento!!!!💞✌💞💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎
And how does Carl Palmer rarely make best drummer lists???? Criminal
Fantastic!
After 49 years all i can say is......WOW!!!!
ELP: the Tyrannosaurus Rex of 70s progressive rock bands!
There were 3 albums back then you brought cassettes of with you when buying a home or car stereo:
1)Brain Salad Surgery
2)Made In Japan
3)Cream Live Vol. 2
If the system and especially the speakers could handle the volume cranked UP without excessive distortion or getting blown out...then you bought it. I still have my killer system from back then. I've gotten complaints to the police from many blocks away. I'm quite proud of that, actually.
Absolutely f\+king incredible.
Não fui um grande apreciador de rock sinfônico mas a qualidade dos três e impressionante
I love these guys! How tragic to lose Keith the way we did . . . I still can't believe it. If I had only one "star" to meet in any category, it would have been Keith Emerson; if I got to meet two "stars", Greg Lake and Carl Palmer would have tied. See you on the other side, Keith and Greg . . . = . (
thats loud and clear great performance
Keith: "How's it going Carl?"
Carl: "Fuck off: I'm all over it, bitch. Let's play."
Greg: "I'll just be over here if you need anything boys."
He was magical back when I saw him and the band in 1975 second roe seats with a beautiful woman with me who had a beautiful soul she has passed away but I will never forget her Carla Joyce Tufts 🩷🩷🩷✝️
Just amazing, sorry we lost so many...
Greg is just plucking away while Carl and Keith go nuts!
There will never be another ELP.
I was there!!!!
I'm a retired guitar player, but Keith Emerson was my favorite and musical idol. Then Justin Hayward and Thijs Van Lear (Focus).
Thanks for mentioning Van Lear. He is criminally underrated. Actually he is my second favorite keyboardist after Emerson. I think he's better than Wakeman, Lord, and Banks. So good to see his name.
I can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. Emerson can rip this complex song on multiple keyboards at the same time. He’s not human.
just BRUTAL!
Emerson is a Keyboard Legend
Whoa, slow down, fellas! That was an insane tempo!
That right-hand melody has some repeated 16th notes; I'd love to see some MIDI data off that keyboard to see if he's actually nailing those.
That is just plain badass
Super BAND para todos tiempos!!!
Love ELP
This rolls so hard.
God I miss the boys! best band ever
Seeing them tonite in Akron....stoked!
That's Quite a feat two of them are deceased.
Listening to this on x2 speed is quite the ride
THERE WILL NEVER BE ANYONE 2 MATCH ELP
Thanks Danny
My Heroes,r.i.p Keith And Greg,we Will see in next Life/dimension brothers
Long live ELP 🎹🎸🎤
Out of this world !
Shredding it!!
Intensity on Palmer's face at 1:46 is fantastic.
