I am a beginner at sewing but aren't you supposed to backstitch at the beginning of each side sewn? Wont it come undone?

Hi Gaga4 Goats,
You may backstitch, but it is not that necessary as in other patters. Later you will secure these ends twice anyway. Thank you for the good question.

I'm not sure what you mean by heavy. Cotton fabrics are different. The mask is very light.
