I tried using Harpoons in a multiplayer mission once but couldn't figure out how. Now couple of years later I'm a bit hyped for Sea Power and decided that i wanna do some carrier warfare in DCS, so naturally I need to learn how to use the darned things. And thanks to you, I now know how! Neat!
In our group, we tend to run a 2 or 3 F-18 strike with 2 or 3 sorties of 12 TALD'S to drain the enemies SA missiles, then run in with 4 Harpoon's. Seems to work fairly well most of the time.
Don't forget that the Harpoon is also capable of A2A engagements (especially against alien space ships) as depicted in the documentary "Independence Day" by renown German filmmaker Roland Emmerich.

Thanks for the refresher! Its so weird that not all weapons use the same button press scheme for fuctions like locking. But I guess different contractors, different software & methods. You need to hit the slava class with at least x7 harpoons (usually more) to knock it out in dcs, or x24 gbu 38’s set to pen mode. It’s really silly imo. I doubt it will change but I really wish they’d make weapons a bit more effective vs ships when they hit.
I have never seen a Harpoon hit a warship yet by a single jet. If they don't get shot down by SAMs, then the CIWS always intercepts them. So to score a hit, I send a 4 ship attack group. Two, including me, have Harpoons and the other two have TALDS. Like you said earlier, the goal is to saturate the airspace. It can be tricky to get the timing right tho. You need the TALDs out in front and drawing the bulk of the fire, but not too far that they take out the decoys and then just take out your missiles. But when you get it right it's a thing of beauty. And the AI that launches the decoys is flakey at best. In a multiplayer server with all humans it would be much easier.

But when I was a part of it back in the early 90's it was actually called the VA 34 Blueblasters and our aircraft was the A-6 Intruder before it was eventually decomissioned. I'm not sure when it became a VFA squadron.
Hi Tricker. Can you please help me or anyone here? At 2:05 the 25s alignment ends and the HPD symbol uncross. In my Hornet after 25s of HPD alignment the symbol is still a cross and won't let me fire the harpoon. I'll just add that I have Master arm and A/G ON. I've seen a lot of Harpoon tutorial videos and I still don't know where I'm going wrong. Does anyone know please?😔
This is a great mission! Any reason why I am struggling to detect the ships with the SEA Radar? I can fly straight at the target, be well within 80mile range and it just doesnt detect anything? Anyone have an advice?
The best anti ship platform is the Viggen, however in SP the Harpoon just doesnt work in DCS against ships like the Moskva. In MP with several aircraft you can launch 4 HARM each and overwhelm the defences.....but you need quite a few Hornets (I think 8 from memory but I might be wrong). In SP, Maverick F or L (carried by the Harrier and Hornet) fired from 3-5 miles are more effective as they can be fired from under 30 ft so you are immune to SAMs - but not CIWS. (or the sea). The Harrier can also carry a pair of sidearm which are effective as a decoy for the CIWS so 2 sorties is enough to sink a Moskva. The Hornet might need 3 as CIWS is more likely to shoot the Mavs down. Hopefully ED will reduce the god like ability of ships to detect and shoot down Harpoon....and a single Harpoon hit should have a good chance of crippling a ship. However with the command and conquer damage model we have....
@@SportDCS it's a good shout one a4 completely disabled the wnirire weapons systems on a destroyer with 20mm cannon fire. DCS ...a superb cockpit sim, a great flight sim, but its not a realistic combat sim

This is a single player mission I made but I know some multiplayer servers have a limit on how far you can see units to help save performance on your end and then render them in closer to the target you get.
I tried the same scenario and had the same result. I also tried coming in at 50 ft and mach 1, throwing 5x 2000lb bombs onto the ship and it took only a few % damage. You'd think a 2000 pound projectile hitting something at 1115 feet per second would do something, nevermind one with a bunch of explosive fill, but, meh. I blame the damage model. Also I discovered that the DCS world is flat. The cruiser didn't start firing till I was within something like 10 miles.

@@TrickerDCS Ironically best way to kill a ship with a F-18 is to fly at 30 feet with a Zuni rocket loadout and if you hit with all of them you can kill a ship in 2 salvos.
@TrickerDCS For non-tutorials, I'd love to see some sorties on some of the pvpve servers. For a tutorial kind of thing, I'd love to see a "here's the things that are actually important to know how to use/bind in the cockpit, and how I do so" kind of video. Your guides are awesome no nonsense, here's how to get it done for the weapon systems, but I still need to watch a 2 hour Spudknocker video where he explains what every switch and button does to get to that point. I'd love a video in your style where you trim the fat and say "here's what you need to take off and kill shit, go forth and wreak havok"

The Moskva is a lot easier to find IRL now that it's stationary, but might still be hard to get a harpoon on it. :)

FYI, to bypass long range defenses of ships, fly below 30ft until 10-20 miles from the target. Pop up to 300-400ft and fire off your Harpoons.

You can see things to about 70-80 miles now....but only lock at about 45.....and about 6-12 months.
