Photography Lighting Tips, High Speed Sync with Pocketwizard Plus III's!

- In this video, I share with you a very cool and little-known feature with the Pocketwizard Plus III. I've been using Pocketwizards for ages and have replaced most of my older units with Plus III's. They're incredibly robust with all of the solid build quality and reliability you expect from Pocketwizard.

I discovered a special feature that allows you to do high speed sync and in this video I show you how I sync my strobes at 1/1600 sec. Normally, the Plus III would max out at 1/500 sec. 1/500 is a pretty nice sync speed, but some times, when you want to shoot wide open apertures and crush ambient light you need a faster shutter speed.
I set up a quick photoshoot to demonstrate the difference in exposure by adding a flash at 1/1600 sec! I'm shooting with a medium format camera and leaf shutter lens that can sync up to 1/1600 with flash, so naturally I want to shoot at the maximum. Please note that you will be limited to your camera's maximum sync speed, and not all camera are capable of shooting high speed sync in this fashion. For example, a Nikon or Canon typically maxes out between 1/200 - 1/250 sec.
I also show you how to configure the Pocketwizards for high speed sync and take you thru the configuration step by step.

It's a great tip for medium-format users with leaf shutter lenses. It makes receiving signal faster allowing to use your max sync speed of 1/1600 without loss of flash power. Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with HSS.
Pocketwizard was calling it high speed sync at the time even though it's not really HSS
4:25 on how to setup the high speed sync. you're welcome
I am trying to get a second camera to sync with the trigger camera. I am going to give this a try. The higher channel numbers are an interesting observation. I was using 20 anyway, but thank you.
You are a genius you just save me a lots of money. Now I got some question for you can you dial power up and down when you using the Einstein? Or you have to be always in full power? Do you think this will work with a Hasselblad X1d ?
Hi ADam I followed your advise to set HSS on my pocket wizard pluslll. Unfortunately I am still getting the black belt at the bottom of the pic. Please advise. Thanks
Hi! This will only work with a camera that has a leaf shutter like an Fuji X100, Leica Q, Hasselblad X1D etc. If you are trying this with your DSLR it wont work.
@@AdamLernerPhoto Thank you so much for your reply and clarification.
This video was super helpful. I trust this will work with Hasselblads as well.
Yes.
But.... with the leaf shutter, you don't have the same issues with high shutter as you would in focal plane shutter, right?
I've never owned a camera with a leaf shutter system but I suspect the issue would be the same but would manifest itself differently. Whereas the plane shutter, at high speed and not utilizing the PW high speed sync option, creates a vertical "line" of the scene where the sliver of shutter is open, I think the leaf shutter would cause vignetting around the edges of the frame. I'm certainly no expert but just my thoughts since your question is like the second one down :) Please let me know if I'm completely incorrect... always like to learn.
PW just got back to me. They said that HSR allows for a higher continuous drive mode rather than allowing the shutter speed to go through the roof. Maybe I will have to look another solution...
You should try or use the ATG AK1 Un-Tethered System for C/H/L/PO/N/S/P/S.
It can shoot better than pocket wizard.
* ATG wireless radio TTL
* ATG auto radio zoom
* ATG AF assist beam
* ATG radio 1st, 2nd and HSS
* ATG dual live-views
* ATG wireless RAW/JPEG up to 24fps to computer
ATG Gold MG8k Flash Kim X3 is a complete kit for ATG wireless radio for C/N/S.
ATG Gold A1 Flash Kim X will would on many cameras. Has ATG radio 24-200 zoom.
pocketwizard/quantum can not do all those above.
I got to get my hands on a digital medium format!
Using the Cactus V5 witch can sync up to 1/1000 and my D70S witch can sync at any speed :D
Great results combined with SB800 and Sigma 50mm EX
+Morgan Bergqvist Sounds like a great setup, thanks for sharing.
Wow thanks for this awesome video now I’ve got an easy way to do high speed sync. Now will this also work with the Nikon sb-910 or sb-800 speedlights thanks
You can do HSS with those speedlites.
2 thumbs up!! thanks Adam
Thank you!
Awesome, thank you!!
I have a Canon 5D Mk III and I followed the info in this video, and guess what, it did not work
Does this work on sony?
Not on Sony that use focal plane shutters. Only on cameras with a leaf shutter.
what is the flash soft box thing you are using?
+Joshua Beaven Thats a beauty dish.
+Adam Lerner what's the brand? and do u know any lighting setups for flash guns not studio battery powered flash. I'm finding it soooo hard to find I good product for a simple flash gun!? I have a canon 600ex :)
I thought you were using those Cactus triggers.
+vnitto I use the Cactus triggers with the Cactus flashes, and Pocketwizards with strobes.
Thank you youre a Boss
Thank you!
:)
this doesn't work with canon ? :/
Skip to 4:50
Can we do hss on X - thanks
I don't think so, thanks.
Mine still isn't working😢
You may need to update firmware, but be careful before you do. It's a paid upgrade and may also require updating other devices.
This does not work. Using Nikon D800 and SB910. I still got black band when shooting above 1/250th.
+SirSilverFox Correct. To get higher than 1/250 you'd need a leaf shutter lens or camera with a focal plane shutter.
+Adam Lerner I use the D800's focal plane shutter for up to 1/8000 shutter speed with the flash on camera, intake it this all changes when you go off camera?! Just seen the the newer flex and mini do HSS so maybe that may be my next best option...
SirSilverFox That may be. I found the original flex and mini to be unreliable, but that was some time ago.
Yep, I wasted hours to get this to work with D800, sb910 and pocketwizards plus III, NO WAY...before I read your comments here!
So just playing around. You found other things.
