I've been looking all over the place for information on these and this is the first, thorough explanation I have found. Thank you.

Are the flashes set to M or ETTL? Thx

The flashes are in TTL mode. The TT5 has no control over the flash in manual mode, so the power setting for the flash in manual mode must be done on the flash itself. Consequently, the AC3 won't be able to change the flash power while it is in manual mode.

Just to clarify please: so, when using the AC3 with the TT5, regardless of whether I want to have my flash work in TTL or manual, I set my flash to TTL? Again, if I want to use manual mode when using the AC3, I still have the flash set to TTL, NOT manual? This seems very strange - how can the flash work in manual mode work while set in TTL? Thank you! (P.S. The video is nice, but it would have been much better if Mike Wallace would have talked about specifically about how and why you set your camera in TTL (if I have understood this correctly.)

Yes, the flash is ALWAYS TTL. You can try this yourself by setting the flash to TTL and the AC3 to A and shooting an object at both -3 and +3 on the AC3. Then set the AC3 and the flash to M at full power at both -3 and + 3. In my case, the AC3 at A and -3 got a slightly brighter image than AC3 at M and -3 with flash at TTL, but with AC3 at M and +3, the flash emitted the same light no matter if it was in M or TTL.
