- At an event Technics hosted at parent company Panasonic's Newark, New Jersey headquarters September 17th, Technics Business Development Manager Bill Voss walked me through all of the new $3299 SL-1300G turntable's features and mechanical and physical attributes, comparing it to the $2199 SL-1200GR2 below and the $4299 SL-1200G above.
This video should clear up any and all confusion about what stepping up from the 1200GR2 gets you and what stepping down from the 1200G gets you and doesn't get you.
The new 'table incorporates many features found on the more costly 'table including the 1200G's copper-topped triple layer 7+ pound platter, combined with the 1200GR2's iron-coreless type double rotor/single stator motor and ΔΣ Drive that the more costly 1200G lacks. While the SL-1300G's 30 pound plinth is not identical to the SL-1200G's, it is upgraded in key ways compared to the 1200GR's.
The video includes illustrations explaining some of what can't be seen on the outside and an illustrated Technics historical timeline. Lots to look at and consider.
Also in this video is a considered look at the new Technics SC-CX700 Wireless Speaker System, which incorporates some interesting new tech and is far more than a typical "powered loudspeaker".
Following the presentation I got to hear both the SL-1300G and the SC-CX700 loudspeaker. Despite the less than optimal room conditions, the bottom end produced by both the 1300G through a pair of floor standing Technics SPG90 Mk2 loudspeakers and the 1200G directly into the powered speakers, which includes a built-in MM phono preamp.
It was an impressive and useful presentation, especially when, at the conclusion I asked whether it might be possible for me to get all three turntables to compare. That's what readers have asked for and that's what I hope to get. Yes, as Voss pointed out, that would be a major undertaking, but it's one I'm willing to do!

Technics really stepping into the Audiophile side of Turntables the last few years. I’m all for it.
Technics really seem to listen to its customers! This is what I wanted for a long time. And the silver / brass version is so beautiful.
I love your videos Mr. Farmer! IMHO, Technics had to renew themselves after they left japan for Malaysia and the customers started to turn up their noses and claim that Malaysian products are not the same as Japanese products and that's exactly why they invented the Delta Sigma Drive. The technology is excellent - but not necessary...
the old turntables made in Japan were just perfect and the latest models that was made in Japan were equally amazing... but still even if the factory in Malaysia is Panasonic are just amazing brand.
They make it here but don't bloody sell it here 😢
Absolutely fantastic! Those guy's are on the ball , best of all worlds!😊
I have the 1210GAE. I love that the strobe light shuts off after a few seconds and have yet to use the pitch adjustment.
This table looks like a great compromise.
😂 “I’m always a fan of digital in the service of analog. That’s a really good thing” - Michael Fremer 2024 😂
Michael, it’d be great to see you compare those 3 turntables. People would love to see that.
Looking forward for the upgraded 1200G without the DJ look.
Great Video. This guy is Mr Technics and I'm sure you are impressed Michael. For the audiophile on a real world budget ...like me I enjoy some original SL1200mk2s and Sp10 mk2 and an SL120 with SME 30009 and a little SL7. The new models are great. Only I wish they kept the orange cue light. Reasonably priced considering the rising costs of everything today.
This is good news, although I would have preferred a sort of SL1200G, without variable pitch, strobe light, etc., in short, without DJ elements, with the technology developed recently. In other words, an improved 1200G, for audiophiles.
We look forward to your review Mike!
The 1300G is very nice. I wish they could have sold it for under $3,000, though.
When I was a teenager you could buy a brand new Volkswagen Bug off the Showroom Floor for $1995.00 😱😂✌️
Nice table. A long way from my SL1100A table- with FR64S tonearm and Nagoaka MP 11B cartridge.
I really looked forward to this video. Thanks! Please review it in an upcoming episode.
I’m still trying to get my head around paying $4-5k for a Technics turntable.
In the 70’s they were just about giving them away. 🤓
They are the same in name only....
@@trackingangle929 Ya there’s lots of talk these days on Cogging and precise speed control etc. Some say the difference is remarkable, always been a belt drive guy myself. Love my Oracle. Hope to see you review them Michel. 🙏
@@trackingangle929 One hundred percent.
Looking forward to the review
Awesome Video Michael 😊
They skip the 1200MK2 on their history board..on the monitor..Iam wondering why????Was it realy TOO DAMM GOOD????
Looks nice, but What I want is a 1200g2 without the dj stuff, 18 kg. with the premium arm.
Great video as always! But when I see people place a turntable in-between speakers that are sitting on the same surface immediately next to it, I have to shake my head! At such a close proximity to the source of the sound that the turntable and speakers are both playing, even if the speakers don't transfer any cabinet vibration to the turntable to cause obvious feedback and tracking problems, there will most certainly be a smearing of coherence and fine details that's introduced by the airborne sound pressure as it hits the tonearm and platter. I have heard this smearing effect first hand which ultimately led to my placing my turntable outside of the listening room.
Excellent review & Technics advance.
Soo if one is looking for SL-1200G without the DJ effects would that be a 1400G? Also what DJ is spending $2-4k on a turntable when the MK7 exists?
Take the rubber off and slap some acrylic on it... unless you like static.
I was thinking about getting the TT with a Hana cartridge.
It is ia nice turntable and glad to see the DJ stuff eliminated and a more subdued styling. Would not have minded if they kept the strobe and platter markings.
Not for nothing. The 400k players are starting to bore me. This is true engineering mastery. Much more impressive.
Great video
Thank you 🙏🏾
What no demo of sound, as much as I wasn’t expecting much I watched to the end thinking there was eventually a sound demo coming. I guess it was pretty bad. 🤔
It was very good actually but how was I supposed to direct-record it there? No way. When I get hopefully all three home I will make recordings for you to hear.
That would be great, they all sure look nice, it seems there’s nothing out there of any quality under $5,000. 👍
@@1999zrx1100 I wonder if Mike would consider making recommendations of good values on the second hand market?
@@1999zrx1100the new table/arm itself is ~$3,300 afaik..
Funny. Bill from Technics was at a loss when he was asked to describe the differences in sound between the 1200G and 1300G, even though he had heard both in comparison. He just said that each SL-Technics had its own sound. That's a bit embarrassing.
Too bad Technics did not add new colors in the redesign, would of loved to see one in Brushed Champange or Gloss black w/ anodized brass tonearm.
The black rubber platter mat just ruins the aesthetics. Surely they could have made a rubber transparent platter. Would have looked much nicer.
Now, how confusing that I own the 1978 SL-1300 - why have two models with the same designation?
This one is 1300G
What are it's weak points? is it the arm?
Can you put a better tonearm on this?
It’s a very nice arm. You probably could replace it…
It would be nice if you could purchase this sans arm and add the arm of your choice.Looks great without all the unnecessary DJ stuff cluttering things up.Very nice.
Is money growing on trees according to Technics ?
Why can't they sell this without a tonearm like they did in the good old days.
Time for another crop of audiophile gear!
Nobody harvests quality analogue sound like Mr Farmer!
_nobody_
the 1300 is junk, I ordered one and returned it, got the GR and I'l never need another turntable
So a pre pre pre production or what. It dosn't drop until december? And you replaced it with a 1200GR not a GR2?🤣
@@clausolsen856 whoops sorry I was thinking f the 1500c, I hate when people make dumb comments without watching the video and I just did that myself, my bad
@@rufus_the_cat well you don't go through life without faults...but it takes guts to own it....working on the later myself...and I'm with you on the 1500 contra the 1210GR....different leauge all together 👍
They all look the same to me 😂
