  • As I pedal through the altiplano, the challenge and thrill of cycling across the world's largest salt flat await me in Jirira, a town on the northern edge of the Salar de Uyuni.
Spanning over 10,000 square kilometers, the Uyuni salt flat is a stunning natural wonder formed by the evaporation of prehistoric lakes, leaving behind a dazzling expanse of salt crystals.
But Salar de Uyuni isn't just about salt flats; it's also home to otherworldly landscapes, such as the towering Tunupa Volcano and the rocky outcrop of Incahuasi Island dotted with giant cacti.
The region also boasts a rich cultural heritage, with indigenous Aymara and Quechua communities living in the surrounding hills.
The next day, I set off on my Surly Ogre bicycle, eagerly anticipating my adventure. Cycling across the Salar de Uyuni is for the strong-hearted, as the terrain is unpredictable and challenging. But I was determined to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
As I cycled across the vast salt flat, I was blown away by the sheer scale and beauty of the landscape. The salt crystals shimmered in the sun, creating a surreal and breathtaking atmosphere. I was humbled by the history and culture of the region.
This video documents my journey, from the exhilarating highs to the inevitable lows. In addition, it showcases the sheer magnificence of the Salar de Uyuni and the great Surly Ogre bicycle, which proved to be a reliable and sturdy companion throughout the trip.

So cool. Your dinner reminded me of one of one of Brian's camping adventures where they cross country skied all day. By the time they set up camp they were starving and sweaty wet but everything was frozen and they couldn't get their stove lit. They ate frozen Spaghetti inside their sleeping bags and said it was a most delicious meal 😋

Mid 70’s during the day, but the sun was relentless. At night it dropped into the 40”s.

With a bag full of electronics you are carrying you need one of two things...a dynamo hub...or a solar charger that you can put ontop of your bags..I got one...AU$160..And work fine.Powerbanks are not enough

I have the Schmidt Son hub with the Cinq Plus. Works like a charm, but I wanted to go out with everything full charged incase I needed to use all my juice for navigation.
