I'll definitely have to look into this one. I don't usually get into MMO's, simply because I don't have the time that I feel is needed to make some of those experiences worth while. But still, I'll give this a look. ;) Thanks for the recommendation and great video!
Man, good ol' Dreamcast. I feel like you could make a miniseries of "Trashed Classics" from games released on that system: Jet Set Radio, Carrier, Sword of Berserk, and even Shenmue. What an awesome system it was (glad I still have mine mothballed in a closet somewhere). What about the VMU? Please give it a thought - would love to see those titles resurrected
I still remember the first time I saw Phantasy Star Online, visiting the local gamer in the neighbourhood as a kid to borrow random games and he was playing it. Man it took several years before I got to try it on my own xbox haha. Ps, death to all the evil rappys...
I remember my friend showing me he could connect his dreamcast to the internet and use it to browse webpages. MIND BLOWN. He played Phantasy Star a bit but never really got into it. I got a dreamcast towards the end of its run and played the crap out of ShenMue
I'm a long time fan of PSO, and have played this one since release, but I just got back into the game after months of absence. I happened to run into this video, and could not agree more with everything you said. It's a wonderful game and sequel to one of the most memorable games of the past. I was even able to convince a friend to join me now that I've started playing again, could not get any better!
Avalanche, what is your favourite theme in PSO2? Some of the music here is utterly fantastic, like the soundtrack that plays during the Challenge Mile Quests and the Tokyo themes.
I love the Phantasy Star Online games! I played the original Xbox one and PSP title a bit. I still play the Dreamcast one with my BBA on a private server. GREAT games =) Cool video! I was very sad about the Vita one.
SegaCDUniverse Yeah!! I would love to take my character on the go. Plus the controls in PSO2 are well suited for a controller. Here's to hoping sega decides to do the smart thing
Awesome review man! I think I'm going to give this a try. I play the original online on my Dreamcast all the time and it's surprising how many people still play it. I'm sure the game would do great if it came to the US considering PSO fans are so dedicated that they wrote all new servers from scratch just to play the Dreamcast version online again! Make it happen SEGA!
***** There's no way they wouldn't make money off of it. I mean, people are ready and willing to go through this much just to play the Japanese ver. I bet all of the current US players would gladdly shell out 60 bucks for a full translation.
This game looks fantastic. I used to play PSO back in the day, I didn't have an internet connection then so I just played it alone. It was still fun and I still enjoy it to this day. I loved Phantasy Star Zero for the fact that you could play wirelessly with the DS.
It's a damned shame that Sega abandoned an official English release. I totally get that they have their motives for not doing so, but goddamn, it's such an amazing game, and I wish more people could experience it. The fan translation does a frankly incredible job of making the game playable for dumb westerners like myself, and since discovering it, the game has become one of my all-time favourites. Endless kudos and gratitude to the translators.
This looks good, I don't know why most Japanese companies just don't promote via RUclips if money is a big problem. Hell, even getting a few dozens reviewers to gush about a game maybe enough to get the ball of interest rolling.
Avalanche Reviews I find it strange that they have this perception that America isn't a big market for Japanese games. It probably doesn't help that they don't have a good opinion on the American/European side of consumer base.
fantastic work, glad i found your site and you already had a great back catolog to watch through :-) any chance you're planning on a patreon account? would love to be able to support you doing more vids
+justincase43 I would really like to, but I feel like I'm not at a point where I can justify having some people pay for my content. I will set one up one day, maybe when I feel like I can deliver something worthy of it. If you do want to help the show out, I have a store on redbubble where I sell video game / sprite art shirts ( www.redbubble.com/people/avalancheshirts ). I feel way more comfortable charging for something that actually cost money to create. Thanks for the kind words!!!
Sad sometimes publishers have a hard time telling what will bomb in the US and what wont. Personally I think this would do great in the US if they marketed it right and brought it to the right consoles. Man I want a real NA release so bad!
+ArtifiShuL Instinct I've heard that there is still a chance, so don't lose hope. They have an official enbglish patch, but they have blocked western IP addresses. Why they did this??? I'll never know, but at least it shows that they are working on it.
+ArtifiShuL Instinct It ran perfectly on an 8 year old dual core intel CPU @ 3.3ghz, and 3 gigs of ram. I think you'll be able to run it well on pretty much anything.
The PSO-Subseries of games has been my personal favorite hack-and-slash game right after Dark Cloud, and I've been pouring so much of my time into many of the games in the series. I personally think PSO2 is not of the original PSO, but rather rehashing PSU into what it should've been, and I think it worked quite well. While an english version would be nice to have and all, the main problem that would lie is how SEGA would handle their server - being behind in content is already a given (Though depending on what releases at launch it can go up to years behind) but I'll never forget their online trainwreck known as PSU. I think there will be too many standards to live up to if SoA wants to release the game anytime from now to later.
Jorendo Awesome! Glad you like it. It is still partially untranslated, but that kind of makes the experience a little cooler. Seeing Kanji all over the place makes me feel like I'm back in Japan.
Avalanche Reviews It sure does add to the experience. Feels more like you are in some Anime :) So far haven't run into anything i couldn't discover myself when it was in japanese. Most things are shown on pictures as well or you atleast reconize the keys of your gamepad :)
I played the original Phantasy Star quadrology .... in 2010, after playing the GBA Pokemon games..... And while I can see how it can be a very good game, having a gripping story, huge dungeons, solid and quite unique (but a bit too hard for me) battle system, I say it's quite dated, the next one I played was Phantasy Star Zero on the DS, which I enjoyed very much, and now I'm playing PSO2 in the SEA server, I have to say PSO2 is quite great, and I can't go back to the previous entries without missing the ability to jump... Now only if the translation didn't change things as they like.... I WANT MONOMATES!
This actually got me really interested in the earlier games too. My current computer definitely won't run PSO2, but I'm sure my original Xbox will play episodes I and II just fine. ;D So would you say all of the online games could still be enjoyed single player? EDIT: Well never mind about that. Apparently that version is completely unplayable. Maybe I'll get a Dreamcast one day.
If you're still playing with the recently released episode 4 and the anime tie in... I've recently jumped back onto ship 2 and a few friends are looking to join with the jpn release on PS4... would be more than happy to team up :) Love this game, so much so that I carry it around in my pocket at most times (Vita version) so we're pretty much free to play at most times. Ship 2 - Sk4zZi0uS
Calamity Jade I put a good 100 hours into a solo character about a year or two ago, and did just fine. I'm sure there's some real high level quests that might stack more towards big groups, but they have A.I partners you can bring into missions with you, if you want to take that route.
Avalanche Reviews I will check it out then! This game looks so different from other MMORPGs that it might be actually fun. And thank you again for bringing an overlooked game to my attention. Your Trashed Classics is one of my favorite series on RUclips. Especially Koudelka was a real treat.
Avalanche Reviews no way you checked me out! Man that makes me happy! Although I have a ton of work ahead of me thanks! I am always looking in ways I can improve! I'll take your channel and aspire to be as good as you
I'd recommend you change to Ship 02 in the game. There's a pretty large amount of English players in there (including me and a few friends) and it's great so as long you stay off of Block 01 and Block 20. They have a weeeeird community.
Avalanche Reviews I think you're allowed to change ships. I can go check. EDIT: You can, though a few things get left behind on your original ship and it costs about $10.
"Pay to win" doesn't mean "pay to play". You got the two phrases confused. Pay to win simply means that you can spend real money for an in-game advantage. In PSO2 you can spend real money for increased storage space, higher chance of finding rare items, and you can indirectly buy meseta by buying cosmetic items with real money and then selling them to other players for meseta. So PSO2 absolutely qualifies for pay to win. Some of the things in the cash shop cannot be acquired via free methods as well. For those of us who are competitive and care about having a fair experience, it ruins that.
I didn't know that there things that could only be bought with real money. That sucks, but it didn't really effect me too much, so I can't hate it too much.
Loved PSO back in the day. My Dreamcast still is connected and gets regular play. I also have the broadband adapter as well as the Gamecube release and BBA for it as well. Doesn't look like the private servers get much play these days. Would love to play this but I don't play PC games anymore, so an official Vita release would be preferred. SEGA of America continues to be a total letdown, and never releases the games that we want anymore. Who knows if this and Nova will ever get officially localized.
Hey Jared good review I do have mention something if you don't mind for you. when you go back to PSO2 I like to mention that the majoraty of the english speaking communty on pos2 is in ship 2 I dunno if you have to restart your char again but we're all there. Good review but I have to mention for me and the dreamcast why did you mention gundam side story. I think that was a great game even on the dreamcast firstperson gundam game? a must take a look for gundam fan but I kid and going off topic sorry.
Leon0000 Everyone has been telling me about ship 2, and now I'm kicking myself for not doing enough research. I have found a small group that hangs out on 4 though, so it's not too bad. As far as side story goes.........I FUCKING LOVE IT!! Easily one of my favorite games on the console.
Avalanche Reviews oh yes side story is the BEST GAME EVER I'm glad someone love the game as much as me. anyway no worry about the ships bro. As long as your having fun and the groups cool thats great.
I was playing EQ in the days that PS1 was big so when I checked it out I honestly couldn't get into it. It was an impressive MMORPG for a console but it was inferior to EQ. At least it was cheaper to play, though (no need to buy a PC with a graphics card).
Michael Green I never got into EQ, I guess the sci-fi aspect of PS is what drew me in, as I'm not too big on the look of high fantasy. Plus, it being an action rpg was really interesting.
Hey guys, you know how he says the English release was delayed indefinitely? Well... It's happening: blogs.sega.com/2012/07/09/phantasy-star-online-2-is-coming-west/
Localization got cancelled so the only option is to make a Japanese SEGA ID and jump in. arks-layer.com/ this tool will do everything for you. Ship #2 is still the English player base ship even thought some people hate it XD.
It even went open source recently. Also the community created other tools to help the players build their class. arks-layer.com/skillsim/ and pso2affix.seilent.net/
STOP 🛑 RIGHT THERE!! It’s a online game so you can’t play a disk game without being able to get internet ? Sorry I don’t understand what is the point you can’t play it without the internet??? What is the point of owning it!!!!!
sadly what was once a great game is a frustrating, convoluted mess of a game with insane requirements to level past level 75, to very expensive (in terms of in-game gold needed) grinding to improve high star rare weapons and units, and weapon crafting is a hugely expensive gold-sink.
i believe the main factor of why there hasnt been an NA release has more to do with the localization and legal rights of the many *MANY* collaborations PSO2 has on the JP servers, lets say they do a rushed job and dont renew the collab contenent and release the game, it would feel like youre gonna be missing roughtly 40% of the contenent from the game original release, SEA servers have an english vercion on their hands but its poorly translated and incredibly butchered to the point they are stuck on a game vercion from 2 years ago
They fired the guys who where localisating it at Sega US because of budget restriction. Then the game started it's life and Sega started to do some collabs which means now they can't localize the game without asking to everyone who owns the right of the games/animes they collabored with.
Heh, it looks more like a improved Phantasy Star Universe then Phantasy Star Online. Which; I mean it was an improved PSO to begin with... Still. I've played every NA PS game from PSO on. PSO, PSOE3, PSO:BB, PSU, PSP(Phatasy star Portable. (Takes place in the same world as PSU.) and PSP2. This... looks more disappointing then anything. I am sure it is very fun still; but from what you explained it sounds like it suffers from; what I call 'ultimate mode syndrome'. Where the game scales up poorly, so it takes ages to kill anything/level up/earn money. Of course that event thing; sounds like it'd earn money easily enough. However; photon artes; is what made PSU/PSP games so dull. Being a skill you hand to use to grind up to power up or hope you found a stronger disc to just upgrade your skill like you did with techs only now for your weapons not just your spells. PSP2 made it a little different rather then just having a TP (PP in PSU/PSP); that went down when you used a skill; that you could spam until empty, making you need to use a monofuild; it was more of a stamana bar that renergized over time rather quickly. Allowing you to have a dodge roll almost taken from Monster Hunter. I am sure the game is great... How ever a 'sequel' this does not feel... Heck, replace the 'darkers'; did you call them? With the SEED in PSU/PSP, and it's basically the same thing. Heck, I am sure there is even connections from PSO to PSU eras. Not to slam on this game. It's Free to play; which is awesome... If PSU didn't turn Free to play before it died off; with some major missing things with out pay. (No room/MAG/player shop/item storage.)
Mai Ostergod I think the overall control and feel was a lot closer to the original, just sped up. I played universe and portable, and while 2 uses a lot of the features from them, they never felt as close to the original, as 2 does. So far, it seems to scale nicely. Finding discs to learn new photon arts isn't constant, but often enough to keep things fresh. It great fun, you should try it, it is far and away, better than universe was.
MrStrikecentral Actually, from what I've some to understand, it's not that Sega doesn't want to port the game over, it's that Sega of America does not have the staff to localize and maintain a MMO. I've heard that Sega has had to layoff a large portion of their workforce and that's just sad.
Thanks for reminding me how much I hate Sega now. Why won't they localize anything good? We don't need more games featuring the reanimated corpse of Sonic the Hedgehog - we need stuff like PSO2!
I'll definitely have to look into this one. I don't usually get into MMO's, simply because I don't have the time that I feel is needed to make some of those experiences worth while. But still, I'll give this a look. ;) Thanks for the recommendation and great video!

Right?! I played it once solo, but as soon as my wife made a character and started doing missions with me, the game really started to shine.
+Avalanche Reviews Dark Force also known as Dark Falz, was the main antagonist in all original PS games.
I hate to admit this, but I never actually played PSO before, but this looks great!
...For an MMO, that is. ;)
SuperDerek RPG Reviews You look great for an mmo
+SuperDerek RPGs It's free to play online right now at PSO Ultima.
Avalanche, what is your favourite theme in PSO2? Some of the music here is utterly fantastic, like the soundtrack that plays during the Challenge Mile Quests and the Tokyo themes.
+NephyrisX That's a tough one, but I have to go with the Naberius Forrest theme, It's so smooth and ambient.

Karrott2cents I was in the same boat. Played PSO alone 99 percent of the time.
Back in 2001 i played Phantasy Star Online (the original PSO) with 56k modem on the Dreamcast, such a great memories back then :D

MarsGundam The Japanese would rather go under, than adopt a tactic that wasn't originated in their own country. It's a little ridiculous.
Avalanche Reviews I find it strange that they have this perception that America isn't a big market for Japanese games.
It probably doesn't help that they don't have a good opinion on the American/European side of consumer base.
Dammit, Japan! LET ME LOVE YOU!!

Forgot to mention the biggest kicker; Performance.
My god, this game performs so damn optimized that even potato machines can even get 60+fps.
Now that you mention it, I was running it on my tiny htpc and it was perfect.
I keep Ep I&II on the GameCube spinning every so often! ! Thanks for all the info :)))
+Alex DÉumont I used to play ep 1 and 2 with my brother. Good fucking times!
Holy fuck this is the funnest looking MMO I've ever seen! We NEED THIS! And xbox 360 gamepad support? Holy FUCK!
+ArtifiShuL Instinct Right!!!?!? My wife played it on the 360 pad and said it was perfect. Such a fun game to play with a group.

Ok I won't give up hope then! I gave up hope on Shenmue 3 and FF7 remake and they came through so I learned to have more hope for these things.
Also I don't have the best PC in the world. Looks well optimized from what I've seen. What kind of a rig do you need to run this game well?
+ArtifiShuL Instinct It ran perfectly on an 8 year old dual core intel CPU @ 3.3ghz, and 3 gigs of ram. I think you'll be able to run it well on pretty much anything.

Rainbow Dash I can agree, sega has a really shitty track record with sever upkeep and general good decisions.

instead of releasing an awesome game like PSO2, Sega said "You know what? We will
give you Sonic Boom instead." Well, sonic did "boom" for us all.
ShiningNoctowls I think we can all agree that everything worked out fine............................................
Actually, there's the SEA version, but it is behind the original in updates and has an IP Block.
And yeah, I am on the SEA version.

Localization got cancelled so the only option is to make a Japanese SEGA ID and jump in. arks-layer.com/ this tool will do everything for you. Ship #2 is still the English player base ship even thought some people hate it XD.
+LordKaiser003 That tool is so much better than how I used to have to patch it.
It even went open source recently. Also the community created other tools to help the players build their class. arks-layer.com/skillsim/ and pso2affix.seilent.net/
+LordKaiser003 that's fucking awesome. I really need to get back on.
That fangirling section. Calm down, ya weeaboo!
I can only contain it for so long
STOP 🛑 RIGHT THERE!!
Glad I wasn;t around for any of the near end game stuff like that.
Damn it,Sega! We get sonic boom but not this!? ARRGFGGGGGG!
The Dali Popka Shhhhhhhh, they'll hear you.
Why wouldn't they release this in North America? It sucks seeing so many games be Japan only.
+Samuel Evans if people can translate it for free, they could. Can't believe it still hasn't come over here.
i believe the main factor of why there hasnt been an NA release has more to do with the localization and legal rights of the many *MANY* collaborations PSO2 has on the JP servers, lets say they do a rushed job and dont renew the collab contenent and release the game, it would feel like youre gonna be missing roughtly 40% of the contenent from the game original release, SEA servers have an english vercion on their hands but its poorly translated and incredibly butchered to the point they are stuck on a game vercion from 2 years ago
They fired the guys who where localisating it at Sega US because of budget restriction. Then the game started it's life and Sega started to do some collabs which means now they can't localize the game without asking to everyone who owns the right of the games/animes they collabored with.
niiiiice, downloading it right now!
Havik092 Sweet!!!
Weird i thought they where gonna release a official US and EU version on the PSvita..guess they canceled that..ugh.
ILL WATCH WHAT I WANT!!!
NOT UNDER MY ROOF, YOU WON'T!!
I DEMAND A US RELEASE IMMEDIATELY! Actually I demanded it over 3 years ago. (sigh)
MrStrikecentral For real!!
MrStrikecentral Actually, from what I've some to understand, it's not that Sega doesn't want to port the game over, it's that Sega of America does not have the staff to localize and maintain a MMO. I've heard that Sega has had to layoff a large portion of their workforce and that's just sad.
MrStrikecentral Your demands are served
Thanks for reminding me how much I hate Sega now. Why won't they localize anything good? We don't need more games featuring the reanimated corpse of Sonic the Hedgehog - we need stuff like PSO2!
***** Exactly!
Good day to be an Xbox gamer!
Agreed
