    You can tell this game's devs didn't really contact a publicist or get a publisher on board or something because it came out in 2018 the same year as Celeste and the same year Hollow Knight really blew up and it's up there with those games but not a single major video game media outlet reviewed this game whereas everyone reviewed Celeste and HK

    I bought this game last week or so, and I highly recommend it!
    Not a lot of games are polished like this. The fact that a multiplayer setting in a single player game feels alive makes all the characters believable.
    This game's an instant classic in my book, even if it's still a work in progress~

      It's because it's all made by hand, it's written from scratch based on the Impact JS engine, no crappy generic RPG maker assets or stuff like that. The devs actually hold a development stream every sunday on Twitch (look for RadicalFishGames)

    The thing about the puzzles in Crosscode is that they're easy to conceptualize but often challenging to execute, with some satisfying moves to top it off. That's what makes it so engaging and not as boring as every other game. Most other games fail by making the solutions to their puzzles too obscure and/or making them too easy to execute. And Crosscode does them in a way where they are just difficult enough, keeping them from becoming more frustrating than fun, making you stay very confident in your mental abilities, along with keeping everything feeling extra creative even on old puzzle concepts.

      Also thanks a lot for this awesome review! We're still working on the game, hoping to release it later this year (yes, march 2017 won't be enough time). I can fully understand if people want to wait for the game to be finished, it's also probably the best way to experience the final product. • @WervynAnixil
      @WervynAnixil 8 лет назад

      The game has frequently hit Steam sales for $16-$17, but I'm not expecting a major discount sale until after the official release. The bundle it was a part of was largely a mistake, owing to some developer-publisher miscommunication. Essentially:
      Deck13: Hey we're thinking about putting this game in a cheap bundle, how's that sound?
      RadicalFish: *misses email because they're busy developing amazing content*
      Deck13: Okay so we went ahead and did that.
      RadicalFish: Wait what just happened?
      I think short term this didn't do them many favors, since being included in a cheap bundle so early in development just carries this associative odor of shovelware. Long term though, it may turn out to be one of those things where some guy gets to say "see I told you this was a brilliant marketing idea", as those people who picked it up and promptly forgot about it, finally get around to it and think "wait, when did I download THIS gem?"
      Word of mouth is ultimately going to make or break CrossCode's mass-market success. The developers are a really small group and they don't really have anyone with marketing experience. Their publisher? From my limited perspective it's hard to see how much benefit RadicalFish has gotten out of that relationship versus just going solo, but I don't know all their circumstances. Regardless, if you like what you see, tell all your friends about this great game! It deserves far more praise and attention than it's been getting.

    As soon as you said Seiken Densetsu you peaked my interests and I started to notice visually as well as combat wise some of the similarities. For me I am usually jaded from computer RPGs with the same usual pixel visual style. As I assume there isn't much to the gameplay.
    But man this actually looks interesting. Goes to show you can't judge a game by its initial coat of paint. The look of the puzzles give me a feeling of playing a Zelda game trying to figure out exactly what you need to do over trial and error.
    Usually I'm wary of early access games but if they have enough content to keep someone entertained for that many hours, you have sold me on the idea. As I was happy with the amount of content I got with Darkest Dungeon and Starbound.

    • @MegaChaosGelee
      @MegaChaosGelee 8 лет назад

      I think there is quite a lot to the gameplay. Maybe not jaw-droppingly groundbreaking, but the ball-throwing mechanism that's used both for puzzles and combat is pretty clever and helps differentiate Cross Code from it's action RPG peers. The enemies (including epic boss battles) that come with their own interesting strategies and quirks also help. But what really makes the game shine even now in it's unfinished state is simply the level of love and detail put into it. The tons of sidequests and secrets and little allusions is far beyond other games of the kind.

    .hack / Seiken Densetsu is a pretty good description, just from the footage and information you gave in the video. When I saw the intro with the gameplay, my immediate thought was that it reminded me of Secret of Mana with the camera zoomed out. Ahh, the story isn't complete yet? Hrmmm... I think that I would personally rather wait until there is a finished version of the story. I am one of those people that will often let a season of a TV show go by and marathon it, so I don't have to worry about waiting for the next episode to come out to get the story. :P Still, I will keep my eyes on this one! :)

      Its combat is fast paced and 2d, but cross code is a little more forgiving. I guess if you ever wanted Hyper Light Drifter to play more like an old action rpg, you'll love it. At its current price, I would say it's definitely worth a look, based on the similar combat to HLD.

      It has been in development for over 4 years but I think this time the youtuber is showing something outside of what people may consider as 'mainstream' as this is an indie game. This video isn't meant to showcase Crosscode as a 'classic' game. But it does have element that arguably carries what makes games good, and many games share elements with each other, whether they are classic or not. And to boot, this game 'will' be considered a classic in the future, but still a hidden and underrated gem.

    The biggest issue I have with this game is that combat breaks the background music -> this is why the original Secret of Mana was SO GOOD is that the combat was so ambient and immersive in the environments. I found myself actively avoiding combat in Crosscode simply because it was so segmented. Got 50 hours in on the finished game so far. The other thing is that the rewards for traversing the level design . It's an amazing game. Also as a video game music afficianado (I actually transcribe video game music to piano) I didn't find this game's soundtrack THAT amazing. It has some standout tracks but several rather dull ones as well, balances out to about a B grade which compared with FF/Suikoden/Octopath which were A+ soundtracks just felt a bit lacking.
    It's a shame the devs didn't seem to promote it or it would have gotten more attention - def should have been nominated for best RPG last year

    i can definitely agree with every point in this video; crosscode is wonderful. i saw a review of it before and i decided to pick it up recently. it compet- no, took over my favorite game (borderlands 2) in terms of enjoyment i got, and blew it away in how good the story is (yeah a looter shooter doesn't really have a great story but i considered it my favorite story before).
    also, as it's out completely now, i'd love to see the opinion and experience of the early birds of it. i'm literally craving more crosscode while on vacation now, but reading the experience of others should hopefully quench it. (yes this vid is 2 years old, but I don't care much)

    Man how the hell are you so good at finding such good hidden gems that I seriously want to play? I am very into hidden gems and keep up with that word of mouth a lot and nobody finds hidden gems like you can! This game looks sooo awesome especially if the story is as good as you say. I don't do so well with super hard games but if the story is great it'll motivate me to keep trying especially if it's all fair! Also assuming the music in this video is music from the game, that sound is amazing! How does nobody talk about this game!?! Really hope it gets released on time! Btw are those "players" running around actual people you see or is it like a fake MMO type deal?

    Thanks for the review :-)
    The cool thing about the story /setting for me that nobody seems to mention is that it's not just an MMO. That has been done to death by now imho with the likes of .hack or Sword Art Online. No, what I love about Cross Code is that it's more a mixture between those and James Cameron's movie Avatar, because the world is real! The plot plays out on an actual planet the players are remotely connected to.
    Never heard of anyone trying such a combination before. It's novel and inventive, at least in the area of RPGs. I don't like stories with the concept that the main setting is only a simulation. That seems like a downgrade for me, the events aren't as important anymore. On the other hand, I love the tropes and terms of playing videogames and the dialogue surrounding it. With Cross Code, you get the best of both worlds: Exploring another planet while at the same time being able to listen to Emilie's nerdy talk, for example. It's genius :D

  • @NomoregoodnamesD8

    CrossCode seems to be at the tipping point where the engine is streamlined enough for the artists to just pump artwork into the game. The primary bottleneck, and this comes to no surprise, is the writing.
    We can only guess how many narratives have been drafted and scrapped since this video was posted while we wait for a continuation of the story, but anyone of the designers could decide to add a special attack (the last update blog has a dozen or so) without any help from the programmers.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  7 лет назад

      I keep hearing about new dungeons and areas, but I'm wanting to just wait for it to be finished, before I jump back in.

    • @Lachsen
      @Lachsen 7 лет назад +1

      Actually the programmer did all of the special attacks - that was me. :P
      It's our decision to continue the story later, since we want to release most of the story towards the end. That way the players won't reach cliff hangers and have to wait a long time for the conclusion.
      We now have most of the dungeons fully implemented and soon reach the point where there is nothing left to do other than to continue the story. And then we hope to finish that part (and the full game) until June-September 2017. It's a bit hard to tell if we'll make it because the workload for the story is very difficult to estimate.

      @NomoregoodnamesD8 7 лет назад

      I'm currently working with an amateur development team in a project class at my college. We have no content pipelines whatsoever and we are presenting our alpha this week... We are making a tower defense building our own engine around a wrapper over OpenGLwhich just restricts functionality of the API; we have to do our own lighting if we wanted lighting. Also, we are doing everything entirely in C90
      We are being taught how to build things modularly even though we have trouble sticking to that. I found an example where a tower's projectile code would call the function on the creep to kill it if it was dead.

    Looks interesting. When i first started watching the video i was gonna say the frame rate looks like its almost too smooth, kinda damaging that SVGA retro aesthetic the game has, but i guess it kinda needs to be that high for the combat.
    That aiming system almost looks like the game was designed for mouse and keyboard. Its good you can play with a controller though.

    • @hiighcalibre
      @hiighcalibre 7 лет назад

      Yeah, I guess it depend on when the rest drops/how much comes out this next release, if I will go back to the beginning or not. I'm definitely more of a completionist than a multiple playthrough kinda guy generally. I have a tendency to do every little thing in a game and then loose interest when my character reaches peak power and the game turns easy (usually before the plot resolves)...but this game is so much about the challenge from the puzzles to the boss fights it definitely has that old school difficultly about it (definitely reminds me of Zelda more than anything) and I'm certainly going to complete it once it's complete-able.

    Ha back when the release was March 2017. The game being fully released September 2018, still isn't complete. A lot of the subplots and side quest chains remained open without proper conclusions to them. Its like the devs just forgot about that when polishing up the inner mechanics for release.
