      @@sandman45 yeah I got an xbone after that comment, so much to learn lol cancelled 4 gig 360 which was a joke. Maybe I should get this; I forgot. Valkyria Revolution and game pass spoiled me for a while, let alone rocket league and trine 4 and the mk11/Injustice 2 deal. Thanks for reminding me, much cheaper to buy disc on eBay than online for $20. I'll buy.
      Just remembered a few things: assassin's Creed 3 remastered on Xbox one had liberation as well (confusing to know these were on 360 and not compatible lol), and I prefer to keep the games on gold after trying out game pass and seeing them pull, though I goofed on the $1 (redeemed hard drive with 1 month gift card first so I couldn't do it).
      But yeah I'm good now, enjoyed blue dragon, nba jam, guardian heroes and metal gear rising revengeance for backwards compatible. Phantasy star online 2 is free too.

    Xbox 360 seemed like the JRPG destination for exclusives when this was released. Tales of Vesparia and Star Ocean were exclusives, leading me to choose 360, but exclusives stopped coming after 2010 or so.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  7 лет назад +17

      They sure did, and that sucks. I wonder if it was cheaper to develop for ps3, because a lot of low budget jrpgs ended up getting released on that platform.

    • @robinmattheussen2395
      @robinmattheussen2395 7 лет назад +14

      I definitely don't think that's the case. In general, the 360 was pretty much always the lead development platform for multiplatform games, and 360 versions were almost always SLIGHTLY better optimised until developers finally mastered the system at the end of its lifecycle. The decision to use the Cell processor in the PS3 has often been regarded as an unwise choice made by Sony, but I don't know enough about it on a technical level to comment on that. In general, I think it's pretty safe to say that development on the 360 was easier and less costly for most seasoned developers, although it's probably a lot more nuanced than that.
      In the end, it's probably the fact that the PS3 vastly outsold the 360 in its native Japan that caused the decline of JRPGs on Microsoft's machine, but it did get a surprising amount of games in the genre (I mean, compared to the original Xbox at least). Infinite Undiscovery, Blue Dragon, Tales Of Vesperia, The Last Remnant, Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Magna Carta 2, Enchanted Arms, Lost Odyssey. Nothing mindblowing obviously, though I do have a strong fondness of Lost Odyssey.

    All I knew of this game was the dinner song. Glad to hear there's an actual, solid game behind it.
    I missed out on many games for the 360 because I swore that if my 360 ever redringed after my warranty was up I wouldn't buy another one for at least 10 years just to be sure that Microsoft didn't make any money off it. And sure enough; 2 weeks after my warranty was up it died on me.

    Lost Odyssey was my main reason to get a 360. Even though it has very few JRPGs, at least they're ones I love -- Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, & Manga Carta 2. I didn't care for The Last Remnant (basically a SaGa game). I do have Infinite Undiscovery, but it's been on my backlog all these years, due to bad things I've heard (& many games getting released).
    But this review urged me to try it soon, as I love most of Tri-Aces' games (especially the Star Ocean series). Thanks.

    Remember liking this game, but quit 15 hours or so into it due to two crushing problems: horrible save point placement and awkward healing mechanics. For healing you either request it from other characters (who dont alwats respond) or use the menu that doesn't pause combat leaving you helpless. After I lost to a boss while trying to reach a healing potion only to go back an hour to the start of the dungeon, I decided I wasn't having more frustration than fun.

    • @JCLegendary
      @JCLegendary 7 лет назад +4

      Yeah, fumbling for healing is what eventually got me to drop the game too. I still want to go back and try it again some time.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  7 лет назад +4

      I actually had that same problem. I found that my healers would end up getting their heal spells canceled by an enemy attack. So I ended up running away a bit, and having the party follow. If you put your weapon away, they will too, and then they can heal you, once you've lead them away from enemies. Also, keeping a big stock of healing items helps, since everyone will use those, and you can't interrupt item uses.

    • @SpryoRuLes
      @SpryoRuLes 6 лет назад

      John F. I will agree with there for the healing and save points some are just downright weird, but the healing problem you get used to it and find ways around. In all honesty you can do what most people did which is turn off all healing spells and then your characters will always use items and sometimes with better frequency than healing spells

    I'm not sure why people tend to say that the 360 was lacking in JRPGs because I found it to be the opposite. It even had some exclusives, like this game, that the PS3 didn't get. Additionally it also received Eternal Sonata way before it was ported to the PS3, as well as Tales of Vesperia. Exclusive wise there was Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Magna Carta 2. Though not exclusive there was also NieR, Resonance of Fate, Enchanted Arms, Star Ocean: The Last Hope as well as all three of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy of games. I actually bought the 360 over the PS3 because at the time I got it the PS3 didn't really have many JRPGs, though this was around the time that Eternal Sonata was released on the 360.

    To me, the whole game is a very mixed bag, there are so many things I like about it, but too many annoyances get in the way of enjoying these things. The gameplay is fun and intricate, but due to hecticness often devolves into button-mashing. The story is deep and interesting, but over half of the game is focused on almost everyone being assholes towards Capell for no particular reason or stating the obvious. I think Tri-Ace could really do so much more if there was a sequel or maybe if they went the FF route and made each game a separate thing, but left the core mechanics.

    Great review as always, my man!
    I am so, so glad you talked about this game! I recently picked this up on the 360 for under $10, and I was blown away! The only thing anyone talks about with this game is it's name, but for me, this is the kind of game that sold me on the console in the first place.
    On a Tri-Ace related note, have you ever tried Exist Archive on PS4/Vita?

      Thank you! No, I never heard of that game till today, and it looks really cool. I think that would make for a perfect addition to my small vita library.

    i don't know why people kept saying bad things about this game..the moment the game got released my friend kept saying that he's played it and told me not to get it as it's a really bad game, however when i finally got the chance to play it, it became one of those games that i really enjoyed back when i played it..tbh it's one of the top few jrps on the 360 that i am really fond of, the others being lost odyssey and tales of vesperia.

    Picked this up earlier this year with Last Remnant, Star Ocean, and Vesperia. Xbox 360 just never seemed to make sense as a destination for RPGs, and the idea of the two together (in retrospect) still sounds weird ha.

    sucks that Sony made the PS3 so hard to develop and created the CELL which was a nightmare to program for in 2006-2008. Lot of Japanese devs had to keep making PS2 games because they couldn't jump to next gen. Microsoft gave a lot of support to Japanese devs that wanted to make games on the xbox 360 but in the end foreign consoles just don't sell in Japan. Sony really screwed Japan big time but I am glad the PS4 is easy to develop for and now all these Japanese devs are making a huge comeback! Infinite Undiscovery trailer had this awesome song that plays but it was never used in the game, I always remember that when thinking of this game

      Which sucks because the ps3 was such a powerhouse. I would have loved to see devs really take advantage of it for more rpgs.

    Always avoided this one, but after watching your review it appears it's actually pretty damn solid. I prefer action RPGs over traditional turn-based ones, so I may end up checking this out.

    Damn, I didn't even know this game exited, and you already convinced me to give it a try 4 minutes in.
    This reminds of Magna Carta 2, which was another great RPG from Xbox 360 I barely got the chance to play. Have you ever played it? Would be awesome to see a review of that.

    • @lyhthegreat
      @lyhthegreat 4 года назад +1

      i played it for awhile but i felt like the story wasn't really that engaging as this game and also the constant switching during combat was although unique but rather hard to get used to. Maybe i'll give it another shot one of these days when i have the time.

    I just bought this game a day ago and I uses RUclips to watch videos about it to get up to date with it and I'm pleasantly surprised to see a new video still being made for this game which came out in 2009. It's also much better than last remnants and enchanted arms which came out in the same era one is glitchy and I can't believe squareenix made and release it. The other one is dated and tedious.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  7 лет назад +1

      Yeah, it definitely stood above the rest of the 360 rpgs. It really felt like they were passionate about making it. As for reviewing an obscure game, from the past, that's what we're all about here!

    I still think this was a hidden 360 gem, they had very few JRPGs on the 360 but this, lost odyssey and the last remnant were all uniquely brilliant!
