It’s been a game changer for me. I have used macs and PCs for years and always hated the fan noise on Mac laptops especially when you push them a bit, this m1 has as much power as my iMac but never gets hot or loud and the battery life is insane! I am looking forward to see what they do with the 16” and new iMacs
Seriously. I much prefer Thinkpads in terms of feel, I like the trackpoint, the keyboard, the chassi, I've used ThinkPads for many years, but Apple has really come up with something here. I would like a combination of the two. Maybe I'll jut have to wait a few years for Intel/AMD to catch up or for Lenovo to move to a similar ARM architecture.
Very nice video. I have a strong bias for ThinkPads because they always check the boxes that matter for me, but I can see how some may be tempted by the MacBook’s performance with the M1 being so well optimized and having better battery life. For me though, there’s more to buying a laptop than raw performance numbers. If I need all of the power I can get, I have a desktop. The keyboard, display, portability, build quality, all of that matters too. The ThinkPad has a much better keyboard and as you said the soft touch palmrest feels more comfortable than the MacBook’s hard (and sharp) aluminum. As someone who does a lot of typing on the go that is a major deciding factor for me. The TrackPoint is a lot better for me than a touchpad, at this point I’ll never buy a laptop that doesn’t have a pointing stick. There are times a touchpad may be better but Lenovo gives you the option. The X1 Nano also has fast charging which somewhat makes up for the inferior battery life, but 9ish hours is still very good as far as Windows laptops go and I imagine that is sufficient for most people. The main reason I go with ThinkPads over Apple products is the serviceability. While the X1 lineup historically has not been very upgradeable compared to some of its thicker counterparts, Lenovo’s machines are still far more serviceable than any current MacBook. As you mentioned in the video, even the SSDs are soldered in on the MacBook and if the motherboard fails there is no way to recover your data. The ThinkPad’s SSD is socketed and many other failure-prone components, such as the battery, speakers, fan, touchpad, fingerprint reader, and display assembly can be easily replaced without proprietary screws or dealing with glue. Plus Lenovo has service manuals and part numbers for everything listed on their website, while Apple has a very strong anti-repair stance that extends far beyond making it hard to take apart your laptop. Their anti-repair practices and extensive lobbying against movements like Right to Repair are among the main reasons I’ll never buy another Mac, as enticing as some of their products may be. With Windows PCs moving back to 16:10 displays and the quality of their panels getting comparable to what Apple puts in its devices, there is less and less reason to use a Mac unless you really prefer Mac OS or the Apple ecosystem.
Sebi, no surprise coming from you! Your content inspired me to get an x200 a few weeks ago. Running arch linux on it, lots of fun, but fan noise keeps me on my 2014 mbp most of the time, sadly.
I had always avoided macs in past because of poor price performance ratio, but now, apple wins where the pc usually shines. quite funny to even think about a mac is cheaper and perform better.
Well, if you could write the price down within 3 years in a business it might be the better value. But i'm so tired about throwing machines away before their end of time, just because they are not supported or something is not repairable. Then the price performance still isn't good if you think about all the problems of this total unrepairable M1 systems.
@@picanha694 Not sure what you mean by that. The expectation, previously, was that a "phone chip" wouldn't hold a candle to a "real PC". Now, we see that the M1 chip simply smokes intel's offerings in the same machine categories. We've only seen the lowest-end Macs with M1 chips so far, so it remains to be seen how the higher end models will fare. But I'm pretty certain the expectations have flipped completely.
@@themardybum08 It's actually an amazing device when you get the hang of it. I'm a touch typist, so there's something magnificent about my hands never having to leave the keyboard.
@@GregoryRCosta For this type of work it is great indeed, it misses though a lot of functionality , like scroll up/down left/right etc. I mean if the work at hand is moving the pointer it is great, but it cannot replace a trackpad imho.
Haha that is a long time to dip your toe in the water. As a develop I use both Windows and Mac OS and love both in different ways. I wish I could take the best features from each
@@MashITTech I run Parallels on my Mac 16". I have to use Windows for some work tasks. It solves the main objective I have to using both: simple short cuts like copy and paste. When I go back and forth, I always end up hitting the wrong button. With Parallels it defaults the windows to the Mac setup. Problem solved.
Guys, kind of the same for me. The reason is I just couldn’t get used to the redrawn MsOffice for Mac. Also, no apps on MacOS for engineering. These issues make MacOS feel kind of inferior OS for me vs Windows. Dunno, maybe other people can live without Windows or bootcamp completely.
Just grabbed a Nano g1 brand new from Lenovo outlet for $750 USD (plus my state's brutal taxes). Very happy to get my hands on this factory new. I will be moving on from my t430 which I purchased TEN YEARS AGO and still daily drive (after several at-home hardware upgrades). Like most ThinkPads, resale value is good and the used market is always any option for both buyers and sellers. That said, I was thrilled to get one brand new at a good price. Can't wait to use it and to keep my eye on the future of the x1 lineup.
@@FilipinoPride10 No complaints so far. The i7 is ample powerful. After all the updates and installing tpfancontrol the fan is not noticeable on battery (windows second-lowest power setting). Waking from sleep speed is impressive and the screen is unreal. Amazing aspect ratio for working. I can get by with 2 usb-c ports so I am fine there. The portability is unmatched. I guess the reason to go G9 X1C is for the ports.
When it comes to the used market, the Nano starts to inch forward to being more desirable .. I purchased an i7 Nano 1st gen off ebay a couple months ago and it ended up costing me around 520 USD - a MBP of the same vintage and similarly specced is easily 2x that price
I have a brand new p14s and it feels like if Apple brought the black macbook back and ran windows on it. The keyboard is even better than on macbooks, and the speakers/screen are far better than what I was expecting. I'm also considering getting one of the new macbooks later this year since those look fantastic as well.
@@Bc232klm even better? MacBook habe the worst keyboard of the price range. And the worst outside screen.but Tue best battery life and can do Tue least things. When I could install Linux and or run windows that was fine but like this..all I got left is a bad keyboard.
Watched the whole thing David and pretty much your wonderful practical tests confirmed my thoughts and predictions on the Nano vs m1 mac. Lenovo needs to bring the price of the Nano down to be competitive to the M1 Mac. If it was the same price point I still choose the Nano over the M1. The software issues on the M1 and no dual display via dock is a killer for business. If Lenovo put the AMD Ryzen 5000 in there now we talking its bye bye M1 altogether.
Thanks mate, I have a real soft spot for thinkpads so would love them to become more competitive. Have you seen the x1 extreme gen 4? Looks like it has put right all the gripes from the gen 3 and could be a real xps competitor
i do miss the macbook 12 form factor though, comparable to the x1 nano in terms of weight. I guess now it will make more sense if apple decide to put m1 into a 12 inch and it will be insanely nice.
arnt they both about the same speed with M1 being slightly slower depending on the configuration? Apple M1 knocks out the Microsoft ARM based laptops though.
Noone seems to understand the beauty of having a trackpoint on a small 13 inch laptop it allows you to be closer to your laptop.. When the laptop is that small you need to have your face closer to the laptop to see the small text on a tiny screen. Using a touchpad would put you further from your laptop because your hand and arm needs space in front of the touchpad to use it. Therefore you will be further from your tiny screen. This is even more important if you lay in bed and use your laptop the laptop is forced very close to your face in this position however the touchpad would put you further away from your small screen. This is also the case if you use your laptop on your lap like in a car or on the train it is forced closer to you and it would be easier to use the trackpoint instead of the touchpad Also having a narrow screen that is 16:10 aspect ratio is very important because it is easier for your hands to reach over the keyboard to find the center keys when it is very close to you. Because the body of the laptop is also narrow. If you ever tried using a 14 inch laptop that is very close to you it is hard to press the center keys on a keyboard. Thats why in reality the Lenovo X1 nano is the best small laptop on the market right now for those that like to use a trackpoint.
Are they both DCI-P3? Also, disconnect the computers from the wall and check performance, and see how much running five times takes down your battery life. These are laptops after all, and not portable desktop replacements. You should run the performance tests on battery.
I can certainly do a few performance tests on battery in a separate video. I know the MacBook performs as well on battery but not sure about the nano yet as I have t had as much hands on time
@@MashITTech Well, if you want to see how good a laptop is and how long it will last, you have to unplug it. If you don't do that, you're just using it as a portable desktop. Don't get me wrong - you may want something like a 17" as a portable desktop which is fine. But with something like a 13", chances are you want it more mobile and usable away from the mains. If its performance tanks when not plugged in or if you can only get an hour or two doing the stuff you want to do, then it really doesn't serve its function as laptop. I saw that gangly mess the Thinkpad had as its power supply. Do you honestly want to have to take that mess down to the Starbucks and plug it in? When you're at a cafe or in a lobby do you want to be restricted to the tables along the wall (and even then a table near an outlet)? What about when you're on that plane - assuming someday we'll have the ability to fly again - where you can't plug in a 120w power supply? It's time we stopped making excuses for the devices we use, especially when there exist devices which _can_ be used as laptops.
I just got an X1 nano based on your earlier videos (and some others), and I have to agree 100% with your points and conclusions. I was choosing between the M1 Air, the XPS 13, and the X1 nano. Without writing a novel, I got the nano because it is the lightest, was available immediately, I like ThinkPads, and I already have a powerful desktop. I think the nano is overpriced by about $300, and I accept that the price will likely drop in the comping months. The biggest fault with the mac is macos. I just can't be bothered to learn the intricacies of a 3rd OS.
Thank Jason. It is a lovely machine, especially if you want or need windows and I still have a soft spot for thinkpads. The nano does really well with what intel gives us, intel just really needs to up their game
The weight of the nano is just crazy. 2 years ago I had the 12" Macbook for a month and with its 900 gr it just blew me away. It really felt like magic. And now Lenovo is offering a laptop with similar weight but a 13" screen. Just awesome. I'm still curious whether Apple will re-release the 12" with the M1 processor. Might also be an interesting product.
We are always try to improve as we have only been doing this a few months. Any suggestions? The problem we face with lighting is how dark black laptops are, if we lower lighting we loose detail on black laptops! We are still experimenting though
We currently have 2 LED light boxes either side of the desk and soft lighting for ambiance around the studio. What will the soft box do to help? make the light less stark? Sorry, I am rubbish with the lighting set up, there is so much to learn
@@MashITTech Eh, no worries, videos are great. If you check somewhere between 6:00 and 7:00 you can see that the right side of the ThinkPad is well-lit, while it goes into too-dark towards its left side. The idea would be just to get it more evenly distributed. But I can't really speak because I don't know your setup/space, anyway. Just go for even distribution and it'll be neat. You could also try throwing a yellow or blue-ish cloth/filter over a light box to make it look friendlier (the pure white boxes can sometimes look too clinical). But that's millenial-o-complaining anyway, the video is cool already! :)
Thanks, I am always very interested in feedback! I still have so much to learn. We currently use two lights, one either side of the desk, so I am going to try and mount a soft box above like you suggested. Cheers for the suggestions :)
I believe the two side ports on the ThinkPad Nano are USB4 Thunderbolt™ 4, whereas the M1 MacBooks are only USB4...useful for external GPUs, TB docks, and expandability etc.
The m1 macs are also thunderbolt 3, that’s not what’s stopping the m1 using egpu, Apple just hasn’t written support for it in it’s AS version of big sur
Assuming you live in the UK like me, there's no reason to have LTE on anything other than your phone and use ad-hoc wifi. It's just another component you don't need.
Having now finally finished watching this video it was easily one of the best reviews I’ve seen. Fair, detailed, unbiased, informative, interesting. Got a new subscriber 👍🏻
@@andreabarbera5444 Apple claims it as Studio quality yes of course it isn’t but it’s a name for that Funktion in the MacBook it’s a synonymous for good microphone
the m1 doesnt actualy sleep ! its just like the iphone always on standby ! thats why then you open the lid its awake. also it still remains connected to wifi, and rings if you get a call on your iphone.
For the form factor the MacBook Air would be a better choice in comparison. It also grills the intel CPUS without a fan for less money. You also forgot to unplug the power-brick to show that the performance on the Mac stays the same, even without external power source. This is one of the main points that makes the new M1 stand out from the competition!
@@MashITTech I also think the new t14/p14s models are a good comparison to the new m1 macs and are cheaper than the nano. I have one now and it feels like an ultrabook to me at least, coming from thicker laptops throughout my life. It's as thin as I'd want a laptop, and plenty powerful. And the keyboard really is fantastic. I find myself making excuses to type just to be able to use it more. It really is a dream to type on. The speakers are also far better than expected after looking at reviews on previous models. I do a lot of media consumption on it and it's more than ok for my uses. A 16:10 ratio could make it a tad more usable for certain productivity cases, but I'm more than happy with the investment I made with it.
I have one question.. which of the two, if its damaged, can still be repaired easily and didnt have to pay and arm or leg just to get repaired? thank you & have a nice day
Regarding the finish, some of us with more corrosive sweat chemistry experience severe discoloration and pitting on the aluminum surfaces, even after a few months of use. This is really visible on space gray macs. Thinkpad's finish may wear down along the edges and show some oils, but after a few years of usage it should look better than macbook. At least, this has been my experience. Also, if your laptop falls or hits something, the macbook's soft aluminum will dent and bend, and sometimes you can't close the lid anymore for example. A thinkpad would end up with scratches and scrapes, but it should keep its shape better.
M1 processor is crazy, really impressed by the performance and efficiency. Sadly can't leave Thinkpad cause it has good keyboard and seamless trackpoint experience. Thanks a lot dude, very detailed comparison, enjoy watching it 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it. I am lucky enough to have both a windows and a mac (I need both for development) but I wish I could make a hybrid m1 mac with a thinkpad keyboard and matte screen :) Looking forward to the Gen 9 carbon to be released as I really want to review that soon
Except you can buy 2 Macbok airs for the price of 1 thinkpa but it doesnt have double the features. That makes it dificult to opt for the thinkpad. And a macbook air can beat the performance of the thinkpad. I wish it couldnt. But it does. Even interms of battery life.
thinkpads are interesting only with a discount thinkpads are *often* on sale... macbook, never, right ? I bought a X1 Carbon 7 online, with 35% discount I'm happy with it, but I would not have bought it at full price
@@ludovitche True :-) Thinkpads are interesting to own. A Macbook feels disgraceful and not right to own. But it still doenst make up for the fact that the Macbook sir is cheaper and more performant...
There's just one deal-breaking criteria that was never mentioned: which one is a "walled garden" and which one gives you full access and configuration of the hardware?
I actually have both Macbook Pro and Thinkpad, but with the 2020 intel i5 version for Mac and 2020 T490 series i7 for Lenovo (both have 16gb or RAM). I honestly would prefer the Macbook for its ease of use especially with its trackpad, keyboards, build quality and snappy OS. But in terms of my use cases for work, my Thinkpad goes pretty well for heavy programming especially for Python, C# and SQL. On the other hand, my Macbook fights really well in Web Development, C++ and Git integration since Mac uses a Linux-based OS. And yeah my personal laptop is with Macbook, the video and audio playback of this machine is top-notch even for an Intel-based! No laptop is perfect for all use cases, but if you can have both, then why not? haha!
Haha you sound like me! I am fortunate enough to have both and prefer aspects of both OS's. I also do a lot of development and prefer the Mac in this regards in most cases but prefer a windows machine when it comes to systems support.
You may compare those but Windows is the one makes X1 Nano a trash compared to M1 MBP. I have both 16 MacBook Pro and X1 but X1 run hot, louder and runs slower in docker image works.
I think people need to understand that many of us that are Thinkpad users prefer the TrackPoint over the TrackPad. I certainly do. Far less motion in the hands to use it. I've never noticed any sort of "grubbiness" from using my laptop. What are you doing to have grubby fingers to the apparent degree you seem to have?
haha don't ask :) in all seriousness I baby all my laptops so keep them clean but I have kids and well you can imagine what happens when a 4 year old manages to touch my laptop before I beat him off with a stick :) Don't get me wrong, I love thinkpads and have a new x1 carbon gen 9 on order which I hope to make my new work machine (as it has ports which neither the mac or nano do) but it is hard to deny that the macbook is a better buy for most people with its amazing battery life, lack of heat and fan noise and good all round package for less money than the nano!
I own mackbook and thinkpad. I will say that for programmers/writers trakcpoint is way better than touchpad! On macbook (and any other machine without trackpoint) when you're typing, every time you need to select, click something or scroll you need to take hand of the keys, scroll and put your hand back on keys. When you have trackpoint and you're typing every time you need to select, click something or scroll you just push the push the trackpoint and click button with a thumb while keeping fingers on keys, no need to take your hand of the keys. With trackpoint it's way faster, more ergonomic. And also when you need to slide down like 50 pages down: with touch pad you need swipe and swipe and swipe; with trackpoint you click 3rd button just below, and push trackpoint down to scroll. Dozens of movements on touchpad vs click and push on trackpoint - which requires less movements? I wish more companies, not just lenovo, would put trakcpoints into their machines. I will say: if you're a writer/programmer, give it a try to trackpoint for like a 3-4 weeks. At the beginning it might be awkward, but once you learn it, see how fast and comfortable it is - you will not want go back ;)
Honestly, fan noise and heat are overlooked by too many people. It bugs the living shit out of me to have a screaming fan. I keep trying to find reasons to get AWAY from mac and then there is always that question: “yeah, but fan noise?” 😔
Thanks again for the great comparison! You say the X1 nano is a Windows machine. In fact these thinkpads are the best Linux machines. You can install a full OpenSuse or Suse Linux in 10 minutes on these machines, without any change needed. I'm wondering if DaVinci runs faster on linux than on windows. At this price point lenovo could make a version with only trackpoint and a version with only trackpad. Now we get something in the middle.
Great work and thanks for the comparison. I am also deciding between a MacBook and the Nano. I would love to see how the Nano handles a Linux distro. Also, any experience using MS Office on the two? How does the MacBook handle the latest version of PowerPoint? Same on the Nano. From a business professional standpoint, we live and die by MS Office and I have always found it to be lagging on MacOS behind the Windows versions.
Buy the nano or wait for the next gen of macbooks. This gen is more of an experiment and a beta test for apple processors. Also, search for "m1 macbook won't turn on" on reddit or youtube. There are a lot of m1 macbooks that suffer from manufacturing issues and simply die( some say that it is because connecting usb c hubs that aren't supported but idk, I would bet on that). Stay away from m1 powered macbooks.
once you get used to the TP knob it is muuuuuch better quicker and especially much more ergonomic. you don't need to move your fingers from your home row.. Trackpad users are usually not power users. The thinkpad is a serious working machine and not a web developer machine. the worst thing about macbooks with m1 is you cannot install linux on it. so for development you just have to fix so many things and have so much overhead... urgs.. and yes the best keyboards are still found on the thinkpad
What volume setting did you have on RUclips when you did the speaker test? Not the system volume, but the volume setting on the RUclips website. That can make a difference.
100% on both. The mac speakers have surprised me by how quiet they are but I did move from a 16” MacBook Pro to the m1 and the 16” speakers are amazing
I have the M1 MBP. Best laptop I’ve ever used. Astonishing price to performance and ridiculously long battery life. Best of all, the fan never comes on.
Is nano capable of handling the below software? ( Is this suitable for progammers?) * VS Code * MS SQL Server * Visual Studio * Android Studio * Pycharm * Intelij
I am now looking at the x1 nano and the carbon, mostly cause durability and wanting to use the laptop everywhere. It’s hard to want to take the m1 out with its aluminium body, might just me but it’s discouraging and kinda heavy
That is very true. The thinkpads are definitely more rugged. Get the nano if ultra portability is what your after, but the carbon is a better device if you don’t care about the size
I've tested an M1 MBA and I felt scared carrying it around, I feel like the slightest bump or hit will dent or scuff the material. The x1 nano on the other hand, I've had for more than 2 years now and is very rugged. I've had it fall from my bed multiple times, gotten it bumped around and it's held up without any damage to the case or finish.
Personally I’ve always found the chassis of the Thinkpads just doesn’t feel as premium as the MacBook, Surface Laptop or Dell XPS. I really do like the clean symmetry of the other 3 with nothing but a polished logo in the centre but the Thinkpad just tacks on a few labels and element here and there. Same when you open the lid and have the exposed plastic bezels, just feels cheaper than it should be for this price range. I think the fact you only can get it in black doesn’t help it as just like the black Surface Laptop option, it gets pretty mucky with fingerprints after using it for a bit.
Hi, just curious. Which one has better performance the ThinkPad P15 (Xeon/64GB Ram/RTX A5000) or the new MacBook Pro (M1Max/10-core CPU, 32-core GPU/64GB unified memory)?
What is the thinkpad made from, magnesium or plastic? Some channels have done these tests on battery, not plugged in. Windows machines generally don’t run at full speed while on battery. It would have been interesting to see that here. AMD is being destroyed too.
I miss some information in your review. 1. many laptops can't deliver the same performance if they are not plugged in, would like to see that in the test. 2. what version of DaVinci Resolve are you running on the Mac? I would like to know if that's the M1 native version or not. 3. Would have liked you gave more info on the MacBook Air. Because its even cheaper en almost af powerful as the MacBook Pro.
Yes sorry, the video was getting so long I had to cut it down. 1. I plan of doing a bit more battery testing In a further video as a couple of people have asked. 2. I made sure to get the same version of resolve for both which was the latest beta (and native AS on Mac OS) 3. Unfortunately I only have the pro in the studio at the moment, I did an air vs pro video so you can see the difference in performance which actually is t a lot and I think the air is a better buy over the pro
Im an incoming freshmen, and im going to take photoshop. I heard macbooks have trouble woth photoshop apps. I also enjoy playing ios games such as Genshin Impact.. which doesnt even give you the wasd on the keyboard. Ive been using an old version of the thinkpad, and if i listen to all these tech reviewers drone on, ill never choose a laptop before school starts. I also heard there is a new version of the macbooks coming out in early 2022? Should i just wait instead of buying a nano or mac
haha I know of a few rumour channels that do nothing but drone on 😂 I have been using photoshop on my m1 MacBook with no issues but I am not the heaviest user. The m1 MacBook is a fantastic machine and well worth it especially for the price it can be picked up for. If you need windows then the nano or carbon gen 9 is also a good option but it is hard to justify when they are so much more expensive than the m1 Macs! Also you get access to some IOS apps now the m1 Macs are arm based but not all work. And lastly, we are expecting the m1x Macs this year but they will be a lot more expensive than the current Macs as they will replace the 16" and high end 13" intel Macs. Next year we should see the m2 MacBook Air but I doubt that will be until at least Q2. Hope this helps
wow.. awesome video! I'm waiting for my X1 Nano.. and maybe shouldn't have watched this video :) I did buy it refurbed off of Lenovo outlet for $850 i5/8gb but holy cow that macbook is pretty insane. I'll be happy with the Nano because I really need something as light as possible as well as with windows and I'm glad I don't video edit or there wouldn't be a contest there. great video.. new subscriber here!
hey man, nice vid. One suggestion though. When you compare the speakers you go up to 70% not 100%. I am not sure if this is the case with Nano, but in many laptops when going above a certain point or closer to 100% the sound is getting distorted so you have to go back to 80% or so. In the MacBooks I tested they tend to have the same clarity even when 100%. So this would be nice to test also. Because louder does not mean better . *Again I do not have the nano, but I guess that this is the case as well, since at 70% there are moments that the sound is a bit off I think. When at 50% the sound is much better and all levels highs and lows sound better. When at 70% the highs take over and there is almost no "bass" feeling in the sound. Again this is a personal opinion so other people may like how it sounds.
Thanks for the suggestion. I will give that a try next time. I was just a bit worried it would be too loud for viewers but I will hold the mic back a bit 👍
Wonderful comparison. It'd be great to see a similar comparison of the M1 Macbook, Air or Pro, to a similar form factor and priced AMD laptop with their latest chips (if there is one). I suspect that the M1 powered Mac would still dominate, but not by as much. Also, your review focuses on the heat on the keyboard, which is highly relevant if you keep the laptop on a table while using it. I have a MacBook Air that I use on my lap and sometimes find the bottom to be hot on my legs when it is under a heavy-ish load. Thank you!
Hi there, thanks for the comment, you are right I should have also mentioned the heat on the bottom, the m1 chips don’t get hot at all and the nano is pretty good but I will put it through some medium load on my lap and let you know. There are no 5000 series ultra book released yet but the second they do I will get them in. Had a ryzen t14 last year and it was amazing so looking forward to the new laptops.
Very good comparison: facts, tests, and when you present opinions/preferences, they are well founded and based on experiences. Thanks! I wish you had included M1 software comparability, Rosetta etc., though. As I have to use Windows, I like Dell’s XPS 9700 - except of the fact that it has an Intel chip. Therefore, I hope you will review the ThinkBook 16p gen 2 with its AMD chip when it comes out. (It probably takes too long to wait for an M1 equivalent Windows ARM laptop with full software comparability, which I would prefer as I assume ARM chips will outrival Intel and possibly AMD in the future even more.)
Sorry, you are right I should have talked about that. I had already covered the software in my 1 month m1 review so didn’t think to mention it again (doh sorry). I will certainly be getting any thinkpads with the new ryzen, I had the ryzen t14 last year and it amazed me so looking for to 5000 series
@@MashITTech No problem. Yesterday, I came across your channel for the first time. By now I've already had a look at the videos you mentioned and the one about the Surface Go 2. What really stands out is that you seem to have worked for years with both Mac and Windows devices and highlight the pros and cons in a convincing and honest manner. That really helps when it comes to decision making.
Thank you very much for this video. Would it be possible to have the same comprarison between the new macbook air with M1 chip vs Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Nano ? Because in my opinion this test is not fair as the macbook pro is the top of the food chain vs x1 nano which is for ultra portabiity due to its weight. Thank you very much in advance
Whilst I agree with you and can do that comparison, even the base air is as powerful as the pro in day to day use. It’s only extended use it slips behind the pro but would still spark the nano on performance
True. Have you tried the Mac VS? is that lacking like the Mac office? I use VS code and it is OK on the Mac but I only get time for light Dev work these days
@@MashITTech I can compile and debug .net core 3.1 excellenty on the mac VS, but I need to manage a database project in the same solution as well and there aren't any tools for that in mac VS that I could see. It's such a shame as I own an M1 air and an X1Carbon and much prefer the air overall. Hopefully Microsoft will take arm more seriously and make a native arm version of VS22 one day, or add SQL project support to mac VS
Very good video, really appreciate it! I hope in the future I could see other performances such as machine learning and others but it might extend the length of your video. However, this is perfect and I could decide what I should buy.
Thank you mate, I will try and maybe add another video later on more real world use. It is very hard trying to condense it into one video so may have to release them individually
is it justifiable to buy a windows laptop after the m1 Chip arrived? the macbooks perform so good for its price.. I really wanted to see the thinkpad outperform the m1, but these days seems impossible....
Intel are going to have to do some serious work to improve their chips in order to compete with apple silicon! I find the Ryzen's are a much better alternative to intel but nobody has put one in a high end chassis which is a real shame 😭
Very slightly less performance on long load (ie video rendering and cinebench) but otherwise the same as the pro. We did an air vs pro video if you are interested in the difference
Nothing compares to Macbook trackpad. I use Thinkpad for work, got several models throughout the years provided by the company, and I always need a Mouse to fully function. Macbook can live by itself. But I love how professional the thinkpad looks and feels specially on Client meetings 😅😊
I can't wait to buy an X1 Nano when it's 1/3 the price in 2 years
Sounds like you CAN wait.
Lenovo pricing is quite horribly marked-up, you'll typically find discounts of close to 50% when they go on sale.
Why not wait 10yrs...they'll be available for free
Used Thinkpads are the best laptops one can buy.
@@jhanschoo yes, but they are also priced beyond imagionable without discounts (I mean new ones), and those discounts are there all the time.
The M1 chip is so bloody impressive. Sure, it does have its weaknesses, but pound for pound (or watt for watt) it's just insanely quick.
I'd say in depth reviews like this are much more helpful
Great thank you. Was worried it was a bit long
Very nice video.
About the trackpad. The thinkpad users will say that it's very comfortable with smaller trackpad if you can use the red nipple and the middle button
...and I loathe the larger trackpads. Impossible to do long typing sessions without accidentally touching them.
Nano needs Ryzen.
Yes, extremely yes, that will be a monster ultrabook
I had always avoided macs in past because of poor price performance ratio, but now, apple wins where the pc usually shines. quite funny to even think about a mac is cheaper and perform better.
Same here. The new M chips are gonna make me buy a Mac now.
Well, if you could write the price down within 3 years in a business it might be the better value. But i'm so tired about throwing machines away before their end of time, just because they are not supported or something is not repairable. Then the price performance still isn't good if you think about all the problems of this total unrepairable M1 systems.
its using a modified phone chip what do you expect?
@@picanha694 Not sure what you mean by that. The expectation, previously, was that a "phone chip" wouldn't hold a candle to a "real PC". Now, we see that the M1 chip simply smokes intel's offerings in the same machine categories. We've only seen the lowest-end Macs with M1 chips so far, so it remains to be seen how the higher end models will fare. But I'm pretty certain the expectations have flipped completely.
Mac in Asia are superb with many cheap spare part, even the old decade mac still work for minimal task
I go for the nano. don't need the peak performance. It is lighter and has LTE/G5. so more versatile outdoor and on the road.
Too bad the 5G is pretty expensive to configure.
It’s stupidly overpriced and you can’t even do it yourself after receiving it as you won’t have the sim tray 😢
How would this nano compare with the Macbook air M1? I love the thinkpad's keyboard and trackpoint plus the fact that thinkpads are more resistent
I didn't know Gordon Ramsay reviewing laptop
Haha thanks, you are not the first person to say that. I do swear less though 😂
I didn't notice that until I saw your comment.. Definitely cannot unseen this now... 🤣🤣
lol, maybe a will start a cooking channel next :)
underrated!
He did mention cucumber.
Minor correction. It's not the ThinkPoint. It's the iconic TrackPoint...it's the only pointing device I'll use on a ThinkPad.
Lol I get it wrong every time! Thanks for the correction 👍
@@MashITTech No worries. Otherwise, good review. As you can tell, I am always going for the ThinkPad.
youve got to drop that old talisman. its from an era before trackpads!
It takes me 10 years of bootcamp to finally fully use macOS lmao but totally love it now once i actually truly give it a chance.
How's the Nano so far? Torn between G1 Nano and G9 X1C.
@@ShakamotoKyoujyu hows the battery life? I heard these things have dreadful battery life which only last up to 6 hours.
When it comes to the used market, the Nano starts to inch forward to being more desirable .. I purchased an i7 Nano 1st gen off ebay a couple months ago and it ended up costing me around 520 USD - a MBP of the same vintage and similarly specced is easily 2x that price
We should think about the resale value and longevity of desirability of ThinkPads when we evaluate them, for sure.
But the MBP is twice the computer!!
So you mean that the Thinkpads will be rapidly losing value after release? It seems the opposite to being "more desirable".
Iv'e never owned a Thinkpad but man do they look cool as well
(currently loving my m1 Air) 💻😌
I have a brand new p14s and it feels like if Apple brought the black macbook back and ran windows on it. The keyboard is even better than on macbooks, and the speakers/screen are far better than what I was expecting. I'm also considering getting one of the new macbooks later this year since those look fantastic as well.
Yes, I really want to try the P14 too! Plus looking forward to all this years models arriving
@@MashITTech x1 extreme thermal issues?
i do miss the macbook 12 form factor though, comparable to the x1 nano in terms of weight. I guess now it will make more sense if apple decide to put m1 into a 12 inch and it will be insanely nice.
The X1 Nano wins pretty much on all the small points, but the M1 delivers the knock-out punch with that processor performance and efficiency.
arnt they both about the same speed with M1 being slightly slower depending on the configuration? Apple M1 knocks out the Microsoft ARM based laptops though.
Looking the price M1 won
Noone seems to understand the beauty of having a trackpoint on a small 13 inch laptop it allows you to be closer to your laptop.. When the laptop is that small you need to have your face closer to the laptop to see the small text on a tiny screen. Using a touchpad would put you further from your laptop because your hand and arm needs space in front of the touchpad to use it. Therefore you will be further from your tiny screen. This is even more important if you lay in bed and use your laptop the laptop is forced very close to your face in this position however the touchpad would put you further away from your small screen. This is also the case if you use your laptop on your lap like in a car or on the train it is forced closer to you and it would be easier to use the trackpoint instead of the touchpad
Also having a narrow screen that is 16:10 aspect ratio is very important because it is easier for your hands to reach over the keyboard to find the center keys when it is very close to you. Because the body of the laptop is also narrow. If you ever tried using a 14 inch laptop that is very close to you it is hard to press the center keys on a keyboard.
Thats why in reality the Lenovo X1 nano is the best small laptop on the market right now for those that like to use a trackpoint.
What are you talking about? Who uses a trackpad when you have a touch screen and pen support...lol
@@RK-um9tu Touch screen and pen requires more mental and physical engagement with the screen. A track point is much more relaxing.
When Gordon Ramsay’s laptop hangs, he shouts: “it’s f..ing FROZEN ....! “
What makes this even funnier is that I just landed here from a Gordon video.
Macos is like dvorak, slight learning curve but feels much more “nature” to use
The weight of the nano is just crazy. 2 years ago I had the 12" Macbook for a month and with its 900 gr it just blew me away. It really felt like magic. And now Lenovo is offering a laptop with similar weight but a 13" screen. Just awesome. I'm still curious whether Apple will re-release the 12" with the M1 processor. Might also be an interesting product.
The intricacies of MacOS, hahaha
Yes. Mac os is so hard to use? Wait what - r u kidding?
can you improve the lighting ? your reviews are nice and if you can improve the lighting then it would be soo good !
We are always try to improve as we have only been doing this a few months. Any suggestions? The problem we face with lighting is how dark black laptops are, if we lower lighting we loose detail on black laptops! We are still experimenting though
@@MashITTech Softbox mounted on the ceiling, straight above the desk?
Thank you so much for the live benchmark with the power meter on the screen. You are the best compare reviewer EVER! I am forced to hit subscribe.
Thank you for the kind words 👍
Thank you mate. I tried to keep the length down but there is so much to cover and I could have covered more! but I am glad you found it useful :)
@@MashITTech Length was fine! I just watched it on and off between other things I was doing :)

Good interesting review!
Which one is better for backpackers? Which one is more reliable..?
They are both pretty rugged but the x1 is built to survive knocks and is easier to repair so would have to choose that one
the m1 doesnt actualy sleep ! its just like the iphone always on standby ! thats why then you open the lid its awake. also it still remains connected to wifi, and rings if you get a call on your iphone.
I do agree, Gary had stupidly left the air at his house so I used my pro
@@MashITTech but the review is still great :)
I agree with you but I did a t14 ryzen vs xps 9310 video and loads of people moaned that they weren’t comparable as the T14 was not a slim and light!
super nice video , enjoyed it! also is the X1 nano similar to X13?
Excellent video, old chap, thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done.
I love my Mac so much that I brought an X1 nano as the sidekick for my Mac.
Haha legend
I have one question..
which of the two, if its damaged, can still be repaired easily and didnt have to pay and arm or leg just to get repaired?
thank you & have a nice day
I think I know the answer to this one :)
I am lucky enough to have both a windows and a mac (I need both for development) but I wish I could make a hybrid m1 mac with a thinkpad keyboard and matte screen :)
Looking forward to the Gen 9 carbon to be released as I really want to review that soon
@@MashITTech Wish that too, that would be fantastic.
Heard rumor that X1 will come with 16 by 10 ratio, can't wait to see one.
Yes, the 9th gen does and they have redesigned the cooling system 👍
this is how real tech review should look like!
Thank you for the kind words
Except you can buy 2 Macbok airs for the price of 1 thinkpa but it doesnt have double the features. That makes it dificult to opt for the thinkpad. And a macbook air can beat the performance of the thinkpad. I wish it couldnt. But it does. Even interms of battery life.
thinkpads are interesting only with a discount
thinkpads are *often* on sale... macbook, never, right ?
I bought a X1 Carbon 7 online, with 35% discount
I'm happy with it, but I would not have bought it at full price
I also do a lot of development and prefer the Mac in this regards in most cases but prefer a windows machine when it comes to systems support.
mac isnt linux based its bsd based lol
You may compare those but Windows is the one makes X1 Nano a trash compared to M1 MBP. I have both 16 MacBook Pro and X1 but X1 run hot, louder and runs slower in docker image works.
I think people need to understand that many of us that are Thinkpad users prefer the TrackPoint over the TrackPad. I certainly do. Far less motion in the hands to use it. I've never noticed any sort of "grubbiness" from using my laptop. What are you doing to have grubby fingers to the apparent degree you seem to have?
haha don't ask :) in all seriousness I baby all my laptops so keep them clean but I have kids and well you can imagine what happens when a 4 year old manages to touch my laptop before I beat him off with a stick :)
Don't get me wrong, I love thinkpads and have a new x1 carbon gen 9 on order which I hope to make my new work machine (as it has ports which neither the mac or nano do) but it is hard to deny that the macbook is a better buy for most people with its amazing battery life, lack of heat and fan noise and good all round package for less money than the nano!
I'd love to see the X1 Nano with Ryzen processor.
never happens. Ryzens on idle require a lot more battery power than modern intel cpus
wow i cant believe the speakers are way louder on the X1 Nano
same, I wonder if mic position affected this?
Mostly midrange. You could hear that in the demo.
At the beginning it might be awkward, but once you learn it, see how fast and comfortable it is - you will not want go back ;)
you misspelt Lenovo Lenono in the description, which is hilarious
Lol thank you. I let Gary write the description, I will go and sack him now 😂
Honestly, fan noise and heat are overlooked by too many people. It bugs the living shit out of me to have a screaming fan. I keep trying to find reasons to get AWAY from mac and then there is always that question: “yeah, but fan noise?” 😔
Yeah, that is true, you can't beat the apple silicon Macs if you want a silent laptop
Will you make a in-depth video of windows 11 and mac os side by side..
that sounds like a great idea for a video! leave it with me and thanks 👍
Ohoi~then I'll be waiting for that.. ╹▽╹
You are absolutely right! I am planning on testing Linux when I get the chance
Hi! Great news! Do you know, are all of components of Nano working properly? I mean - fingerprint, webcam under Suse or OpenSuse
No one decides between Windows laptops and MBs. That is why MBs only have 8% global market share...
Spoiler! Macbook is cheaper, and they even perform better
lol 2020 is indeed a weird year
@Iceman0929 mac is best
@Iceman0929 use bootcamp that comes with mac
M1 macs run on ARM architecture so you will not be able to run bootcamp. Just a heads up
@Iceman0929 yes
once you get used to the TP knob it is muuuuuch better quicker and especially much more ergonomic. you don't need to move your fingers from your home row..

I will certainly try but we have just had a massive batch of Dell & Apple products arrive which we will need to get through first
@@MashITTech no worries! Looking forward to all your upcoming content! I already bought the Nano and am fully satisfied with it anyways haha
This is an amazing comparison video
Thank you for the kind words
8 core vs 8 core please.
Amazing review!! Thanks for doing the comprehensive analysis!
No problem, glad you enjoyed it :)
I have both laptops and the nano speakers are definitely not louder...
Good to hear the thinkpad keyboard is better
Bezels arent plastic?
Also really try dropping your MacBook and then the Thinkpad and see which one still works...
Hi, just curious. Which one has better performance the ThinkPad P15 (Xeon/64GB Ram/RTX A5000) or the new MacBook Pro (M1Max/10-core CPU, 32-core GPU/64GB unified memory)?
That is tough but I think a lot will depend on the workloads. At the moment my money is on the Mac but mine don’t arrive until Tuesday
What is the thinkpad made from, magnesium or plastic? Some channels have done these tests on battery, not plugged in. Windows machines generally don’t run at full speed while on battery. It would have been interesting to see that here.
AMD is being destroyed too.
Hello - Any recommendations for USBC external adaptor for X1 nano please ( connect an exterrnal monitor / mouse / keyboard ) .
2. I made sure to get the same version of resolve for both which was the latest beta (and native AS on Mac OS)
3. Unfortunately I only have the pro in the studio at the moment, I did an air vs pro video so you can see the difference in performance which actually is t a lot and I think the air is a better buy over the pro

@@MashITTech thank you for the information. I enjoyed the content.
Awesome video, honest like not so many others on the web.
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words
wow.. awesome video! I'm waiting for my X1 Nano.. and maybe shouldn't have watched this video :) I did buy it refurbed off of Lenovo outlet for $850 i5/8gb but holy cow that macbook is pretty insane. I'll be happy with the Nano because I really need something as light as possible as well as with windows and I'm glad I don't video edit or there wouldn't be a contest there. great video.. new subscriber here!
never ever understood the small touch pad problem...
it doesn't bother me either but needs to be mentioned when you compare them.
I liked the speaker quality of nano very much
Yes I was really surprised how good the speakers sounded!
M1 would be my choice but it doesn’t have the red track point nipple. Therefore choice is X1
hey man, nice vid.
@@MashITTech If there was a Ryzen version of the X1 Nano I would pick it up in a heartbeat.
I wonder how the M1 would compare with Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 9.
I will be comparing them next week when it arrives 👍
@@MashITTech OK great stuff. Thinkpad X1 Carbon seems over priced.
I managed to get it for a lot less than the nano! I think you need to wait for discount vouchers
@@MashITTech Yes will wait.
can you add more the result comparison by smaill-picture video, its will be more easy watching to viewer. Tks a lot !
Yes sure, this is something we are working on for future videos
Compatibility is the problem. As a engineering student, I have to choose a windows laptop. What a shame
What type of engineering? I'm software engineer and is amazing all with the MacBook m1 pro.
Greeeat video, thanks for making this comparison 😉
Thank you very much for this video. Would it be possible to have the same comprarison between the new macbook air with M1 chip vs Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Nano ? Because in my opinion this test is not fair as the macbook pro is the top of the food chain vs x1 nano which is for ultra portabiity due to its weight. Thank you very much in advance
Whilst I agree with you and can do that comparison, even the base air is as powerful as the pro in day to day use. It’s only extended use it slips behind the pro but would still spark the nano on performance
This isn’t really a “Pro” model. The upcoming 14” and 16” models will be the real pro models.
Sadly there's no way to run windows visual studio under a VM officially and with good performance
Macbook is the best for multimedia, thinkpad is the best for business IMO. When you travel a lot, you will need something very light like the Nano
What about the prices difference?
Is the performance going to be the same for the M1 MacBook Air? I have the Air.
Very slightly less performance on long load (ie video rendering and cinebench) but otherwise the same as the pro. We did an air vs pro video if you are interested in the difference
Thanks, I'll check it out.
Just think the M1 is running nearly at 1/2 the clock speed of the Thinkpad and yet performs this well.
Yes it’s crazy, and at such low wattage too! Can’t wait for the m1x in the 16”
nice review!
Thank you
Nothing compares to Macbook trackpad. I use Thinkpad for work, got several models throughout the years provided by the company, and I always need a Mouse to fully function. Macbook can live by itself. But I love how professional the thinkpad looks and feels specially on Client meetings 😅😊
Try using the TrackPoint. It was a game changer for me and once I learned how to use it I can’t imagine buying a laptop without one.
Thinkpad trackpoint and i3wm on Linux beats any sort of trackpad
