I appreciate the shoutout. A technician is supposed to be dropping by tomorrow so hopefully soon we’ll have a working system here. Based off what I’ve heard from others and what the people from Lenovo support said I most likely have a faulty CPU or faulty RAM module. Looking forward to getting mine back up and running!
Pity about the camera. These days with video conferencing, a nice camera, speakers, and mic are vital. For most people, the speed issue was solved with SSD's, and trackpads and screens have improved. So camera, speakers, and mic are the remaining items on the to-do list.
That keyboard design was used in a lot of the X series machines, however even the keyboard used in the earlier X200/201/220 had a very nice feel. Warning - useless dribble follows: I love the track-point. I cut my laptop teeth on the late 90's Toshiba Tecra machines which had only a track-point. I hate track-pads and on my Lenovos that have both I disable the track-pad. On other machines that only have track-pad, I use a wireless mouse.
I have a soft spot for the early ThinkPad keyboards, they were something special. The TrackPoint once mastered is preferred by many I think. The trick is the mastery.
It really is a great machine if you are a match for it. It certainly isn't the "everyone" machine like some of its family members but if it does the job for you, I think you'd be hard pressed to find many choices that are better.
Love my Nano. I do find the the keyboard to be very good if not a little cramped. I find the typing experience to be better on the larger ThinkPad models. Thanks for the two month update!
Excellent video, glad that I found this. I like the way you reviewed in a perspective of daily use instead of comparing the numbers. I have one question about this machine. Does it lose much battery when in sleep mode overnight? like when the lid is closed but the power is not turned off.
Thanks, I'm glad you found it useful. It can lose a few percent if it is doing since updates outside of use hours depending on how the power plan is configured. Nothing major but for best results I'd power it off if I wanted every last percent.
Thanks for posting an indepth review - looks like a good machine that i am considering to buy. Can you comment on if the X1 nano will be able to support dual 4k external monitors? I will be using a thunderbolt hub for the configuration. Info on Lenovo's website is kinda fuzzy...
See my previous video on the Nano, in the description I post a detailed article with all the resolutions it can drive and at what rates. I'm mobile right now so I can't post the link directly.
@@LaptopRetrospective Thanks for the reply, in your previous review you were driving 4 displays (including laptop) - but your external monitors were 1080p. My question is slightly different - I want to drive only 2 external displays - but at a higher resolution of 4k. Any thoughts?
Thank you for at great review after 2 months use with your experiences. Question: looking into all available Lenovo models buying - will you still recommend the X1 Nano if you´re looking for mobility?
It's nice how lenovo fixed some of the key issues with Thinkpads with the X1 Nano, however I wish they brought these to the table sooner and made these remedies available on other lines of Thinkpads. Sound and display are big factors for a purchasing decision for me. It's sad how on Thinkpads it wasn't until 2015 with the T460 you could order 300 nit panels on a non "s" model and forever the sound on thinkpads was never great :( I wish the lines were structured better, sure the X1 is the prized line since it has the most features but it gets basically what makes a better laptop, like 16:10, better speakers, robust designs, etc... and since many other competitors (at least now they do) have these qualities it kinda takes away from the value of these machines.
Less reflective than the Surface Book 2, but still glossy. In the shot of that picture on the screen you can see a reflection of the overhead lights but it doesn't make it unreadable.
I haven't used Zoom for conference calls on this yet. It is far more resource efficient than Google Meets. That being said, those M1 chips sip battery.
I'm trying to ascertain what might work. I thought I had it figured out but the drive didn't fit even though it was the right size and worked in previous Carbons.
Hi, great review. I have the X1 nano non-touch matte display and happy with it. I’m looking to get a second X1 nano but with the touch display. Is the X1 nano touch display version similar to the normal glossy (ie shiny/reflective) that you see in a lot of laptop/tablets? My requirement for a screen should me a matte display. Thanks
I've done several videos on the Nano so you can see for yourself how reflective it is 😁. I believe both according to the build sheet have a matte display and it certainly doesn't feel/look as glossy as others I've used.
I go into detail on this in an earlier update if you want the details but I rarely hear the fan at all. Max volume is 50dB when I push it. Never had it randomly.
if u can buy it all over again, would you still get the touchscreen? i want the carbon weave but it’s only touchscreen but i want matte. If the touchscreen is better then i’d get that.
I have no regrets. The weave looks good, hides fingerprints better and the touchscreen is occasionally handy. It also holds its value. The Gen 2 would be my go to with the better camera and CPUs.
I was debating between this and the x1 carbon gen9 so much and then the offers on Lenovo's website just expired. Missing a type-A port is still a huge problem for me and I'm rather sad that I have to pass this machine by. Damn it, if only they had put a 2K resolution screen in the x1 carbon gen9...
X1 nano. x13s. Z13. Z16 they have a hidden cost. You need to purchase an accident protection. screen not replaceable. It comes as $500-1000 assembly. It should not be named Thinkpad. Great notebook overwise. I just got hinges loose on the X13s and should send to depot repair. I was not able to tight screws, it sealed under plastic. Need to break it off and void warranties. I checked X1 nano, have same "philosophy"
Going to have to disagree that it shouldn't be called a ThinkPad. It has stood up very well over the years I've owned it. Whether the accidental protection is a "hidden cost" is up to the purchaser and once on the used market, less relevant. It is a thin, light and expensive machine, that definitely has drawbacks and cost to fix will be one of them. Can't comment on loose hinges, no issues here.
How sturdy is the x1 nano? I have the x270 but I'd love to upgrade to x1 nano. Is it as sturdy as an x230 for example? I know Lenovo does military tests on their products. But not so sure how tough this tiny thin Ultrabook is....
It's quite tough, especially for it's size. The Nano feels rock solid, has those high grade tests you mentioned backing it up and I don't give mine any special treatment. Comparing it to the X230 which is essentially twice as thick could be misleading though.
@@LaptopRetrospective thank you for replying!. Glad to hear it feels solid. Most modern laptops are sacrificing robustness and durability for weight. But its a laptop. You're bound to drop it or hit it somewhere. It's just a matter of when :)
I am scared of the upside open speaker grills on these new laptops. Do they collect dust and small particles inside ? If so, then that's going to be a mess ,as time goes by..

Not sure what Lenovo's camera department is smoking these days, a 0.9MP camera is far worse than pathetic. Hope Lenovo fixes this one important issue in their Gen 2 release.....

One cycle is when 100% charge has been depleted. So if you use your laptop from 100 to 80% a total of 5 times, that equals 100% and one cycle.

Don't use the laptop as much unplugged? The less it's discharged, the less it would need to be charged.
