  • In response to requests, these are my tips on how to care for my very fussy Dieffenbachia aka Dumb Cane plant. Does your dieffenbachia have yellow leaves???
    Unfortunately, there is a barky dog in the background throughout and although I muted a lot of it, you can still hear some. I apologize if it's too distracting, but I only had one morning to film this before I left for vacation.... #citylife
    Thanks for watching! Please give this video a thumbs up if you found it helpful or fun and subscribe so you won’t miss my next one!! XOXO, Cheryl

    What a coincidence! I just peeked over at my dumb cane to see how it was doing seconds before i saw you had a new video up! i was concerned because her leaves were droopy for a few days. I used my water meter and it kept showing the soil was quite most. So i wiped the leaves down, moved to area where there's great late sunlight, nothing! So last night i took to the sink, watered and lightly fertilized with 10-10-10 and fish emulsion added to fresh rain water and voila! It's now standing nice and perky! So i realize now if leaves are droopy and not turning yellow or brown it might need water in spite of the water meter reading. Thanks for sharing!

      Hi Dee Diane! Thank you for sharing that! Mine got too dry last week while I was on vacation and I came home to several yellow leaves! Gave it a good watering and it's looking fine again. They really do need a lot of water.

      My plant was limp and became more limp over course of a week. I watered it after realizing it was very dry. I Watered it to where the water came out the bottom of the pot. However it’s been about 36 hours now and it’s still limp. Was going to attach the branches to bamboo sticks. Any other suggestions? I don’t know what this 10 10 10 item is you’re talking about so please advise

      Thank you Kimberly! When the plant started to decline earlier this year I was frustrated too because I couldn't find anything about care. I finally found a couple of garden blogs that had some helpful info and the rest was trial and error. Thanks for subbing and I will definitely incorporate more plant care videos in the future. Just don't spend too much money on one, just in case, LOL! Actually, I think they are pretty hardy, they just need the right environment to look their best. Good luck and let me know if you do get one... xoxo Cheryl

    I'm so glad I found your video! I have bought 2 in the last month from Lowe's, the first one I repotted and it is looking a hot mess. Pretty much all of the leaves have fallen off or have turned almost white. The second one is still in the original pot and is doing okay. They are much bigger than the ones you have. I am determined to bring the first one back to life. Thanks for the tips!

    • @FreeRangeDiva
      @FreeRangeDiva  4 года назад

      Hello Stacey! Congrats on the new plants!! I think the larger ones are more stable than the smaller varieties I have. Although, at this time of year I notice mine has shed a lot of its growth from the summer and tiny new leaves are growing in at the base. Make sure to check for pests and keep it warm and away from drafts. They are quite hardy and I expect your one will bounce back in no time!! Have a wonderful day... xo Cheryl

I'd love to see how you're styling your plants and incorporating them into your decor. I know you did a few DIYs a few months ago so I would love to see how those got incorporated too! Free Range Diva ha ha ha! Cheryl I really need to crack down and buy some shelving and styling materials as well not much change has happened because I spent all of my fun money on plants not even joking🤷‍♀️😂 I told my husband Jeff next month I’m going to start purchasing the shelving units I’m putting in my living room and kitchen. The room where I like to do a lot of my filming also needs new shelves I’m hoping maybe I can stop by Goodwill and refinish some furniture pieces for cheaper. Furniture is no joke on how expensive they can get! I will definitely do an update!😜💕

      @@illumlife588 Sometimes you can find awesome stuff at Goodwill. I found my desk at a Goodwill in NYC almost 20 years ago and, after SEVERAL moves, it still looks great because it's made of real wood instead of pressboard.

It appears the young leaves stay green but the older leaves turn yellow. I keep getting new growth but in turn older leaves dying. The soil is draining properly. I moved her to my kitchen nook which is warmer and sunny (indirect). She was fed about a month ago. I'll have to remember to keep her on the moist side😉

      Hello! As long as leaves are growing, that's a good sign. Once you find that "perfect spot" it should settle down. Mine did not lose a leaf during the entire growing season. But a few weeks ago it shed a lot of that older growth, although there are still new leaves coming in. Recently the weather turned really hot and dry and I missed a watering - it was literally drooping. But I watered it really thoroughly and so far, no leaves have yellowed... fingers crossed :-)

    Hi- I'm not sure if you'll read this so long after releasing the video, but I feel the need to leave a comment just in case you do. First, I want to say that you have such a beautiful & calming presence & that you remind me of an angel. I was drawn into this video by the title but I instantly got a good feeling about you. That doesn't happen very often for me so I just wanted to tell you. Secondly- thank you SO MUCH for this video. I am a hard core plant lover & owner. I have (way too) many different varieties/species of plants & have somehow managed to have great success w/ almost all of them over the years. The exception? The beautiful & mystifying dieffenbachia. I have had at least 5 & zero luck with ANY of them. I watched all the care videos, I did my research on blogs & websites, & each time I decided to try again with a new 1, I thought "this time will be better", but.. it never was. Not only did most of the leaves quickly yellow then die, but I've tried propagating so many cuttings- only 1 ever rooted & quickly died once I transferred it to soil. I'm so frustrated by the issues I have with these plants but besides really wanting them because of how gorgeous they are, i feel compelled to keep trying until I (hopefully one day) have success. So, in the spirit of optimism, I bought another 1 yesterday. It's big & full & stunning but I'm already assuming that it will quickly decline. Since making this one, I'm curious to know if you've maybe discovered any additional tips, tricks or info about it while you've been maintaining it after the rescue. And if so, I'm wondering if you'd possibly consider making a follow up video? Either way though, I thank you again. Maybe I'll be able to keep my new dieffenbachia alive & at least somewhat well by following your advice & experience. It's very kind of you to share this info with us & I made sure to subscribe. If you do see this, I'm so sorry about leaving a novel sized comment like this, I just couldn't help myself. Thank you again so much!

      Hi Jasmine! Thanks so much for those kind words and I'm so glad you found this video helpful. There is a blog I read by the owner of a greenhouse and one of the only plants he will not stock is... yep, the dieffenbachia Camille. He feels it's not worth it because once it's transferred out of the optimal conditions of the greenhouse it starts to decline. As this winter approached both my dieffs began losing leaves until they were both almost bald within 2 weeks. I treated for pests, adjusted feeding and watering but they just went downhill together. I replanted the larger one in a larger pot and it has started pushing out a few new leaves so I'm keeping a close eye on it until spring. If it hangs on, I plan to cut back the stalks to see if it will take off again. The smaller, I just threw out :-) I'm so glad you left this comment! Since you've had so much experience w/ it, do you have any idea what might have gone wrong? Had both about 2 years and both were doing great until suddenly they weren't. Also they were in 2 different parts of the house. Haha, I know you wanted tips and here I am asking you for advice! xo Cheryl

      Unfortunately, drooping leaves can be a sign of not enough water, or too much water. If it's not drying out too much, it may need fertilizing. Try a low dose, organic fertilizer. Also brown tips are usually due to low humidity. HTH

      The leaves could yellow if you water too much or too little. Check the soil - if it's still moist half way down, don't water it - wait until it feels dry. This plant doesn't need direct sun - medium to bright light is fine. Also, place it on a pebble tray to keep humidity up and mist occasionally. Finally, it could just be losing a few leaves because they are older or the season is changing, and that's normal. Good luck!

    Good morning.
    I am a man who loves exotic decorative plants through the leaves. I live in a block, on the 6/12 floor. My apartment has 4 rooms, where I live with about 200 plants. They are my best friends ... green friends. Some, the "little ones" sit on a small terrace (2/5 m) closed with windows, which I call "greenhouse". But other (larger) plants are in all rooms, in groups (except the bathroom, where there is no natural light).
    OK, I've been this hobby since I was 16 years old (1974). The first plants in my "collection" were cacti and other succulent plants (Aloes, Agave, Lithops etc). But when their number reached 1600, I had to rent a truck, to move them into a real greenhouse of one my girl friend, with all the necessary facilities. And this is not only because of the space, but because two children have appeared in my house. And for them, the cacti were very dangerous.
    Well, two years ago, a friend of mine donated a beautiful plant from India, a Dieffenbachia "amoena", and told me that it is a "special" plant growing rapidly. And indeed, from 40 cm, it is now 2.5 m. And soon, it will reach the ceiling, 3 m high. She has no kids yet. So ... I will have to cut the stem of the plant. And it's my pity to cut it. She will suffer great pain. She'll cry (snif snif). Anyway, I just ask: my love plant will make branches (like a tree, as Ficus)?
    Similarly, I have a great Monstera deliciosa, 13 years old.

I'll fertilize in the winter if I see it growing new leaves, but I'm in southern calif. where it's warm all year. That's about it. It flowers in the spring and fall. HTH!

Pretty neat. so i want to keep them alive. i think the lembah, actually makes water taste sweet.. whatever that means, (that will ahve to be experienced first hand i guess.

    Thanks for the video. My dumb cane plant is not doing so great. The leaves are curling up and shriveling. Could it be that I let it get too dry before watering? Or maybe it's drying out because I use the AC at night? Also, should you keep this plant away from the window?

    • @FreeRangeDiva
      @FreeRangeDiva  2 года назад

      hi Fred, do you use a moisture meter to check how dry the soil is? It can really help to figure out how often & how deep to water. Especially now, w/ the seasons changing (going from heater to AC) watering needs will vary. Mine didn't mind a little direct light, but the plant will do just fine in indirect. Past tense because unfortunately mine were right next to each and got a bacteria infection that literally turned the leaves yellow overnight. By the time I figured out what it was, it was too late...🙁 If it doesn't improve soon, take one of the dead leaves to your local nursery to find out if it's pests or a disease.

      I wouldn't make any more changes right now. Just give it some time to settle in and adjust to it's new surroundings.

    Can you please please do a video showing how to prune or pintch the top of the plant to promote bottom growth. It’s my first one and not many videos of showing how it’s done.

    • @FreeRangeDiva

      Andrea, sadly my diff succumbed to a bacterial infection during the winter. Both of them were right next to each other and both died off at the same time. Literally, all the leaves died at once, so by the time I realized what was going on, it was too late to save the plant.

    I keep my plant in water. I had problems with it dying or not doing so well. Now that it lives in water, it’s doing better. The leaves stay a light green and lots of baby growth near the roots. I would like to give it food. I tried the crystal miracle grow and that turned both the plant and water green with lots of algae.
    Any ideas?

    Please help! I’ve had my plant for many years. The mother plant had large beautiful leaves. Over the years I’ve made cuttings of the plant and now the leaves are growing much smaller. I don’t know if the lighting in the room is the main reason or if it’s been cut so many times that the plant leaves are changing. Has this happened to anyone else?

    • @FreeRangeDiva
      @FreeRangeDiva  5 лет назад

      Hello. Usually smaller leaves are an indication of low light. I'm assuming you've checked for pests but you may want to take a close look at the root system to make sure they are healthy and that there isn't an infestation of something. If not, the plant may just need more light or fertilizer. HTH and keep me posted.

    How far in do you put the moisture meter?

    • @FreeRangeDiva
      @FreeRangeDiva  4 года назад

      Almost all the way down to the bottom. And I put it in a couple of different spots because the soil can hold moisture unevenly.

      I have a bottle of a fungicide that I got from the garden center called Bonide Copper Fungicide. You can also get it online. In the meantime, make sure to cut that leaf off before it spreads to the other leaves. That should stop it, and make sure the plant is getting good air flow so the leaves don't stay wet too long. Misting can cause fungus to grow when there isn't enough air flow around the plant.
