I love the way you explained about the "sky view" I learned a lot.
thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Connecting the "sky view" with detailed light meter readings was the most eye-opening connection for my houseplant journey!
When Darryl demonstrated with his fisheye cam attachment in his other videos, I was like, "omg! I wanna try that too so I can better understand my plants!"
As a new plant mom who has/had the brownest thumb ever lol I’ve been pouring over YT videos abt specific plant care and I must say, yours is one of my favorites specifically bc of the language you use. I’m all about precision of language; instead of just assuming the audience knows what you’re talking about and speaking in vague generalities. So thank you 😊
Just got two dieffenbachias today, I’m so excited to watch them grow 💚💚
this brings me so much comfort! I thought I killed my dumb cane because the bottom leaves are yellowing. Now I understand that its just the older leaves falling off. I have it near my window with the best indirect light coming through and have watered it when I feel the soil is partially moist, letting the water drain from the drainage holes. so I think its just growing up! lol thank you for the tips!
Hi! The same thing started happening to my dieffenbachia and I'm a bit worried! Is your plant still doing ok?
This was an absolutely fantastic video. It was so clear and easy to understand and explained in much more detail than any other plant care video that I've ever seen just how exactly plant issues should be analyzed. Thank you so much! I will be a new subscriber for sure, and I hope you continue to post more detailed videos such as this one with true examples of plants & their issues! 🙂💚🌿
Stumbled upon your video because I was searching for help with my dieffenbachia. Thank you so much for your advice and perspective! Gave me a bit of peace of mind realizing how the grow in the wild 😅 you’ve got a new subscriber!
Just saw you for the first time and love how you answer the question they are very relatable and help me know where to place plants and not worry too much. Thanks
Great advice; I woke up a bit paniced this morning thinking i was killing my dumb cane... You have made me feel better; I think its just letting go of old leaves. As the new smaller leaves coming in are still nice bright green.
Totally agree with you of how the way you treated your own house plants , because I did lots of mistake the way I look after my own house plants andcend up killing some of my plant , but again thanks God I learned my own mistake ,
Hello! If you’re looking at this your dieffenbachia camille is probably yellowing. Mine was pretty much dead the first time I saw this video, and since then I’ve changed EVERYTHING I could.
I moved my camille but I noticed she didn’t like that, so I moved her back to her original place. (Underneath a ceiling window, the light is indirect because it’s covered with a decorative coffee bag.)
I started misting and spraying my camille at LEAST twice a day. Just the leaves, I noticed in a matter of days how beautiful she got. She’s now full of new growth and the new leaves tend to open up very quickly with the regular sprays.
I try to always save up rain water for my plants, they love it. I water my camille once every week or whenever I feel the soil a bit too dry. Spraying and misting truly saved my plant. You just need to be regular with it.
Also, I would like to point out that dieffenbachias tend to shed their lower leaves often, that’s completely normal. That means they’re growing.
Thank you for this!
Thank you. This info really usefull since my diffenbachia is also yellowing.
Thank you
Wow! Your explanation of "what my plant sees" is fantastic!
Wow, what a great, informative video. Now I gotta make time and binge watch all your videos lol.
I watch so many RUclips plant channels, but this is by far the most helpful! Thank you so much
I was in the process of commenting exactly this, so I'll just leave a like instead
This was very useful in regards for us viewers know to logically adapt to our plants
My diffenbachia was doing great until I decided to water it THOROUGHLY!! Now it’s drooping and yellowing. Overwatering definitely does that 😩 I wished this video showed how to help it if that happens
Thank you so so much!! I searched some photos online of mature and 6ft+ dumb canes and they all lost their lower leaves! This makes me feel so much better since I see new leaves from the top of my plant. Thank you!
Very helpful. Thank you
anyone hear that high pitch monosound?
Yes! I thought it was just me lol.
Me too its pretty bad
Literally unwatchable...
its killing me :(((
I thought sth was wrong with my ear :')
This video is great, mindset change of looking after my plants. Thank you, new subbie :)
Probably a great video, but you do unfortunately have a high pitch noise in your video. I checked with different audio outlets of mine, so I must be your camera, microphone etc.
I'm so glad I came across your channel and book. I put my never-blooming peace lily beside an eastern window after watching your videos, and within a month it pushed out 6 flowers!! My peace lily thanks you :D
I have mine near a north facing window and no flowers.....unfortunately, I do not have any eas facing but plenty of west facing windows
I once heard a houseplant's life cycle described as "they ome from the garden of Eden where all the conditions are perfect, then when you bring them home they get plopped into purgatory, struggle for months, then get tossed into the abyss once they're not pretty enough."
Pleaseee do a video on what soil mixtures you use for your house plants!!
Great explanation on care and light! Thanks so much!
As a beginner, this video was very insightful, thank you!
This was a really helpful video. Can't wait to see more! 😊
Thank you. I always worried about the brown tips on my peace lily but now looking at it it’s pretty healthy.
Thank you
such a great video, thank you for this!
What about artificial light? I've found lower light plants, such as my Maranta, Agleonema and Pothos situated under typical table lamps with traditional 2700K bulbs, grow and push new growth inspite of their lack of view of the natural sky....how does artificial light compare to natural light and do u know of other varieties that do well under these circumstances.
Artificial light will be the topic of many videos to come! But to answer the question: a view of purely sky but not sun yields anywhere from 100 to 800 foot-candles, depending heavily on the visible angle of sky from the point of measurement. Artificial lights, being much weaker than the sun but having the luxury of controlling their position and how long they are on, can measure in at the range of 100-800 foot-candles - this time, heavily depending on the distance from the light source. Since "low light plants" can grow nicely with 100-800 foot-candles (lasting about 6--8 hours), any lights that produce that range of intensity can be used to grow "low light" plants. Further topics that will be discussed: grow lights vs regular lights - is there any difference?
Thanks for this video and happy to learn from you. I was looking for this video for a long time to save my yellowing dumb cane plant. Sure I am going to follow your advise and will check the progress. I am following you on Instagram.
Thank you.
I've had to make sure their water is a little warm. That worked wonders.
I have mine by the windows with blue skies... it still dying and turning yellow... and has some tiny black bugs on its 🍃 the sunlight shine on the plant for only a few hours of the day... but also they have been like this since I traveled for a month and my neighbor came to water them ONLY once... she said she came more but I have a camera at home so I know she did NOT... but anyways I come home and all my plants looked dead. I water once a week and my home temp is at 72 to 70 a week.
Hi, my Dieffenbachia is living in my piano room in the middle of two windows bright indirect light. The only problem I have is my plant does not like to be watered when it is dry two or there inches down. If I water at this point it will get root rot because this is my second plant....:) This one tends to like it dry before watering does this sound normal? So far it is going good besides a few leaves yellowing and me cutting them off. Still quite full.
Super thankful for this video. My dieffenbachia is on a constant leaf rotation. She does give me new growth at the bottom to feed my need to be a good plant mama. Seeing the plant at the botanical garden you went to is encouraging to know what a healthy dieffenbachia can look like.
You're welcome! I want people to stop judging plants with such narrow parameters of "healthy/happy" :)
I have a Dieffenbachia and keep there soil evenly damp and now I have a plant full of fungus gnats 😡🤦🏽♀️
I’ve had this issue with my peace lily and ended up throwing it out but I think it was deeper issue such as root rot...
Bottom watering and a moisture meter will help with your problem
My plant was very happy and then I repotted her in different soil and then she became very sad and yallow
Hi can you please help me ? I change my lily to a new pot but leaves are droopy and a little weak /jelly texture like only in some leaves I don’t know what to do ? Please help me ? Thanks
Great video lots of great info 👍thankyou!
This was awesome!!!
Wanted to watch this video as I much enjoy this content but there is a high frequency buzz that seems to overtake the audio.
Thanks for sharing. Helped me improve. Take care
Hey man, just to let you know, there's a really high pitched frequency playing alongside your audio... you have some very helpful points ad good videos but I can't wat h this one without getting a headache, keep it up though, happy growing :)
For anyone else struggling with this, try putting s bit of cloth or a t-shirt over ur speaker(s) to dampen the frequency. Just found this out
I was thinking the same. I can't get past the noise. I fast forward to see if it ever stopped.
Help! So I’ve noticed that mine have become soggy where there is new growth
wonderful video! 🙏 thank you
My dieffenbachia had yellowing leaves but I checked her and she had some black flies on it. Has been treated already but I do get the idea you've mentioned, I'll stop worrying for it from now on. :)
My gorgeous diefenbachia has leaves yellowing at an alarming rate! Any clear ish ideas of what is going on? Too much water? Not enough ?
Thank you so much.. that was helpful! I just subscribed to your channel 🎉
RUclips listening to me... haha. I just had a convo about these 2 plants and these 2 problems.... got home and BAM suggested. Haha
You explainatoon was awesome thank u
please help:my dieffenbachia is yellowing and seems weak. i have a balcony. should i just buy one of these mini greenhouses on amazon and put my plant out there during the day? do i want the clear one or the green one. any expert advice would be great.
my dieffenbachia has a new leave but it's not opening full for more than six month :( it also yellowing leaves constantly. what's wrong with my baby?
Hi I have a question about my echivera west rainbow plant which turned from pink to green and then white all over. What happen/ please advice
Helpful ❤️ Thanks 😊
Hi, My peace Lilly new small leaves are too turning brown please do suggest me what to do and what's the reason ..
My dumb cane has reached the ceiling. I repotted it…. Now the leaves are droopy 😕
Why do so many people say doffenbachis are low light when it’s literally not true
I have had three different types of Dieffenbachia. Two died and the last one will not grow.
Thank you so much for the info you’ve been very helpful 👍🏽
Very detailed n clear
Thanks for the tips. What soil mix do you use for the dieffenbachia and peace lily?
I saw your video and liked it very much but my dumb cane has brand new small plants that are yellow do not know why
Wow! So enlightening! Pardon the pon.
My neighbor said her Cebu Blue Pothos was not doing well. What was wrong with it? I said I could not help her until I saw where it lives. She looked at me like I was nuts. She ssid it is in my sunroom by the windows.
I went into the house and step by step went over what it might be. Since I have watched your videos and am getting a better understanding of what my plants need and how I can help them be healthy and happy.
Comparing a plant in a nursery to an Olympic athlete is so eye opening. It really helps me to understand of what I can and can not provide to different types of plants.
Thank you!
😎
Yes - people need to come to terms, in an objective/measurable manner, just how limited their light situation is indoors - and ultimately, cut their plants some slack.
@@HousePlantJournal 😎
Haha I watch this an hour too late. I went and cut off all the brown tips on my peace lily 😬
I repotted mine and still have the same issue. I fix the soil and still have the issue. So is my watering could be the problem?
Let it dry out
Thank you for the helpful insights. I'm a new plant mom and I was getting worried about my peace lilies but, your explanation of light and watering made sense. God bless!
It turned yellow so yellow should i cut the leave of what hellllp☹️😢
Didn’t address leaf curling on Didffenbachia😢
have you done any more videos on dieffenbachia or chinese evergreens
I appreciate your information very much.
Why is my diffenbachia not having the white variegation - it has on just one and the rest is all just green . It is placed on a west facing window , though it’s giving new leaves constantly.
Could be two reasons.
1. Not enough sunlight. Plants are very smart they lose their variegation to preserve itself using chlorophyll (green pigment) to photosynthesis sunlight.
2. Variegation are a genetic defect even though they look pretty. Sometimes it continues on sometimes it will revert back to the original genetic color out of nowhere. The only way you can revert this process if you find the last node that still had the variegation and cut everything that sprouted after.
Get a sunlight meter to see if it's #1 or #2.
does having sun tunnels count as light?...I just did my roof and added 2 sun tunnels on my living rooms to make it extra bright... does it count a light the plant likes ?
It counts...but the only way to do a meaningful "count" is with a light meter. Having the light tunnel is definitely better than not having one.
@@HousePlantJournal , ok so once I get the meter what is the right number ?
@@mayangirl3757 there's no "right number", only loose guidelines: 200-400 FC is great for "low light" plants while "bright indirect light" plants would enjoy 600-1200 FC
Your comment on the brown tips on peace Lily’s really helped me understand my plant differently! I was having the same concerns over mine and suddenly this video pops up! Perfect timing lol 👌
is it ok to just repot a dieffenbachia with the rootball
Hi I want to know I bought this deffenbachia 15 days back water after 7 days giving indirect sunlight then why the leaves turned yellow which I cut off and why the r sad I m worried can anyone help plz
Hello - please fill in (completely!) the background info here: www.houseplantjournal.com/help
do you know much about the lipstick plant?
Love your videos they’ve really helped.
Enjoyed your show very much, and learned much about the diffenbachia with yellowing leaves. Now I know it's sap is very topic, so thank you, again. Good day now!
Thank you so much for answering my question, somehow along the way I probably overwater or underwater my two plants that were planted together. Its been 2and half going on 3 years that I have these plants. I feed them with a liquid fertilizer in the growing seasons. Any more advice I really appreciate it. Oh I have my plants in a southern window. Thanks again, God bless.
You touched on a key factor of watering most potted plants; to water thoroughly and properly water must come out the drainage holes. To know if this is occurring one needs to be able to see the bottom of the pot, which can be difficult if the plant is double potted, in a decorative container, basket, etc.. A plant needs to be installed in such a way that one can see the water draining and that the water is adequately contained in a correctly sized drip tray or other means. In some instances after watering any water remaining in the drip tray or receptacle after a couple of hours will need to be removed. Thus one needs easy access to the tray. Proper installation is important. I often advise folks to take plants that have high water requirements to a sink of tub / shower to water them, if practical. That way they are most likely to get watered thoroughly without making a mess .
Very helpful! I take my smaller plants to a sink to water. But what do you recommend for larger pots that are difficult/heavy to move? I’m struggling with properly watering without having to move the pot; even the tray underneath is hard to remove to dump the excess water out. Thanks in advance
@@ivlm1886 ~ Buy a turkey baster. You can suction the excess water out of the drip tray with it and squirt it into a container for disposal.
I'm a new subscriber to your channel and oh how I love your way of explaining things. You sound so chill and not intimidating like other vloggers. I like hearing you that way because I feel like I wanna relax from stressful activities. Very informational too for plant enthusiasts like me! Keep going! You've got a fan here!
I ditto this comment! 💚🌿🤗
My dieffenbachia green magic is propably dying! Heeelp... It has received light (except less this time of the year) and I check the roots are not rotten, and recently I have been misting it more. What is the solution? Its not just at the point where is couple yellow leafs, the whole plant is almost limp.. :( I have also newer different type of dieffenbachia and its getting some yellow leafs quite fast :( Somehow all the plants that don't have that stronger rubbery feel to their leafs, are difficult in my home.. And I live in Finland where we don't have much sun in these months...and now its like many weeks only cloudy weather, no sun. But I keep them close to window. Is plant light any help for this type of plants? I have only one plantlight now and its for other plants at the moment.
Thanks your information on dieffenbachia was so helpful. Recently purchased one very thick and lush and now getting yellowing leaves. Many sites say low lite but moving closer to window since sun not too strong right now. When should I transplant having to water several times a week. Thanks
*VERY IMPORTANT* "More light" doesn't necessarily mean "longer exposure to direct sun", it means "put the plant as close to the window as possible BUT, if the sun will shine on the plant for longer than 2-3 hours, then block it with a white sheer curtain" - a wider view of the sky is what you want to aim for, not just "more direct sun"
Thanks 🙏
I definitely understand what you're saying as far as the diffs spending their older leaves to use that energy for the top but I get confused
because I've seen diffenbachias that are 6+ feet tall and bushy from the base up.. can you explain that to me? Thanks for your video
I have only 3 leaves on my dumb cane plant and 2 are yellow/brown. I am taking your advice from this video and adjusting its location, but do I need to cut off the browning leaves?
Why are my dumb cane Camille leaves are torn ?
/ no pets, no accident, proper soil , indirect light, proper watering /
Any help appreciated 🙏🏼
Im so happy to have found your channel. This was very informative. Thank you! New subscriber!
I put my dumb cane outside in partial shade and now I have a million tiny plants growing in the soil around the plant. I’m excited and nervous at the same time. Are they baby dumb canes or another type of plant? I’m so lost. I can’t wait to see what happens🫣
My difenbachia is outside on my porch. It is pink idk if that matters. We had a very bad hale storm and it got torn up before I could get out to move it. The leaves that got torn up turn yellow kind of see thru if that makes since. Now all leaves have done that. But everyone of them have a fuzzy bloom on the top. Do I need to do something for the leaves or what is it doing?
Can you give some information on why my leaves are continually turning yellow,. Even the new baby leaves turn yellow. Thank you. Great delivery.
In my case, leaf all of them are dry and stiffed.......... happened to me 2 times no matter how many youtube videos I watched, this plant just do not strive for me.
Thank you! I woke up in a panic because my plant "Jan & Fran" look yellow and withered. They've never had this happen before! Panic mode set in and I'm very grateful I came across this ! Many blessings
Hi, love your channel. My dieffenbachia compacta plant is wilting. What should I do?
I got a dieffenbachia, but I left it in the shade outside. The sun scorched it and then I over watered it because I didn't realize it had moisture retaining soil. I switched it to well draining soil, but I am scared to water it now because of it's yellow leaves. I don't want to overwater it again
Plants do photosynthesize in artificial light too!
Yes, but measure it and you'll see there is a big difference between a grow light positioned right over top of the plant and just an few ceiling lights (as in this situation) - the numbers will surprise you
Thanks for your great explanation👍🏻
I have diffenbakhia plant a year ago
It stopped growing but now it grows small leaves !!! I don’t know why😞
Thanks. You're so helpful in how you teach us to care for our plants. You help take the confusion and stress out of houseplant care and explain things in a logical way! You have helped me and my plants! thanks
Thanks! I'm glad you find them helpful! Let me know if there are any other topics that cause confusion or stress that you'd like me to cover!
I have dumb cane. I would love for you to look at. It's doing something I never seen before
