Elton & Orston - Least Used Station in Nottinghamshire

- A three mile walk from Leicestershire into Nottinghamshire takes us to ... Elton & Orston, which is a ridiculously least used station with just two services a day!
You can download the ORR statistics here: dataportal.orr.gov.uk/statist...
Morning Geoff and the Doctor. Plug Point phone is fairly ancient but it gives the train crew /driver an ability to speak to either control or the signaller if there are any issues at that station. Called a 2-wire or plug phone, the module to use it will be held on the train. You should have asked the EMT guard to see his plug phone!😎
Oh...and you Really missed this one. Last train to London...call yourselves ELO fans! 😉
Sorry Charley. No... different system but the approach is the same.
Oh that makes sense and especially after they said they couldn't easily get a signal
Elton & Orston sound like a folk duo with acoustic guitars.
I was going to Skegness yesterday from Nottingham at 7:35am and I saw Elton And Orston as we passed through at speed
Perhaps Last train to London would have been a better choice for an ELO song
About the best ELO song choice I can think of for a Train Station. ;-)
this train don't stop there anymore by Elton John
"I gotta get that southbound train tonight . . . ."
RossHamMil How about 'Passengers' by Elton John?
Geoff Marshall's Elo 😂
Back in the 80's I used the Grantham to Nottingham service quite often, and I think pretty much every train stopped at all stations, including Elton & Orston. The service must have been cut back since then.
I love how quiet and calm these stations all are, though I can't wait for the stark change in mood when Geoff eventually does the least used station in the City of London.
He's already done Angel Road
He's done the least used in Greater London (Angel Road). Check on his channel
Olan Kenny That was greater London,The city of the london is separate and is only about a square mile big
Anyway, the least used in the Square Mile won't be done as it's not a county. Geoff is doing the least used station in every COUNTY
He’s already done
Back in the eighties when Nottingham-Grantham trains stopped at every station, I used to get off here to go and stay at my girlfriend’s place for the weekend. She lived in a hamlet to the north of Orston, which was the most windswept, depressing walk to undertake in winter. My proto-Goth garb made the trek just that little bit more grim....
Fantastic video, brought some interesting memories back.
What does Dave have in common with British weather?
On an average day, both have three degrees.
Heyo!
i don;t get it
Dave is well educated, and Britain is cold. :)
ttocs 1998 Not this year.
For all the hate we see on RUclips, occasionally there a comment appears that is a real diamond in the rough. Best joke I’ve heard all year
You know what guys? A handful of us can shift stats of ANY top 10 least used stations within a day. Wooow, what a power we have!
Loving the cutaway gags, keep them coming. Great video
Absolutely brilliant. Really enjoyed this ... and .... calm...
Great two videos guys and really scenic around there 😊🌲🍁🌳🍃🌾🚂🚆
I used to catch the train to there from Nottingham, late 70's early 80's as a kid, to fish in the smite. Which is a good walk from the station.
Then, most of the trains stopped.
Very calm. A good place to go for a retreat.
Most number of least used stations possible in one day? GO.
I'd imagine if you got a pace on Heworth, Manors and Dunston are doable in the day & I'd fairly wager they are all pretty much the least used in their immediate area I.e. East Gateshead, Newcastle & West Gateshead
Although it was mid-afternoon, the train you caught from ELO was the "Last Train (with a connection ) to London" - cue music.
I love that mention of ELO. They're the last band I would ever expect to hear in a video about a railway station. Considering the station's name, I think Elton John should have been mentioned as well.
I use Bottesford station a fair bit. Nice night out there and the train times are handy for a few pints.
Well, as a Leicestershire boy I'm glad to say that Bottesford is a major passenger hub in comparison with the Elton & Orston passenger numbers. Your calmness interlude put me in mind of the alleged Japanese package holidays which consist of flying people to Glasgow, bussing them out into the moors and leaving them there for the day amongst the blown heather and the silence. A cheaper version for stressed-out cityfolk would be Elton & Orston on the first train, silence all day (enhanced by trains speeding past) and back (with batteries charged) on the last train. Thermosflask of tea allowed.
Awesome video!
I know the perfect title for your album- Geoff & Dave "I don't even know what we're doing"
Awesome Video!
Despite living near Chester for most of my life, I have never ridden the line through Stanlow just for fun (or any line on the National Network for that matter). There is a certain beauty in taking a train just because. Very much in keeping with the calm stations it would pass through.
Another good video guys
Such a unique route. Goes through three counties all has their least used stations.
Hugely excellent.
I was about to say “I can play this to get to sleep it’s so relaxing” - but now I just have the image of Geoff and a blue Yoga mat! Geoff - why have you done this to me??????
Looks like an ideal location for a 'new village' with 1000 or so houses, that would boost the figures.
It's a bit in the middle of nowhere really. Any growth would go to Bottesford in reality.
When I did this station I did a bike ride from Newark North Gate mostly along the old line to Bottesford West Jn. which is a cycle path.
It’s very weird to see my local least used station, I’ve been there twice to take photos in fact. I love how quiet and empty it feels when I’m there.
I’ll have to go again and take the All The Stations shirt I won
I wonder if the crew on the train at 6:00 was like, "Did you see that? When we went through Elton there were a couple of blokes meditating on the platform." Or, who knows, maybe that happens all the time. :)
It must sound amazing when a train comes through and the fade to silence.
To the stations? No, more like to the ends of the earth m this series/channel. Love it
Good video, and thanks for pointing out that this station is called ELO.
Inane observation time; Dave looks like former NME journalist and current BBC guy Andrew Collins. Coincidentally he once wrote a show for Radio 4 called 'Mr Blue Sky' which was named after the ELO song. The *best* ELO song.
The reason I think many stations in the city of Nottingham arent the least used is probably because the stations are also with the Nottingham Express Transit(NET) tram service that runs along side it
Is Elton and Orston the name of the Indie band or the name of the album?
Proper shoegazers, them two.
So is it "Proper Shoegazers" by Elton and Orston or "Elton and Orston" by the Proper Shoegazers?
"Neither Sro nor Le by The Shoegazers".. I feel as though I contributed
I think it has to be the latter.
Band name
Plug points are for portable phones carried by rail staff. They can plug their phone in and punch in the number for wherever they’re calling. If I recall correctly emergency services also carry these phones.
I only know this from binging on railway training videos - any actual staff please correct me if I’m spouting gibberish.
plug points have been discontinued in the Birmingham area at least, maintenance staff such as myself now use mobile telephones (GSM) and trains are fitted with GSM-R, though there are still some lineside telephones and Signal Post Telephones.
I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that...
Also, Dave is me with films! Although I have seen all the Star Wars films several times I haven't seen any of the other films you listed, or Wayne's World. :)
Dave has seen more films than I have. Last time I went to the cinema was almost 10 years ago, and it had been 10 years more for the time before that.
That fade in opening shot!!!
Not the Scooby-Doo ending...
I’ve enjoyed this calm video
PS more Dave
Surely the ELO song should have been 'Last train to London'.......Love the videos
Hi Geoff,
I was thinking that it cover the usage numbers per train in addition to per day. It would be interesting to see how they compare.
Such great films where has this man been.
Yes, what you said about keeping little used stations open, I saw in someone else's video about under used train stations, that for Network Rail to be able to permanently close a station they have to put a request through parliament etc, so as you say it's probably simpler and cheaper to just keep it open with a symbolic occasional train stopping there!
Nice vids though. 👍
Hence 'Parliamentary Services' & Ghost trains.
Glad to see Jeff Lynne and ELO... like others, though, I would have suggested Last Train to London. Surprised they haven't made it a request stop.
When you mentioned ELO, I thought of the song Mr. Blue Sky.
Today is the day. I’m travelling to Bottesford from Market Harborough, then walking to Elton & Orston to catch the 17.11. 👌
I'm with Dave, I've hardly seen any films either :-)
Have you ever been to Westerfield Station, just outside Ipswich? That's pretty damn quiet. And it has a disused platform bay and Victorian waiting room, just rotting away.
I am an American and I have been to Westerfield station several times. There is a nice pub nearby. It is a good starting point for several countryside walks from Ipswich. Suffolk is very flat and is good for countryside walking if you aren't young anymore and don't want to have to deal with going uphill. Check out the brochure East Suffolk Line Walks which contains detailed directions for about 20 walks from 2.5 to 9+ miles or so. The East Suffolk Line runs between Ipswich and Lowestoft. There are stations about every 5 miles. Every train stops at all stations. There are also other lines with junctions at Ipswich from which you can travel to Norwich, Cambridge, Colchester, Bury St. Edmonds, etc. There is a pub with hotel rooms directly across from the Ipswich station. There is also a modern German-owned chain hotel a few blocks west of the station called the PentaHotel (no atmosphere, but efficient and fairly cheap).
Yes, Lowestoft line trains don't call at Westerfield now except on Sundays, only Felixstowe ones. That used to be the case in the late 70's, but they've been calling there throughout the 80's, 90's and early 2000's, they've just reverted back to that pattern. Also, the Felixstowe trains have to run wrong line through Westerfield to access the Fekixstowe branch.
love the doctor, we should have more of the doctor... the doctor named dave
Mr Blue Sky - obvious choice for a usual spring day in England
Dave has seen more of those films than I have :-D
What?! not Mr Blue Sky? :P
because its the one everyone knows
You know, I'm starting to regret not filming "Pubs of Sussex" back then. There's something quite therapeutic about this series.
Mr Blue Sky isn't all that good compared to other tracks like Telephone Line
This is now the least used station in Britain as of 2021/2022 stats! You’ll have to visit this station again!
Geoff! You missed out on the opportunity to break in a bit of "Across the Border" with that ELO joke! XD
this is now the least used station in britain
£2000,- penalty for trespassing?!? That more then the whole station is worth!! 😂😂
The best thing about the intro is that as I watch this, this video has about 6-700 views more than the Leicestershire one.
Can we please get Dave back? He is toooooo funny
At the shorter platform once stood the stationbuilding. Isn't it possible there was once, between the platform and the roadbridge, a switch leading to a small siding?
By getting on the train at Elton & Orsten, you've upped the yearly statistics and it may have changed place in the top 10 :D
Let me know if you decide to do one of these for Derbyshire!
I never knew Elton and Orston was actually a station!
One thought about the plug point phone, is it a similar system to the 2 wire emergency phone that the Underground uses seeing as you had issues with your mobile signal, could be possible that GSM-R have a similar problem if not enough coverage there?
I saw Clockwork Orange at Prince Charles Cinema, a double feature with The Shining.
Is the trespassing penalty more expensive in Nottinghamshire (at £2000 instead of £1000) or has the sign just not been updated in a while? 4:20
As I started watching this I was wondering if you had visited Stanlow & Thornton yet, and blow me if you didn't mention it. Here's a question for you. How many of the least used stations from every county, serve two places? Stanlow & Thornton (not sure if that is in the stats, should have researched my question first) Elton and Orston etc. Just intrigues me that these places serve two places and still can't get many passengers.
Wait have they doubled the penalty for trespassing the railway?? (it says 2000 quid at 4:40)
Geoff, if we ever do least used in West Yorkshire together (love to, Pontefract Baghill), you'll need a decent knowledge of 30's movies to impress me!
I think you should do the least used station in Derbyshire
Hi Geoff I have a idea for you it’s to do with Nottinghamshire there’s a line that runs from Nottingham to Worksop it’s called the Robin Hood line and runs through Mansfield there’s some stop after Mansfield that might surprise you . Have a good day grate vid always interesting
tml136 what's so surprising?
Shirebrook station is interesting and there’s a station just before Worksop I’ve forgotten what it’s called Worksop station is different specially with the pub and a model railway club there as well
tml136 did he not do robin hood line in all the stations?
mWillia hSchlic I think he did but I’m not to sure thinking more about lest used station
mWillia hSchlic - yes, they visited those stations.
Even Angel Road has a footbridge and Permit to Travel machine!
No mention of the two grit bins in the facilities count.
And there's no staff to spread the grit either
When are you doing some of the more northern stations in like Cheshire Manchester Merseyside Lancashire because there is an amazing old railway station near me called Middlewood but not where the current Middlewood is
Can we crowdfund a Netflix subscription for Dave?
I think Geoff is mixing Scooby Doo with Wayne's World. That's a mashup indeed.
Waynes World! Mystery Time! Excellent! wooooowooowowowwoo!
Terrible quality, but... ruclips.net/video/Whmxww0xqsM/видео.html
Proper station :)
I wonder if anyone has brought a ticket from Bottlesford to Elton & Orston?
That really was a complete nothing station. It makes Midgham look positively bustling! QUESTION: How many of the least used stations have an AMPERSAND?
Midgham has a sizeable village next to it though.
Glad I'm not the only person not to have watched that many films....
I demand a debate with Geoff on just how good The Matrix trilogy was! Phenomenal!!
Offer still open!! Name your time and place (or train I’m in a wheelchair so I can get you on one on the cheap lol).
I’m still waiting for them to make a sequel trilogy about the ‘rebirth’ of Neo!!
"I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."
Platform is probably shorter for a connection into a siding after you come through the bridge hole?
That plug point is for a handheld phone which drivers can plug in and connect to a internal number such as a singnalling centres. However, GSM-R should do the job
Are plug points used where GSM signal is not available? Geoff remarked earlier about the lack of 3G signal. (GSM is 2G)
Norbiton Flyer I'm not entirley sure, but your comment would make sense as the Northern City Line to Moorgate has them so there musn't be any signal in the tunnels
Can't believe you didn't use "Last train to London"
Don't bring me down, Bruce.
Is the next series 'Meditation at the station:?
Why not Mr. Blue Sky
I had the same answers as Dave in the film round.
Please Wait...
Please come to Derbyshire
What's the next Least Used Station on your list,Geoff?
Geoff I'm with you, Dave watch more films! Lol
NEVER seen Wayne’s World?! BACK TO THE FUTURE too?!?! OMG Dave. (p.s. despite what others say, I loved the ELO choice...)
Wayne's World is a must see. Its very important.
I cannot see how many parking spaces there are at that station
That crappy yellow help point had Thales on the side do they make em ? They are based in Gatwick and make stuff for planes .
Part of the Gatwick site used to be Rediffon MEL, a contractor to the UK Ministry of Defence.
