Hillbrow - Johannesburg's Most Dangerous Hood! 🇿🇦

- Опубликовано: 7 сен 2021
- Take a walk with me through Hillbrow, an inner city neighbourhood in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa. It is known for its high levels of population density, unemployment, poverty, prostitution, crime and murder.
Today’s video includes zero commentary, because I wanted to document the raw and un-cut sounds and sights of Hillbrow filmed on Wednesday, September 8th, 2021.
Most would say that Hillbrow is the most dangerous hood in South America, what do you think?

In the mid 1980s I lived in a building called Idlewild on Kapteijn Street in Hillbrow. Back then, Hillbrow was a pretty cool place and it was (reasonably) safe to walk around even at nighttime. It appears to have changed somewhat....
That flat is now one of the most dangerous buildings in hillbrow
Good Morning Chris, :-) happy to see you are still with us have a fantastic day!
I am alive, doing well, and having a great time!
look whose back. Good to see you again my friend
Thank you!
Thank you very much for this Video - a beautiful place to live in the seventies and eighties
Your Chanel very interesting - very good travel trips
Did u show your friends and are you happy now
Thanks for the tour. So weird to see places like Highpoint - so that's what happened to Fontana bakery! There used to be a big video game arcade next to it called Ally's Palley, which was practically my second home lol. I knew every inch of Hillbrow, look at it now.
Lol it looks actually like a really beautiful place!! Everywhere has crime, murder, and prostitutes if you know where to look. How inaccurate a label has been slapped on here by media, and for why?? You have to wonder why they don't want us coming here, to this beautiful place, with happy children playing, families together, and endless fresh fruit vendors lining the sidewalks. So funny too, your style, juxtaposing the title with zero commentary against backdrops of sunny picturesque street walks and scenery that you are filming, letting your viewer decide for themselves. Thank you! At least some people, with eyes to see, don't need to be told what to think, there is risk involved in real life, but I'd rather take measured risk than be so safe I'm in a straight jacket

That cylindrical apartment building was amazing
Back in the mid 80s a number of kids fell to their deaths ( over a different period of time ) as they walked along the outside ledges to each others flats as a dare. Also the penthouses at the very top , one was used in the movie starring roger moore ' GOLD ' .
I am in Canada. I have relatives who live in Sandton and Capetown. We never met ( my dad's cousins emigrated there from Egypt in 1947. I am actually scared shit to go as I am used to get around by myself abroad ( trains, buses, etc). Any tips?
Taxis and get a family member to help you
Uber/Bolt. Don't use the taxis the locals use.
Just don’t come!
I appreciated the video, Thank you!
Thank you!
Awesome video. I did a walking tour of Hillbrow last year with Dlala Nje (highly recommended) and I was shocked at how "safe" (relatively speaking) the area felt. I was expecting it to be a lot seedier and more menacing.
Are you black or Caucasian? As a caucasian woman walking alone in Hillbrow would most likely be a death sentence.. Nothing safe about that dear.
@@justinebrink4056 I'm white, as was everyone else in the group. I wouldn't walk there alone but with a guided group during the day we all felt very safe. As a group we walked several blocks and we all thought it would feel far more menacing than it was. The people we passed on the streets were just regular people going about their day.
@@justinebrink4056 An east Indian friend of mine thought he wouldn't be a target, while walking through Joburg. Some black guys immediately attacked him, knocked him unconscious and he had all his things stolen. Some of the local people selling food and items in the street helped him out, but refused to report who did it to the police for fear of reprisals. Such a shame. South Africa looks like a physically beautiful country, but it doesn't look safe to go far from gated communities.
@@soulsurfer639 It's actually quite safe as long as you stick to the good and safe areas. Mid city Johannesburg and Hillbrow is not a safe place normally. Some people would say it is quite safe and as per the above, in bigger groups it might be, but it's not one of the safe areas as such. Sandton, Bryanston, Edenvale, Parkhurst to mention a few are some really, really pretty and scenic areas that are safer to walk around in. Johannesburg and Cape Town as well as Pretoria are the bigger cities and has a lot to offer as long as you stay out of the dangerous areas. Quite a lot of smaller picturesque towns across South Africa are actually safer than the big cities.
Oh and I'm so sorry about what happened to your friend ♥@@soulsurfer639
Cool neighborhood, thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!
Cool? It’s extremely dangerous especially at night
Just out of curiosity, what time I’m the day was this? I’m just going to guess the morning because it didn’t seem like an abundance of people out.
Balls of steel regardless, Hillbrow is a fucked up place. Not quite as bad as Alexandra but I wouldn’t stop at any signs lights anywhere near that area or CBD
This was mid afternoon, and I found Hillbrow much worse than Alexandra, although nothing happened to me in either locations. The people in Alexandra were friendly and I was able to interact alot more. Thank you for watching !
Zimbabwe/Nigeria Lite
😂
i lived in here in the 80s worked as a nurse for one year as a 24 yr old it was a baptism of fire thankful to return to uk but did travel and beautiful country and mostly had a lot of fun
Hi chris, were you not afraid of the crime factor? you took a big risk, nice though
No I wasn't afraid but my senses were tingling, and I had a heightened awareness.
Africa is not for wimps unlike certain western countries
There's so many horns honking!? Can't believe how they drive down there lol.
Didn't watch video, but been to SA many times. Most of the horn honking I've heard is from the mini-bus taxi's, that is how they hail riders.
Kind of reminds me of Hamilton, ON, but hell of a lot more dangerous
Funny that you said that, Hamilton is for the zombies. But yes, this place has a bad reputation for crime.
Lol
I don't remember a time my mom ever took me near Hillbrow as a kid.
Is this near District 9?
No. That's in cape town. This is Johannesburg
The time to leave was, when the Jews were leaving! When the Portugese moved, it was to late. ;-)
I didn't even hear one of our 11 official languages.. majority of the people leaving there are foreigners.
I would definitely hang out there and chill with the people
Does anybody clean the streets or repair the footways
haha in the end you see some other has filmed🙌🏽
can u please show the street of sorento building opposite the library
I need a Time Machine. I filmed this video two years ago.
Imagine it at night 😮
Watch a video of Kensington Philadelphia. This place seems nice compared.
good ole filthy lol
I can see the comparison, although Kensington seems to be 100% drugs and Hillbrow is poverty, crime with a side of drugs. Thanks for watching!
That’s why I don’t know why these people keep sayin there scared they gotta to cowards it’s crime everywhere
It's noticeable that there isn't anyone hanging around strung out on drugs or drunk
I didn't see any either, but it's winter (cold) and they may be in the abandoned buildings.
I lived in Madison Square garden in hillbrow in 76 78 it was a lovely place not so now it seems
I've read many comments from previous residents, and yes i've watched the documentaries from before and after. Hopefully they can bounce back!
Balls of steel man. These streets are supposedly super dangerous for whites. I saw you been to Ponte City building as well, are people still living there?
Yes, Ponte City is completely full and well maintained.
I went to Ponte as well and I am white. I walked from Ponte to the TV Tower and on these streets. Wnt to that pub (3:40 in the video). Not alone. In a group. Some parts of Hillbrow are well maintained, some are not. Now with the face masks and maybe a hat and shades, one does not stand out to much from the crowd.
Most criminals in these areas are opportunists they will rob you if are carrying or they see valuable things no one will attack you for no reason just because you are white. You can walk in any area of Joburg during the day but be observant of your surroundings, don't attracted unnecessary attention and you don't need balls of steel either.
Homeboy walking slow due to carrying dem huge balls.
Hahaha
Wtf last building? Whats the name
Ponte Building.
Even a warzone doesn't look too bad during the daytime. In reality, Hillbrow is a ghetto.
It is actually interesting that Americans say how dangerous Baltimore, Philadelphia and Chicago are. Those cities are a joke compared to the bad areas of Johannesburg and Cape Town
There’s barely any shootings in SA, what you talking about
@@thandosiza3349 I was talking about the conditions. Not the schools
@@icohen1627 there’s plenty of street shooting in those cities
Dude you gotta be out your mind .. Chicago doin way over 1k murders every year
@@thandosiza3349 😂South Africa one of the highest murder rates in the world. It's statistically has a higher murder rate than Iraq (161), Somalia (164), Russia (169), and Mexico (180), to name a few.
They had a big picture of Michael Jordan
It's lovely to see how clean and well maintained it is, the residents must be so proud.
Lol 😂
Lol
Clean? Well maintained? You must have a very different definition of clean and well maintained..
@@Chillednfunked I think Derek was being sarcastic.
spot on ahahah
Sad,lived there in 1982,vast difference,total deterioration,and filthy.
It needs to be cleaned up , do a little bit of Reno. Encourage people to be of good behaviour. That's all.
Place gets scary after dark :(
Why everyone has on coats and jackets I'm confused
Because it's winter and freezing cold.
People are just happy here
Hillbrow is similar to Paharganj the difference between them is following:
1) Paharganj has cheap hotels in the range of US$10 to US$ 20.
2) Crime rate is lower in Paharganj
3) People are friendlier in Paharganj
4) In Hillbrow you should watch out for criminals while in Paharganj you should watch out for scammers.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Why do foreign vloggers then criticize Hillbrow and admire Paharganj?
No homeless people laying on the streets ?
Why is-it that u guys always say 'this certain place is the most dangerous 'well to-start wit 'lets see it at night 'Ya. #Cheers.
Well David, if you pull the crime statistics in South Africa you will find that Hillbrow is one of the top neighbourhoods for crime, and after reading many forums and news articles, most would agree that this unfortunately is the worst. That is the reason why I included it in the title. I also left a link to an article with crime stats in the description of this video. All the best!
@@ChrisMustList I don't know why you don't have at least a half a million subscribers. This is the best vacation I've ever been on (through your eyes)!

You were even filming and nothing happened. Dont see the danger
Be smart Eduard, and look at the stats. Don't use my 1 hour walk as an example of what is safe. I am triple degree blackbelt, of course nobody is messing with me.
Dare you to do that walk on Friday Saterday night .. Entire community held hostage by crime gangs, I'm sure most in Hilbrow are loving hard working people, sad the ANC allowed CRIME to fester and take hold of the country the way it is, mo jobs = crime.
This is a real "Tour de Smeg"!!!!!
Doesn't seem as dangerous as Harlem, Detroit, Chicago, Atlanta, Saint Louis, or an NYC subway.
Look at the crime stats
The country is dying and soon will disappear 😢

Are the residents of Hillbrow considered as Coloured or Black?
Black African 100%
80% Non-South African black. Mostly from Nigeria, Zimbabwe to name a few.
Black foreigners, mostly illegal immigrants from other African countries
When it was first build bet it looked fantastic
I've heard the stories an watched the videos. How things have changed!

It was a cold, dark day, and the feeling as I walked was very sad.

Yes it is winter, and on that day it was very cold.

Where’s the danger 😊
This is sad, but was to be expected, after the change in power. I lived in Hillbrow for a year in the early 80s (Kapteinstreet). You occaisionally heard gunshots at night, even then. Sometimes you could see the bulletholes in windows of stores. White people were allowed to open carry handguns then, and many did. Still, I felt safe anywhere, any time. Black people had to be out of town at night, unless they had a permit from their employer and were commuting to or from work. News has rung out to the world telling what a sh'thole SA has now become.
Before it sad for blacks now for whites
You are just one racist fool and u proudly post such shit, have you been to other black communities in SA. It looks like u are happy with Apartheid laws, as much as Hillbrow is bad, look at the kids in the streets, they are happy, people look happy. So if wena u feel u want this apartheid laws to come back please go and build ur own country, this is our country, as much as there are bad tbings happening there is a lot of good happening.
