Um, he was a Jazz drummer first and foremost. Vital Signs with what Italian Australian guitarist with the crazy sweep picking technique and video that plays Kiesel. Frank Gambale is his name. He was Jazz in Berklee, replaced that original drummer in journey who was against Steve Perry poppy tendencies and by the time he did this I think he'd already been studying with Freddie Grubber, Buddy Rich's roommate.
I used to have this on VHS, brilliant! Have you any plans to upload the other solo. (AABA form on the red/white kit?) Thanks for posting this good quality version, much appreciated.
It don’t get ant better than this. Love his playing. Wow!
Yes ❤
It makes so much sense for Steve Smith to study Max Roach. Two of the most musical players of all time!
Лучшее барабанное соло в истории!😊👍
Great playing. Definitely an overall Max Roach vibe, but I kind of hear a little Buddy Rich vibe in places. Cool stuff. Smith is one of the greats.
Simply beautiful
fenomenale come sempre------mi piace quel rullo uno e uno, complimenti
amazing to see a clean (awesome) rock drummer doing a bebop solo, real different feel, but more articulated with those clean snaps.

Max Roach did have very musical drum solo's and you can hear that musical voicing in a lot of Steve Smith's solos. They are both amazing.
Stevev Smith always make it looks easy !!! True sensei
ROLLLLLLCALLLL Big Sid
Damn. So funky and loose (in a good way). Total boss.
😍😍
I heard your amazing drum music.
I want to be friends with you.
I want to share a video.
Be healthy and happy! 🎶🎤🎸🍀
How on earth do you still have a copy of this? I had one in '93; also had Rod Morgenstein on it.
I managed to keep my VHS tape long enough to be able to digitize it. The Rod stuff is awesome, too!
Vhs... nostalgic. Thanks man
@jasonpatera Very cool, thanks for sharing. How did you digitize it, any recommendations?
