I love Steve Smith. Easily one of the most underrated drummers in the history of popular music. This genius has played everything from arena rock to intimate jazz. If you are unfamiliar with his instructional dvds, I HIGHLY recommend them. You cannot help to be a better drummer for it. Thanks, Steve. You're one of the very best!
Anyone in this class of drumming has my greatest admiration. There is no best, but many inspiring greats today. I'm indebted to all of them for keeping me beyond humble and motivated. It's incredibly fun watching what people with discipline, talent and practice are able to do!
What I love about Steve Smith is that here he showing a jazz approach and has incredible chops, but he could also rock his butt off as evidenced by the performances with the ROCK groups for whom he played. That's the sign of an amazing "all around drummer." I have tremendous respect for Steve.
Saw Steve live two times. One thing I've always loved about him is his passion. He just loves playing those drums...and he continually pushes himself. Quite an inspiration.
Saw Steve recently here in Santa Cruz (sat directly behind him). He is arguably the most technically proficient drummer in the world right now. Inspired me for sure.
+Suss the Drummer IMO Steve Smith is debatably the best drummer alive, and has been for some time now, even though it's an extremely hard choice to make (and if there's even really an answer to that category.)
+Aditya Tyagi You probably never saw Billy during the MO days. I don't know anyone that could have replaced Cobham during the 71-73 period and be able to make MO as great as they were. Narada couldn't even play the entire catalog of the first three albums, he learned how to play the first two studio albums, but they couldn't play the Live album material.
+Suss the Drummer Yeah but c'mon - Mr. Ulrich still holds the best rhythmic taste in history. You know, Ulrich Schnauss, master of 90's and 00's ambient electronic music. btw the best drummer is Jojo Mayer or that guy in sepultura
Steve, I love the way you play, and I love your drumming lifestyle. You give insight with generosity that I wish all drummers had. You have brought us a lot of great music! Thank you
You make the sticks look so fluent in your hands. Bravo You just got the look in your playing that you seem so at ease with it. Could not imagine the hour and hours of practice over the years.
John Mackay I don't know if you noticed...the video ends at 5:25. That, my dull friend, was this mythical, fundamental error. No more stupid people, please. I hate explaining jokes.
Sick......absolutely sick. I've always loved Steve and the way he played with Journey, as well as the jazz stuff and other projects he's come up with. Now he's shown the world what an incredible musician he is, and we get to see it face to face. Thank you Steve for sharing this with us. Now I have to go back to my practice pad, tail between my legs, and start all over on my paradiddles. I also heard you are one hell of a nice guy. God bless you.
Every time I think I'm getting good at paradiddle exercises, I come back to watch this and get my ego in check. He is so relaxed and conversational while he is doing this! Really fun to watch...
Steve is amazing. If you slowed that video down you would see that everything Steve does is 100% accurate. I never paid that much attention to Steve while Journey was around, but I am now a major Steve Smith Fan.
Great power and execution! Articulate; reminding me why I practice-" it's all about the way you play something"-demonstrated here above -Owning practice pad-thank you Steve smith
He’s always been considered a mutant even by other drummers. And the man has the versatility of being one of the best studio drummers ever. I mean he was the drummer for Journey.( He wanted a nice house I guess) But he’s also played with some of the most phenomenal jazz guys around.
i would say he is. not neccesarily because of talent but sheerly for being a very talented in you know such small bands as nirvana and that other teensy band queens of the stone age. he for sure made drumming look cool and he for sure is one of the guys that got me into drumming.
There is always someone "better" in every damn aspect of life, no matter if you are a drummer or a mechanic or a shop clerk.....Maybe Superman is actually living next to you and you will never know it or the next jimi hendrix is following an accountancy carreer because their parents dont want him to be a musician...Discussing "the best" this or that is one hell of a stupid disscusion
This guy sounds better on a practice pad than I do on a full kit!!!
Paranormal-diddle
HAHAHAHA!
Ohhh man i'm dying. 🥲😂

Jean Luc Ponty - "Engimatic Ocean". Early Steve Smith
he made me get up & practice my rudiments!!
Mr Smith is the best commercial for rudiments!
ludicrously superb technician - he's a monster
Steve Smith is an absolute drum master. I love the way he plays a tempo in sick speed with a calm expression, make it looks so easy.
He is fantastic drummer and musician. I believe Steve is a nice human being. 🎶🎶

Steve is probably in my 10 top drummers of all time, always very fun to watch, great musicality, great chops and always educating
Steve puts the diddle in the middle. What a legend. Always a Journey fan but his skills are far more than what paid all the bills.
Absolutely mesmerizing. The speed, timing, and consistency is almost supernatural.
What I love about Steve Smith is that here he showing a jazz approach and has incredible chops, but he could also rock his butt off as evidenced by the performances with the ROCK groups for whom he played. That's the sign of an amazing "all around drummer." I have tremendous respect for Steve.
Speed Smith - always stays relaxed, keeps his sense of humor and knows he’s a bad cat !
Saw Steve live two times.
One thing I've always loved about him is his passion.
He just loves playing those drums...and he continually pushes himself. Quite an inspiration.
I mean how easy does he make this look! And no apparent effort. Genius.
Saw Steve recently here in Santa Cruz (sat directly behind him). He is arguably the most technically proficient drummer in the world right now. Inspired me for sure.

+Suss the Drummer Disagree. My vote goes for Dennis Chambers.

There is no such thing as "best drummer".

Unbelievable!! Steve Smith is incredible.
Biggest influence, thanks for the inspiration
Steve is such a talented musician! and one of my top favourite drummers out there :D
Good. But, like many drummers of this level of proficiency, you made a fundamental error at 5:25.
John Mackay I don't know if you noticed...the video ends at 5:25. That, my dull friend, was this mythical, fundamental error. No more stupid people, please. I hate explaining jokes.
John Mackay No worries. I'm just here to bask in a master's brilliance, like everyone else.
miketacoma5 dumb joke. you're stupid
yeah caught that too- but nobodys perfect
@@miketacoma5 You arrogant prick. If you have to explain your jokes, it's probably because they are shit.

Steve Smith was overlooked as a premier drummer in his days with Journey. Steve has amazing drumming skills!
Steve is amazing. If you slowed that video down you would see that everything Steve does is 100% accurate. I never paid that much attention to Steve while Journey was around, but I am now a major Steve Smith Fan.
