    Turn off the chroma all the way, turn the contrast and brightness all the way down, then bring up the brightness using the PLUGE pattern that is the bottom right hand pattern, until only the right stripe is showing, the left stripe should match the background black. Contrast should be done next with clipping pattern. Spears and Munsil is the best source for a test disc. Bring the contrast up until the power supply begins to clip, then back it off 2 notches, that allows head room for very bright peaks. Then bring up the PLUGE pattern and see if the bars are right. Brightness and contrast push and pull one another.
    You may have to go back and forth several times until you get the best setting for the black and white levels. Then do the color. The method shown with a filter works fine. The sharpness should be done as well. There are patterns for that as well. Shut off all the automatic settings, in the menu. Also a setting for Gamma is needed.

    Hi there, thank you, well explained, great video...However, I do have one question, which video or image do you recommend for doing these tests for a 4k display. The reason I ask, is that you will find many of these on RUclips, but they do look different even if they claim to be for a 4k display. Example, on one video, without manipulating any settings, I can see all the bars on the bottom right, on another video, I see none...so, if possible, can you recommend a link or vid or image that will serve as a proper reference. Thank you!

    This is the NTSC color test, right? If I live in a PAL region is it important to use that color test instead?

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy 4 года назад +3

      It is NTSC, yes. But don't forget that this is an adjustment procedure to get your equipment setup in such a way that it is as closely matched to eachother as possible ánd that monitoring-equipment displays the colours accurately. Most likely, you will end up with a good result no matter when you use SMPTE, EBU or ARIB. It's just a matter of consistency on your equipment and most things in testcards provide insight into the same faults/problems to deal with.
      The only pitfall you could (possibly) encounter is the brightness of the color bars: 75, 95 and 100% can all be used, although the 75% setting is probably deprecated by now (higher values could stress equipment while digital equipment is hardly bothered by full-brightness colour signals)

    Is there a blue test screen on youtube?

    • @TorrentFiend10
      @TorrentFiend10 3 года назад +4

      Probably. However how are you going to play that video on RUclips while putting up a color chart pattern for adjustments at the same time? The good news is you don't really have to worry about this. The adjustments are so minor when it comes to color intent and most displays usually get those very accurate from the factory. Chances are you won't need to adjust it at all. Even if it's minor fine adjustments it's not going to be very far off. They do a good job nailing color intent. The thing you need to be most concerned with is brightness and contrast. This makes the biggest difference. If you don't have a blue filter honestly I would not worry about it. Get brightness and contrast dialed in as good as you can what you could do just using this video honestly.
      Brandison contrast is honestly like 90% of the battle. Sharpness details are usually not that far off and you shouldn't crank them way up because bad things can be added to the image if you do. Probably leave sharpness where it is with any decent TV. Color intent is probably safe as well. It'll definitely be close enough as long as you set your brightness and contrast correctly. If you set your black and white levels well with those two settings everything else will look so much better.

  • @YavNe
    @YavNe 3 года назад +1

    Wow, man! I've had no idea how to calibrate a display! I just knew colors things and you measure them but how it's done. And I never truely understood brightness/contrast setting when the first time booting up a game and it always seemed to be bad image to me when I do what they say like reduce the brightness till the dragon is not visible. THEN I'M NOT GONNA SEE ANYTHING, SCRUB!!! So, I always left them at their default values and now I get that it's to get accurate image. What about other colors though? You didn't show other colors. Are we gonna do the same thing what you did with blue for other colors with same color filter and figure out how to do it following your instructions? If so you didn't fully show it but show us how we can figure out doing the same thing to other colors. But it is to display more color shades, not to get accurate colors. What if we get oversaturated, too much colors like LG's ugly green more so yellow!

  • @colin7225

    If I do this with a 1080p calibration disk and filter and set the colours correctly, will the same settings apply to watching 4k disks? Or Is it different? As the two resolutions use a different colour space.

    • @kil44ua43
      @kil44ua43 2 года назад +1

      it should the only difference would be the resolution of the images aka how many pixels their are I don't see why a different resolution would change the color but take what I say with a grain of salt

    You saved us a lot of headaches from these scammers that calibrate the TV and try to charge arm and a leg cuz nothing's 100% even with the highest end. It's funny because your eyes would adjust to anything after a few minutes of watching TV or does the TV watch you that's the million dollar question.

      I don’t get. A dime in fact it costs me

    • @zombieregime
      @zombieregime Год назад +2

      I mean....they're not all scammers and there is some merit to having a video display calibrated with a proper colorimeter. But that is indeed predicated on the people using one knowing what the hell they're doing. If they do, when they're done youd basically have a certified level of reproductivity for that screen and what it displays will be as close as possible to what came out of the editing room and went off for master printing. However that is not at all saying there arent shysters out there, and ones that work for normally reputable outfits. Welcome to the planet, people suck.
      Also, 90% of 'highest end' products, you're buying the label and some minor tweaks (like some boosted bass and scooped mids to trick your brain into thinking it sounds 'better'). For a good long while there ALL, as in EVERY SINGLE ONE of the, image panels on ANY tv over 35" was made by LG. So no matter what set you bought, literally did not matter, you were getting an LG imaging panel. DO NOT make the mistake of just buying the expensive item (especially at the normal general public shops) and assuming 'I spent all this money it HAS to be good!' Sorry, all it means is they suckered you with flashy box art and a pretty commercial. If you want to get the most out of your things, learn how they work. Why this is better than that, what is the mechanism by which its better, what are its weaknesses, etc. For instance, I have a Vizio as my main monitor, and it works fine for me because all I need is a decently bright and colorful screen for my dark room, and it achieves that in spades! Why buy, say a samsung with hoaky over promised underdelivered qleds (finger waggle) for 4 times the cost, when this one achieves everything I need? Now I have more money to spend on sound, or a computer upgrade (as I use it as a monitor). Wasting money doesnt guarantee you quality, it guarantees everyone seeing that kind of person as a git.
      Lastly, cameras and camera technology 'streaming is still expensive enough to not just willy nilly throw them in TVs, and with the most basic level of networking knowledge and monitoring programs you can check for yourself if a screen is streaming video from it to the outside world (seriously, video streaming is very packet heavy). Besides, they dont have cheap pixel sized lenses yet. A camera would be pretty damn obvious with a simple flashlight, maybe a 3x magnifier. The real issue IMHO is the microphones and always on bluetooth (and microphones embedded in bluetooth remotes....that still have IR.....like, really guys). Bluetooth and wifi can be exploited, the amount of bluetooth devices in general that have microphones in them (because of design reuse) is too damn high (at least mention on the box there is one in there FFS), and in the age we have our smartphones near us all the time, why doesn my remote need a microphone for voice commands linked to AI foe some fucking reason that literally no one asked for, Samsung? But the worst of the worst is all the calling home smart TVs do. For some reason graph.facebook.com needs to know every filename on any USB I plug into my TV......Because that isnt an abuse of privacy at all. 'but they use that to feed you adds for that media or similar' Yes I know how advertising works, thank you. Well, thats not how ads that are going to work work for me. And it only spurs me to add those URLs that phone home to a DNS level block list. Any request for those domains returns 'domain not found' Because fuck them! They shot themselves in the foot and have made themselves the enemy. I, and I encourage others too also, will always block, interfere and otherwise fill their metrics stream full of garbage anyways I can. Because they crossed the line, smiling at me like im dumb while they did it....

Not very intelligent to put down a pattern used to calibrate TVs as useless if you are trying to use it to adjust your PC monitor. It's not the same thing.
