Venmar - I’m completely floored. Every time I sit down to watch The Last Of Us it gives me a completely different expereience and tonight was no different. Even though the first 2 episodes did a lot of stuff that is very faithful to the game, it was tonight’s episode that I really felt it. The bond between Joel and Ellie is The Last Of Us. That’s the whole game. Zombies, hunters, Fireflies, none of it is the actual game. Joel and Ellie are, and this was the first episode that made me feel like I was right there in that world because of it. What did you guys think?

After 20 years of just surviving, we saw the man from the start of Ep1, the guy who loved that his daughter constantly took the piss out of him.

While not as exciting, this episode was still great. As someone who’s never played the games, I fell in love with Joel and Ellie this episode. I absolutely adore their relationship. That is clearly the heart of the show and I’m ok with them spending an episode mostly on that. And even though there was less action, I was still on edge the entire time. I feel like at any moment something could pop out at attack, and that makes for a really enjoyable experience. I think they’ve done a phenomenal job with this show
I get some people not really resonating with the Kathleen character, and I myself didn’t love her, but there’s something very interesting about this completely normal, not intimidating woman being the leader of whatever faction of people this is. So while maybe it doesn’t quite click as well as it could, I appreciate the angle they’re going with. It also makes them feel less like an oppressive faction and more like a community who wants to protect one another. And I think that has value
This is definitely a slower episode but as John says, it’s extremely important for the show to build off of. Not everything can be fast bang action; episodes like this are necessary. I feel like the next episode is gonna be a lot of action and it’s going to be really great.
Also I’m super fuckin excited to see that underground monster or whatever the hell it is

Ever feel like they have a hat full of taglines like "most heartfelt last of us episode" and "most exciting last of us episode yet" and they just choose at random. I liked this episode alot but It definitely felt like the whole point was for the show to play catch up with Joel and ellies relationship. I thought right from the start even when they weren't cool yet Joel and ellies relationship felt like it was growing. It seems like the show didn't really focus on that until this episode. One thing I didn't like was how they had that lady kill their only doctor. He's the only person who knows where Henry might be but then she gets so mad that Henry potentially killed three of her men that she kills their only lead. It made her seem like an angry little kid.

It's not though. We're barely at the middle of the season. Getting to Tommy's is about the halfway point or a little more than halfway through the game. We're right on schedule. Remember, this is an adaptation. There's plenty of time left to tell the important story beats that are left to tell. We're not going to get the gameplay sections. It was sweet and endearing, and that's because they kept peeling their layers and almost got to the core of their vulnerability. Almost, but you know it's coming. I enjoyed it the most so far. As for the laughing scene, I think this solidified for me how different this Joel and Ellie are. Which is fine, they're great together. They're A Joel and Ellie, and I'm willing to roll with that. But comparing it to the game ones, that laughing scene felt so out of character. Felt too soon for both of them, and Joel almost giggling just felt like Pedro. He's a very giggly guy. So I was seeing Pedro and it kind of took me out of it.
I think Craig Maizin is neglecting the action-y side of things a bit too much as well. In the after show last week one of you guys said that the casual fans might not yet feel why Joel is such a big deal. He didn't impress too much in episode 2, and here he kills two guys with a rifle and them immediately is defeated physically by one guy. Even the punching scene in episode one was just like a feral PTSD style reaction. 4 episodes in, I fear Joel doesn't feel like this intimidating force that he should be, and I'm saddened by that. He should definitely still be human, him having a bad right ear is interesting, but I think too much of a crutch so far in the show when he hasn't really impressed physically in almost any way :/ I hope next episode they let Joel cook.

I thought this episode was another solid B overall. I am sensing a pattern (at least for me) in which the odd numbered episodes of the show (the premiere and episode 3) were A-grade episodes, whereas the even numbered ones (episode 2 and this episode) were a step-down, but still solid.
I think the magazine gag was better delivered in the game, to be perfectly honest. As much as I overall love the show, I do feel the stuff they pull verbatim from the game was better delivered and executed, though to be fair, that may very be because there's the animation vs. live-action push and pull aspect (yes, I said animation, it's based on a video game, and video games are animation at their core) in which the delivery had to be more subtle to suit live-action.
That being said, it's still high quality television. The highlight of this episode for me was the last interaction between Joel and Ellie at the end when she made him laugh at the bad diarrhea pun. I will stick through this series until the end!

But I do somewhat agree, she should have done something like attempt speaking at a lower and deeper register, just to try and create some extra distance between those two performances. I doubt people who have never seen Two and a Half Men will have that same problem, though.

Also, if you use the Infected too much, you rob them of their effectiveness. Remember how they introduced the first Bloater in the game? Memorable, yes, but after they kept using them later on, they became a case of diminishing returns in terms of effectiveness, but that made sense, because it was a video game. It had to share its storytelling with gameplay.
For a television audience, on the other hand? It makes sense to use the Infected sparingly. If they used them all the time I massive combat against hordes scene, then the show would run into a trap of diminishing returns in terms of overall effectiveness.
Also remember, what set The Last of Us as an IP apart from the other zombie media is the focus on the relationships of the people and how dicey of an idea to hold relationships in this world is. Least favorite episode and a little worried about the changes made to Sam's character seem unnecessary. Also J&E sometimes give super flat line deliveries like they are reading it off a queue card with no emotion to it, especially thought about this in the Truck with the Magazine in contrast to the games voice actors.

1st and 2nd episodes were pretty good but the 3rd and 4th were kinda boring. I was hoping this first season was on par or better than the first season of the Walking Dead. So far it is not. Here’s to hoping it picks up with episode 5 and forward.

Episode 3 was completely pointless to the main story. What happened that was important to either Joel or Ellie? I’m sorry, and no this isn’t me being a homophobe, but it was a bad episode. I would say the same thing and most other people would finally agree then, if it was a straight man and woman love story. Just pointless

Based on the reviews I read, people who loved episode 3 hated episode 4 while people who hated episode 3 loved episode 4. I hope episode 5 and the rest of the show won't divide the fans just like episodes 1 and 2.

If you haven't played the game this episode was really dumb, they drive into a town and then they hide in a building, they havent portrayed joel as broken enough for him laughing to be a great scene, basically both the jokes ellie told were kind of funny, other than that i got nothing out of this episode, these two do not survive a trek across zombie apocalypse america, less realistic than superman, joel let his guard down in an extremely dangerous situation, in a zombie apocalypse you look over your shoulder every 2 seconds.

I find this episode to be lackluster; it doesn't progress the story and it doesn't have enough character development or character exploration (like the last episode) to be worthwhile. Furthermore, other post-apocalyptic shows, namely The Walking Dead, do a better job of depicting ragtag groups that engage in amoral behavior for survival.

Doesnt progress the story? Did you Watch the right ep? It progressed in every way, literally (Miles away), and emotionally, rethink How story telling Works Man, you might be missing something

This episode was like entirely character development, or more specifically, the development of a relationship between the two main characters, which is essential for the show
