- EP.44 Our 4x4 tyres are too dangerous for us to travel. So we sit on the Murray River in Waikerie & wait for our new kevlar Black Bear Muddy's to arrive from Earthcruiser. While we wait Karl runs you through the issues we are having with the 4x4 Truck Gladiator mud tyres. He also explains what to look for if you own these tyres. We get our new Kevlar Black Bear Mud tyres fitted in Waikerie by Tyre Power who are amazing and fit us in asap so we can hit the road. Full time travel at a standstill for the moment.

My 35 or so years experience of 4x4 travel is that buying anything other than a premium brand tyre always works out more expensive in the long term if you include wear life, premature failures and punctures in the economics. Unfortunately I think you have simply repeated the mistake buying Black Bear, but by the time you find out it will be too late.
Hi Guy totally agree but there is no other tyre option for the vehicle at this stage. Fingers crossed the BB will be a bit better 🤞🏻

@@nowhereboundtouring Strange that multiple brands are having the same issues on these vehicles. Not just the 2 you have mentioned but others are well. Im thinking there must be an underlying issue. Even the premium brands have had the same problems
I think the reason is that the 17” tyres have never been subjected to the loads that you have with a light truck. They have generally been installed on light 4WD vehicles. We were operating them closer to their stated load limit, but they all should be able to perform at their specified limit. Their life may be reduced a bit, operating at full load all the time, but they should not fail prematurely.
The tyres we currently have installed appear to have no issues at all ( they do have a higher load rating than the 17” tyres).
I believe that the manufactures have just been overstating / stretching the tyre specifications, to capture some of the heavier vehicle market.

You are not always to be envied.
It's true that good tires are enormously important, especially with your tracks and the situation in Australia. From the past, when I was a senior site manager for many years, I always tried to get the multi-chamber tires for the military off-road vehicles. I never had any problems with them, no matter where, in the mud, dirt, on gravel, or concrete and asphalt. Were unfortunately always very expensive.

Working in the transport industry, I have found that Chinese (Taiwanese in your case) tires are never in production for long. They know there tires will fail so only make a certain amount. Then when the failures start occurring they are no longer in production so NO WARRANTY. Be aware of Chinese tires.

Stationed in Exmouth W A 74-76, loved it! We ran a modified CJ5, and an F250 4x4 all over. Since retiring from the military in 90, I've put 263,000 miles on an FX4 F250 Superduty Powerstroke diesel. I run that truck on every jeep trail in 3 states and have settled on TOYO tires, 10 ply, Wild Country or Open Country. Hope that helps you.

The tyres are faulty and I'd be looking for a full refund due to a major fault under Australian Consumer Law.
You call tell the tyre pressures are good from the tyre wear IMO.

20/32nds of an inch is 15.875mm. I'd say they were never 20 mm, more likely 20/32 nds and the web site got it wrong.

i believe it's an incompatibility between the rim and the rim protector on the tyre. compounded by the weight of the truck flexing the bead area of the sidewall more. if there isn't a gap between the rim and the rim protector you tend to get issues it works like a fulcrum to push against the sidewall and bead. and the gladiators have a 19/32" tread depth which is 15mm.
You’ve put 4WD tyres on a truck, not only that you’ve put mud tyres on, which are designed to spend 80% of their time in mud and dirt, and then drove several thousand kilometres on hot blacktop. I don’t think it is failure of the tyres but more to do with wrong tyres for the job. The damage looks consistent with overloading and overheating. It’s a truck run truck tyres, 8ply minimum, look at what they run on Unimogs. Wow that sidewall distortion putting the new tyres on is unbelievable, these guys don’t fit tyres this size often a truck tyre place would have fitted them without the distortion and possibly advised more appropriate tyres based on the weights.

My first thought before you mentioned the response was that the tyres were overloaded. Looking at the specs for the XComps you are probably well over double their LR.
With respect to Xcomp the tyre wasn't the issue, they should have never fitted been to your vehicle.
Hi Richard, the tyres were not overloaded. We specifically had to get these as they were the correct tyre for the weight etc. Tyres for you even said that the tyres should be able to handle double the load limit anyway. We are within the specs. Cheers and thanks for watching Katty
There’s two indicators on 4WD tyres one is for performance in a 4WD condition and the other is for road use. The other thing with imported tyres is some are designed to have a bead lock ring that hold the tyres on the rim. The bead lock isn’t like drag cars and have bolts going through the tyres into the rim. The best advice anyone can give you is buy tyres made for Australian conditions and you’ll have a safer tyre that want leave you in the spot you have found yourself in. Sorry you are in that position I had a similar problem with aftermarket 4WD mag wheels and the tyre shop I went to for a wheel alignment and balance rotation didn’t use a tension wrench and torque the wheel nuts to the correct tension and one wheel came undone and broke 3 bolts and stripped another with two nuts holding the wheel on. My wife had just got home from driving around for three hours with our 3 kids and when I got in the car to go to the shop this is when it all happened luckily because she wouldn’t have noticed until it was to late. The tyre shop was accusing the wheel company and said I would have to pay for it to be fixed and luckily I was able to contact the wheel manufacturer and they were saying the same thing as I was with them not torquing the wheel nuts to the specific pressure and this was completely there fault and now I ask the people fitting wheels to my cars if they torqued them to the correct amount.
buying expensive tyres doesn't give a guaranteed problem free run either guys. I had two sets of those expensive C word tyres on my 100 series and both sets failed within 25ookm because they fractured all around the rim edge and actually leaked air. When we pulled them off the rims it was bloody scary to see just how close they came to peeling apart around the beads. AND, according to the C word company mine were the only ones to have the issue and they cheerfully replaced both sets without a drama. Right now there is a recall out for cooper and micky thompson tryes so be aware folks, money doesn't buy quality nowdays

Don't blame the Gladiators, they are not alone with this problem. We've had our NPS300 on the road since 2013 running 35x12.5R16.5 tyres. We started out with Interco tyres that we imported ourselves from USA. After suffering the same blistering and subsequent blowouts we had them replaced by Interco but of course I still had to pay for the import costs and the considerable delay. The next set of five were no better. At one point we ran out of tyres in Darwin and the only option was BF Goodrich in a lower load rating but at least they were available. The road temperatures were through the roof, too hot for me to change a wheel on the bitumen road verge. We blew the first rear tyre before Camooweal. The front ones lasted quite well. I tried a claim through BFG but after putting it over the weigh bridge it was shown that our rear axle load was too high for these tyres. After the BFG tyres I bought a set of bias ply tyres in a higher load rating than the Interco tyres. They handled the weight and traveled fine but every time we took off from cold we had four tyres with a flat side that took at least 5km to start to go round again.
In October 2018 I purchased a set of 17" wheels and Hankook 129Q rated 37x12.5R17 tyres from AAT4x4 in Queensland. These tyres gave us a 6.5T load rating and seemed to handle the load much better. In February of this year we were returning from Perth lightly loaded when the rear axle developed a vibration. On closer inspection one of the Hankooks had gone out of round with a section of the tread higher on one side. I removed it straight away and continued home to Cue.
When I contacted AAT4x4 to claim warranty I was told that there was none because the tyres were over two years old. Hankook cover their tyres for 5 years down to the wear limit but because AAT4x4 are not a legitimate Hankook dealer we don't have warranty protection.
I believe the tyres simply overheat, delaminate and eventually explode giving you quite an exciting few minutes because when one corner drops the height of these sidewalls in an instant it's scary. Phil
Hearing you Phil, the tyres have not performed as a normal customer would expect i.e lasting their tread life without a catastrophic defect. The tyres were operated within the manufactories specifications, So they should perform as one would expect. Feel terrible that you have had the same experience as us. its not a tyre defect , they are overloaded , all issues stem to too much weight for that tyre , glad you spotted it , higher load rating tyre will do the trick

Absolutely hence we didn't first tyres were $500 each and all that was available at the time. Our new ones have kevlar in them and are $1400 each. Cheers Katty
FYI. We had those Gladiators on one of our RFS Cat 1 4x4 5 ton tankers. The load carrying capacity was way over optimistic and we were told by the Council depot to never go above 80kph as they heat up badly.

Unfortunately it seems that the tyre companies can almost do what they want, when it comes to durability and load ratings. If there is any issues, it is always the customers fault……

Bloody yank here a few months ago there was a Brush fire truck build article about outback proof or at least really better tires and rims are installed .Just for 4x4 s in the 8 ton class with single rears ,find building company of those Bushfire trucks and see if you can purchase from them a set to continue your journey.

I just thought to say this about tire recall .in canada about 15 years back , BF Goodrich a tire company put out a recall on thier rough country tires and even to this day if you have them on your vehicle any tire shop will replace them with a better newer tire free of charge . I have had 12 tires replaced on 3 4x4 trucks. In the last 15 years . I bought a beat up chev truck about 3 years ago just because it had those tires on it and I knew I would get new tires at the first tire shop I drove into . The truck was 600$and the new tires were 1370$with taxes it was a no brainer . That truck was stripped for parts and went of to the crusher for scrap metal. I now have a complete set of new tires mounted balanced and ready to go play in the Bush with plus parts to fix whatever I break . Good luck and safe traveling .

You will find that the tread blocks on most aggressive tires sink into the tire carcass after a thousand K's or so.

I think the top speed of the new tyres is now 90 kph as opposed to the Gladiators at 160 kph. It could be worth looking at the tyre placard to see if it complies otherwise a picky insurance company could look for excuses.
I think you're right. On the sticker it had '134 Load Rating G'. I believe the G is the speed rating which is 90 kph.
the 137 is the load rating and the M is the speed rating which is 130kmh

Never seen tyres do that, that's total delamination around the bead, you're absolutely right when you say that's a no-warning blow out! Hopefully you have contacted the manufacturer and they will offer a refund - hopefully full. Best get a new set of different tyres on the truck and get the fronts on the spare rack until you can replace them too. Good luck!

@@nowhereboundtouring Personally I'd be running all new tyres, as having the dodgy ones on the steering axle will result in control loss in the event of a blow out (rear blow out is a lot less "dangerous" as the vehicle still drives basically where you were going...). so have a think of that, it also resigns the paranoia to the spare carrier instead of the constant checking, that has to be better for your mental health too. Great that you're moving again though! :-)
Those tire fitters had their work cut for them. Feel sorry for the guys that need to change the tires on my work truck. 52x16 R20 Michelin XZL.

I would say it maybe your load rating! Or the tire is getting to hot. What does the tire company say about it ! X comp ? Also check how many plies your side walls are. You may have a low rating ply on the side wall and it’s wearing it out from the the constant rocking side to side back-and-forth. That’s my two cents.

Great to see you got the tyres replaced okay, though that sidewall delamination around the bead is rather sobering. Like others we will be interested to see what the supplier has to say. I suspect the claim those tyres have a design limit that is twice their service load rating is an exaggeration. Tchaikovsky and the Murray is a very nice combination it has to be said. Having fitted tyres for years it has to be said. You really do get what you pay for never saw many failures in any of the major brands stand on any Aussie road barefoot it will inflict instant misery the hurt put on your tyre's is about ten fold demand to be fully refunded they are obviously not fit for purpose good luck

Gladiator did refund us an agreed amount. They took their time, 6 months or so, but they did.
We now have truck tyres, and no more issues, except they do not perform as well in mud and sand.

In my experience, they are not suitable for a heavier truck. If you just them mainly on an unloaded truck, for week end 4x4 and light touring, they should be ok. If you have similar use to us, then I would be very concerned.

We have now heard of several similar experiences, with people that have heavier trucks. Our new wheels seem robust. Just completed the Birdsville track with no issues. It was very rocky. On road they are good.

I had one blow the inside side wall backing into the shed on my "60"LC! The car was parked on lino! The rip was around 8" long from the tread to the rim! The first time that happened to me in 40 years. The tyre seller, I have a good report with, had not seen anything like that and replaced it with another make right away no problems and a special deal for new ones of different make. balancing of the Gladiator M/T tyres was near impossible as well and they wore like crazy, less than 10mm tread left. They had done less than 10k, no hard tracks and proper pressure. The rest of them are now on a wrecker 60 series! I do not trust them.
Wow! scary stuff, we have had so many balancing issues also drove us crazy. Weights just won't stay in place. I wouldn't trust them either

I’ve had a bad experience with Mickey Thompson mtz p3 cracking and Tares in between the pattern lugs
I thought I’d have them looked at by their tyre “except” they sent me to and that guy said excessive power is the problem
Lol I drive the vehicle in a responsible way and it’s my family car it’s a 105 series Landcruiser 1fzfe they don’t have excessive power the people at exclusive tyres denied me if any warranty this damage was all found in the first 500ks and the tyres look to be worsening

I had a bad tire situation with a set of semi truck trailer tires ...
The extreme wear was due to the rubber curing process wasn't correct or complete... A brand new set of tires Wore down to the wire in less than a 150 miles

I could be wrong but too me the rim looks too narrow for the tyre with that amount of weight with the tyre curling inward so much at the point of rim it’d create a large amount of heat in the bead area if it happens again with your new tyres I’d try either a narrower tyre or a wider rim let us know if it happens again on a different tyre hopefully not and happy travels 😬

Seems the Tire is too wide for the rim putting uneven pressure on the edge of the sidewall, ive had glads for years, on the second set now, first set of 35x12.5r15 I got 60,000 ks and I put them to good use in the high country and long distances, only problem I seen from them were they tear at the sidewall lugs after allot of ks.

Hi, I have an off road Isuzu nps 75/155 that I drive @7.5t all the time. I run toyo m608z and so does “top wire traveller” and I have no problems with them.

Hi our tyres are 37x13.5r17 had the same as Topwire Traveller but wanted more off road ability so went to the Gladiators. We use davinci resolve for editing 👍
I have BF Goodrich ko2 the wear is awesome and no issues , they have just become slightly noisy at 100k, highly recommend 👍

You do realise that a m/t tyre is not designed for road use hence the worn down tyres so quickly and they wouldn't be designed to take that much heat, also the separation could be due to the weight of the vehicle could exceed the tyres capacity, just thought.

Curious why you didn't put the 4 black bears on the truck and keep the gladiators as spares?
Hi James, our thought was the front is the only position that would be suitable to run the gladiators due to the lower load. We won't to get our moneys worth out of them and wear them down. Black bears can go in any position hence two being spares. Cheers Karl

When you are aired down, how much do you reduce speed? Do any of the manufacturers publish data about de-rating tyres when underinflated. Also does load rating vary with rim width? I have similar concerns to you, but can't find anything scientific about how reduced pressure impacts the performance of the tyres.
Hi Darren, we always reduce speed when reduce pressure. How much? too conditions. The more we deflate the less speed. No data that we know of about load vs pressure. But they do state maximum load is at maximum pressure and I assume that will be at the maximum speed rating of the tyre. Rim width will be specified by the tyre specifications, if you go outside that don't know the ramifications.
The whole lot is pretty vague but as soon as you present a warranty claim it appears they just say the tyres tell the story. So they say you have operated out of parameters.

I wonder if they are generally useful for running with reduced pressures. My gut feel says that pressure, load and speed are all related in a way that if you halve pressure, you have to do the same to speed, or halve load.
wow, I was looking at the gladiators for my iveco. one Google search and was quickly turned away. check out the review from the boys at eva. also, I had the exact same thing happen to a set of Hankook. now running nankangs.

Interested to know what Hankook said about that, I’ve been running the Hankooks for years with no problem. But currently waiting on the black bear Kevlar 37/12.5 because they’re 131Q and still 12.5 because 13.5 doesn’t fit the Iveco
@@Turtle11086 yep, blew out 2 side walls. didn't bother going to Hankook about it. I also found out that there not light truck rated.
I’ve had a few blow outs on the Hankooks too, always on the rear, I put it down to them being overloaded.
Man that is real bad luck but it does illustrate that people should stick to the established well know and proven brands . I like Yokohama Japanese made tyres and they have never let me down . You are very wise not to keep driving on those faulty tyres a blowout at speed could be catastrophic .

I’m on my third set off six gladiators couldn’t be happier with mine I drive all conditions I work remote top end , I didn’t see tyre balancing beads installed ? They are a must if you ask me I also rotate every 5 k

Nowhere Bound Touring yea beads are the go I must have missed seeing them go in when the guys were fitting them . I’m running at five ton and 47 psi on road . My latest set have 7k on them now just checked them , all good , you guys have me worried now , good to know though cheers . Before gladiators I had two sets off Dyna pro Mt hankooks , I put them through hell great tyre even better price . Hope you guys have better luck with the Blackbears (I’ve not heard any bad reports ) and hope the gladiator importer helps you out , I’m sure they will as there tyres are everywhere now . Been running the gladiator xcomps for many years, never had any issues 80k plus on each set, awesome on and offroad. Such a pity you've had a bad experience.

Interesting about the Gladiators. I recently changed to these from a different brand that had cracking appear on the side walls. Very concerning and was only made aware after a tyre recall Alert. Will be interested to see how you guys go with the BlackBears.

Did you speak to ATW about it? They would be interested in this info and might be able to help lubricate the gears for a warranty refund.
@@SUPERTRUCKER166 I received a pro rata wear rate discount on the Gladiators. So far they have been fine. I do run them at lower road pressures for comfort and don't particularly notice any negative effects from that. There is no affiliation with ATW as i deal with a different supplier.
These same tyres came on one of the Iveco Daily’s we have at work. Haven’t got anything good to say about them. Seems like no one else does either

I hope you have better luck with your new Tyres from Earth Cruiser if you get anything back from the Gladiator supplier it will only make up the difference on purchase of the new ones but also watching this video the new tyre being fitted was put on dry with no lube or soap?

ok im not an expert being a tyre fitter but from my experience the tires are wearing pretty standard as your using a soft compound mud terrain for onroad use. as for your sidewalls.....well im gonna take a stab in the dark here and guess your not using the correct weight rated tires for your rig which looks heavy asf. if your at the max load rating then i suggest you may be overloading.
You can see in the video the tyres have a load rating of 131. This allows 1950 kgs per tyre or nearly 8 tonne for the vehicle. I'm not sure what it weighs, or how the load is distributed, but I don't think the tyres are severely underrated.

You may find that someone has imported some tyres at the right price. Which would be European winter rated. Can't handle speed or heat.

you would think 7.8 t capcity on those gladiators would be suffienct but now with 9.2t on those black bears you shouldnt have any issues.

@@nowhereboundtouring it would be good if the some of the name brand manufacturers would have higher load ratings for this reason. I don't mind lesser known tyres as long as they actually perform but to have issues like that, its not brilliant. I've accidentally snake bitten a k02 on my old Forester and moved it from front to back for obvious reasons but it never caused me any issues, maybe the gladiators might not have survived that sort of accident or have actually blown out down the road.
You bought Chinese tires for an overland rig? Maybe buy a quality tire and eliminate these issues. I have ran 37x13.50 17 Toyo tires at or above the load rating for years. Broken wheels but never had a single issue with tires. That goes for the tires made in Japan and the USA. Tires are just not worth going cheap. Glad you didn't have an accident from catastrophic failure.
Hi jc May I ask the load rating on your Toyo’s? As we certainly only picked what was available at the time we purchased the truck and the gladiators are what was recommended from the overland truck builder we purchased from. We are not in the habit of going cheap hence the truck and caravan. Cheers Katty
I had Linglong tyres once on a Mazda Ute. At 6 years old they delaminated and fell apart with over half their tread left. Absolute garbage.
Linglong tyres are bad even when they are new
6 years is good we only got 27000 kms less than a year 👍
I feel sorry for Gladiator's reputation at the moment. Seriously. 37's on a truck that's probably meant to run 9.5R17.5 or similar. I know the load rating is probably right but any big tyre with wide bead ridges aired down with that much weight and on those type of rims will generate lots of heat in the bead area. No tyre running that type of bead stands a chance at those odds. Get a tyre that doesn't run a bead lip or change the rims for a rounder edge.
If we only wanted for the shops cheese cutters would be fine but for the bush we need bigger. The tyres were rated for the weight and uses hence we purchased after they were recommended to us by an overland truck producer. Cheers Katty

Hi Yvon, I don’t know manufacturing date on the recalled gladiators that Karl mentioned. Our ones have not been recalled but many people have had the same issues so we are finding we got them in December 2019 cheers Katty

Thanks for watching, unfortunately the Gladiators were the only ones available for our weight and came recommended at the time. The new tyres have been designed by Earthcruiser Australia and are 14ply Kevlar so hopefully they will be better, they also have a higher weight spec. Cheers Katty
