- Lyle, along with the Tonight Show's large band, sings "What Do You Do" with Francine Reed. This was their first appearance on the show and Johnny liked them so much that he had them both back the following month to perform TWO songs.
Love them as a duo. They are both lead singers with incredible tone and timber. What I wouldn't do for a live concert with Francine and Lyle today.
Francine Reed and Lyle Lovett are , along with the Large Band, among the best musicians I ever saw live, and still enjoy on records.
An honor to play with Francine for years...she's got IT! 💜
Can we just appreciate that Lyle, when given his first, and as far as he knew, only opportunity to appear on one of the most important TV shows for making stars, chose to share it with another fabulous performer in her own right. How many other artist would have had as much class and balls to do that?
Absolutely. I love that Lyle recognized the song was better sung with Francine, than alone. Francine was perfect: tone and pitch.
Amazing.
So cool that he keeps this music alive
When a woman can sing like that..
It activates parts of my soul I never knew existed..
Their chemistry was off the charts!!! LOOOOOVE then together; they compliment each other well.
My favorite Lyle appearance on Carson was the time he showed up with short hair, acting very dejected. Carson finally asked him about the new look, and after a moment Lyle said something like "well, I guess you should never get your hair cut when you're drunk." I thought Carson was going to fall out of his chair, he was laughing so hard.
The one and only time I was in Paris I was walking down a street at night - passed a club named "Le Jazz Hot" - sign outside said (in French) "performing tonight Francine Reed" !!!
I LOVE Miss Francine. What a cool lady.
I was 4 years old when this song came out and I remember my mother playing it on our record player. Great artist abs very under appreciated.
Your mother raised you well.
I had no idea this existed. It's like tripping over a gold nugget somewhere.
I never knew her name...all theses years I shouldda remembered....Thank YOU Francine!!!
I saw this when it aired - Always great performers.
Wow. Love them both!
I think I remember seeing this when it originally aired. My other favorite song by him and I love their sassy interplay.

I’m a huge Lyle Lovett fan. And my friends all say, is he that guy who married Julia Roberts?
Julia Roberts thought he looked like Abraham Lincoln
