Well done review. I’m a petrol head myself and a serial 911 owner, but sold my 964Turbo and my dd Insignia and got myself a 4S+ last Friday. Driving home from collecting it I felt sick and shaking from shock and horror to what the Taycan represents to us petrol heads and to Porsche (2 syllables). It’s simply put just the best car in the world right now! My only thought driving home was: “What on earth do I need my manual 991T for now???” The Taycan is just so tactile and smooth, refined, fast, utterly devoid of rattles and squeaks in the interior, it’s just mind blowing!
After that initial shock to my system though, we’ve set out on a 2 car, 3000km road trip, where me and my wife and two boys swap seats every 2hrs between the cars and it strikes me that the perfect combination Porsche, is an electric 5-seater do-it-all Taycan and a manual modern 911 as an escort car, not completely relying on this new technology.
Getting into the T, the rawness, loud exhaust, bouncy stiff drive and darty behavior just put a BIG hysterical grin on my face, while the Taycan just makes me go OOOOOOHHHHHH, mouth wide open....
Charging infrastructure in Norway is very good and we’ve just completed now 720 of the 3000kms over the last 3 days and the range is excellent, in both cars, skipping plenty of the charging stations along the way. We left home with 100% charge and a full tank of 62 liters of petrol and the return is 17.2kw/100km on the Taycan needing only 2 charges and the T rollled into the city of Trondheim with 5 liters remaining, sipping only 7,5L/100km. The cost of refueling the Taycan at roadside stations is only ~1/2 the petrol powered car. Charging at home my estimate shows it will cost 1/50th of the cost of the petrol car, although not tried in practice yet.
Just a few wrongs to correct and some clarifications. The 4S+ does 0-62mph in 3.8 sec. The panoramic roof eats into headspace and at 180cm my hair is brushing the frame of the pano roof. Not in my sunroof delete Taycan which looks infinitely better, with the bubble roof and without the contrasting black roof on a lighter shade car. The 21" wheels are shod in GoodYear tires as opposed to Michelin PS4 on the 4S. BIG difference to the Turbo I drove two days ago. The Turbo also didn’t feel that much faster at 3.2 sec 0-100, and the bigger wheels and motor robs you of considerable range, requiring 21,6kw/100km as opposed to 17.2kw/100km. The white caliper PSCB’s need considerable heat to work properly and I nearly rear ended a car not knowing this. The pedal feel is much better on the red caliper 4S brakes, and the pedal travel much shorter. On the PSCB’s I managed to bottom out on the pedal. Initial thoughts were the PSCB’s were defective. As did the Turbo owner think first time he drove them. The 360 surround view camera is crap. The electric charge door looses the open wind channels in the wings blocking off with a plastic “vent”. The Innodrive is just to avoid, and the passenger screen is just a laugh and an annoying distraction to the driver. The Race Tex interior is cool looking, but the regular interior leather seats are more comfy. The 4-zone climate is not necessary. In fact just an annoyance to a petimeter who needs symmetry in his life. Sport Design digs into ground clearance, increasing the danger of scraping the front splitter.
In short, get a soberly equipped Taycan 4S on 20” rims and you’ve got the best car in the world.
Thanks for a superb video! I bet you found the Taycan a better car than the 812 Superfast😉

You really hit the nail on the head with your final thoughts, electric cars just make more sense for daily driving. While you have ICE cars for the excitement, EV's just have something soothing about them that makes driving more relaxing.

Had my 4s a few days now after owning a DB11. I agree with your position on styling. Love the back but jury out on the front. The Dolomite Grey is a bit drab. Infotainment is great and interior with full leather is quality. The car is very wide and long and you have to be careful on narrow roads with the white van man coming at you. With so many Porsche cars on the road these days they aren’t very exclusive anymore particularly when comparing to a DB11 which always attracts attention. In summary missing the DB11 but loving the tax benefits and running costs.

Thanks for the feedback Philip. I think an electric car is good as a daily runabout, especially if you don't do long distances. A naturally aspirated V12 will never get boring and good as a weekend treat.

Mark: I've seen a lot of car videos and many Taycan videos. I must say that this was probably the most professionally done and presented the car honestly. I'm going to call it the "Porsche" of car videos. I too was enthralled with the ride quality and I too believe it looks too much like a Panamera and too little like the concept car. I bought a 4S anyway even though I told myself if it's a Panamera rather than my 991 I won't. I have passed the age of needing to hear the scream of the engine over 7,000 and enjoy the electric car quietness. I have a Volt and that's why I considered a Taycan. If I could get Porsche build quality and performance with electric car quietness and smoothness, I was there. You have a great facility as a sponsor, which makes me wish I had one that nice near me that handled the range of cars that yours handles. The one thing I missed about your video was the range. You stated a VERY wide range up front, then didn't discuss range. I know you didn't have the car long enough to do a range test, but others have and a little discussion on that topic would have been great and the KW/100km that you achieved during your test period would have been nice to hear. Thanks for a GREAT video with very professional production.

Driving like a madman gets me over 40-45 kWh/100km in my Turbo S. Today i rode back from work 85km in slight traffic (thanks corona) doing 145-165 km/h when the road was free and a couple of 230-240km/h peaks on the last segment in Germany and my final consumption was 27 kWh/100km. After 170 km of road i came home with a residual range of 166km according to the car (which with my driving style is more like 120). I hope this helps.

I like the presentation. Only the acceleration number is not quite correct: your first table has 0-60, your second table has the correct 0-62 number, later you mention 0-60 again (which should be about 0.2 s less), so it is a bit inconsistent.
The wheels are the ones with the best range according to Porsche, which might have been a factor to consider for the owner.

Panoramic roofs are great, I’ve had them in every car but in the winter ❄️ with a leather interior they make the car a bloody freezer 🥶 they need a blind (more appropriately called a winter cover) the heat loss makes it soooo long before the car interior warms up🧥 heated seats front and rear are a must have necessity
And who buys a poverty spec car... go for a 4S with every optional extra

until we can compensate longer charging time ie (vs combustion cars fueling time) with at least double the range of an average tank ..electric cars wouldn't cut it as an alternative for US commute
for example i drive from Daytona beach to Miami and back about 3 times a week which is not too bizarre of a Florida weekend drive..300 miles

    • @jamiea8318
      @jamiea8318 4 года назад

Why would the range have to be double? Also, charge times are quite quick on these. Not only is a 40min break practically needed every 3-4hr of driving, but shouldn't take too much creativity to fill. And that will be significantly lower with 800v charging.

As a purist I really do not like the route that Porsche has taken the last years. They have totally fallen for the climate. Yes. We should respect the climate, but JUST turbos in a 911 for example. For me. Porsche is pre 2015.
