@@mirific29 thank you for this... Domingo IS indeed glorious and as an Italian myself I do like him IMMENSELY and not so much Pavarotti (go figure)... however for this particular piece I find Daniels unparalleled. Domingo is too "fiery" and the color of his voice and the way his vowels are opened/closed etc. are less indicated for this piece which in my opinion requires a more "castrato" type of voice, sort of more "androgynous", rounded... Daniels is absolute perfection, in every small detail and he's not even Italian yet his prononciation is perfect. I think Fagioli would be perfect as well - he's not Italian either (lol) - but has that more sophisticated voice, suitable for this piece. Daniels adds more body to the voice, counterbalancing the ephemeral type. Sorry for my crappy English.
There are lots of wonderful countertenors with very sweet voices. What I love so much about Daniels voice is the character of his timbre: There is an quality to his voice that makes me think of a fine old viola or cello: an open mellowness and a rich depth, even in the high ranges... The timbre is so even throughout his entire range. He'll always be a favorite.
The song is not devoted to a tree, but to the shade it provides to a king tired of battling. Why should people only write romantic songs to human beings? Animals and trees also deserve our deepest feelings. I love this Aria! And all what Händel ever wrote.
Love is omnipotent. Not only to humans and animals, but to anything created by the nature and humans skills. I love my jewelry and my guns as it were living creatures. Yes sounds Strange but I feel a kind of tenderness for my Beretta gun. And to some kind of civil aircraft.
@@susanflaster8900 Wrong! In the aria Xerxes sings about the shade the tree provides. It's in the introductory recitative that he talks about the plane tree, which are no fantasy, but a very common tree in Persian gardens.
astonding - I found my way here threw the Britan Got Talent - Its amazing that this form of singing has been lost to generations - at 70 ish Im thankful I found it - Bravo
Absolutely correct. I also so Giulio Cesare at the Met. I spent the first 2 acts with my mouth wide open, being totally amazed at the counter tenors voices. By Act 3, I realized Daniels has amazing breath control, phrasing, acting, and an incredible voice. Bravo Daniels.
Ever since his first album came out many years ago, his has been my favorite voice. I'm not saying he has the all time greatest voice because not any one singer can claim that honor. For my personal taste, he is right up there with Janet Baker, Jessye Norman, Leontyne Price, Birgit Nielson and Emmy Ameling. He enabled a new generation of counter tenors to come to the fore and to get work. Bless you, David Daniels! And what a gorgeous vibrato!!
@fashionablesixties I just saw the production in a movie theater in Madrid and he was GREAT. His voice and tone were gorgeous. He made me cry when he's asking for forgiveness... Brilliant!
Stunningly beautiful and humble. I feel the same awe when listening to the amazing ANDREY NEMZER singing SAINT FRANCIS PRAYER. Such humility and inspiration!.
bass, baritone and tenor are three pitches of low to high male voices, with the vocal tone used being basically that of the speaking voice. in classical singing of these types you learn to extend the voice up somewhat without changing into a lighter sort of tone. In countertenor singing you use what is (a bit pejoratively) called the falsetto tone, but sung strongly and well-supported. This enables men to sing up to an octave higher, in what are more typically female ranges.
@quaerinven many years ago this piece was sometimes played on the organ in our church when the congregation left, after the Sunday service. I recall that women cried or had tears in their eyes when they heard this. It was very solemn and I associated the music with dramatic, sad events. Daniels fits right in this solemn atmosphere.
Love this countertenor. David Daniels is magnificent. His voice is the gold standard of other countertenors' which is ironic since he started his singing career as a tenor then switched to countertenor . His diction is also perfect. Can't wait to see him on the stage (again) of the Met in The Enchanted Island.
Troops FYI: the harpsichord part is a figured bass - meaning it's up to the performer to improvise whatever strikes his/her fancy. If the conductor didn't think this performance was over the top, well . . .
Stunningly beautiful and humble. I feel the same awe when listening to the amazing ANDREY NEMZER singing SAINT FRANCIS PRAYER. Such humility and inspiration!
BEST sung version of this piece... David Daniels... unparalleled

This IS to a tree, a plane tree to be specific. It's a fantasy.

una melodía que llega al corazón, y la voz simplemente sublime.

It is a love song, thoiughtfully to a tree, but really to his love, who is listening beyond the wall. No one will ever know. Wonderfully sung here.
