For those not in the know, this chip has 5bit (32 possible values) pitch resolution, and they are more-or-less atonal. In 1977 when designing the TIA in the 2600, video game music wasn't exactly high on Atari's list of priorities especially given that because of the Fairchild Channel F, they had to release the Atari 2600 on a faster timetable than planned. What's interesting about the TIA having 32 pitches and being out-of-tune is that a traditional steam calliope (steamship organ) has these same problems. Think of the Atari TIA as an electric calliope (the same way a clavinet is an electric clavichord) when doing music on it, and it may be useful. It helps that quite a few notable calliope tunes have lapsed into the public domain, in part due to how many years it's been since the wide usage of steamboats. Also, if you find any songs written FOR a calliope, I recommend trying to port them to the TIA.
the TIA, limited as it is, has a certain filthy sound to it that, frankly, only the Gameboy can really reproduce. or maybe it's just that i've never heard someone compose proper chipthrash on the Ricoh
