Cross wrote this song about Laura Coffin Carter, an 18-year-old student at Denison University in Granville, Ohio who was killed by a stray bullet on April 17, 1982. She was riding in a car with her parents and three friends when gunfire broke out a block away and the bullet hit her in the chest. These are the true facts behind this song-"General Hospital" just happened to use it later for their Luke and Laura sub-plot.
Christopher Cross was dating a young woman who happened to be Laura's friend. Laura's parents set up a scholarship fund in Laura's name following the tragedy.
I was a senior in high school when this beautiful young woman that was a junior. She always had just a wonderful smile on her face to everyone she saw every day. She was at a church gathering at a river beach having a great day she laid down on the sand and never woke up again. The saddest thing I have ever gone through. She was just a sweetheart. I was just a sports friend but I play this song every year. And ball my eyes out. Then I laugh at all the good times we shared. Traci was the best most kindest person I have ever known. I’m 60 years old and miss her every year. Thanks for sharing this song.
Yes this song definitely touches a tender spot in my heart. When I was 26 I lost a very special lady in my life, Donna, who committed suicide. Her mind had been badly affected by drugs, she was a hippie in the 60's and got caught up in the culture. She had convinced herself that God had told her to take her life. That was one of the toughest things I've ever gone through! To this day, almost 40 year later, I still miss her. May she rest in peace.
Thank you for a truly heart felt reaction to this beautiful tribute to Laura Carter, written and performed by the great Christopher Cross. I can’t help but think about my favorite singer songwriter Laura Nyro, when I hear this song, she passed away at the age of 49 from ovarian cancer in 1997.

She was a friend of a girl he was dating. Both girls were in college at that time in Ohio. She unfortunately was hit and killed by a stray bullet fired a block away by gang members having it out over something stupid I'm sure, while riding in a car with her parents. Laura Coffin Carter was her name. She must have been a really cool girl for him to come up with such a beautiful song about her. One of the most haunting I've ever heard. I'm sure you know the story by now. I see some of these comments are a year old, but I thought I'd say something anyway. This story and song touched me deeply as did your reaction to it! Well done!
Hiya my baby, nanna here. Just want to wish you a very happy Easter. You're looking soooo good & confident. Keep safe my angel. Lots of love & big hugs from us all over here in GB. You're such a sweet girl. xx
Denison freshman Laura Carter was riding with her parents and some college friends in Columbus, Ohio, 40 years ago this coming Sunday when a bullet from a gang war a block away struck her in the chest. Her father raced her to the nearest hospital, but she could not be saved. Laura was close friends with Paige, Cross's girlfriend at the time. Chris also knew Laura, and he wrote this song to comfort Paige and as a tribute to Laura. I can't hear this song to this day without getting teary-eyed.
My son went to Denison and actually played lacrosse like Laura did.. tears always for her and her family. Such a beautiful place and she had her whole life ahead of her.. taken away
Way back in the day on a soap opera called General Hospital, they had a hugely popular storyline about "bad boy" Luke and "innocent" Laura. I'm not sure if this song was written specifically for the show, but they used the hell out of it.
CC's girlfriend's Denison University roommate Laura was killed by a stray bullet while riding in the back seat of her parents' car after she played in a intercollegiate sport game in Columbus.
Oh my god! I remember this song! What a hidden treasure this is. The lyrics that stand out to me are "when you think of Laura, laugh don't cry. I know she'd want it that way". Thank you Lizzie for bringing this wonderful song back. I've always liked Christopher Cross, I just forgot why. The expression on your face is like that of a human sponge, soaking in every drop of this precious and tender song. I really appreciate your videos, they are always uplifting and gratifying to watch. A Sade song that reminds me this one is "Maureen". The music is smooth and I interpret the lyrics as her missing her best friend. I'm so happy you're back! I really like watching your facial expression when you tell us to press the notifications for future videos. Period!
Hi Lizzie, This is an absolute hidden gem, which I totally appreciate!!! I'm also grateful that you're doing well and you're giving us "Gangster Hippies" some nice reactions to look forward to!!!
I’ve just been discovering Christopher Cross this year. I’ve heard all these songs before, long ago and they got stuck in my head even though I didn’t know at the time. I love it, He’s amazing. Great reactions!
From Wikipedia Cross wrote the song to mourn the death of Denison University college student Laura Carter, who was killed in Columbus, Ohio, when she was struck by a stray bullet during gunfire in a gang war. Carter, a lacrosse player from Wayne, Pennsylvania, was sitting in the back seat of her father's car. Her family was visiting for homecoming, and had just watched Laura and her friends compete in a lacrosse match. Cross had met Carter through her college roommate Paige McNinch, whom Cross was dating at the time. McNinch was pictured on the inner sleeve of the Another Page album, sitting on a stool. Cross wrote the song as a way of offering comfort to McNinch, and honoring Carter's memory. Carter's shooter, Gordon Newlin, served time for the shooting. He was released on parole in 2012.
I live so close to Granville where Denison University is located. The tragedy occurred on a Saturday afternoon after a lacrosse game. Her family was taking her and some teammates out to dinner when gun fire took place a block away. The killer did not mean to kill her but things like this happen when people start shooting at each other. The bullet struck Laura and she died instantly. I'm not sure of the time frame but I'm thinking it was in the spring of 1982. As mentioned above, Laura was the roommate of Cross's girl friend at that time. If Laura were alive today she'd be closing in on 60 years of age.
I was one of the people who recommended this one. I hope it wasn't too downbeat for you and your viewers. I think it's absolutely beautiful while at the same time being terribly sad, especially considering the backstory. Your analysis was right on the money. Chris did a great job of evoking the heartache of the situation while still leavening it with love and hope.
Oh no I loved it and thank you for recommending it! Chris always knows just how to deliver for each track and I think that’s one of the amazing parts of his artistry from what I’ve heard thus far so thank you💗💗💗
Love your reactions my dear. Christopher Cross is just a master music maker. I'm so happy to see you back. I hope you know the joy that you bring some people being here❤️
Wonderful reaction to another beautiful Christopher Cross classic Lizzie. And your comments reflect the sincere message of the song. Laura reminds me of someone who was full of joy and celebrated life. And on that note, I'd like to suggest a song by Rare Earth called I Just Want to Celebrate. It was released in 71 and I believe you'll really enjoy it🎵🎶🎸 It's always so good to see you Lizzie😊
You look wonderful sister ❤...love your personality and reaction to this cut . I heard this in decades, I didn't know he sung this . This gives me memories sister...may peace be with you beloved ❤.

Hi Lizzie great reaction to Christopher Cross song. That song really touches my heart every time I listened to it !! There's 2 more song I like you to react to when you see fit from Christopher Cross. 1. I really don't know anymore, 2 The light is on. Yes, this was used in General Hospital. It's really written about Laura Coffin Carter, who was the roomate of Christopher Cross' girlfriend in an Ohio University I forget who was killed by a stray bullet in the back of her parents car on a visit. She was from the Main Line Western Philly suburbs. I drove past her cemetery every day on the way to work in Paoli, PA.
