🏔️ Join me as we journey down the mountain, showcasing the stark contrast between the higher altitudes and the snowless streets of our towns. Experience the unexpected beauty of late November in Montana, where parks are still bustling, and wildlife, like deer, roam freely without the hindrance of snow.
❄️ But it's not all scenic views and mild weather - we also discuss the practical aspects of living in a region where winter can be unpredictable. Learn why every Montanan keeps two sets of tires and the annual rush to tire stores when the first snowstorm is forecasted.
📅 As we approach December, we prepare for what the weather might bring, despite predictions of an El Niño year impacting our usual snowfall patterns. Will we see a traditional Montana winter, or has 2023 brought a dramatic shift in our seasonal expectations?
👉 Stay tuned to find out more about winter tire preparations, local reactions to the weather forecasts, and a detailed look at what the Weather Channel app predicts for the coming weeks. Whether you're a local resident, planning to visit, or simply intrigued by the changing climate, this video offers a unique perspective on winter in Montana for 2023.

Why don't people just buy a 2nd cheap set of steel wheel rims and just swap them over at home? If you have to store the tires anyway, having wheels in them won't make it any harder.

Modern cars just sync the TPMS automagically! I bought an impact driver and a torque wrench and do it myself! Can be nimble with timing and also not have to gamble on those lines and dates… just switched them this weekend with the snow!

Super warm in Alberta, too. It's weird seeing no snow and soft green grass, mixed in with Christmas lights. That pretty much never happens.

Two years ago the southern central part of Montana has 200% snowpack and epic flooding. The Yellowstone, Stillwater had terrible floods, Rock Creek roared thru Red Lodge. Winter a thing of the past?

I have to say I have been really enjoying the late advent of winter this year, and would be alright if it stayed like this the whole time in the low lands. I'm okay if the mountains get it for the winter sports fans, but it sure has been nice being able to get around without having to worry about icy roads.

It was 37 below in Eureka last December. Snow was a couple feet. Don't know if that was normal. In Iowa a normal winter was a couple feet but last year about 7 inches. Something is up. We spent the winter in Eureka with all season tires and front wheel drive and got around fine. When its icy I slow down. 😊

We have had record long growing seasons here in Northwest Montana in recent years. Even the last three years being La Nina events were very warm. Now we may be entering a super El Nino and this historically has led to drier and much warmer winters. Hopefully there will be enough variability leading to some decent snow events as our area is stil bordering on moderate to severe drought. Only 15.50 inches of precipitation at my place since January 1st 2023.

Also those skiing days is almost forever gone because I my medical problems and limited amount of money. I always I could filled a bucket list of mine in skiing Big Sky, Bridger Bowl, Showdown and Whitefish Mountain among others. I skied Utah, Jackson Hole, Colorado years ago.

Greatings from Innsbruck and a Tyrolean, who doesnt understand, why people, living in snowy areas dont have a second set of tires WITH Rims and just change their wheels by their own. But hey here in Austria more and more people are storing their winter tyres (with rims) at repair shops and let them do the work. And they have the same problem as you guys in montana when the first snow is forcasted, just with rims ;-). Dont know what all my Austrian fellows do, when they have to change tyre due to damage and no one is around. Greatings from a snowy Innsbruck, at least up here at "Hungerburg" where I live (900m / 3000ft above sea level)

It's supposed to be a strong El Nino this year. However, it's supposed to peak this month, start to weaken, and become more centrally based (called a Modoki El Nino), which has a different influence on the weather. Other weather teleconnections that influence the weather can override the El Nino/ La Nina. I've listed them below:
PDO: Pacific Decadal Oscillation (+ or - phases)
QBO: Quasi-Biennial Oscillation - upper level winds over the equator (east or west direction)
AO: Arctic Oscillation (+ or - phases)
NAO: North Atlantic Oscillation (+ or - phases)
EPO: Eastern Pacific Oscillation (+ or - phases)
WPO The Western Pacific Oscillation (+ or - phases)
PNA: Pacific North Oscillation (+ or - phases)
MEI MEI: Multivariate ENSO index. A method used to gauge the intensity of the El Niño
SOI The Southern Oscillation Index: measure of the atmospheric pressure difference between sea level pressures at Darwin, Australia
Madden Julian Oscillation Phases 1 through 8 (phase results differ by month).

Hi Will, I've studied weather and climate for over 35 years. Beginners can start with a cloud, and wind scale charts and a barometer. Really great beginner tools.

You know what Will. I can't tell if the snow was deeper back in the day or the stories about those big snows are getting deeper as time goes on? Newbie and all this is our 3rd winter, with a small tractor with chains on and PTO snow blower, and an ATV with a plow on, a walk behind snow blower for the detail finish work, a snow rake for the roof and it's valleys, I have a much winter as I need so far. Knees can't ski anymore but we Xcountry. Trout Creek area
