  • This is a test of the 175 gr Nomad 3 Blade.
    Here is summary of my 2025 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 14 pts)
    I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a score of 22. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 14.82 pts)
    The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
    The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.95" = 5.46 pts)
    The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.95”=5.46 pts)
    The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.3" = 3.9 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 18.41 pts)
    Initial sharpness 9%, 216 grams = 9.84/10 = 8.86 pts & Edge Retention (9%, +47 grams = 9.06/10 = 8.15 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
    Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
    What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
    A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10= 1.4 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 16.75 pts)
    There are 2 penetration tests:
    Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (7.75" = 8.61 pts)
    Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score. (57 layers= 8.14 pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 18.2 pts)
    Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 =12 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (7/10= 3.5 pts)
    It is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (9/10 = 2.7 pts).
    Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    Bonus:
    +1.75 Extra thick blades (.11")
    +1 wide, triangular holes
    .05 pts Rotation of 5 degrees at 10.5"
    TOTAL SCORE: 84.98 pts = 9 Golden Arrows
    Price: $31.60/head

    One thing I would love to see in your reviews is a 3 shot group. (I know you use to shoot groups and that was GREAT) I think its good to see how the broadhead compares to a field point and a single shot is nice; but it would be infinitely better to know the group size for consistency. For example if the first shot hits an inch away from the point of aim and the next one hits 5 inches below and the 3rd hits 3 inches up and to the right with a total spread of 8 inches might be a pass for that particular arrow head versus a 3 shot group with a total spread of 2.5 inches. Personally I have an air-bow (high powered airgun that shoots arrows) I also know guys watching have crossbows both which you can sight in to your point of impact with a scope so group size is more important that impact in relation to a field point. I am no expert in the pin sights on a compound bow but Id imagine you can adjust them for this as well. I know shooting a group is a big ask but it is the one element I wish i could see that would push me to try some of the amazing broadheads because I would know i can be accurate with them.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  5 дней назад +3

      Yeah, I know that would be better. I just don’t have enough broad heads to do that. And I also run the risk of damaging a lot of arrows in the process.

    • @lacky903
      @lacky903 5 дней назад +2

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures you don't actually shoot groups, as said that would destroy lots of arrows. You just shoot 3 times (can even be with the same arrow/head each time) then measure what the group would have been. If all three hit 4 inches high but with a 1 inch group that's still great flight. If they are all over, 8 inch group, that's crappy flight even if one of them hits the bullseye. Anyway just a suggestion. It would be a good addition to the protocol and not add much time.

    Rarely get three blade heads to fly well with similar impact as a field point. Two blade heads usually impact much closer to field point impact. If you go to a three shot group with broadheads, it is best to clock them all with the same orientation. Fixed blade heads tend to group wider even with orientation being the same. I shoot three arrows with broadheads and pick the two that impact the closest to each other. I then sight in for one of those two arrows and make that my first arrow in my quiver to be shot at game.

      i asked him the same question on his last test, he said he does use the same weight field points as the broadhead he is testing. i see quite a bit of difference in a 100gr field point vs a 125gr field point at 30 yards.

      there is no regaining that edge. way too much of the blade was damaged. to get that sharp again, down past all those chinks, a whole lot of blade will be removed. and it would no longer be 175 grains either.

    Based on previous testing, this broadhead failed. They would be better off if staying with the same metal and hardness and doing away with the single bevel and going double. This would give a much stronger edge and cut down or even eliminate the edge chatter.

    I wish there had been more rotation. To date I haven’t seen anything beat my Trifecta in that category. However, I would NOT hesitate to use these on Whitetail. I think they’ll leave a massive drain hole. I’d love to see if you can tune enough to get necessary accuracy out of your X one.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  6 дней назад +2

      More and more single bevel broadheads are being designed that have minimal rotation- with the goal of having just enough to pry bone apart a bit, and still maximize penetration.

    • @GregK-pv5xe
      @GregK-pv5xe 6 дней назад

      @ I know that somebody’s always looking at different and better ways to accomplish the same goal. Some of that is marketing and some will be functional.
      The rotation and the moon channel from the trifecta is just simply amazing. The only problem I had was that with a crossbow one broadhead was a flyer. I tried tuning it. I tried it on multiple bolts and just could not get it to fly the same as the rest . The rest of them flew perfectly. Switching to my PSE compound bow. It was a totally different story, but so much easier to tune.
      I haven’t had a chance to go to the website to look at these nomad heads, but I wanna see what they offer in their tube blade option as well but I do love this 175 grain weight. I hear a lot about not needing that heavy head, but if guys would try these things, they just be amazed what they will do and they would never look back. Thanks for sharing another broadhead. I had not heard of and costing me more money lol
