There is an interview with Jimmy about this event, and the whole band agreed to do this. Cheeky buggers then did a quick run from the gig. The crowd loved it, and it was a typical thing about this band. Aussies loved them. They had devoted fans, a lot of whom would not know how tough it was for them to survive.
This is not their only song about the media. They do another one called Ita about Ita Buttrose. She was a TV and radio personality, a co founding editor of Chloe magazine, and a businesswoman. She is currently 82 years of age and has an OBE and OA (awards by England).

Countdown, and Molly Meldrum, the bloke at the end had a ridiculous amount of power to make or break an artist. The line 'I never saw you at the Astra hotel' was a real dig at all that jumped on the bandwagon once they began to get popular. It was a wild night!
I have always believed that Don Walker's incredible talent gets overlooked because Jimmy and Ian are... Jimmy and Ian. I used to position myself right in front of Don because I had never been anyone play with the passion and fervour he did. Glad you got to see a historic moment in Oz pop culture. And of course, thanks Dr Kap for all your efforts to keep our history alive. You are much appreciated.

I love that you are researching the band on your own because Chisel were no nonsense and refused to bow to those that tried to tell them how they should be. This is just another example of Chisel giving the finger to the powerbrokers who control music. It is impossible to not love this band!!! Oh and what about Don on those keys?

The band at the time had their hands tied. If they played along they'd be labelled "sell outs", if they boycotted they'd be considered "elitists" in contrast to their working class status. This was the perfect response!

People can criticice Molly Meldrum and Countdown but it was non-commercial, hugely popular for many years, and did a massive amount to promote local bands in Australia.

I was at this Countdown Awards night and saw it happen. We were all laughing at Cold Chisel because it looked ridiculous. There were fabricated letters of complaint that Molly read out on the show the following week - all bullshit. Countdown continued to champion them years after this event.

Phil Small, bass player wearing a Nazi military uniform says it all about their attitude, intent and distaste concerning commercial interests and constraints. Rock n roll dilettantes and mavericks. Hot Chisel. 🔥

I was not old enough in early 1980's to have seen this or know what was going on but fun stuff to see in hindsight. They had the right attitude towards what those wanker media tv awards were about. Such superficial bullshit so up yours performance to it all I love to see historically. TV shows have only got worse as decades go on. All those wanky types shows like Such and Such Has Talent or X Factor or whatever I just see the adds for and would chew my own arm off rather than sit through and watch. The adds are bad enough but obviously a lot of people watch them as tv networks keep making such bullshit.
