  • This is a video that I have made when I moved in to Broad Lane Court for my year abroad experience at The University of Sheffield. It was something that I have made to show to my family and friends at that time but I ended up leaving it available on youtube because before moving in to Broad Lane Court I could not find any thing similar to give me a glimpse of what was expecting me. It was everything recorded in a single try and i did no edition at all but I hope you find it helpful if you are moving in to Broad Lane Court. I will work on adding some english subtitles soon.
    Cheers!

    Original video description in portuguese:
Vídeo que eu fiz para mostrar pra vocês um pouquinho da Broad Lane Court. Moradia da universidade onde eu estou morando aqui em Sheffield. Foi minha primeira e única tentativa e não fiz nenhuma edição nele porque não tenho um editor de vídeo e estou com preguiça de baixar. Vai dar pra vocês ficarem conhecendo um pouquinho da minha vida aqui. :D

First of all, thank you for your video! It was so helpful being able to visualize the accommodation with a walk through!
I just got offered Broad Lane Court for my accommodation and I was wondering if there was a laundry facility within the accommodation or block itself? If not then where did you do your laundry whilst staying there?
Also I saw some reviews online saying that Broad Lane Court didn't have communal spaces and hence it lacked a sense of community. Can I ask what was your experience staying there regarding this aspect?
Hope you can help with my questions, I would really appreciate your answers. :)

Hi Nicole, I am glad the video was helpful. I lived at Broadlane Court in 2013/2014 so my answers may not be very accurate.
There was a shared sefl-service laundry at the block and you received a laundry card when you arrived. You could top-up this card to use it at the landry.
And yes, there is no communal spaces at broad lane, but we were allowed to use the communal spaces from the other university accomodations and the university used to organize some events for the accomodation residences to help us integrate. For me, I ended up bonding mostly with my flatmates and friends that I have made on the university societies and sports clubs.
Hope you enjoy your time at Sheffield as I did!
      Best Regards

Hi, can I ask a question plz? I'd like to know... whether single-gender flats would be better or not! It would be so nice of you if you answer me:) I'm wondering if there was anything uncomfortable by reverse genders, or had you heard any problems among single-gender flats, vice versa. Your video was sooo helpful, thx hundred times!!!

Hi Ha Youji! I am glad that my video was helpful! Unfortunately I was talking in portuguese the whole time but I am thinking about adding some english subtitles to it.
In regards to your question, I lived in a mixed genders flat and we had no problems at all. However, we were all from the same country (Brazil) and I believe this was very helpful in general. It would have been a wonderful experience to have flatmates from all over the world but having flatmates with the same culture and habits definitely makes thinks easier.
I have never heard any complaints specifically related to mixed or single gender flats, when my friends had trouble with flatmates it was generally related to incompatibility in habits and behavior, regardless of the gender.
I wish you good luck and I am sure that you will have a wonderful experience at Sheffield Uni!

    Hi there!
I'm between Allen Court and Broad Lane Court. Which one would you recommend? Taking into account that the first is £50 more per week.
I have seen in the Google Maps reviews that there have been robberies in Broad Lane Court, I wanted to know if inside each flat each room can be locked.
    Thank you very much!

Hello Sara, I lived there a while ago... 2013/2014, but each room had its own lock.

Hey, this is kind of a weird question, but I need your help.
I'm living in Broad Lane Court this year, I'm Flat 12 and i can pick the Room number.I've seen a few pictures of the place and I was wondering where my room will be located in the flat.
Like, say I pick Room 1, will the window in my room be looking out onto the entrance area (like the courtyard type place?) or looking out onto Sheffield itself (and like the main road and stuff around Broad Lane Court).
You can't imagine how grateful I'd be for your answer. - Zefy

Absolutely Zefy , hello! I am sorry but I lived in flat 22, I believe 12 will be different. In my building we had flats 17-22. Nonetheless, in our flat rooms 1, 2 and 3 were facing the center of the accomodation building and flats 4, 5, 6 and 7 were facing the street. If they all follow the same pattern, I think rooms 1, 2 and 3 should face the center.

Olivia Alves oh wow thank you so much for taking the time! I think I'm picking number 4,5 or 6 just to be sure. Thanks again! xx

hi! how did you recieve mail while you lived at broad lane court? i’m not sure what i should do to make sure i get my own mail and it’s not stolen ! thank you :)

Hi! For simple mail such as letters we had a mailbox in our flat door and the mailman could access the buildings and he would leave all the mail address to that flat in this mailbox. For packages he would ring the bell asking someone to go get it and sign the receipt. Overall, just make sure to include your flat number on the address, this way only your flatmates will have access to it through the mailbox and I am sure they will not try to get your mail, I never heard this type of complaint while I was at Sheffield, everybody was really friendly. :)
