- Since Vice President Kamala Harris announced she will be seeking the Democratic presidential nomination after President Biden dropped out of the 2024 race, memes of her asking, “You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?” have circulated the internet. Harris said it in May 2023 during a White House event for an initiative focused on expanding educational opportunities for Hispanic and Latino Americans. Here's a portion of her speech where that now-viral "coconut tree" moment came from.

What I took away from it is that people are all complex networks of the self and the things around them. There are so many connections to account for in people's lives, we can't just pretend that this person spawned out of the ether or fell out of a coconut tree. There are families and communities that also need to be accounted for when moving forward with making the world a better place.
The message is that she doesn't want to fix the surface problems, she wants to improve things on a broader scale and listen to the needs of the people who really understand the complex situations. Politicians don't know what it's like to be in the thick of it, so they need to listen to the people who do.

Funny enough, the coconut tree story makes sense on its own. But in the framework of this entire speech it's incoherent gobbledygook.
How does the coconut story make sense? Like, what do you think the kids would do or say that would elicit that rebuke from mom?
Seemed clear to me.
I mean, "falling out of a coconut tree" is getting at the idea that things don't just appear out of nowhere. I suppose it's a play on "things don't just fall into your lap."
Things are the way they are (in a legal sense) because preceding events and a person's immediate social environment allowed for it to happen. That's "the context" she is referring to in this metaphor. She is saying there's a causal link between a child's prosperity and their upbringing, a notion to which her mother expresses exasperation over with her kids when they were likely not taking things seriously, as kids tend not to do.
Teachers, parents etc are important guiding factors for someone to be set up to excel in this modern world, but kids don't necessarily appreciate that until much later.
Perhaps it's a bit too metaphorical for it's own good, but the intentions are understandable and it does humanise her a bit. It's silly, it's memorable but it's not incoherent nonsense in the context of what she was talking about before. At least, that's my interpretation.
@@MikeM-uy6qp What’s she’s saying (attempting to say) is that we, as a people, are a collection of the experiences, opinions and relationships we have with the people around us.

We have a saying like that in India about falling from trees (often coconut trees) to describe people who forget contexts of situations. Maybe Kamala's Indian parent has said it thinking of that.

>> But it's also about what is the culture of the environment. How are we approaching this issue in a way that we also understand -- we cannot support and help our young people if we also? Don't also look at the context in which those young people? Live and are being raised which means necessarily because our our edict and our mission is not to come out and say, "Well, we could do this better?"
>> Part of the extension of the work you will do is -- yes -- focused on our young leaders and our young people. But understanding we also then... have to be clear about the needs of their parents! And their grandparents. And their teachers, and their communities!
>> Cause none of us just live in a silo. Everything is in context. My mother used to -- she would give us a hard time sometimes and she would say to us, "I don't know what's wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree? You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you."
>> So all of this is part of the work of this group of extraordinary leaders who will help inform and advise how we think about our work, and like the secretary said, "Give us feedback, give us counsel, give us direction." And how we best achieve our mission doing it in a way that we fully understand the challenges and the opportunities.
