Thank you for this video! My grandmother passed over three years ago and her grave site still has not grown grass! After watching I will be able to beautify the area around her headstone! Very simple and to the point, thank you again!
In the same situation with my husband's headstone...I've gone to the cemetery and found that the cemetery groundskeepers just throw grass seed on the DRY HARD ground--as though that would do something!!
My husband had been trying to grow grass in one spot of our front yard. After following these steps he finally did it! I started seeing grass after just one week, I couldn't believe it. Thanks so much! I'm passing your channel to all my friends and neighbors, lol :P
I tried a version of this. I had to cover a huge bald spot after the removal of a tree stump. I live in Georgia that has red clay. I forgot to rake first but I spread the grass seed. Then I did a layer of the Milorganite and topped that with a layer of peat. I didn't use the Patch Master. I watered the grass with a hose for about 15 minutes morning and at sundown every day and after about 7 days, it started to sprout. Now it's been 14 days and I have pretty, bright green grass. I'm going to keep watering daily until the end of October. I'm so happy because I've tried growing grass in the past with no success.
Hey Al! Larry in Chicago again. Last year I had shoulder and bicep surgery so I was out of the lawn care game. I had a service come and I have to say, it never has looked worse! So anyway, I am back to my old self and catching up on your videos and this was a huge help! Thanks! I went out and visited Home Depot this morning and got all of the stuff that you used for this lawn and I replicated it. There was a section of my yard that had grub damage last year (imagine that, and i paid them for grub treatment and still got them.) so I cleaned it all out and did what you did here. I had a really thin lawn in the front yard as well, (that used to be the best looking part of my lawn till last year) and I did the seed, peat moss, and patch master. I did do the milorganite a couple weeks ago on my entire lawn so I didn't do it again. I bought some starter fertilizer. I wanted to ask you before I went and put that down. Do you think I could still go ahead with the starter fertilizer?
lfh1973 Hey Larry - glad to hear from you and glad you are back to normal! 2 things here:1) no starter fert. We don't want to much in there. Save that for Fall. 2) make sure that Patchmaster is super thin and not clumpy. It can choke out the seed. If you think it's too thick, run a rake through it. Let me know how things turn out!
+The Lawn Care Nut what serious thoughts do you have about birds? I'm always fighting with keeping them off my seeded lawn. I watched your church lawn project and saw you also throwing out some seed after plug aerating. But I feel like the birds will just scoop up everything I throw out
Stephen J. Lonison You can hide the seed from birds by covering the seeded area with straw. A bale of straw covers about 1000 sq ft. Ideally the straw should be distributed on the seeded area where you can see half straw half soil. Straw also helps with acting as a barrier from large water droplets that could potentially disrupt the seeds spot in the soil. Also helps with erosion control and it keeps the soil damp and warm.
I remember a grass seed that was inbeded like in cotton candy fibers. Haven't seen it anymore. That seed was amazing. Purchased at Walmart years ago. I remember spreading it and feeling the urge to put it in my mouth.
Perfect! I applied it the same way as you did with the peat moss, I sort of rubbed it through my hands and made a powder out of it. It's nice and thin. I watered it down twice today to keep it moist and I'll do that everyday. Super pumped to see it come back in nice and green. Hopefully by summertime I'll be looking at a nice lush green lawn. I don't think it was too far gone that I can't bring it back really nicely. Now a Three Floyds! ;)
We planted new grass seed last august..used worm castings dirt..beautiful lawn everwhere...It's April here in wisconsin and it's coming up very patchy..Is it because it isn't warm enough yet? Our old parts of the lawn are green and beautiful
Grass not growing well in area of my husband's headstone. I've gone to the cemetery and found that the cemetery groundskeepers just throw grass seed on the DRY HARD ground--as though that would do something! (It's been 2&1/2 years so definitely long enough for ground to recover from the burial.)
Hi Allyn I love your videos and they helped me so much! Regarding new grass seeding video here, you recommended 45-60 min of watering every day? That comes to 1/2 inch of watering every day which seems like an enormous amount of water. Are you really recommending almost 4 inches a week of water here? Many thanks...Mitch
I used the same exact seed and it's only day 4 and I already see germination in some spots, I water 2 times a day unless it rains. Can't wait to see what it looks like 30 days out.
So I should be doing massive amounts of work but I can't stop thinking about my lawn and how semi-crappy it looks which is why i'm watching your awesome, informative, easy to follow video instead. I have a question that i'm hoping you can answer.... As I'm approaching June, I managed to kill some weed areas on my lawn. I got two more patches that i need to treat/kill. My question is, should i even bother killing them, now that we are in the month of June? Would it even be possible to grow grass on the spots I treated with the temps on the rise? I live in CT so temps are preparing to get warmer. Should I just wait until September when temps get cooler? My wife may divorce me (jokingly of course...i think) if I complain or stare at my lawn anymore. Just wondering if i should hold off and deal with the little green i have even if that means keeping the weeds there for their green color and working on it once temps drop.
Allan- I have some leftover seed and Scott's 'Lawn Food' leftover from the last 1-2 years. Since it is that old, should I toss it or use it up this year on my lawn? Thank You for your time!
Paul Connolly the seed for sure you should throw down. And really, since there is no proper way to dispose of your old fert, you should spread that too - just spread it thin. Won't hurt anything.
Hey LNC love your videos and I had a question. I followed the instructions in this video on a small piece of yard around my flag pole and so far I'm getting really good results however I did seed two weeks ago Sunday Oct , 15. it's coming in good its about two inches tall do you think it will continue to grow enough to make it through winter? I live in northeast Tennessee and I planted a turf type tall fescue blend and I'm hoping it will last through winter. Also I have about 3 acres to mow so its not easily watered and i want to get the rest of my lawn looking much better. It's not all weeds but there are a lot of them especially wide bladed grasses. I plan on starting to rehab in early spring but don't have an irrigation system just a impact sprinkler. if i put down scotts water smart seed would the spring rains be enough to get it to germinate? i know this is long but i would really appreciate your opinion, thanks.
buying a house that has no grass in the back yard, this video has me relieved and I can't wait. only thing is do you recommend tilling the soil at all or just make sure there's no high spots? thank you, subscribed and excited for my future lawn.
I've had very inconsistent results with the Scott's EZ-Seed products. It reminds me of their combined Weed and Feed products. Helpful to a fault. I've had much better results with the cheaper "no frills" grass seed.
I have the same issue they dug up a pipe however prior to that was just weeds. Can i kill off the weeds and use a tiller to mix the soil with top soil to start off the seed.
Do you have a video about filling in shallow spots in the lawn? Should I just add soil to grade and seed on top then peat moss per the video or should I gradually fill in with top soil and the grass will grow through it?
I have a big one to do in barrington il in two weeks. I will post up video. Good to see someone in youtube same state I am up north by gurnee Good job man. I will see after video when you post it.
The Lawn Care Nut I am doing my best first year servicing that area. I was nervous when I had that call and told me they where in barrington but I managed to close the deal. I will post when I am done
My "lawn" is patchy as the lawn in the video but it also contains a lot of weeds, do I need to do anything about the weeds before I cover with soil and seed?
I read that more grass seed is not necessarily better since they compete with each other for water and nutrients. Also why not use a spreader for your grass seed?
randy richardson not typically. Most lawns in the Chicago area are all the same - clay. And clay rarely has pH issues in this area so there is no need to soil test.
Thanks! VERY helpful. I am near Joliet and am going to follow steps exactly for a large bare shady patch in my backyard that Creeping Charlie took over.
What is better, using peat moss or compost? I have a very weedy patchy lawn. I put down some milorganite to add some nutrients since it's mid summer, but come fall I want to aerate, over seed, and amend some soil with either peat moss or compost. It's a large 10,000 Sq ft lawn. What would u recommend?
I have some issues up here in the northeast. I need to seed about 2,000 square ft. The forsythia are blooming and the Dandelions are pushing up in the lawn. The temps are hovering around freezing for the next 10 days and we are expecting accumulation of snow. What should I do?
This is my go to video for when I start my lawn out front. Moved into my house by the way... front lawn is nothing but crab grass and weeds. Funny story... previous owner used to turn the house into a Haunted House attraction around Halloween every year... so naturally... the lawn doesn't exist lol.
Alan- I forgot to ask: is this the actual 'recipe of products' you'd use regardless of the size of the area you are trying to re-seed? I have a few areas of varying dimensions around my front and back yard I'd like to re-seed and wanted to check. Not sure how critical the Milorganite is as I have a couple areas of about 25-30 square feet to work on. Thanks Alan!!!
Paul Connolly great question! Milorganite is not necessary. Also, in smaller areas with no slope, you can skip the Scott's Patchmaster and use only Peat Moss as your covering. The keys to success mostly reside with the watering.
The Lawn Care Nut Home Depot had all the ingredients except Peat Moss, although I have a little left over in the garage I can use up. I'm considering doing everything on my own next season and ditching the Tru Green services as they are expensive. I wish you were in Boston Alan- I'd hire you in a heartbeat!
the PatchMaster will work great too, just do not get it too thick!! It can end up choking the seed. And I love Boston - I have clients there. Just too cold for me :)
The Lawn Care Nut Do you take on lawn care clients remotely? That's pretty cool. Can you send me an email (paulconnolly123@gmail.com) and we can connect?
LCN ... followed process, got grass. Thank you. I have ants marching in, should I kill them now with something like Sevin ... or wait until grass is more established (I'm about 3 days after germination of KBG, primarily).
LCN - followed this exactly and it worked perfect on 2/3 of the lawn. The other 1/3 I've now realized doesn't get as much sun exposure and the grass is growing in a bit more spotty. Anything I can do to take adantage of the last few weeks of suitable growing weather in New England to help that other 1/3? Great vids as always!
Hi, I'm trying to access your Bootcamp link. However, I'm getting a 'Your connection is not private' message. Please resolve so that I can access it. Thank you for great videos!
I've been following all your steps and my once dirt lawn is coming along beautifully. I've got 2 trouble spots from water runoff where the yard slopes. ? should the peat moss and scotts patch work? Also I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma and it gets HOT! Should I wait for cooler temps in the low 80s before I try this? Thanks in advance and thanks for your vids. Great info, and fun to watch. Keep em coming
I would assume you are seeding in Bermuda in which case I'd wait a couple more weeks then go for it. and yep, the scott's patchmaster will suck that seed right to the dirt keeping it in place.
Though I realize this is probably 100 videos ago for you, I'd love to get an update. Wondering if it required a second seeding. Staying tuned to the progress of your St Aug plugs and Frankenlawn
Lastly can I add additional seed ( from another bag) to the scots coir as I was thinking the same as you, that the seed was on the minimum side. If so shall I put down the seed under the coir as it will have the soil contact given by the Scots coir. I suppose this will be better then putting it on top. Having said that it will look no different to the seeds in the Scots coir mix as that seems to rest on the top as well. If the peat is to cover the seed so it has a bit of soil on-top of it, I get that.... And also the peat will have good nutrients of soil so it will be ideal to cover the seed. But I don't get why the coir is guaranteed to grow every where and it worked for me. If the peat is to maximise the seed growth so that contact is maximum and birds don't eat and seed are buried ever so slightly then I get it.., please explain in detail where you can. Thanks
And you don't want water a new lawn trying to grow with 15 minutes at a time saturating the lawn. Do not water your new lawn for an hour. Sunshine is also essential. Hence scoring the yard to allow rain and sunlight to penetrate the ground.
Edmond Lee not much you can do - just keep watering - once it germinates they will stop. they won't be able to eat enough to make too much of a problem. (usually)
Hello, it's almost 3 weeks since I have seeded my new lawn now i start to see a lot of young broad leaf grass coming out. I am guessing it's crabgrass. Is there anything I can do to get rid of them?
I'm finding that the Spring showers just aren't there, and I find myself watering three times a day just to keep it damp. The winds are drying out the soil, I can't wait the seed to germinate.
Hi I was wondering about something. My dad found this grass seed turf type tall fescue made by Titon rx it has rhizomes in it. What is it and what does it look like. It says it regrows and you don't have to over seed every year. Is it a good grass to use in your yard.
Thank you! Also, if my grass looks dead in certain areas, is it better to dig it up and seed per this video, or just start the fall recovery program? Or both?
Be careful with the Patch-master, once its wet, it turns into a mat and nothing grows. Peat Moss and Compost are great for helping establish the seed bed.
Why no starter fertilizer? Is it because the seed had it mixed in? Would you use a starter fertilizer with plain seed? How about "water smart" seed? Thanks for the great videos.
LCN- New subber. I have a similar project to the one you did here. I live outside of Naperville in a town called Lisle, IL. My question we have about 2,000 square feet to grow in a bare place...where do we buy these different steps in bulk? Also, we have a good include slope , should we sod the area or do you feel the grass with the patch will suffice? Any insight would be greatly appreciated
Thank you for this video! My grandmother passed over three years ago and her grave site still has not grown grass! After watching I will be able to beautify the area around her headstone! Very simple and to the point, thank you again!

New home owner here and I'm ready to make my yard beautiful and I absolutely love your videos, very helpful. Thank you for helping ❤️
Sherlie al. How’s your lawn going now?
Started this process last Sunday and this week my seed is sprouting! Thanks Lawn Care Nut.

Very informative for the beginners. THANKS!
I found it. Awesome video as it shows how patient you need to be while watering and waiting. Thanks for your tips and videos, I have learned a lot.
Nice job. Please, can you provide the link for part 2?

is it me or did he go through the steps twice?
Grass seed isn't exactly cheap, it costs over $40 for a 10 pound bag in Canada. Grass seed is still cheaper than sod, but it isn't dirt cheap.
$25 for 10 lbs bag of bermuda
@@cynicaltexan9639 where did you buy? I purchase from HanCook, but it seems doesn't work for me
@@truongle2381 Tractor supply
so just make a $40 bag of dirt and it will be dirt cheap!
I agree with you. It’s not that cheap.
Looks like you inspired the people across the street too!
Great Video. Thanks
Do you have any videos on caring for the lawn about a month after the newly fully seeded lawn?
Really enjoy your videos
Do you have a video about filling in shallow spots in the lawn? Should I just add soil to grade and seed on top then peat moss per the video or should I gradually fill in with top soil and the grass will grow through it?
My favorite video.
How many inches of loose topsoil should you use for new seed
great vid! from the LCP (psycho), he shoudl do more tutorial DIY projects like this...i can use is help...ribeys on me pal!

Heat - temp over 45

Water -
*Grass seed
*Milorganite
*Peat Moss
*PatchMaster (Scotts)

Yes, I was very surprised that he was totally wrong about that.
throw it down hope for the best.
It was a small lawn.
Do you have any sort of guideline as to how much area one cube of peat moss will cover?
Should we add RGS and Air 8 to the soil
Allyn - any recommended grass type for Illinois backyard in full direct sun?
Great video Alan!
Vicente Salinas thank you!
Patchmaster > straw for a larger lawn? What are your thoughts on topdressing, say with an organic mulch? Can I spread that with a broadcast spreader?
Allyn- Do you do any soil testing before you start straightening out a lawn? If so, where and how do you do it? Can you do a video on it?
Thanks
randy richardson not typically. Most lawns in the Chicago area are all the same - clay. And clay rarely has pH issues in this area so there is no need to soil test.

I would assume you are seeding in Bermuda in which case I'd wait a couple more weeks then go for it. and yep, the scott's patchmaster will suck that seed right to the dirt keeping it in place.
+The Lawn Care Nut thank you
Tim Ivers I have a huge hill and followed Al's advice in this video to a "T" and was amazed on how the patch master worked to prevent the erosion.
Michelle Trant it's worked perfectly on my yard. So glad I found this video.
Great Video. Thank you
What do you do about birds and such going after your seed?
Richard Gilmore hit em
Richard Gilmore threaten lawsuit

Plastic bags and cds tied to the tops of sticks
Though I realize this is probably 100 videos ago for you, I'd love to get an update. Wondering if it required a second seeding. Staying tuned to the progress of your St Aug plugs and Frankenlawn
update is up
Can you show updates every two weeks. For a detail viewing. Or at least every month without fail. Never to miss a month. Thanks
Do areas like yours ever use sod? Cause I did sod (mid-iron) but is it a good idea to used seed is the case were I started with sod?
do i have to pull out all weeds before doing this
Lastly can I add additional seed ( from another bag) to the scots coir as I was thinking the same as you, that the seed was on the minimum side.
Thanks
Why cover the entire lawn in Patchmaster? I understand the edges near the driveway etc.
Maybe he works for a patchmaster company. Haha
It's like over seeding with protection
What is a good grass seed to buy?
So what do you think the cost is per Sq.ft not counting labour... material onlY v.s. sod?
If you use step 1 for seeding you can prevent weeds from sprouting with it.
I wanted to see the end results? I didn't see part 2.
What does it look like now?
And you don't want water a new lawn trying to grow with 15 minutes at a time saturating the lawn. Do not water your new lawn for an hour. Sunshine is also essential. Hence scoring the yard to allow rain and sunlight to penetrate the ground.
Allyn, got another question. We've got birds eating our grass seeds, what's the best way to protect seeds from birds?
Edmond Lee not much you can do - just keep watering - once it germinates they will stop. they won't be able to eat enough to make too much of a problem. (usually)
The Lawn Care Nut Would you recommend covering it with peat most or compost or top soil?
Edmond Lee yes that is one of the steps in this video - cover with peat moss and/or scott's patchmaster
The Lawn Care Nut Allyn, what about compost or top soil? I'm trying to understand why you prefer peat moss over compost or top soil.
Hello, it's almost 3 weeks since I have seeded my new lawn now i start to see a lot of young broad leaf grass coming out. I am guessing it's crabgrass. Is there anything I can do to get rid of them?
Great video al, looking forward to the end results
Jake The Lawn Kid thanks dude!
Can I use compost for topdressing the grass seed instead of peat moss?
oh and great video
I'm finding that the Spring showers just aren't there, and I find myself watering three times a day just to keep it damp. The winds are drying out the soil, I can't wait the seed to germinate.
So where is the result videos for this... pls reply this with a link ... thanks
Hi I was wondering about something. My dad found this grass seed turf type tall fescue made by Titon rx it has rhizomes in it. What is it and what does it look like. It says it regrows and you don't have to over seed every year. Is it a good grass to use in your yard.
Can you share products used please?
After throwing her down how long should i wait to put on a starter fert?
Thank you!
Also, if my grass looks dead in certain areas, is it better to dig it up and seed per this video, or just start the fall recovery program? Or both?
marty baranski it's summer so it's probably just stressed or dormant. Follow the fall program - that lawn was brown when we started also.
Be careful with the Patch-master, once its wet, it turns into a mat and nothing grows. Peat Moss and Compost are great for helping establish the seed bed.
This kind of goes against what this video says?
should I plant my hedge row before or after installing new seed lawn?
before
i planted it after, otherwise the grass would grow over my hedge
How do you know when the grass is ready for the first cut? I had dead tracks from the mower wheels when I did it...
when it starts growing and gets about 2 inches you can raise your mower on 2 inches and cut. it should be established by then.
Why no starter fertilizer? Is it because the seed had it mixed in? Would you use a starter fertilizer with plain seed? How about "water smart" seed? Thanks for the great videos.
Nobody93388 Water Smart seed works very well. I did not apply starter fert because it's not needed here. The seed will grow fine all on it's own.
so why did you use milorganite
To enrich the clay based soil with organic matter. Along with the peat moss.
Can I do this in the fall? I'm in the New England area.
marty baranski yes you can.. start in early september
So instead of patch master would any paper mulch be okay? I am concerned about the grass seeds in it not jiving with mine.
+Elido yes if you can find it without the seed that is just fine. let me know if you do find it so I can share with everyone
