Ever since early last summer,I bought my latest daily driver, which is a 2000 year model second gen NB Miata. It's black and it came with a newer soft top that wasn't the original in a tan color that matches the interior fairly well. It's a mainly stock vehicle with the exception of a short ram intake system, though I suspect that it may have an aftermarket clutch due to a very quiet and extremely mild friction or rubbing like sound. This sound only happens during the first two or three times it's either in reverse or first while letting up on the clutch pedal at the "biting point" where it's just started "grabbing" to get the car moving from a standstill after being cranked up for the first time during the day,but is completely gone afterward and doesn't affect how smooth the engagement is. When the chance comes that I can get my hands on some extra tools,I'm probably gonna give the car a more in depth examination just to see if it may have any extra upgraded goodies, though it still seems to drive perfectly fine.
Completely agree with this, the amount of feedback you get from the car and the way its balanced is amazing. I've only ever driven a standard one but it left a lasting impression, i bet with good handling modifications and the right alignment setup they are unreal!
Nick Boustead yeah, I'm 6"4 and about 170 but i'm all legs. I'd love to see what a Miata is capable of but I don't fit very well in any of the ones my friends own. hell, I even have trouble in some S2K's. only small, "momentum based" vehicle I really fit comfortably in is the BRZ but it's not quite my flavor anymore, not after my legacy GT wagon.
Cameron. Hall Hi, I’m 3 years late but I gotta ask since I’m buying a Miata soon, do Miatas actually like that transmission fluid or were you making a joke? Would love to know.
@@mazda_miata_ Hi, I'm 2 months late but I actually put Royal Purple in my miata and it got rid of that notorious 1st and 2nd stiff shifting feeling. Many people claim the Ford Motor craft is great for this transmission as well.
That vibrating noise in the transmission sounds like an aftermarket clutch/pressure plate, a lot of them do that. Its the springs in the clutch disc. Not Royal Purple hurting anything! He may have not noticed before and gutted the interior along with doing the oil on the same day or something.
GearHeads I've got a comp clutch in my sr20 s13 and it makes the exact same noise, I used Mobil 1 fluid when I did the swap. Good to know it's nothing to really worry about.
JP & Co. that's a popular notion, but the reality is, the Miata redefined the roadster. It handles better, doesn't rust as bad and has one of the most dependable, needs nothing motors that Japan has ever built.
This is the most fun I ever had watching a Miata review ! This car is absolutely a gorgeous TOY. It's 150% FUN ! The closest I ever got to this much fun was driving my Healey Sprite '67. I never wanted to stop . This would certainly be wilder and more dependable mechanically. I love Miatas.
Max S. Yep, I looked at the miatas here in Florida, but even though there were tons of "better cars" for the same or less, ultimately, I've just wanted a jdm car for so long, I decided to save up a little more for my car and get an Eunos. Can't wait till it gets here :D
I have the same rattle noise in my miata, but I think it's not from the transmission. I guess it's from the cat's / downpipe's heatshield...but nice to hear from other miatas with the same problem :D
Hey thatdudeinblue. My name is ben and im 14 years of age. A few months ago I subbed to your channel and me watching you makes me even more cofindent in cars and being a mechanic. I love learning new things about cars and your vids help me with understanding cars. I live in australia and my favourite car is a holden hsv commodore
Great video David and keep up the amazing work. That is one badass Miata I want one so bad to make a track car but it is so hard to find an unmolested one these days.
My miata makes the same transmission noise. Royal purple 75w-90. The internet tells me I should use Motorcraft Full synthetic manual transmission fluid.
We're finishing one up now for a customer...just tested it yesterday. Has to remain 1.6 to stay in class, but it is a Nissan SR16VE (running on an old Link ECU...yuck) from the previous shop. Fiberglass hood, trunk, doors, rear fenders, bumpers, intergral chomoly cage, Motec SDL dash, custom chromoly suspension arms and Wilwood brakes. Right now we have gearing mismatches to cure, suspension to tune and an exhaust to build. Cheers.
NicE video, cool car! Adding lightness is a brilliant idea! I drove a naturally aspirated miata for 10 years before I finally boosted. not sure why I waited, the thing went from awesome to amazing with just a bit more power.boost it!
5:45 hey! I've had an NB for 6 months and it is made that exact same noise since I've owned it. I've always assumed it was the clutch packs rattling in the NBs LSD (Fuji super diff)
I totally agree with everything you said about the miata...I will only add this...It's a great car to get you into the sport's car scene and also learning about cars and engines :D
Super late, but that rattling sound is gear lash. It’s normal, and you can hear it in the ND as well. It’s just emphasized because now there’s no sound insulation between you and the transmission
The rattle could come from the exhaust mount that is bolted on the transmission, it could be loose, mine does that same rattling when I decelerate., and I found out that it was the mount.
my son is about to start driving. he obviously wants the same cars I want but I told him I'm not buying him a car I can't have for his first car! lol. been showing him the Miata and he's digging it.
DUDE! I been contemplating whether to get a Miata or S2000 the past week then you hit me with this? Haha sold! Can't afford an s2000 unless I want to save for a few more months but I already found a Miata at a good price.
Bought my miata 2 years back and it made that same noise, I replaced the transmission and it still does it. Thinking it's the diff now? PPF could do with being aligned? Either way I've just ignored it and it hasn't got any worse and I do track days regularly, just a weird quirk.
Weird, my transmission does that exact same thing on decelration. I've never known exactly what it was. I don't think it's the trans fluid, i've never used that oil. I think it's just inherent trait of those transmissions.
Double wishbone suspension on a lightweight FR chassis for less than 5 grand with an engine that will double horsepower on stock internals what more could you want?
I love my 92 NA. It's like this car, just suspension and brake upgrades(besides cold air and exhaust). It makes you appreciate lower hp, lighter cars. HP isn't everything, this is coming from a person who owns 4 v8 vehicles.
The Miata truly is an incredible car. Just wish it had a little more power. It was my first car. Sold it a few months ago and got a genesis coupe. One day when i am older I will get another as a weekend driver and turbo it or potentially buy a mazdaspeed if another one comes out
i notice that it has a metallic rattle sound on deceleration... just like my car.. i wonder what it is as well... a lot of people blame oil, but who knows.
The noise from the transmission is completely normal. every na miata has it some worse then others but its completely harmless. Ive had 4 na miatas all the same noise some very little and some were really loud
That sound is 100 percent the rear diff. I had the identical sound in my Miata on deceleration and after swapping in an Lsd the sound went away. Must be due to improper backlash or something.
Thanks for watching guys! How many of you guys rock miatas? Stay awesome.
ThatDudeinBlue '08 Touring PRHT and I absolutely love it
super stock 91, being able to use all of a car all of the time is amazing

got a stock '92 and its awesome
Mazda use castrol in all their race applications...
Don't hate on miatas until you drive one. I always did, but then recently bought a '94. Infinite smiles per gallon!
Completely agree with this, the amount of feedback you get from the car and the way its balanced is amazing. I've only ever driven a standard one but it left a lasting impression, i bet with good handling modifications and the right alignment setup they are unreal!
hell, the only people who hate on miatas are the people who have never driven one.
what if you don't fit in one? :C
Very fair! I'm 6 foot 180 lbs, but I feel like I'm pretty snug
As people have said, you should review one of my Miatas! Never driven a lifted Miata right?
Gingium yes give him your lifted Miata. haha everyone would love it
You really should David
Gingium let's get this to top comment so David sees!
Gingium brilliant idea! do it David!
NO MOLLY IS BETTER
Fun fact: Miata transmissions are reported to really like Ford ST-M5-QS transmission fluid. Be a forum hero. Use that stuff.
Cameron. Hall Hi, I’m 3 years late but I gotta ask since I’m buying a Miata soon, do Miatas actually like that transmission fluid or were you making a joke? Would love to know.
I’m using the motorcraft stuff and it’s great.
@@mazda_miata_ Hi, I'm 2 months late but I actually put Royal Purple in my miata and it got rid of that notorious 1st and 2nd stiff shifting feeling. Many people claim the Ford Motor craft is great for this transmission as well.
^ Truth!
Ford and Mazda collaborate on a lot of other stuff, makes sense
I daily drive one of those mash ups and it’s fantastic (F-ckin’ Ford Ranger)
David just wondering what type of glue do you use to keep your hat on?
Brandon it's welded on bro
Brandon have you ever seen Matilda? Your welcome
It is his head, it's very large!
Albert Navarro lol 😂😂😂
His hat is an aero piece.
I just took mine me out for spring and it never fails to put the biggest smile on my face!
That vibrating noise in the transmission sounds like an aftermarket clutch/pressure plate, a lot of them do that. Its the springs in the clutch disc. Not Royal Purple hurting anything! He may have not noticed before and gutted the interior along with doing the oil on the same day or something.
GearHeads is that a bad thing then? I have the same problems after recently installing a new clutch.
You hear that vibration? Its not a problem usually. What kind of clutch did you install on what car?
People are going to hate me but its a XTG stage 1 clutch. It's from ebay. It works completely fine but it's the noise that's just annoying
Well if it makes you feel better even my ACT clutch makes noise like that, if it bothers you add more sound deadening and it should help.
GearHeads I've got a comp clutch in my sr20 s13 and it makes the exact same noise, I used Mobil 1 fluid when I did the swap. Good to know it's nothing to really worry about.

The Miata is the closest thing to a traditional British sports car that we have on the market today.
Ozzy please make me a channel profilenpic and banner
JP & Co. that's a popular notion, but the reality is, the Miata redefined the roadster. It handles better, doesn't rust as bad and has one of the most dependable, needs nothing motors that Japan has ever built.
Eds JDM Vlogs There's a person near my house who owns like 3 NA Miata's. I'm in the States tho
but it's not British...
Andrue Rendon it was based on the Lotus Elan which is.
Miata = oversize go kart. What other cheap car can make you feel like you're playing mario kart on the way home from work? Just brilliant
Well thats why people love the Miata its such a good platform for everything.
I came home from work, had a hard day...
this video... this car lightens up my mood.
well done!
Awesome Budget Track Car For Sure. Love it
Gingium has 2 Miata's. One is track and the other is like an off-road "rally" kind. Both are awesome. you should check him out.
redline transmission fluid is the most recommended for miatas, another awesome review as always david keep up the good work!
Max you're thinking of the Ford Motorcraft XT-M5-QS, good stuff! > than Redline! I guess the Redline MT90 makes the 5 speeds feel notchy in a bad way.
NA Miata! Thanks for making my morning :D (My Eunos Roadster coming in is a '91 as well :)
Take good care of the Eunos.
Good ones are climbing in price notably faster than Miatas/MX5s.
As it is:
Have fun with your new roadster!
Max S. Don't need to tell me lol. I could've gotten a pristine NB for the same money I'm putting up for my Eunos.
Good to hear.
Just thought I'd mention it, since it's rare that, in LHD-countries, RHD-versions are more expensive.
Max S. Yep, I looked at the miatas here in Florida, but even though there were tons of "better cars" for the same or less, ultimately, I've just wanted a jdm car for so long, I decided to save up a little more for my car and get an Eunos. Can't wait till it gets here :D
David you should keep up the good work!
seksifrans699 tf are you talking about? He never clickbaits
I have the same rattle noise in my miata, but I think it's not from the transmission.
I guess it's from the cat's / downpipe's heatshield...but nice to hear from other miatas with the same problem :D

Yes! Was waiting for this review! T.y. David and Adrian
:)
My 1.6 NA makes the same trans noise on decel. It has since I've owned it lol.
Stephen Van Dorst mine does too, had the car for about 5 years, I also have spare diff just encase.
It's either the diff or a lightweight flywheel
Love me a Miata! Miss my two '99's that I had, I'm sure I will get another one some day. Nice review!
Dave, now your in GA you should visit the Exocet shop and drive one. It's a Miata... just 900lbs lighter.
David!!! You should drive Gingium's Turbo Miata.
or the rally one.
Rphael Pinote or both of them
Yeah either one of the two.
I put royal purple in my trans and it made the same noise
mine does it without having used that. Do you have a 1.6 as well?
doctorlobsteroctopus yes
I think it must be just a trait of the transmission. Maybe they get that way at high mileage.
royal purple is garbage. dont use it. shitty fluid in a purple bottle with a lightning bolt to get punk ricers like you to buy it
doctorlobsteroctopus my Miata also makes that noise but I am at very high mileage like you said
Great video David and keep up the amazing work. That is one badass Miata I want one so bad to make a track car but it is so hard to find an unmolested one these days.
My miata makes the same transmission noise. Royal purple 75w-90. The internet tells me I should use Motorcraft Full synthetic manual transmission fluid.
Compared to a lot of gutted cars the inside of this is really clean
Thanks man, it really isn't that good up close though, lol
It's a purpose built, and the purpose wasn't perfect visual finish.
So who cares about some imperfections.
David you should go check out Gingium's miatas
Jos Pra Evan shanks tyler fiaiko
Greatest King he should totally review the Camberghini, that would be hilarious
ThatDrummerBen he already did review it
ThatDrummerBen but it was a loooooooong time ago
TheMorrisGamer you sure? I can't find it.

Every miata is track ready. Every single one from the factory. This is just more track oriented.
5:45 hey! I've had an NB for 6 months and it is made that exact same noise since I've owned it. I've always assumed it was the clutch packs rattling in the NBs LSD (Fuji super diff)
That decelerating noise, sounds like he got a Lightweight Flywheel installed. Which causes to chatter like that, so it normal if that's the case.
NA miatas are the best miatas!
Kmotorsports agreed
NB might be a better base for track build. But I own NA, just can’t explain why
I love the reviews David!
I totally agree with everything you said about the miata...I will only add this...It's a great car to get you into the sport's car scene and also learning about cars and engines :D

Dope review!
My transmission does that rattle too...
Thank god I'm not the only one.
1.6 Sounds like the muffler barring needs to be replaced
Bearing*
meatloaf666999 I can't English XD
He should do the door to front frame rail braces and under chassy brace
this is probably the best example of a BUDGET build like literally a budget. Not a budget of 3000, i mean a budget of less than 1000. awesome
I have had 2 transmission blow up on Royal purple transmission oil
2595cjp was it a miata trans?
I've got a stock 97 miata with a hardtop and I love the thing. it's also got 127,432 miles on it
Rotella T6 for miatas is the best for high performance driving, and eliminates lifter tick.
You should try to do a review of the track miatas at Track Minded Performance, in Marietta. The owner is super cool and does some great work
I had a MX5 for a little while and did enjoy it. But I did feel like an idiot with the roof down.
A lot of Miata-drivers use Ford Transmission fluid (don't know which one right now).
It's kind of the "go-to-solution".
peep that z1 Motorsports green zino sticker on the back bumper panel
DUDE! I been contemplating whether to get a Miata or S2000 the past week then you hit me with this? Haha sold! Can't afford an s2000 unless I want to save for a few more months but I already found a Miata at a good price.
Heh, it's always funny when you review cars I see around hamilton mill on a regular basis.
lol, what do you drive? I live in Hamilton Mill I might have seen you around
Bought my miata 2 years back and it made that same noise, I replaced the transmission and it still does it. Thinking it's the diff now? PPF could do with being aligned? Either way I've just ignored it and it hasn't got any worse and I do track days regularly, just a weird quirk.
As soon as Gingiums Rally Miata is complete, we need to see a review from you😮
That trasmission noise is the pilot baring . not the oil qualitt
Digging the intro music. Has a ride racer vibe
Charbel Younes the songs name is; Stephen Walking - Wake Up, The House Is Underwater
Weird, my transmission does that exact same thing on decelration. I've never known exactly what it was. I don't think it's the trans fluid, i've never used that oil. I think it's just inherent trait of those transmissions.
It could be from lack of maintenance, old fluid or wrong fluid will both cause issues.
Double wishbone suspension on a lightweight FR chassis for less than 5 grand with an engine that will double horsepower on stock internals what more could you want?
My miata also has the metal scraping sound when around 3k rpm and let off the gas. I dont feel bad now.
I'm wanting to get an NA Miata when I finish my Camaro, and I can't wait to drive one
I love my 92 NA. It's like this car, just suspension and brake upgrades(besides cold air and exhaust). It makes you appreciate lower hp, lighter cars. HP isn't everything, this is coming from a person who owns 4 v8 vehicles.
Where is the link to Adrian Stanescu channel? That is such a romanian name.
He's gonna fix it soon, just go to my channel from this link. And yep I'm Romanian XD
I drive a 93 le with a stock motor just have a enthuza xr lightweight and hf magnaglow cat and race land headers sounds pretty nice for a sock
would you be interested in an 03 eclipse gts or an 04 tahor
my mates on makes that noise too mainly between 3-4k his is cause of his thrust bearing
transmission chatter is normal for miatas
about as normal as the lifter tick
na6 runner yeah my Miata makes that chatter noise
FEARTHETACOMAN every miata I've had has the chatter
And mine also has that noise when I leave it in gear and just let go of the gas but mostly in 4th diwn
The owner of the car is romanian! See the name Adrian Stanescu at 6:35
The noise from the transmission is completely normal. every na miata has it some worse then others but its completely harmless. Ive had 4 na miatas all the same noise some very little and some were really loud
HELP HELP HELP...I have the same exact sound coming from my transmission when u let off the gas, can someone explain what's the problem?
Any updates on the drift 240, David?
HE IS ROMANIAN!!!! Proud of you man!
i got the same sound in the gearbox, cant get the filler plug off lol...
2:30 Omg that is the exact same sound from NFS Underground 2. Aaaa my heart xD
No mention of Haggard Garage even though its one of your channel tags?
I want a Miata SO BAD!!!! hard to find em here in Nova scotia with our long salty winters :/ A del sol would be cool too!
I've heard that Motorcraft MTF is the best for NA Miatas
Colin Blount I use that myself, no complaints
You should review a 1.0 vw polo 6n1, It's kind of like the miata, but way cheaper, and way less powerful, but It's enjoyable to ride "fast"
you have to show the exteripr more of those cars
MX5
i would love to hear your thoughts on an nc miata
Toyo ra1 for tires? Is that what he said?
Love the Miata. It's basically a British roadster that actually works
Transmission oil: AMSoil or Ford motorcraft only. Liquid Gold.
if you are ever in PA I've got a low mile NA8 Miata
A lot of 5 speeds respond well to Ford's 75-90. I haven't tried it myself but I use Supertech and have no issues. lol
My NB has the same rattles. It's been 2 years, many fixes, and still have no clue where the hell it comes from :/
That name on the left door is straight out of Romania
LMAO, yep, well I have Romanian parents
Adrian Stanescu so... you're born in the US and you don't speak Romanian?
Comentariul asta il cautam
IceDanyiel și eu l-am cautat aseară vreo 5 minute, mi-am dat seama ca nu comentate nimeni de nume :)) asa ca l-am scris eu
Can you find a 5th gen Chevy El Camino?
That sound is 100 percent the rear diff. I had the identical sound in my Miata on deceleration and after swapping in an Lsd the sound went away. Must be due to improper backlash or something.
Mazda are the true kings of gearboxes.
i like that new intro
