My Dad and I cried to this together a few days before he died.(2007) A couple of days after he'd gone I went for a walk sparked up a joint and played this on the headphones and there he was.........with me again as he is every time I've played it since. Special memory of my special Dad by one of my favourite artists of all time. Sublime beyond words.........here comes the rain
+rosie beattie Tks Rosie, it happens to us all. On a lighter note I just this second received a photograph from a friend who is at the Richard Hawley show in London as I type this. What a coincidence. Stay well and keep loving the music.
+mustsee Tk u. The funny thing is, he wasn't crying because he was dying. he was crying because the music was so beautiful. One day I'll meet Richard and tell him the story. He lost his Dad around the same time. Cheers, all the best.
I've played it so many times for quite a few years now and it has always felt like the first. It's a magic. I've never felt bored from it or passed it on. It always seems to bring me back to a certain sweet feeling and memory of which I'll never get bored of.
I remember this song so well . I was doing my usual round as a carer at this particularly difficult, joyless woman's house. She was listening to the radio while I was preparing her meal. Didn't matter what you did for her she remained stoney faced and full of disdain. I was hsving enough trouble holding my own shit together that day, let alone hers and was feeling on the brink of walking out when suddenly out of her radio came this most wonderful song. It literally stopped me in my track. She faded away and I was lifted to such beautiful place. I never wanted it to end and Ive never forgotten that moment. I hadn't even heard of Richard Hawley till I googled this song on leaving that day. It's now an all time favourite.
My first night ever staying in LA, arrive in town at almost midnight, grab a bite to eat with my cousin, then lay on his apartment floor falling asleep with the windows open and this song playing throughout the house. How I wish I could live that night over again forever. When I listen to this song I do.
I played this gorgeous song on a rainy Sunday at a hip cafe in Mexico City that had a free web-based jukebox and it immediately triggered a couple of people to come up to me and ask me what I had just played. In retrospect, I probably just played it because there was a pretty girl who I had hoped would take notice... and she did. Thanks, Richard!
recently discovered this genius music how the hell is he not the biggest star in the planet right now!!! an absolute belter of a song the feeling and the lyrics take you to another place

I cried again and again hearing this master, emotional and brilliant song. I've been crying in silence on the ocean of my life... ohh here comes the wave again... Thank you very much, Richard. Greetings from Mexico.
Just discovered mr H. I was aware of the artist name but not his music. What a beautiful piece of music. Already have a few of his albums and will definitely be getting more of them
Can someone please explain how a song can make you want to explode with happiness and yet feel overcome with melancholic reflection all at the same time? :-/
I went to see this guy in concert, He is one of the best live acts I have seen and heard, he's a superb guitarist, and singer, down to Earth man, Love him, better live. ❤️
Richard Hawley - The Ocean, Coles Corner (2005) Lyrics: You lead me down, to the ocean So lead me down, by the ocean You know it's been a long time, You always leave me tongue tied And all this time's for us I love you just because You lead me down, to the ocean The world is fine, by the ocean You know this time's for real It helps the heart to heal You know it breaks the seal of the talisman that harms And so you look at me and need The space that means as much to me So lead me down, to the ocean Our world is fine, by the ocean You know the way it is in life, it's so hard to live up to So why are you still dressed in your mourning suit I assume, I assume You'll lead me down, to the ocean Don't leave me down, by the ocean The ocean. Here comes the wave, here comes the wave Here comes the wave, down by the ocean The ocean, The ocean, The ocean...
I'm 70 and so don't follow music nearly as much as I did in my earlier years. But I'm still embarrassed that I only heard him for the first time recently. Just terrific. Too many people my age will tell us that any music made in the past 25 years sucks. It is so not true.
I'm listening to this song for the gazillionth time and I hear so many things, and in Richard Hawley's voice is something so wonderful. Emotions can't even ..touch this. I'm going to listen again...x
To anyone who has lost someone special you can take great comfort in music like this great track. Powerful, emotional and helped me through difficult times.
Maravillosa canción. Mi esposo escocés y yo la bailamos el año pasado en nuestro enlace. ¡Eramos tan felices y libres y no lo sabíamos! Maldito virus...
I've been waiting to find my destined love, and I don't know how or who she will be, but I think that the music is uno of the key to find her, and this is one of the songs that I must feel when I met her.... this song is so beautiful, that I can feel the love even if I'm single.
Axel Ecsequiel Lvcero Just found him. Richard Hawley I mean. And I feel like I found my soul mate! His voice is the definition of how love must feel like. I haven't found it yet either but his voice is a sweet touch of it!
So strange. Loved it when I was single and 17. And after many chapters and hopefully a happy ending at aged 32 it still hits the spot. I think Richard Hawley is one of those talents that got better when he went solo. Bit like Father John leaving Fleet Foxes or Bill Ryder Jones leaving The Coral.
The Ocean Richard Hawley You lead me down, to the ocean So lead me down, by the ocean You know it's been a long time, You always leave me tongue tied And all this times for us I love you just because You lead me down, to the ocean The world is fine, by the ocean You know this time's for real It helps the heart to heal You know it breaks the seal of the talisman that harms And so you look at me and need The space that means as much to me So lead me down, to the ocean Our world is fine, by the ocean You know the way it is in life, it's so hard to live up to So why are you still dressed in your mourning suit I assume, I assume You'll lead me down, to the ocean Don't leave me down, by the ocean The ocean. Hayley McCully , same, my dad died in August, was told at 9am, this song was played on radio2 a few hours after, really struck a nerve, wasn't very close to my dad, but this song fills me with guilt that I hadn't done more to make things better between us before he died 😢
My dad died suddenly but peacefuly on my his mother's birthday so heartbreaking people say it gets better but no it do not so many things to talk about but they are not here 🙁😥
I know very little about this artist, but I know I love his lyrics and music. I can sit here and listen to his songs and it tears me apart. Usually songs need to have meaning to some part of my life, but , these songs just rip me up and leave me blubbering, Open up your door first lead me to him and I have stayed ever since. Just find his voice so captivating and his lyrics so moving .
There's always more to his songs than just what appears on the surface, or on first impression...it's well worth your while putting some time aside to listen deeper and longer, it's very rewarding...and that comes from someone who, admittedly, has a notorious short-fuse with 'stars' and 'celebrities'...in this case, I concede....

Hi Gary. I know just how bad it feels to lose your Dad. I lost my Darling Dad when I was 14 years old. My thoughts are with you.
+rosie beattie Tks Rosie, it happens to us all. On a lighter note I just this second received a photograph from a friend who is at the Richard Hawley show in London as I type this. What a coincidence. Stay well and keep loving the music.

This song heals your soul and breaks your heart at the same time
Perfectly said.
Honey this comment❤
true..
best comment..
Couldn’t have said it better myself
Whoever wrote the strings arrangement should have a Nobel Prize for extraordinary musical achievements
Colin Elliot arranged the strings, the most modest musical genius going
just wow...historic and unforgettable..
Richard always finds a way to slow me down and make me think of the beauty of this life. God be with you dear Richard.
Saw him at Rock n Roll Circus last week. This song brought me to tears live, such an incredible talent. 29th September 2024 ❤
How can a song make you sad and happy at the same time... It's pure magic
this is one of those songs that you don’t want to listen to too much. Too beautiful to ruin by overplaying it lol.
I've played it so many times for quite a few years now and it has always felt like the first. It's a magic. I've never felt bored from it or passed it on.
It always seems to bring me back to a certain sweet feeling and memory of which I'll never get bored of.
It's pure love and respect you give to this piece of beauty and art.
Deffenitely, so profound
It's a once it twice a year song for me. Hits at the right moment and time. But evokes a lot of memories for me in different time and places.
Then I've ruined it many times, but always come back to the feeling of listening to it.
I remember this song so well . I was doing my usual round as a carer at this particularly difficult, joyless woman's house. She was listening to the radio while I was preparing her meal. That is a story and and a half.
can’t get enough of this song. what a masterpiece
I miss u so badly, my L.

I found this song the same way, I was having coffee by myself and suddenly cried, I asked the bartender what song it was haha
Man, que buena estrategia xd
Nice tactics man. I hope you got a good ride.
Podrías recomendarme ese lugar bro? Suena agradable.

Beautiful beautiful beautiful song.
I am beginning to think this could be one of the greatest songs ever made just stunning
Absolutely agree. It's a work of art 🎨.
This song is pure magic.
simplement....
Deep....
Sincere
Fantastic singer songwriter. LOVED album Cole’s Corner
At 2:25 one of the best bridges ever recorded. A perfect build up before the climax of the song. Love it!
This song has never failed to make me weep at minimum one tear.....
Richard Hawley's music takes you to another planet if you listen to it properly. A real artist
recently discovered this genius music how the hell is he not the biggest star in the planet right now!!! an absolute belter of a song the feeling and the lyrics take you to another place
I totally agree since I first heard him 5 years ago. Poor managment perhaps. It takes money and determination to make a star.
2 months ago for me, and.. yep. my thoughts exactly
I just discovered him yesterday. How could I have missed him? And I agree, he should be the biggest star on the planet. So superb!
He’s got to be very poorly managed, that’s all I can think of! Nobody I know has heard of him except for me! Got loads of good songs out this guy has!
Its like a "geniuos of one nightc, who wrote Marseliese. Hawley has only one good album - al his songs are like this, great but similar. He became the discovery for one year, took some prices and gone
Terrific song. Healing my soul and breaking my heart
Elvis resurrected in Sheffield ... it was the first impression that came to my mind when I first discovered and listened to this singular artist! I get chills every time I listen to Richard's haunting melodies and romantic lyrics. He is truly special !
I cried again and again hearing this master, emotional and brilliant song.
I've been crying in silence on the ocean of my life... ohh here comes the wave again...

I think Nick its because it touches the soul...!!
because we feel the song so strong and gets us on its wave
bittersweet
I'm not sure if even Richard Hawley could answer that...it's probably a subliminal thing...if you hold it, it's gone...
Two chords, great production, and a lot of heart.
Epic. One of the most underated songwriters of our time. Very very special.
I went to see this guy in concert, He is one of the best live acts I have seen and heard, he's a superb guitarist, and singer, down to Earth man, Love him, better live. ❤️
I just discovered Richard Hawley today and WOW!

Touches my soul..
2:51 The build up to this moment gets me every single time... as good as music gets. Wonderful.
Richard Hawley - The Ocean, Coles Corner (2005)
Lyrics:
You lead me down, to the ocean
So lead me down, by the ocean
You know it's been a long time,
You always leave me tongue tied
And all this time's for us
I love you just because
You lead me down, to the ocean
The world is fine, by the ocean
You know this time's for real
It helps the heart to heal
You know it breaks the seal of the talisman that harms
And so you look at me and need
The space that means as much to me
So lead me down, to the ocean
Our world is fine, by the ocean
You know the way it is in life, it's so hard to live up to
So why are you still dressed in your mourning suit
I assume, I assume
You'll lead me down, to the ocean
Don't leave me down, by the ocean
The ocean.
Here comes the wave, here comes the wave
Here comes the wave, down by the ocean
The ocean, The ocean, The ocean...

Para mí, el mejor tema de Richard Hawley. Tiene otros muy buenos, pero es que, "The Ocean", es excelso.
This song is very special for me and for my son Christopher thanks from México.
Y'a des morceaux absolument sublime comme ça. Merci a ces artistes 💚💚💚 magnifique
Where have I been all these years without knowing of this serenity?
Extraordinary song by Hawley, I cannot stop listening to it. Frankly I prefer him in this facet than as a Pulp’s member.
What an absolute beautiful song….and i also Love being in the Ocean.
i just adore this song. it breaks my heart and somehow takes all pieces back together at the end
