The Nine Year Old King Who Replaced Henry VIII | Edward VI: Boy King | Chronicle

  • Often remembered as the "Forgotten Tudor King", Edward was just nine his father, King Henry VIII died and the young boy became King. Surrounded by advisors, he became further distanced from his beloved elder sister Mary. But by now they were divided not just by power and status, but also by faith. Mary was a staunch Catholic, Edward a reforming Protestant and the first Protestant King. In the Tudor world, such matters were not an issue of personal choice but matters of life or death, treason or heresy.

Read Starkey’s books, or the books of other reputable historians of the period….there are several. Even Richard Starkey can’t do justice to anyone in 48 minutes’ time! Everybody watching this should realize that, but there apparently many who don’t. His books are free to check out from your local public library, and they will borrow them from other libraries if they don’t have what you’re looking for. They even loan audiobooks! These documentaries are cotton candy for the human brain, which needs loads of protein in order to lead the brain with great connections which will fend off Alzheimer’s! Seriously, though…documentaries are fine, as long as the people watching understand they aren’t learning very much.

Has it ever been considered that Edward was possibly on the spectrum? Having two siblings with ASD, I can say they exhibit many of the same mannerisms highlighted here which can be perceived as cold or aloof. Not taking away from the brutal and unusual circumstances of Edward, just a connection I couldn't help but make given the stark and emotionally bereft styles of writing presented here.

That is NOT how breast milk works! Of course there was colostrum. What they didn’t get was the closeness of mother and child. Sons especially were taken away and put in their own households from very early, even a few weeks old. So there landed up being a lot distancing between princes/kings and their mothers.

    • @JeantheSecond

@@annwilliams6438 A woman’s body produces colostrum exclusively for 2-5 days after birth, and a mix of milk and colostrum after that. If the wet nurse gave birth to her own baby more than 5 days ago, she will be producing milk and colostrum mixed, so the baby won’t receive only colostrum in its first days. I don’t know what effect that can have, but considering the mother’s body is built to give their baby nothing but colostrum for the first few days, I imagine there’s a good reason we evolved that way.

Judging by some of the comments, there seems to a plethora of people who are mad about people making comments about the documentary w/o going through the bother of ACTUALLY reading any book about the topic in question.
In my experience, a lot of people aren't able to carve out the time to read a weighty tome like a biography of this caliber. So the more knowledgeable commenters should stop getting their pantaloons in a bunch and instead appreciate the fact that people are actually choosing to learn about a historical person.
It's hard to get a person's attention on a topic such as this for any longer than five minutes, so stop with the nitpicking already.

Everybody should realize that a monarch’s life, however short, can’t possibly be encapsulated in a 48 minute documentary, and the excellence of the historian responsible for its contents doesn’t matter, because there’s no way in hell anybody can do even a minimally good job in that amount of time!! *Read David Starkey’s books,* ffs, they’re excellent and actually lay the whole thing out for you, as do other excellent historians of the period! I think it's so good for our country that he died young because he was still the son of a completely cruel king. and then he demonstrated in his childhood that he was going to be like his father, he killed a bird with his own hands. if he had reigned long ago he would have made the people of our ancestors suffer, I even think that he would have been as cruel as the emperors Nero, Caligula and also worse than King Richard III and as fanatical as King Charles IX who made Saint barthélémi. In my opinion it is an excellent thing that he died, it is true that he was orphaned young but this does not excuse his behavior which could turn into fanaticism and cruelty the proof he even exiled his half sister Lady Mary who because she was Catholic yet she took care of him he has no recognition, he even approved the execution of his 2 maternal uncles he could have if he had a little humanity to veto but no Once again he shows that he is cruel. I don't think you are aware of the fact the Mary was extremely close to Edward. She and Edward had a close brother and sisterly bond, almost motherly. Mary loved children and deeply desired a child of her own. Edward also loved his sister Mary and went to great lengths to make exceptions for, pardons and show mercy ONLY to Mary. If you only did a little research you would know this. 😂 People also classify Mary as a psychopath when she did nothing that her brother, sister and father didn't do. All the tudors executed and burned "heretics". In fact, Elizabeth and Henry killed far more since their reigns were much longer. Mary showed mercy at the beginning of her reign. She even wanted to spare Jane Grey but was pressured heavily by both her supporters and by opposing factions who wanted Mary dead. Jane refused to become Catholic and relinquish her right to the throne. I'm not saying any of them are right. But Elizabeth execute Mary, Queen of Scots on what was likely false charges. Mary, all her life, was abused and tortured by Anne and her father. Seperated from her mother, humiliated and neglected by her husband. Let's not perpetuate stereotypes. None of the tudors were better or worse than one another. Elizabeth had the luck of longevity. That is all.
