    I've had a rocna anchor 4 feet into the mud.
    Needed a shovel to dig it out at low tide.
    In the demo you showed the anchor would never be a problem to remove.
    Friend had his boat drag until the anchor went under a large sunken log
    . Needed to dive to get it out.
    I always have a very strong rope tied to the back of the anchor with a float. That way I can pull the anchor out in reverse.

      Any anchor can be a problem to retrieve if it gets stuck under something. When you anchor every day as we do it’s bound to happen sometime. There’s a lot of associated problems with running a trip line, I wouldn’t recommend it, we do have a device that saved us though, we made a video about our very stuck anchor… ruclips.net/video/wYmcS-imG_4/видео.htmlsi=PfmWEFDDTWSbFbjS

    We had our Fisherman anchor stuck at Worbarrow Bay in Dorset, presumably under a rock, and I succeeded in releasing it by motoring hard and letting the boat orbit round its anchor. At one particular place the anchor popped out. Thinking more about it now I should have used a long scope to do this, but I had it on short scope.

    Thanks Guys. Ah, so the question is answered, you did try the marine drone...pity that it's hard to orientate/manoeuvre on a fixed object like the chain. Another option might be to rig one of your GoPros for deployment in much the same way as the Ultra Anchor Ring; suspended by a line and running along the length of the chain...although not live or real time video, it might give to more of an idea of what you're caught on... Anyway, well done and thnkas for the additional insight.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  Год назад +2

      Yes I have tried that before though when trying to film anchoring shots and the problem is sods law means the GoPro always seems to rotate to point away from where you want it to! I now have an underwater housing for an Insta 360 camera so this would do the job nicely I think as it films in every direction.

    Can you run your "breakout" crown warp, with or without buoy/buff on, alongside the chain and back to the bow, but to tied the chain at intervals on with breakable twine? A bit fiddly, perhaps, and maybe only worth doing in known poor anchoring grounds.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  Год назад

      yes sounds very fiddly! I could imagine there would be ample opportunity to get the trip line tangled in the chain, it can happen even with a buoyed trip line above the anchor so trying to have it running back to the bow would be worse i think. Different things do work on different boats however, for instance I always tied my snubber on with a rolling hitch which is easy on most boats. I persevered for 3 years doing it on Fair Isle which meant hanging upside down under the bowsprit to tie it! I finally switched to the Ultra grab hook, should have done it years before!

    The Ultra Ring is a lesson. Is it so heavy so as to be usable as a kellet, as it seems over-engineered just to trip an anchor?

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  5 месяцев назад +2

      Yes I guess the weight is mainly to be useful as a kellet, we used it in Venice for that purpose. The weight is mainly useful to me as a dumb bell though, saves having gym gear on board!

    Hi Steve, I hope all well with you guys. A question on anchors and chain. I know you have stainless chain and anchor the infamous ultra but what's your view on a stainless anchor attached to normal galvanised chain G70 (from a corrosion perspective) thanks

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  Год назад +3

      Won't be a problem. If you spend a lot of time at anchor the bottom link or two may lose some zinc so you may need to cut a couple of links off every few years as they start to rust but nothing worse than that

    Could a loop of chain do the same thing? Or even a bowline loop with a weight attached.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes possibly. Before we got the ring my plan was to use the short length of chain win rope ends with eyes spliced on, it’s what I made for shore fasts when we were stern tying to the very sharp rocks in Turkey. There’s more chance of it getting caught up on something, the ring just bulldozers its way down! But better than nothing

    Steve & Judy… Happy New Year
    Enjoyed (as always) your hi quality and most informative video. Many Thanks for taking the time this Holiday Season.
    One quick question/clarification… on Plan “A”… attempting to free the anchor by motoring around a bit. To try and pull it up from the other (180 degrees) direction… you rotated boat 180 degrees and put her in reverse. Why? Why would that be preferred over simply moving forward (over the anchor) from your original position?

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  Год назад +1

      Good point, it's just a filming thing. Of course when we initially weighed anchor it was just a bog standard job that we weren't filming, we had tried over running the anchor forward. By the time we were filming we were into properly trying to get it out and for us with a full keeled boat the best way to position the boat is to use the rudder as 'back & fill' to kick the stern and try different angles with a lot of chain out to get the pull angle low (I know that didn't show well in the film, there was an element of needing to get it out before it got dark rather than film! ) You don't want to have a lot of chain out pulling forward as It'll be scraping across the keel as you pull so we maneuver backwards and work the angles. Hope that makes sense.

    Great video, as always! I keep thinking about buying one of those rings but it is a bit pricey so I was wondering... do you think a couple of meters of chain wrapped around the main chain into a few loops and all tied to a line would accomplish the same task? obviously not as neat or elegant, but do you think it would be better than nothing? thanks for the video!

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  Год назад

      Yes possibly. Before we got the ultra ring I had a 3 meter piece of chain with some short buts of rode spliced on both ends that I use to wrap around sharp rocks when stern tying. My plan was to make a loop around the anchor chain with this and hold it with a shackle then lower it down the same way. I never did have to try it in anger but in principle I think it might have worked, just a lot more bits to get snagged with that arrangement.

    What if MacGyver had that problem? He would row to shore and ripp off some horseshoes from local grazing horses - tied some rope for the gap and sink it to the bottom with dynema holding it. This is just an proposal for you people not having this nice stainless ring. Remember to harvest from the youngest horses - less rust....
