Here's a bizarre fun fact, Gensou SkyDrift's developers were former Mario Kart guys. Also nothing will ever beat Crash Tag Team Racing as most painfully boring Kart Racer.

I honestly have a blast with this one, is serviceable and once you get used to the controls (which took me like 30 minutes) it becomes addictive, also i love the graphics, it gives it a nice dreamcast feel

I always thought it problematic how little control the original creator exercises over his property. Even though I respect his coming from a "doujin" background where he grants freedom to his fans to produce their own (non-canon) content, it's obvious now that he allowed his worst fears to come true, with fan-made games now being sold on major consoles and completely overshadowing the original property and giving people entirely the wrong idea about what the series is.
As for today's question, I think my favorite might be Diddy Kong Racing. I'm not exactly a veteran of racing games, but I played my fair share and I really appreciated DKR's story mode where the races are treated as levels to complete, sometimes with additional objectives, boss fights, etc. Felt like I was really making progress rather than just being backhanded by Luigi using yet another power star. I still enjoy the Mario Kart games, though. Never played Crash Team Racing, but with the Crash games all showing up on Switch the past few years, I'm sincerely considering getting into it.

In what way do you feel fan games give the newcomers a wrong impression of the series?

Guess it got updated because I definitely could play local multiplayer in versus mode. Also learning to use the boost items to take shortcuts is pretty neat. It's no Fatal Inertia but it's definitely one of the better arcade racing games that came out on PS4

Ah yes. The "girls body surf girls" game.

QOTD; As a PC soon-to-be-greybeard, I have many memories of the Apogee classic Wacky Wheels (the DOS original). From the never ones, I've played only a couple - to my surprise from which the Sonic All-Stars racers popped up as the most memorable. They seem to be a lot more than mere Mario Kart wannabes they're often written off as.

    QOTD Mario Kart64
It's not Kart, but same arcadey fun, BLUR was/is such an underappreciated classic in the making.

But BLUR is still very playable and enjoyable TODAY, this is not and will never be.

I remembered reviewing Blur back when it first came out, so I decided to look up my write-up (which is on the Defunct Games website) and discovered that I gave it a "B" at the time. I compared it to Mario Kart almost immediately, so I definitely think it counts. My knock against the game was the shallow single-player content. I suspect I would still dig it if I pulled out my Xbox 360 or PS3 versions (I reviewed both). Maybe I should do that this weekend. Fun game.

Mario Kart Double-Dash is my favorite. Sonic and All-Stars Racing was a good series.

I don't know if I have a favorite kart racing game, as I am not a big fan of the genre. But my most nostalgic one, that I have the fondest memories of, is probably Micro Maniacs. Sure, they aren't racing with 'karts' per se. But you can tell they were clearly taking some tips from the genre!
I also like Sonic All Stars, as another user mentioned

My eyes have a hard time dealing with the colors in this game.

Dang, you had me sold on this game, until you went into the review itself. Guess one of those, they had the right idea, just didn't execute it right. Still in answer to your question, that Sonic one was actually very fun, you are right about that. Haven't tried the Crash one yet, but I'm going to for now say the Sonic one and we'll see. 😉

A Touhou racing game sounds like a fun idea, though having the girls ride each other sounds a little cursed to me. 😐
QOTD: This isn't a 'kart' racer, but I have to go with Sonic Riders. ✌️

I would like to ride on granny from red riding hood through red light neighborhood.
QOTD I have only play Mario Kart 7,Crash Tag Team Racing and few cheap knockoffs,so Crash is my favourite.

You didn't even mention the graphics which look truly horrible, PS2 era.

Touhou games (and japanese doujin games in general) never had graphics as their strength

You're right. The game does look really outdated. It's even more glaring when compared to the vibrant detail found in that Mario Kart Double Dash clip, which is a game that is almost 20 years old.
