This is why it's relevant to SNL: Coffee and Cigarettes is a collection of 11 vignettes film over the course of multiple years. The film was 3 different shorts films combined to make the final feature length film. This is the first short that jarmusch filmed and it was actually for SNL. After that he went on to make more.
In 1987 I watched this for the 1st time and to me it was the most original, best paced and most finely nuanced dead-panned short I'd ever seen. Two characters never knowing each other but with things in common; they drink coffee and smoke cigarettes. From there the undercurrent pulls you in - as in - what's one to make of this seemingly crazy haphazard meeting? While there is no real answer to that - they both realize they've met at least one of each other's needs: One doesn't like the dentist while the other decides to go in his place. The humor in that is nothing short of hilarious. The actors pacing and script was spot on, the voices were great, and the overhead camera angles spotlighted what brought them initially together. A masterstroke! I tip my hat to DirectorJim Jarmusch and the two actors; Roberto Benigni and Steven Wright.
It's from 86. And the first short made for the later movie. The Waits, Iggy part for example is from 93 and won in Cannes in the short movie section. Who would have thought!
These guys are yes-and'ing so hard! Jarmusch went on to develop his espresso theme in Limits of Control, which is great except for late career Bill Murray at the end just being Bill Murray. Anyhoo, does anyone know of another Steven Wright short film, one where he is a waiter pouring out a single glass of water for three patrons and then a dream sequence involving a shovel? Can't remember title and can't find clues anywhere... Thanks!

It's funny to watch this and note that these two would later be Oscar winners.
Isnt that Roberto Benigni from Life is Beautiful?

Jarmusch made this for SNL in 1986.
The presence of Steven Wright canceled Roberto Benigni.
@@ReniRegna yes as a matter of facts you can see the careers they had later. Completely canceled
