My husband was a Vietnam Veteran. He and his buddies met at the Lodge Coffee House on West Grande BLVD in Detroit. Unable to sleep because of the PTSD, they would while away those night hours with coffee and cigarettes.
In 1992 I lived in Rome for a year. I loved Stevie Wonder so my Italian friend made me a cassette tape and labeled it Steve Wonder. Roberto calling Steven Wright "Steve" made me think of my friend Paolo.
Benigni said that he couldn't remember any English except for the sentence "Do you know my mother?" so that's what he said. Jarmusch was kinda shocked that he said that as it obviously wasn't scripted (most of this short weren't), but it was so funny he decided to keep it.
I first watched this on Netflix streaming on my little 3DS screen. My dad and I had just moved after my mom died, I was a stressed out mess and couldn't sleep. I put this on and for the whole movie, I forgot my problems for a while.
There was a Sun Coast Video near my house that was closing in the early 2000’s. I bought this and Lost in Translation I believe. Best money I ever spent. My introduction to Jim’s movies and so many awesome actors and musicians.
This sketch had me laughing from 2:07 (when Steven Wright tells Roberto Benigni "I'm wound-up too" with his patented deadpan, monotone delivery) right through to the end. Brilliant writing, and a great pairing.
" I like to drink before I go to sleep. Drink a lot of Coffee before I go to sleep, so i can dream faster. I can dream like when they put i camera on a Indy 500, when they put a camera in the car, and it just whipping by like that...dream after dream after dream after dream. People ask me the next day 'what did you dre...am about?' and I say 'i can't..I don't have time, I don't have time to tell you this."
I like it for several reasons. I love coffee, as well as cigarettes, I love black and white films.. It's also a concept that differs very much from most movies, anything original scores higher with me. I also recognize a lot of myself and conversations with others in this movie. And there's a bit of an odd but slightly comfortable atmosphere in it as well.
I love those small brilliants: * * * - Steve! - Steven... - Yes! Steve! * * * - Do you know my mother? (without any relation with conversation line!) * * * Thank you VERY MUCH!!! (all the time) * * * - I gotta go I guess.... - Yes.... - I haven't been for awhile.. (hesitates) - Good. You don't go? * * * Both guys are very strange...One with his "coffee popsicles" and "dream after dream, after dream" and the other with "do you know my mother?". At least he's got free dentist appointment. TYVM!
Americans find it weird :-) That's natural. They are too used to hollywood stuff. Maybe just few people realized that there's no script at all in this scene. Jarmush just switched the camera on and let everything to Benigni and Wright 's bizarre creativity putting the scene inside the movie with no modifications at all. Total improvisation, like a jazz experiment.
not all 'americans' do. (ever go to a US film fest?) you're going by stereotype and the droll h'wood entrees we are regrettably known for. so damn many here who are very talented filmmakers who have to go the indie route (they have to get backers or raise their own funds.) would imagine you must be familiar with that.
Well, all right then. It's good to show their talents (Benigni is obviously a well known actor) and that the actors can cope with such idea but honestly? It's quite pointless. Movies are just like books - they should tell a story, not to be an experiment of some kind :) You can experiment BEFORE doing a released short or movie. You can try to interpret it but it's pointless, because there's probably nothing in it - it's only an experiment ;) But Jarmusch is known to make well-directed movies without too much content. I thought that in the end a waitress will come and say that Steven has to pay for those coffees :) Wouldn't it be much better if this had some sort of a conclusion?
also, the way Roberto laughs when Steven's going off on something that Roberto clearly doesn't understand like the Indy 500 or coffee pops. I've done that so many times in Spanish when I'm getting my haircut , I must sound exactly like this guy
kind of both i guess it would mean more tense though like its all getting to our head and your in a rut and the pressure is building- stressful is perhaps a good word?
it's fun because in the italian version, when benigni goes away, he says "Dentista, che culo!" that means "dentist, stroke of luck!", he says this after the last "ahah", but here he just goes away lol
god, That scene with Iggy Pop and Tom Waits was like being around my dad when I was a kid. He hung out with some strange cats from the village. brrrr. made me wince even at 7.
say what you will, but id rather watch THIS kind of film than ANY of the overblown, violent, noisy, and rudely written movies today ( or last 10 yrs ) its interesting and more like things you CAN see in everyday life, if you really LOOK...
The coffee before bed so he can dream faster is classic Steven Wright.
"Very Good! I don't understand nothing. Yes!"
kaguth lol i need a different past time lol
Pop tv screen
Throughout all my years of watching movies never have I ever found a better dialogue that is so sarcastic on so many levels
🤣
Best movie quote ever!
bro I came here with a full blown overwhelmed depression looking for comfort. THANK you for the upload it calms me thank you
My husband was a Vietnam Veteran. He and his buddies met at the Lodge Coffee House on West Grande BLVD in Detroit. Unable to sleep because of the PTSD, they would while away those night hours with coffee and cigarettes.
I drink a lot of coffee before I go to sleep
so I can dream faster.
Thank you Jim Jarmusch for making such movies.
This film is pure visual JAZZ
.
Visual jazz- love it
That's the weirdest conversation I even seen in my life...So funny!...
That’s mean u don’t have any Italian friends
In 1992 I lived in Rome for a year. I loved Stevie Wonder so my Italian friend made me a cassette tape and labeled it Steve Wonder. Roberto calling Steven Wright "Steve" made me think of my friend Paolo.
Benigni is einfach ein Genie.... unglaublich der Mann....
Benigni said that he couldn't remember any English except for the sentence "Do you know my mother?" so that's what he said. Jarmusch was kinda shocked that he said that as it obviously wasn't scripted (most of this short weren't), but it was so funny he decided to keep it.
Roberto is so fabulously eccentric ! Love it !!
Two comedy legends. Great scene.
Always loved Steven Wright
I first watched this on Netflix streaming on my little 3DS screen. My dad and I had just moved after my mom died, I was a stressed out mess and couldn't sleep. I put this on and for the whole movie, I forgot my problems for a while.
Its good to have some happy moments in life
I know that live is hard but we must live in some normal way :)
this is definitely my favourite conversation from that film
I love this movie! Whenever it's on, I can not stop watching! Its People, just people, and it's Amazing!
It's one of the worst things I've ever seen. Strange Brew and It's Pat may have been better.
there are some songs, that have done good for me, thank 'you for being who streets come a soul who needs its home
I love this movie so much! I reference this scene more often than not and I, too, drink coffee before bed. ☕
Rewatching OG Saturday Night Live on Peacock brought me here. Bizarre, earnest and funny.
Thank you all the good hearted people who help me. My belief in your goodness keeps me alive.
Hope were arent in sodom and gomorah Matrix
I love Roberto! He's one of the best!
I think David Lynch would like this dialogue.
We need a movie where Jim teams up with David
I think David Lynch vomitaría este diálogo...los actores son fantásticos!!
Nicely done by two of my favorite comedic geniuses.
roberto is great as an Actor, he plays with Soul and Passion.
Roberto! One of the greatest! what a Soulfoul amazing Actor!!!
Great to see these guys so young and funny. Love the wall behind them. I am going to recreate it somewhere in my house.
I already have one like this. And the coffee waiting for me on the table.
I watched this in cinema. It was the best scene. Man, 15 years ago…😮
"DO YOU KNOW MY MOTHER?!" hahaha
the do you know my mother impulse makes me blurt out laughing so hard. and I know it's coming every time.
This is the most emotion I've seen Steven Wright exhibit.
When sniffing a coffee cup speaks volumes.
There was a Sun Coast Video near my house that was closing in the early 2000’s. I bought this and Lost in Translation I believe. Best money I ever spent. My introduction to Jim’s movies and so many awesome actors and musicians.
"DO YOU KNOW MY MOTHER" had me rolling on the couch!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This has gotta be one of the best movie scenes ever made! Absolutely fantastic!
The look on Wright's face when he says he doesn't want to go to the dentist and he's staring at the sugar haha.
this and the two Italians scene are my favorite by far.
Great stuff!! The only 2 comedians I’ve ever seen live are Red Skelton & Steven Wright.
Excellent scene !
The art of making something out of little.
Brilliant test of time moment cathartic....Jarmush time capsule gem ;)
I feel lucky. Because I did see this. On big screen back then. I'm in awe of my own experience
"Very good! I don't understand nothing! Yes!"
😂
"Yes! Yes, thank you very much. I ... like to ... sweetch."
Benigni is one of the best !
Perfectly surreal.
i love this so much... i want to have interactions like this
Once you have them u might think differently about it ;)
This sketch had me laughing from 2:07 (when Steven Wright tells Roberto Benigni "I'm wound-up too" with his patented deadpan, monotone delivery) right through to the end. Brilliant writing, and a great pairing.
I loved this movie especially the cast. Better after seeing Jim in Blue in the Face. Great movie too ❤
this is a pretty cool thing, i own the DVD. This is the ultimate chill - movie. Don't miss other movies from Jim Jarmusch!
" I like to drink before I go to sleep. Drink a lot of Coffee before I go to sleep, so i can dream faster. Cute
That is also my favorite part! Will FOREVER!!
Reprised by GZA & JZA talking to Bill Murray in a later vignette.
Brilliant Roberto Benigni.
Woah! this must be the best movie ever produced.
@2:27
"... before I go to sleep, so I can dream faster...!" ;)
@5:21"... The name of the guy..." !?
very strange... I never heard that before... the "dentist" is a Mr./Dr. "Forster"?! o.O ?? ;)
great comedy!!the contrast with characters builds the essence of this movie!
simply a master,genius...
Jim is the man
roberto in an incredible actor

"very good, I don't understand nothing" this is something I should say next time I am talking with English speakers :-)
steve: maybe we should switch?!
roberto: yes, yes thankyou verymuch! I like to switch.
hahaha hilarious!
I love this movie
Great things have been created by people over coffee and cigarettes.
Books, movies, plays, buildings, parks, museums, wars, etc.
Love it❤😊
This one scene is better than the whole fast and furious and avengers franchises combined.
grande robertooooooooooooooooooo. Ciao from Italy
very good, i don't understand nothing...jejejej, fantastico benigni!!!
@parkash911 What? Dude! That's Roberto Benigni!!! Probably the best European comdeian of today! Have you seen Life is Beautiful?
?!??!?
Americans find it weird :-)

LukeInside always looking for conclusions

Where can you find that?
Very strange! :D Still, Steven Wright is BRILLIANT, so I'm soaking up any clip there is! :)
Two Oscar winners.
I love this movie! This was a really funny scene but the Iggy Pop scene is definitely the funniest in the movie!
god,
That scene with Iggy Pop and Tom Waits was like being around my dad when I was a kid.
He hung out with some strange cats from the village. brrrr. made me wince even at 7.
Roberto Benigni is brilliant! Check him out in "Night On Earth".
say what you will, but id rather watch THIS kind of film than ANY of the overblown, violent, noisy, and rudely written movies today ( or last 10 yrs ) its interesting and more like things you CAN see in everyday life, if you really LOOK...
Go back to bed grandpa
