Hello! Tomorrow is my 70th birthday! I have been decluttering seriously for the last couple of years and the enormity and sentimentality of the task is much more than I realized. I did decluttering/cleaning at my daughter's house after she died and cleaned out for my mother and mother-in-law after they passed. For myself personally, it is much harder because of all the memories. Good Luck to all of you cleaning out; don't despair - we can do it!
Hi Kate. I love your videos! Here is my clean out story. My mother was an award winning knitter and I inherited all of her sweaters, scarves and hats. It’s been 9 years since she passed, so I gave myself permission to donate some of her sweaters to my local thrift shop, which I did reluctantly. When sitting in church one Sunday, I saw an elderly lady wearing one of my mom’s beautifully made sweater. I was so happy to actually see it being worn by this dear lady, and was glad that she could use it to keep warm. Good luck with your clean out!
Phone your knickers.......oh my gosh Kate thank you for that. You have caught me off guard and laughing so hard my eyes are tearing. I needed that belly laugh. I just love you Kate!
Thank you for taking us through the ordinary. Not everyday is spinning beautiful yarn or glazing beautiful pots. We enjoy those tremendously ))). ..but you inspire us to do the ordinary as well. Clearing out the not-wonderful is rewarding. It lets us know we are worth beautiful in every aspect of our lives. Our not-wonderful can be someone else's perfect. Permission to let it sit for 6 weeks in the middle of the doing is reassuring that what we do is enough. The really ratty can be transformed into carbon for the garden. I love your choices of music. They are calm even when there is a bit of spice. I am so glad the lime green sofa extends all the way to my house. Hugs on you Lady. )))
Don't beat yourself up, Kate. Listen to your body and take care of yourself. You did quite well with your editing of your wardrobe. That's a real accomplishment. The clothes that fit but not keeping, you could make a memory quilt
My dear Kate, YOU spark joy, even when you don't feel well. I know I don't post much, but whenever doing stuff around the house, I love to take you along and have you talk to me. So around here, between my husband and me, you've gotten the nickname "Come-along-Kate". Thanks for being the lovely human which you are!-
When severe back pain gets me down, oftentimes I will start the video list from the first and listen (I can't watch often due to eye health). Hearing her calming voice is soothing.
My friend recently fought off something, too (not flu or Covid) and her doctor had her take extra iron because your body is working overtime! You keep us inspired, you know, so take care of yourself! I finally got rid of a wonderful desk my daughter wanted me to save but never managed to take with her last week. I could have moved some things around to "make room for it" but I didn't. It felt pretty good knowing someone else is going to need it, especially with so many kids doing school at home. You make me want to go through my closet again (I have done it several times since I retired and still have too much!) and I just wrote it down in my "must do" list for the week!
in one of your videos that i recently watched you had asked us to mention how we found out about you - well i can't believe that i see the item that brought me over to you - its only seen in the beginning clip and the ending clip - well all the way on the right - in the back of your room - there is a window - and on your window you have this opened quilt curtain - from what i understand you can hand it in a doorway or on a window - i don't know what it's called - but my friend Becky watches you - and she made it - and was very proud of how it came out - so she told us about you AND lol - i am sooooooooo happy she did - you are the only one i've been watching all day - every day - for the last several days - you do everything that i love and enjoy - quilting - cooking - pottery - baking - making things lol - i am so glad to know you!!!
Great to see you Kate. Here's an idea for you. Take that lovely tunic you made off the body form and hang it in your blue section (even if it isnt hemmed), THEN, choose your absolute favourite non-fitting joy sparker from the pile and drape THAT on the body form. Tah Dah, a bit of joy every time you enter the room. Lose the rest, since there is SO much more joy to come. Take it slow and easy mate xxx
Hi Kate, so glad you feel you have returned a corner and have a little more energy, the danger is trying to cram everything into that small window of energy and crashing, the aftermath of overdoing any fatigue syndrome is depressing as you are then having to rest and watching things pile up again and back where you started. It’s a bit like learning to walk again, baby steps. So glad you feel that you can vlog again, it’s lovely to have you back! I have been watching a newer channel to the crafting, knitting, sewing and crochet world of RUclips and i think you will enjoy her podcasts as she is relaxing to watch and unintentionally funny, and reminds me a bit of Alan Bennett’s talking heads series, but she is unscripted of course. You may have already found her channel, it’s “Stitched by Mrs D” and her name is Paula. Take care of yourself Kate and remember, baby steps lol X
There is a lovely woman in Australia called Evelyn Wood. She is a seamstress and a keen opponent of "fast fashion". She teaches sewing and refashioning of garments. Last year she started something called Monday mending. Every Monday, we chose something out of our mend pile and deal with it. Of course, you could do more if you wanted, but just knowing every Monday I will fix one thing has been just the little boost I needed to actually conquer some mending. I did what you are doing earlier this year. My closet contents shrunk down more than 50%. It was wonderful. Even if it was something I loved, if I wasn't able to wear it, I focused on moving it along to the charity shop so somebody else could love it. I am glad you are feeling better, and shall hold you in thought and prayer for a complete recovery.
Just now watched your video on down sizing. I have spent the whole Summer cleaning out the basement after living here 60 years. It's been exhausting ! Now I need to tackle the main living area. It's hard letting go of things. I am a perfectionist and parents saved everything as they went thru the depression. Kate is a delight to listen to her U-Tubes.
Your video isn boring, Kate, because YOU’RE not boring. If five minutes a day is all you can put to the task, that’s a start. Set a timer. Get done what you can in five minutes, and then rest. Then put in another five minutes again tomorrow. I read a book called A YEAR TO CLEAR by Stephanie Bennett (or Stephanie Vogt Bennett) which you might enjoy and which might be helpful. It addresses all sorts of emotional/psychological issues behind our *collections* of things, especially for us crafting folks and hobbyists, but not in a heavy-handed way. Most of the chapters are only 1 or 2 pages long. It really helped me focus and prepare to move out of state several years ago. God bless you on this journey. 💞 May your health continue to improve. 🌸💐
WE moved out of our home for 13 months several years ago to do a big renovation on our house, we only took what we needed for six months (that is how long we thought we would be out of the house). It was surprising how happy we were with none of our 'treasures' about. Since back I have had a big sort out and given away or sold many things. I now have a yearly routine where I give myself a month to tidy one room and remove that which I haven't used or don't need. I have a couple of empty drawers from the last tidy in the lounge!! I am a crafter so still need to keep stuff for knitting, quilting sewing etc. Love your Vlogs, so while you get better I revisit your older Vlogs. Take care, with love.
This has so many reverberations for me, I can sympathise with your lack of energy. I suffer with fibromyalgia and often have periods of exhaustion and it becomes so frustrating when you can’t do what you want. You have to slow down and pace yourself. Long hard days like driving down to your dad’s and back you will find very draining. I have the same problem with junk - it’s finding the energy that’s the problem definitely a case of the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Just take your time and you’ll get there. Take care, big gentle hugs, pace yourself and don’t overdo things
I get the energy (lack thereof) and fibro thing. I say what is most important to do today. Sometimes I get to it sometimes I do not. I don't worry about it.
I enjoyed this video, because we all must face the beasts in our home that Rob of of our joy and energy. I too am ill at this time the desire is there but the spirit is weak. I did start my 1st crib quilt last night at class. The top is cut, one complete square is sewn, and the rest pinned and ready for sewing. I felt accomplished in that. The baby shower is April 10th so less than a month away. It's a simple 9 patch x 6. Unicorn's. I'm happy I have finally done it, attempting to learn, as I started this endeavor in 1975 Kate! How time gets away. Glad you're starting to feel better in this video.
I have been working on that for years. It intensified about 9 years ago, when we ended up having to start clearing out my parents home. I try not to acquire anything, unless I really need it, now. Your storage area is not bad at all. It is nowhere what we had to clear, which took us almost 5 years. After working on their house each time, I'd come home and want to clear out unused items at home. When I am recovering, I like to sort, and purge, since it keeps me from thinking about what I was feeling like. Even one little drawer, one box, one shelf is something. Then I'll read, or maybe stitch, or watch videos..
"Hello, is that my nickers?" = we erupted with laughter! So glad to see that you again. Do hope that your return to good health is slow and steady. Baby steps hey :)
The word tights is so perfect. These days the tights are made so that the waistband doesn't cut you in half but my memory from the 70s tells me that all tights cut you in half and I put off wearing them even though I need them and have several dresses I love. tights tights tights tights.... I need to start calling them another name. I've had to do many purges over the year but I'm impressed with 15!
Morning Kate, so good to see you back again, don’t push yourself to hard, take it easy, know offence but we aren’t getting any younger I’m (73), 🙈 so know what I’m talking about, when we get ill it takes our body a little longer to get back on our feet, so you take it easy, and take good care of yourself, it’s just great for all of us to see you back again, blessings from Scotland
I really like the way you work on the big projects…steadily or when it suits you, and you do finish! Agnes has the love of 100k+ people in that beautiful quilt! She is well loved.❤
Today is the first day that I watched your RUclips presentations. I live in Michigan in the lower peninsula on the very very tip of the mitten. I am 77 years old. I have absolutely BingeWatch today I love your program your presentation your house your activities your talents your garden all of it I have been watching everything randomly I have nothing in order. You are so amazing I just love
Kate, all I can see is some nice material, ready for a memory quilt! Nice to cut up, but still have! I did this when my husband died, using his shirts and buying suitable fabric to coordinate. It kept me busy in dark days for a long time, good luck All love, Kris
That was my thought exactly! Just cut a square or two out and then slowly stitch them together when you have a minute or two to make a nice quilt that will "spark joy" because you really liked the garments. In the end, you will have a very special quilt just for you. And, boy do I really need to do what you did. I actually do have a couple bags of things to be donated but in the covid environment, there haven't been places accepting donations. I just received an email today that one charity is beginning pick ups so I need to be brave like you and make a pile of the rest of the stuff in my closet and make some more donation bags.
When I purge, I try to think how happy someone else will be to be able to find this at their local thrift store. I know, if I kept stuff and cut it up I would just end up with more stuff I would eventually need to get rid of. So out the first time!! Wipe my hands of the mess!!
I have so much stuff, I bought all kinds of crafts when I was working to have when I retired, you can over 80 years accumulate, but I don’t consider myself a hoarder. I rented a small booth at a collectible shop and have put in all my downsizing things and for the last 6 years kept it stocked. Last year was a challenge with COVID. In 2019 I had the virus and hospitalized awhile and it took me a year and am finally feeling better. Hope you are feeling well. So enjoy our visits
You’ll like this...... keep your unwanted tights for when you render your beeswax. We put all the manky wax from old frames into a pop sock/cut off tights, tie a knot in the top and suspend it on a stick over an old jug (we have one specially for this task), put it in a warm oven to melt, just over 64 degrees C. The clean wax will drip through. We pour the melted wax into a takeaway container and, hey presto, you have an ingot of lovely clean wax. The tights and manky bits can just be thrown away. We can trade the ingot for new foundation wax at our local bee supplier shop. 🐝😘
brilliant! step by step is the way to go. I have been doing this, don't rush. I have a list, jobs most needing doing at the top. one job a day is important,, no more, too exhausting. you have less overwhelmingly down days. you won't get to the end if you keep wiping yourself out. I has taken me 10 months but all sorted now. just one job a day. miss you but only want you back when you are well and strong Sylvia xx
Kate, I have what you have exactly. In bed watching this video cos I'm so sick. Not Covid, I was just tested. My thoughts on memory clothes...Cut off pieces and make cushion covers, book covers even a tote or storage bag. Just fast, easy organic none perfect. So many old outdated clothes don't sell at charity shops and go for scrap even if they aren't even worn. Then you can Spark joy as you sew. Hope were both better soon. 9 weeks sick for me so far. Hugs Kate in New York. 😍
If you're like me the socks are still on the bed... Hopefully you have a spare ;) Great work getting the clothing items down to 15! This is definitely NOT a boring "conversation"! I find your perspective very helpful. Not all approaches to clutter work for everyone. Factoring in emotions, attachments and the potential burn-out looming are part of the process, indeed. Observing yours helps put me in the mode to tackle mine with a balance of persistence and patience. Chipping away at it! Ebbing and flowing, as we must!
Hello Kate, while I ,a am decluttering my big house, I started by the open floor plan areas, as in case somebody visits, it is more presentable. I am now also going through old albums from which some photos were out of them. I have envelopes per year for the photos around in boxes and again other envelopes. Then I write down per album the year and places in a notebook. Sort envelopes by decade and slowly but surely the photos are going back to where they belong.I also stick a paper tape in the back with the year and have the albums per year in my book case. Easy to find a year. I watch your videos while doing this at my desk. Enjoy your day. USA.
I watched that young lady too, it really worked for me big time. I emptied my home, the most blissful thing ive ever done. Ps my knicker drawer is the talk of my family. Sooo tidy ❤
I see a Delft ware quilt in that blue collection Kate.😂 There’s a children’s story book called My Grandma’s Quilt. The story is about a patchwork quilt where each patch holds a fond memory of something. I am a new subscriber and so didn’t realise you have been unwell. I must just mention that both Arne and Carlos both got COVID but Arne originally tested negative although a later test proved positive. Your decluttering can surely wait a while until you feel stronger. I hope you feel better soon. XAngela
Those darned brick walls are popping up everywhere, Kate. This was so inspirational to me as I have experienced the very same 'syndrome' this past year and everything just exhausts me to even think of it - not our normal behaviour, is it. I too, will persevere and try to deal with just one thing at a time. Thank you.
You can bet that many of us who have just watched this video can relate. Fun to see that you are saying things like "doesn't fit but still like" and so on. Really enjoyed this video, made me chuckle a couple of times.
Recently moved from a three story house to a 736 sq ft cabin in the woods. No closets. I have a small wardrobe so purging was a must. I truly understand the emotional task this is. I do feel very good now that it is done and dressing in the morning is so stress free! Love your videos and hope your health will continue to improve. Love and blessings from the USA.
I’m here now to be back with you, Kate! I feel I’m here with you and am careful who you - I live in Florida but I use to lived and started quilting, Massachusetts- hope you are better and good and I love seeing you every day- 🥰Sandra Myer🐈
Don't ever feel bad about slow progress especially with the task you're into Kate. I've done this many times over the years when I was well and also when I've been just tired. We don't realise it but this is emotionally draining and consequently physically draining. Do what you can. Just stick to the goal in your own time.
If you are thinking of' tidying up' the cats... point them in my direction . x The way I get rid of stuff when I'm in a get rid mood is... I go to each room pick one thing that I haven't used for months ( years!).. and put it in the Charity shop or freecycle.. 5 rooms = 5 things less ( usually more than 5 if I'm on a roll ) ... plus If I get something new, something old has to go out.. otherwise I would be the hoarder next door... but there's always room for a recycled cat or two.... Chins up, you may hopefully start to feel better now the weather has cooled...
Was NOT boring. Not sure why it's interesting watching people tidy up, but it is. I also Marie Kondoed my closet twice since I retired two years ago and need to go at it again. I think the concept that helped me the most was not deciding what to get rid of but deciding what to keep. Don't remember if that came from the Netflix series or the book. Anyway. Be well and no need to reply. Know you have a lot of fans.
Hello, this is your knickers! Come find me, I'm in the trunk with the laundry you forgot to bring in. Hello, this is your knickers makes complete sense to me. And no perfectly rolled and folded socks and T-shirts. Having a clear path through rooms is a good goal. I just purchased 2 gorgeous quilts, one large and one smaller, at the Quilt Shop which is going out of business down the block. I am so proud...of whoever actually put all those blocks together so beautifully. I told the owner I'd bought most of the fabrics that the quilts are made of, but somehow they have not made themselves into quilts yet so I bought these sample quilts and I'm taking credit for that very good idea. If you love a piece of clothing for its colors or textures, but aren't going to wear it, just hang it on the wall as "fabric art." You wanted it for some reason so repurpose it and keep it if it "sparks joy." Make scarves out of bigger pieces? This must be why I don't get rid of much?
Oh Kate...you really have no clothing dramas..my daughter has 42 coats... so you can imagine just how many actual clothes she has...tones & tones..if I had to compare what was on your bed, times that by atleast 5! And shoes 🤦♀️.. nightmare! I'm going to look for that lady and forward it to my daughter & hopefully it will spark some inspiration for her to get rid of at least 3/4 of it.. Your looking much brighter & it's lovely to see you back, I look often to see if you have posted & was delighted to see you had 😊.. hope to see you when your 100%!! Take care.
At 20:52 you said the word that I always say to myself when cleaning out my clothes closet: Ruthless. I just take that as my mantra and the two year rule - if you haven't worn it in two years, you probably won't wear it again. Just be ruthless, Amy. I guess it's just a way for me to get honest with myself and really do the task at hand. Now the real challenge is to be honest about the new things I bring in!
Congrats on the progress you made sorting - we don’t always give ourselves credit for the exhausting decision-making process. You have done well with specific categories, and are well on your way! A delightful video!
I have been very sick also. Actually since February, some days with zero energy. My doctor was convinced my results were a false negative. I had not decluttered in 30 years and I had a resell business and enough sewing and craft supplies to open my own store. I started decluttering so my kids wouldnt have to clear out my mess. The trick to getting rid of stuff for me, was finding a place to donate where I knew it would truly be appreciated. At first the sparking joy thing elluded me, but after I did it a while, I knew exactly what it meant and it made it easier for me to let go of things. I have donated five or six vanfuls so far and havent skimmed the surface. It has been a very slow go because energy is a huge issue. Some days, I may only clean a small drawer or bin, but it all adds up. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Rest up! Some things take ages before you regain your full energy. I had Stage 4 rectal cancer - in Sept I have a acan and if it is clear, if will be 26 months clear after 3 years of fighting. I have lots of great days, but then will totally crash for a bit. I call it my new normal. The funny story on how I got rid of many clothes...I was afraid my sister would bring them to me to wear in the hospital! Then I realized I needed new slippers and a robe. Now I have decided that since I have not gained much weight in 2 years, my totes of clothes before I got sick can go to my church thrift store...they are open again! I figure if I keep them, they probably will dry rot before they fit me again. I agree, it is a difficult process. Rome wasn't built in a day - you didn't get it all in a day and you won't get rid of it all in a day. But bag by bag...it will make a difference and you will see clear spots. Even better...when you look at your clothes - it all will be clothes that fit you and that you like. Nut go at your own pace. You have that wonderful, extra bed to sort things, so that is perfect! Feel better. Be patient...healing takes more time than people realize. Oh, and I have a sister that gets a sinus infection every year at the end of summer...some plant must bloom. She doesn't see many people either, but that pollen finds her.
It's been said that if you don't use it in a years time you don't need it🤷 I don't know and I am 67 yrs old with clutter as well. Funny I watched this video because I have been sorting my fabric and re-folding it to organize it's cupboard. I thought I would destash more than I did. I think as we get older it is much harder to let things go. I hope you feel better soon. My husband and I did have Covid this past July. It was awful but no hospital thankfully. I have some lingering side effects though. I hope that sorts itself out soon. Dr says it will take time. I spent this last summer buying a lot of new fabric since I haven't quilted in over 10 yrs. We had a terrible wildfire scare almost had to evacuate. My Juki and fabric were what I packed along with a few clothes. I got the sewing bug again and can't wait to get on with it as soon as I get things in my sewing area put back together without the cobwebs haha! 😊🙋🦋
Agnes's quilt looks like Monet's Watergarden ...lovely. Hope your energy starts to come back I had something similar and lasted 10 weeks...no fun. So glad you are doing what your body needs a day at a time.
Yay!! So glad to see you again. Kudos to you for not succumbing to being totally "Kondo-ized"!!! I admire your independent thinking and realization that de-cluttering is more an emotional process than simple re-organization.
Go gently with yourself Kate. I understand the desire to remove stuff from cluttering your life while also holding it in your heart. I have just done the hardest declutter. I resigned from my paid employment. It's scary but good. Time to tackle everything else now.
Since I haven't been able to go out shopping, and I don't want to online shop for clothes, and because my favorite dress shop closed down, I've been utilizing and appreciating my clothes even more. I have one closet for summer things and one for winter, and each season, I get to discover my lovely things all over again.
Oh your video sprang such joy with me. I too am attempting to Kon-Marie my home. One thing Im finding most useful is the practice of putting like with like. I now have a category of clothes called, "Well that's one for the wardrobe". (i.e. not on my back). It does help when I'm shopping though to ask myself, " is this to wear or to hoard?" Some of my dress fabric and fat quarters have become so precious I can't use them.🤔 Ha ha ha. You've just mentioned having clothes that need alteration! And tights! I must own 100 pairs still in their boxes from when Woolworths closed down. Oh dear 😂 Letting go is exhausting and overwhelming, especially if all our treasured possessions hold a story of love. Take care, wishing you well.🌻🌈🌤️
Listening to you going through this issue feels like you have a window into my life! I'm struggling with this issue now, needing to rethink and decide on how to declutter for the first time in over 30 years.....It's tiring, yet making space that's refreshing. As I continue, room by room, knowing you're doing the same, my tasks will feel lighter. So glad to see and hear from you again. Love to you in all your endeavors ❤
You are so much like me when it comes to clothing. I love colorful, bohemian clothing. Tunics, long skirts. So occasionally I buy something like that, occasionally new, but more likely from the thrift store. I think it would be so much fun to wear, but then don't have the courage to wear it. I think I like to blend into the crowd. So those two things don't go together. So my closet is full of things I don't wear. I do occasionally get rid of some things, but like you, I think I wear the same few outfits over and over. In winter it's flannel shirts and yoga pants. (Unless I'm going to town, when I change into jeans, lol.) In summer it's tank tops and capris. I also seem to feel under the weather a lot, but not REALLY sick. :) Take care!
A friend of mine, over dinner this evening, told me about you and your videos. Your videos kept her going and sane during nights of intense pain before and after a hip replacement a few weeks ago that was originally scheduled for 4 days after lock down. She just loves your videos and after watching one this evening after coming home from dinner with her and her husband, I am so inspired by you. I have just watched the one about decluttering. Well, that is something I have to do, sooner rather than later. But its the wonderful natural way you are in front of the camera, no airs and graces, just you being you. As my friend said this evening, it's like we are in the room with you. Many thanks and I look forward to watching more of your videos. I really hope you are feeling better. Really best regards. Alison x
I keep checking to see if Kate is back, so I was thrilled to see your face. I miss seeing your regular videos. For your sake (and mine) I hope your energy grows each day and you get to feeling good again. Maybe this series will inspire me to clean out my house too.
Hello Kate, two suggestions for you: First, if you haven't already, box/bag up the charity shop items and give them away. The sense of accomplishment is exhilarating, and you've got a big empty space in the room. Second take the ones you love but don't fit and make a two sided quilt. My grandmother was a professional seamstress. She used small pieces of all types of fibers and fabrics to make a tied quilt. I think every piece was a different shape. I slept under that quilt until I graduated from college.
Good job kate. It’s hard to let go of THINGS. It is for me. The English paper piecing quilt is really coming along and I love the colors. Just take your time and try not to overtire. Love brenda😘
Hi Kate, I'm happy you are on the mend. WOW was this timely. I have been wanting to go through the clothes for a long time and just can't face it - mostly because there is nothing wrong with the clothes other than they don't fit hahaha (but not really funny). Anyway I made a start today and I emptied the shelving part of my wardrobe cleaned it all down and placed things back that I wanted and still fit. Then I tackled the stuff on hangers. Some was so hard to give up, but the reality is when will I ever get back to that size again. I have kept hoping and hoping but all that seems to happen is more weight. I didn't get through it all today, I couldn't face trying some of the things on so I was kind to myself and stopped and I've given myself permission to take comfort in that I got a start. Take care Kate and everyone here on the sofa!
I'm two videos behind - something that hasn't happened since I started watching (the first Hercules Candies video). As I've said before, I've limited screen time for eye health reasons... but gosh I've missed you! Glad you're healing; continue to take care of yourself please. Love you!
Keep at it kate, you know best about your recovery. You are inspiring me to "EDIT" my house. At 75 it has become time, or perhaps past time. 1 Sept., 60 years antique dealer, 47 years making ( sometimes selling), quilts, knitting since i was 4 yrs., 12 years rug hooking, a avid reader. That explains the enormous clear out I'm facing. You keep at it and gode me on, please. Best wishes, good health, great life.
Hope you are feeling better! Swedish death cleaning is the method I now use when organizing/decluttering, especially after family deaths and what the living have to work through. Maybe it’s something that would also resonate with you. It’s not as morbid as you think. Actually it’s a way to freedom, for you and your family. As for items I am especially attached to but need to let go, I take a picture! Also, Australian organizer Peter Walsh gives excellent advice and insight into why we accumulate/keep stuff and how to finally let go. All the best!
Kate, it's wonderful to see you back and looking so cheery and bright. Don't overdo. Everything will wait for you. i and all your other friends on the lime green sofa want you to be feeling fit and strong.
It's easier to let go of items that don't bring you joy anymore, when you consider how much joy it may give someone else. We as seniors have started room by room getting rid of things, don't want to imagine our sons having to spend endless hours and stress sorting through. I've now gone through my painting, sewing, tarot, reading etc room. I have made queen sized quilts , love doing them. We don't have many fabric shops here in Ontario now and certainly not close to where I live. So I stopped making them.
I have dropped the ball many time because of illness, some time you get back at it later. Never feel guilty life is just a journey to learn from. We love you and have learned much from your sharing and my life is richer for your kindness.
Lovely to see you again. O know what you mean about feeling overwhelmed with clothes etc. I live with my husband of 53 years,. My son, daughter and granddaughter lives with us too. We have a four bedroom house that is packed to the rafters. Clothes, clothes and more clothes. If they aren't in the wash basket, they are I the washing machine or on the washing line or in the ironing basket! Their warobe's are full,. Shoes are everywhere yet they buy more stuff. I totally overwhelmed and in despair. My granddaughter is due to move to live with her brother in Tenerife. At least the washing basket may not be as full. Sorry for the moan. Take care love to all your family. Xx
Hi, Kate! So good to see you. The nice thing about decluttering or whatever you choose to call it, is that it all waits patiently for you to be ready! My purpose in decluttering is to reduce what I have in preparation for moving. I moved to where I live now 39 years ago when I married. After all these years, it's my turn to have him uproot his life and move to where I want to be, which is right back in my hometown of Dallas, Texas! But if anyone thinks I'm moving 39 years worth of stuff, they have got another think coming!! Best wishes to you, Kate! Be well!!!
Glad to see you starting to resurface and making me laugh out loud with phoning your knickers and 'boring' tights. One of the things I struggle with when clearing out clothes is the desire to save the items simply for the fabric, due to my upbringing I think. If the fabric is no good then maybe the buttons or the zip? I have boxes of such things that I have kept as it maybe useful 'one day' and, like you said, that day is just not going to happen. I still have my Mums button tin with all the buttons that she rescued. I have been trying to be ruthless and now have bags of stuff but all the charity shops are still closed.
Hooray your back missed you and the cats 🌹please take care stop worrying about your lack of energy it’s part and parcel of what was wrong with you where I live loads of people started off with the cold when it didn’t clear up they then said oh it’s the flu when that didn’t clear up oh we think it’s pneumonia when that didn’t clear they were sent to the hospital for x-rays that was in October last year through to January this year and believe it or not some are still very weak and they don’t know what they had at first I thought it was hooping cough because I had it 8 years ago and it took me months to recover my husband ended up in hospital with it we both have had problems with our chest ever since so just rest as much as you can xx
Kate, your video is truly inspirational, but in ways that you don’t really know. Getting rid of things are usually not really easy for many reasons and for many of us. But it should not stress one out. Take your time, tomorrow is always going to arrive and you may feel differently about things. De cluttering is like life... take it one day at a time. Organizing is in the same category, too. Be well, take care and stay safe. ❤️ many blessings.
You look so much better than that video. I wish you well. Agnes's quilt is beautiful. I too have gone through my closet and have made a pile of give away. Have a lovely week. Here in southern California, we would love to have a little of your weather.
I must have been tired because I couldn’t stop laughing when you called your nickers. It was so nice to hear your voice but be careful and continue to rest all you need. Of course now I’m motivated to go through my closet and apply your theory of what to keep or pass on. We recently began de-cluttering big items and my craft room in anticipation of selling our house to downsize and I can honestly say I don’t miss the stuff except a few crafty things which are in temporary storage. Blessings.
Comfortable kicking back on the big green couch watching your fight with energy levels ... really identifying ........take care see you again soon 😷🌍👍🇦🇺☕️
Kate it like me I went into my craftroom last Monday pulled everything out put my book shelving into my bedroom then went into the living room tipped all my boxes out and went through them all that part all done now I gave craft stuff to my granddaughters while they are in lockdown my daughters are classroom assistants so will have a lot of fun making things xx 😘
“Pandemic de cluttering “ Because of lockdown many have had time to look at at stuff in their homes & hopefully de clutter Reality check for me was if anything should happen ! My lads will have such a mess to sort WELL I started on drawers & cabinet of paperwork really cathartic burning in my small incinerator masses of old papers 👍 I half sorted some clothes so next big project will be your method all on a bed & be realistic of fit & need Thank you Kate Ps: glad to hear your being sensible on listening to your body & taking it all at a slower pace Virtual hug 🤗
It's not boring for us because it's not our stuff. I worry about how tired you have been. There aren't many illnesses that will do that to someone for such a length of time. Mononucleosis is one and maybe a heart ailment? Whatever it is or was, please recover to your 100% soon. You are one of the good ones my dear and everyone wants you to feel better!
We retired and moved from a four-bedroom, three-bath house with a double garage, full basement, and two outbuildings to a two-bedroom mobile home with a very small garage. It was difficult but freeing. I look at everything I bring into our home and give a good think about if I really need it. Most times I don’t.
Many Blessings....I learned a bit of a guideline where clothes and things are concerned from my aunt who always seemed to have a “Tidy” home...she once said to me... “If I don’t use something in a year to a year and half... I get rid of it. If I needed it or liked that much I would have used it within that time” ...and oh has that helped me! We have four Seasons here in the NW US so I’ve always had a problem thinking maybe I’ll need it next season but what she said cover all seasons and made so much sense.
I followed Marie's system with the clothing as well and went from two closets full, down to one. I keep picking away at the closet and one advantage of COVID is that I am not shopping for clothing at all, not that I need any because I am retired. I'm making room in there for my grandson's toys and clothing for his visits. Do take care, Kate. Your eyes, when you first became ill, had the same appearance as my husband's did after his stroke - a murky, glassy sense. Perhaps that's just a general unwell thing, but rest all you need. We'll be here paitently waiting for your visits. TFS the inspiration!
My first time watching. You are delightful to listen to. I am glad you are feeling better. I thought I would do some cleaning out as well. After I started it dawned on me that where I live here int the States everything was closed and even though they were still taking items you had to leave them next to a bin on the ground. I couldn't quite to that. What if a dog were to come along and wee on my things? Not happening! Funny how we get attached to things. I suspect it's the memories and not the things themselves. Best wishes from for a full recovery and your project.
So happy to see you this Sunday morning Kate. Yes you can tell you were still sick when you made that video sorting clothes. I totally understand the fatigue as I deal with that constantly and literally have to push myself to do anything anymore. I have fibromyalgia which causes a lot of the fatigue but also my pain issues drain me. I thought your hair looked great in that clip.. I. Still have not gotten mine cut. Sure needs it. Good thing I'd gotten it done very short just before the shut down here. Miss seeing your videos but wanting good health for you. Just don't do like me and add a bad fall to your issues. Oh yes I fell this past Wednesday in my living room. No real reason just bam and I was down. Still dealing with the soreness of it. God bless you dear lady and all those on the Lime Green Sofa. See. Ya soon
Hello Kate, I've just discovered your wonderful channel. It's so odd but I've had exactly the same experience happen to me. I recently decided to declutter my overstuffed house, full of wonderful, creative, crafty things that I would use "some day" I too came down with this mystery illness that the doctor thought was the dreaded lurgy. And like you I got a negative result. That was six weeks ago and I'm only just recovering. I spent 21 days in all, in self isolation from my family, which I spent sleeping in my sewing/ guest room and have got rid of things that have been awaiting there "useful" day for several decades. It's been a surreal few weeks that I'm glad are coming to an end, fingers crossed. Like you my energy is still very lacking but I am slowly plodding on. And the house is definitely feeling lighter and so do I. I'm so happy to have found your wonderful creative world. Like you I have Many diverse creative interests. Nice to meet you Kate. From Annie xx
I recently did this with all of my clothing, and holy cow, did I get rid of boxes and boxes and boxes of old clothing. I had boxes of clothing I hadn't fit in for more than 10 years, and I donated 90% of it. Though I kept all the jeans because I'm a HUGE fan of making things with old jeans. I also saved a few tshirts to put into a quilt, from particular events. One thing I thought of for you, because you have kids, and a sweet little grand baby, where I don't, lol...is using the fabric from clothing that they remember you wearing when they were growing up, if they have particular memories associated with them. and making a scrappy quilt of them? One thing that I did with both of my Gram's clothing, was set things aside that we had very distinct memories of, and I will use that to make a memory quilt either later this year or early next year. Just a thought from a granddaughter/daughter perspective. I'm always catching my Mom tossing things I would want her to keep because I have specific memories associated with them, lol. We have an agreement now, so she sends me funny videos, snarkily asking me about specific things and whether I want them or not, lol. Thank you for sharing your journey with us! I had very similar piles of indecision on items that were a tad small or a tad large etc when I did this, so it's comforting to me to see that I'm not the only one! Hehe. And you will get back to it when you are full and completely well again! Until then, rest up and snuggle those sweet kitties. =)
Kate - I have a stack of old jeans - mine and my now 30 yo daughter's - that I want to use to make a quilt. I don't want it to be fancy, more of a "working quilt" - ex: use outside on a picnic, etc. If you or any viewers have any suggestions I'd love to hear them. So nice to have you back in any capacity. I now feel a little more inspired to continue to my down sizing :)
where did you find a shop to donate to? all ours are closed or not accepting. I's started and gotten bags and boxes of clothes and goods and they're still here, cluttering up my rooms!
@@toodie535 Very VERY fortunately timed, where my parents live in Sacramento, CA, shops were accepting donations again for about 2 weeks before they had to close up again. If not for that brief reprieve, I would STILL have a living room FULL of boxes. Short story long...lol...My Gram passed 2 years ago, and I'd requested her clothing from my Aunt so that I could make keepsake memory quilts or bears for the family. At the same time that Gram was in the hospital, my husband was trying to die on me with a mass of pulmonary emboli in his lungs! (We can joke about this now, but it was intense at the time of course!) I wasn't able to help with cleaning out Gram's house as much as I would have liked, so as things were boxed up for me, they just came to the house and got stacked up, literally floor to ceiling in my living room, in front of a bookcase. It was INSANE. So for 2 years, they sat, for various and assorted but valid reasons, lol, also very inconveniently, blocking half the room. Earlier this year, at the beginning of Covid times, Mom and I were finally able to go through all of those boxes, and donate things that needed donating, and save things that needed saving, FINALLY giving space enough for us to use the living room again, and do super cool things like...actually sit on the couch, and actually be able to see each other on either end of the couch...lol. So, again, short story long, lol...I can DEEPLY DEEPLY relate to the frustration of boxes and BOXES of things cluttering up your rooms, and I hope that you are able to get them donated very soon, to free up space for you as well!
Any conversation we have with you isn't silly. I for one have missed you and I can only wish you well and get better soon!! That's quite the chore you have there but Marie Condo is supposed to be the best. What do you mean you don't call your knickers???? I call mine all the time. Gets kind of lonely around here so it's either call my knickers or the wall. Do you remember the movie "Shirley Valentine"??? "Hello, Wall" LOLOL I LOVED that movie and if I could find it, I'd be watching it often. Wow, did I get off topic! Anyway, so glad you making progress with feeling better. Please don't overdo it. There are folks out here who love you,, Kate. Virtual hugs from Canada
Loving Agnes’s quilt, the colours are gorgeous. Whatever you had certainly did knock the stuffing out of you, but there is no need to rush, we women always want to get things done in a hurry, take your time and listen to your body, and rest up when you feel the need. That way you won’t regret throwing out something you really didn’t want to. Hugs x
I know you prefer the short hair... but your longer hair is truly beautiful... Great to see you pop up on RUclips today... I'm glad you have the will power to take the time you need to get well... I have a quote on my home screen that says... **Keep Taking Time for Yourself Until You Are You Again**
If there is a way to be alerted of your new blog posts, I would love it. Thanks for reminding me I want to declutter ... life always diverts me onto other things, but it's important. Thanks, love ... take good care. 😻😻😻
I work in the medical field Kate, have them check your heart also, some conditions can present as fatigue. Hope you feel better soon, summer is such the busy time with the yard and garden. Take care.
I decided I was not leaving a mess for my kids! Once someone passes and leaves you the job of clearing, it’s horrible. I did my clothes and if it was worn out it went out. The hardest was doing my sewing room all bought with good intention. Lol It’s so good to see you declutter.
I found the " spark joy" thing wasn't enough for my decluttering. I ended up identifying what the "container" is for whatever category I was working on and asked myself the question, "what will I keep?". That really helped the process along.
Love the quilt. After watching you I had to sit down and have a glass of ice water. It's hot here and humid. I am wishing for cooler weather but won't be for awhile. Keep on resting and I will keep you in my prayers.
So glad to see you! I just recently found you in the last couple of months, so have been watching some of your older videos. I truly enjoy them. I'm suppose to be doing 'something' around the house right now, but had to sit down and watch your video. That is great you are sorting thru your stuff. My father-in-law passed away last year and we moved our mother-in-law to a senior apartment community (she's 87 and doesn't drive). We spent many weekends sorting thru their belongings in their house which they lived in for over 60 years. BUT easier said than done, I have a hard time parting with my stuff especially my craft items, but am trying to do better! :) Take it slow and take care! Hugs from Illinois!
Happy 71st birthday to you!
Amy Adkins I so agree!!
Agnes’ quilt has a touch of Monet Water Lilies about it from a distance
Be an essentialist, keep what you need and love and toss the rest, but keep what is essential to Kate for Kate to be happy and healthy
Dear Kate I’m sure you can tell by the many comments we have missed you terribly. Continue getting better and take care.
Hugs from the USA.
So glad you’re finding your way back. We miss you, but do be careful and don’t overdo!
Wendy Kemp England 😂
Made me laugh too - so good to see Kate laughing again even if it was pre-recorded.
It kept me busy in dark days for a long time, good luck
All love, Kris
kris morris that’s a great idea 👍
kris: I think that’s a wonderful idea! As you said it helped you to reflect, cherish, heal and mend your heart and soul🥰 Gods blessings❤️😀
I have clean out my clothes and any cotton shirt I cut up for fabric scraps. Then when a make a quilt for family they have a part of me in it.
I was thinking of this while watching her pile the clothes up.
What an AWESOME way to reuse those tights!!!
brilliant! step by step is the way to go.
My thoughts on memory clothes...Cut off pieces and
make cushion covers, book covers even a tote or storage bag.
Agnes' quilt is really coming along, it's really beautiful.
Thank you.
Kate, I am so so glad you're feeling better. I really missed you.
I'm a nurse, in South Africa. Doing the terrible swabs for the Covid.
Love Lindi.
Thank you !I very much appreciate your work!
Stay safe, Lindi! *HUGS*
Stay well, Lindi! 💙
It does help when I'm shopping though to ask myself, " is this to wear or to hoard?" Some of my dress fabric and fat quarters have become so precious I can't use them.🤔
Ha ha ha.
You are the original self-isolater and I'm one of your copies. I really enjoyed this video. So funny! .
“Pandemic de cluttering “
Because of lockdown many have had time to look at at stuff in their homes & hopefully de clutter
Reality check for me was if anything should happen ! My lads will have such a mess to sort WELL I started on drawers & cabinet of paperwork really cathartic burning in my small incinerator masses of old papers 👍
I half sorted some clothes so next big project will be your method all on a bed & be realistic of fit & need
Thank you Kate
Ps: glad to hear your being sensible on listening to your body & taking it all at a slower pace
Virtual hug 🤗
So glad you are back..missed the lime green couch and your cheerful chatter and informational moments

I have missed you Kate.
So happy to see you again
Connie🐝
Take care.
Kate, your hair is wonderful this length, enormously flattering.
I decided I was not leaving a mess for my kids!
Once someone passes and leaves you the job of clearing, it’s horrible.
I did my clothes and if it was worn out it went out.
The hardest was doing my sewing room all bought with good intention. Lol
It’s so good to see you declutter.
I found the " spark joy" thing wasn't enough for my decluttering. I ended up identifying what the "container" is for whatever category I was working on and asked myself the question, "what will I keep?". That really helped the process along.
Now that’s another school of thought ❤️😀
That's the idea with "decluttering at the speed of life" a book by dana k white!
