I wouldn’t say Ray sounded like Peter on this, he honored Peter’s version but really put his own stamp on it. Just a wonderful and passionate performance. Mad respect - hope to hear more classics in the future!
melbman43 yeah it’s a shame Mr Banks and Mr Rutherford didn’t seem to appreciate him. I thought the calling all stations album was good with Ray on Vocals
Hmm, I must admit, this version is great! Concerning The Lamb, I am usually on the side of those in awe of the studio performance. However, I think Wilson, here, does credit to what was originally intended.
Steve Hackett has chosen the vocalists for all these re-workings of classic Genesis extremely well - This guys voice is totally suited to this song. What an amazing song - an excellent rendition.
Sadly ..fans never took to him after Phil Collins departure ...I would loved to have see him develop with genesis. maybe they would never have went "pop" and still remained Classic prog Rock
The album was a No 2 in the UK and the European tour was very successful. It was the lack of interest in America that ended things. So I guess there were fans who were willing to give Ray a chance. In all fairness, Phil's solo albums weren't selling that well in the States so even if he did another album with Genesis, it would never have had the same impact. Changing times regarding music.
Saw Genesis play Carpet Crawlers twice, on the 6-7th March 1975, in "Pavilhão do Dramático", Cascais, Portugal (a couple of months before Gabriel left). It was M-A-G-I-C-A-L. I still think that of ALL Genesis songs this is the one where other interpreters seem to be left further away from the truly eerie, ghostly, magical, extraterrestrial feel that Gabriel used to give to it.
I'm glad that Steve Hackett got Ray Wilson to come on and sing with him. I think Steve knows what it's like to be a bit hard-done-by the Genesis Machine.
Well done to Steve for helping to Show Ray's capabilities. My impression is that, after the cancellation of the 1998 (?) USA tour, it was mainly Mike Rutherford's apparent concern for the image of Genesis to somehow be tarnished by them being seen as a less popular and thus somehow a falsely diminishing band. I recall that Ray Wilson commented later how Tony Banks came to visit to apologise for the way things turned out. I for one would have liked to have heard another album by the "new" trio after, in my opinion, the unfairly derided "Calling All Stations".
Ray Wilson est merveilleux. Mais on ne soulignera jamais assez l'immense beauté de la ligne mélodique de le guitare de Hackett toute de finesse, d'intelligence musicale et de sensibilité.
They are a smart breed of musicians who can play beautiful soft songs (Carpet Crawlers..), and hard songs with soft passages (The Knife, The Musical Box). Steve respects Genesis and vice versa. That is rare and so cool. Sad, I don't ever see Steve performing with Phil, Mike, Tony, Gabriel anymore, and that's cool; I still have all there recordings and memories.
I listen to these wonderful pieces of music and am instantly transported to early 1970`s to the time of my youth where at about 15 years old I first listened to Genesis, I have tears in my eyes with the recollections.
Maybe the most beautiful song ever, and Ray did a great job on this version. You just have to love the mystic feeling of this song, and the epic lyrics.
this was a genius move getting Ray on vocals for this. what an incredible singer he is. and this is one of Genesis best for sure. My man Lee on bass too. what a treat.
Simply beautiful. I forgot how much influence Steve's guitar playing had on some of these earlier Genesis songs, especially these ballads. You can certainly feel the passion of his playing throughout the song. Well done!
Steve Hackett, what an inspiration, like us, he still believes in the Quality of the songs , timeless, with Ray Wilson who is simply the best singer around at the moment! Keith Stent
This song is one of the best songs ever made. The keyboard, the electric guitar, the enigmatic lyric...one of my favorites. Play by Gabriel, Collins or these two marvelous singers is ethernal.
Peter be so proud....This is my fave song of all time...and you do this sweet justice And Mr Hackett...You make that guitar sing...Without the guitar in this song it is nothing...well done 10 outta 10!!!!! Toronto Canada loves you
My brother is six years older than me...he brought this album home from I.U. In '82. He had a Merantz and Bose...This was my first exposure to Genesis/Gabriel.. goose bumps.
One of the things not covered by other comments here: Because the song had always played by a 5-piece up to this point, there was never someone available to do the bass part properly, so it was always very basic bass pedal work by Mike. I find it very nice to finally hear the bass part from the record.
agree with you completely....the bass in this version of the song is just wonderful. Lee Pomeroy, incredible bass player and plays this song so very smoothly. Was so sad when he left this band, definitely not the same now
Watching Steve perform here really brings into perspective just how much he brought to the band. The Carpet Crawlers... An all time great Genesis track. Some say their very best. The music of which I belive written by the only 2 that never left, Banks and Rutherford. Yet it's Steve's genius guitar that makes the music what it is. Those long never ending notes.... It is fantastic to see Steve keeping Genesis alive and bringing in top talent to join him, including alum like Rey. Rey does great and deserves no hate for his roll in Genesis. They were in a weird place then and to bring it all full circle... The writers for the music of this all time great were not able to pull it off when putting together calling all stations. I I know this video is older but... Now here we are in 2021. If you compare what Hackett is doing live vs Tony Steve and Phil this year, 2021... Well, Steve is stealing the show!! That being said, I love them all and would love to see Steve and Peter work with the rest of them again at any level....
It really is not such a bad album, but Genesis without their star member in 1997 (a point at which Genesis could not have possibly been less fashionable), the album really never stood a chance.
I saw Genesis in 1997 with Ray Wilson and he did really well on the older Gabriel era material. He didn’t do too well with the newer material. His problem was that Banks and Rutherford were not really invested in the new band, especially Banks whose parts/playing were distinctly ….meh. Poor Ray didn’t stand a chance.
Poor Ray never got the credit he deserved when performing for Genesis, but strangely when he's doing his own/guest appearances people are ok with it. I honestly would want him back for some shows/songs. The Calling All Stations era is a very intriguing last chapter for them, and I'd like to see all past members do some sort of jam together.
His Calling All Stations with Stiltskin is one of my all time favourites. Definitely better than when he did it with Banks and Rutherford. ruclips.net/video/eUp2MAtxpfs/видео.html
Well by that point almost everyone on the planet equated Genesis with Phil Collins, I don't think a Phil-less Genesis in 1997 ever stood a chance at being successful. Not Ray's fault at all and I feel bad for him that the whole thing collapsed so fast, but I can also see why Tony and Mike would want to pull the plug and call it a day. If they would have called it something, anything, other than Genesis, it might have stood a better chance, but honestly the general public don't know who the hell Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford are.
Back in 97 I was really mad about the calling all stations album. I thought that it had destroyed a perfect tapestry. years later when I went back to it I realized the songs were much more in the vein of classic Genesis than anything really off we can't dance with the exception of 'fading lights'. The songs were much darker. I think the album could have used a little bit more on the existing songs. I never equated Genesis with Phil Collins. I was one of those guys who got angry when people said it's the same thing. I didn't really slag Ray Wilson but it was hard to accept a new guy after all that time. Now looking back, I really like that album and feel it is a much stronger Genesis album than we can't dance. In many ways it is more of a pure Genesis album.
I always liked Calling All Stations. Not only is it without Phil Collins, but it's also without Daryl Stuermer and Chester Thompson. I'd rather listen to this than to the godawful I Can't Dance or Jesus He Knows Me.
Finally, someone who actually appreciates Ray's talent
I wouldn’t say Ray sounded like Peter on this, he honored Peter’s version but really put his own stamp on it. Just a wonderful and passionate performance. Mad respect - hope to hear more classics in the future!
Yeah, Nad has the 1970s PG vocal style/tone going on- Ray really puts one in mind of the older PG tone.
Radiohead no surprise
What a combination, fantastic
let's agree that its closer to Peter than to Phil
More than 10 years later, it happened again.
Thanks Steve Hackett for keeping this alive for new comming generations.
hats off to Steve Hackett for finding singers that fit Peter Gabrial voice. fantastic

Ray and Steve really need to record an album together of new material and some classic Genesis songs.
Genesis Ray-visited
Yes please!!!
I’m crying.....
The best version of Carpet Crawlers in my opinion
Modern....direct....evergreen❤
This is still a damn good version nonetheless. The two vocalists harmonizing like in the original. And Steve's notes are on point throughout.

My favorite is the Seconds Out version.
Ray is killing it on this! Also the harmony with Nad Sylvan is excellent.

The vocal melody by Gabriel is really sublime. His greatest

Ray Wilson is amazing. Shipwreck is highly underrated
For me Carpet Crawlers and Hacketts guitar work has always been the epitome of prog Genesis

A nod to Nad Sylvan - always professional and honours the music without taking liberties...his suppers ready was great.
